Why in-form Wolves lost at home to Watford in Gameweek 9

It was as if somebody wound back time as Watford proved the Fantasy Premier League coupon busters on Saturday afternoon.

Not only were in vogue outfit Wolves surprisingly overturned on their patch, but the Hornets key Fantasy assets were all ones long-believed to have been dormant.

We’ve run the rule over Watford’s 2-0 win at Molineux to find out what went wrong for Nuno Espírito Santo’s side.

Wolves 0-2 Watford

Goals: Etienne Capoue (£5.0m), Roberto Pereyra (£6.2m)

Assists: Abdoulaye Doucouré x2 (£5.9m)

Watford manager Javi Gracia revealed that he targetted Wolves’ wing-back areas to bring them crashing back down to earth on Saturday.

The newly-promoted side had been the surprise package of 2018/19 thus far and had been offering incredible FPL defensive value too. Between Gameweek 1 and 8 they allowed just five big chances, level with Manchester City on 0.63 per game. Against Watford, they allowed two, nearly quadrupling their average for the season coming into the match.

Ironically, Wolves allowed marginally fewer shots inside the penalty area than usual. Between the season-opening draw against Everton and the Gameweek 8 win at Crystal Palace, they averaged 5.25 efforts in that area of the pitch compared to just five against Watford.

Passes in the final third in Wolves (left) vs Watford (right) | Completed passes are green

In a way, that shows that Gracia knew exactly what he was doing against Wolves, guiding Watford’s attacking play in specific areas to hurt their opponents, as can be seen from the heat map above.

“When you’re playing against Wolves you have to defend well against the wing-backs because many times they are very deep and you need to defend well in those situations. We know where we can find spaces to play and we felt comfortable in the first half. We created good lines for passes, we created the possibility to have good possession – not only keeping possession but creating chances to score and I think we did it better in the first half than the second.” – Javi Gracia

However, Gracia still admitted Wolves were hard to break down. Owners of their assets will have to hope that holds true in Gameweek 10.

“It’s not easy. They didn’t concede many chances, they’re always a compact team and are well-organised and today has been a very good game.” – Javi Gracia

The result for Watford was made all the more impressive by the fact that Gracia made four changes to the side thrashed at home by Bournemouth in Gameweek 8.

Three of them were enforced with Jose Holebas (£4.8m) and Christian Kabasele (£4.5m) suspended while Troy Deeney (£6.0m) missing out with a hamstring problem.

“He has a hamstring strain but I think he’ll be ready for the next game, I think so.” – Javi Gracia

Adam Masina (£4.3m), Adrian Mariappa (£4.2m) and Isaac Success (£4.5m) were brought into the side to replace those absentees while Andre Gray (£6.0m) dropped to the bench to allow FPL midfielder Gerard Deulofeu (£5.4m) to make his return in the unorthodox position of centre-forward. That was according to the team-sheet anyway, with Gracia referring to him as more of a number 10 after the match.

“Playing with one striker and Roberto (Pereyra), Gerard (Deulofeu) and Will (Hughes) behind him you can find another style of play that you can’t do when you play with two strikers. Today I know Gerard is not in the best condition yet but he’s helped the team to play well and get a good result as well.” – Javi Gracia

Wolves manager Nuno named an unchanged side for the ninth match in a row, a new Premier League record. However, the defeat on Saturday may cause him to make some changes for when they travel to Brighton in Gameweek 10.

“But it is a good point (that my players may be feeling their places are secure). We didn’t play good (against Watford), we didn’t play well, we didn’t perform, so when you don’t perform, you don’t get the result, and it was a disappointing day of course.” – Nuno

Given that he has not made a single alteration to his starting XI this season, it is difficult to predict where he might rotate next week. Going just on the substitutions made against Watford, Jonny (£4.5m) was hooked at half-time and replacement with Rúben Vinagre (£4.3m). In the second half, Ivan Cavaleiro (£5.3m) came on for Raúl Jiménez (£5.7m) and Adama Traoré (£5.5m) swapped in for Matt Doherty (£4.8m).

While it was a disappointing afternoon for Wolves, with discouraging statistics to back it up, their days as FPL options are not yet over. Chasing matches is not something they have been adept at since Nuno took over. Bearing in mind that they won the Championship at a canter, it should be no surprise that Wolves are much more comfortable when in control of matches.

Between Gameweek 1 and 8 they averaged 2.25 big chances per game, the sixth best in the league. Against Watford, they did not register a single one. Their 10 goal attempts and four shots in the box were also below their season averages of 13.75 and 7.63 per game respectively.

Wolves have conceded the first goal just 11 times under Nuno but they have come from behind to win just once. That was a dramatic 2-1 victory at Bristol City last December. As there was an element of fortune about Etienne Capoue‘s (£5.0m) opening strike from distance, with Rui Patrício (£4.6m) blindsided, it seems to fair to say that even in the Premier League they will not find themselves in similar situations too often. For that reason, it is worth retaining faith in Wolves assets for now. That is, of course, if they can stop more teams targetting the space behind their full-backs like Watford did.

Wolves XI (3-4-3): Patrício; Boly, Coady, Bennett; Jonny (Vinagre 45′), Moutinho, Neves, Doherty (Traoré 72′); Jota, Jiménez (Cavaleiro 60′), Costa.

Watford XI (4-4-2): Foster; Masina, Cathcart, Mariappa, Kiko Femenia; Pereyra, Capoue, Doucouré, Hughes; Success (Prödl 75 | Wilmot 88′), Deulofeu (Gray 69′).

Robbo or Maddison? Feel like this is going to be a big decision for the coming gameweeks. I'm already 0.1 short of doing Trippier + Richa > Robbo + Maddison and only have 1FT, so I have to make a decision. Maybe get Van Djik instead of Robbo and prioritize Maddison?

is there another hit you can take for Maddison and Robbo? if so, robbo this week, maddison + -4 next week. if not, VVD this week, maddison next week.

Are people happy with Agüero? He only play 60 minutes and get 6, 7 or 8 points. His price is 11.3. But who is a better forward?

      I have the same thoughts...

Few are better right now...Lacazette seems to be firing (bar last night) cheaper and that could get you a city midfielder that plays 90mins?!

    Choose 2 to play:

    Rich, Shaw, Doherty.

On Shaw and Doherty atm. Wasn't impressed with Rich last match. Mou can definitely pull a cleansheet on a good day. Good idea?

    Patrício

    Laporte | Alonso | Robertson | Doherty

    Hazard | Salah | Fraser

    Wilson | Agüero | Mitrovic

    Subs:
    Hennessey | Richarlison | Wan-Bissaka | Højbjerg

Got 2 FTs burning a hole in my pocket, want Mendy for Laporte for the excitement levels but he does just tick away nicely. Not sure if worth it. Fancy getting KDB in but for who? Ozil is on a bit of form and less then 4% owned.

Just city at home knowing our defence. It's worth having Fabs or a cheapie certainly but don't get upset when the late goals get conceded. Yarmolenko absence might actually make them a bit more defensive (injury).

    Bottomed.

Seems like many players will be WCing around he 15-16 (Same as me).
Started looking at potential WC team considering Arsenal, spurs, watford juicy fixtures and 2m short of this team (subject to injuries obviously):

    Patricio fabianski
    Holebas robbo trippier awb Jonny
    Hazard mane Pereira eriksen 4.4
    Aguero Arnie lacazette

Any ideas how get it better/cut 2.0?

      Pointless looking so far forward.

Plenty of those players could be out of form, dropped or injured.

And plenty more will be ‘must haves’.

Planning well is on thing but doing a WC team for 5-6GW’s time is a little OTT.

Having actually looked at your proposed team, I'd have a rethink. The ship has well and truly sailed on Holebas, Jonny was pulled at HT this week so raises question marks, Mane fallen out of form, no idea which Pereira that is and Eriksen hasn't been as good this season so far.

Much tinkering to be done, not even trying to be harsh.

Chilwell. Looked good last night and their fixtures are plum

      1. ShaymenTID

        5 years, 6 months ago

Yeah, leaning towards Chilwell. Got some doubts on both options though.

Leicester seem toothless going forward at the mo, I know that doesn't necessarily translate into an inability to keep clean sheets, but Puel's indecisiveness around whether he goes with Morgan or Evans in the middle with Slabhead concerns me.

Chelsea have kept CS's against Southampton, West Ham, Bournemouth and Hudds, they seem more assured of CS's with Palace, Burnley, Everton and Fulham in the next 5. But, they've allowed more big chances than any of the other top 6, and seemed to have lived a charmed life to this point, reckon that bubble could burst all too easily.

Rest of the backline is VVD, Laporte, Doherty, Bennett, AWB (benched for the foreseeable).
Midfield of Hazard, Salah, Richarlison, Maddison, Fraser.
And Aguero, Ings and King up top.

Got 1.6m itb, no desperate need to fight fire's elsewhere in the team, so it's that Def spot that needs attention.

As a TAA owner i did a bit of research on Klopp’s defence decisions last year. I looked at 3 situations similar to this year.3 games in one week.PL game- CL game- PL game. The rotation is clear and i think that if TAA starts tomorrow then Gomez is safe starter for Saturday.

Joe Gomez was sent off in the Champions League match against Sevilla on 13/9/17 for a second yellow card.
Might he then have been suspended for the next Champions League match on 26/9/17, so had to miss it anyway?

Lovren did not play against Huddersfield on 28/10/17, Klavan did.
Lovren had gone off injured after 31 minutes in the previous match, which was against Spurs on 22/10/17.

Apart from that, the details for TAA, Gomez and Lovren appear to be correct.

Liverpool struggled to create against Huddersfield and I think that Klopp might have been secretly relieved that sacrificing that extra bit of pace and creativity on the flank didn't backfire.

Cardiff can't hope for a win and will likely park the bus. As a TAA owner I'm hoping that he gets the nod to help unlock the Cardiff defence - it's not as if they should pose too much of a threat on the break.

Also, re the TAA dropping, the dataset is too small at the moment and a plausible explanation might just be that it's Gomez for away games and tough home games, and TAA for the rest. This weekend should tell though!

      Thanks for the analysis.

Not sure it holds weight this season though as VVD is in the mix, as mentioned above.

More importantly though, the right back spot is now being rotated between Gomez, TAA and Clyne. Gomez and TAA could easily both start too - with Gomez at centre back.

      • 10 Years

Seems like TAA is play or zero minutes, no cameo - which is bearable at his price. I think my policy will be to hold for the next 3 (two of which are mouthwatering and Arsenal game may be good for attack returns) then look at another option. I can live with Doherty or AWB filling in even if they don't have the best fixtures.

This is from early last season when Gomez and Trent rotated all the time. Now Gomez has taken a centre back role instead so I don't think the same logic applies.

Trent is first choice Right back and Gomez has been switched out there in the last 2 games so Liverpool can be more solid defensively. Against teams like Cardiff and Fulham I think Trent still gets the nod at right back with Gomez at centre back.

The situation is certainly one to monitor going forward and over Christmas I'd expect even more rotation from Klopp to be honest. However, despite your good research, I don't think its a simple rotation this season between Trent and Gomez therefore if one plays at right back in midweek thats not a guarantee they will not play at the weekend.

tl;dr: If Trent plays against Red Star this does NOT mean he is definitely dropped for the Cardiff game as he and Gomez are not competing for one spot in the team as they were last season.

If you own TAA just wait until 13.30ish on Saturday. No early kick-offs and Liverpool play at 15.00 so hopefully we get some sort of leak before the 14.00 deadline on who is playing.

Salah has to do a lot more than he has done so far to regain 'essential' status in my eyes.
