Mohamed Salah has become the Fantasy Premier League flavour of the month once again ahead of Liverpool’s Gameweek 10 meeting with Cardiff.

The Egyptian is currently the favourite for the latest captaincy debate and has a strong case for the armband.

With Manchester City tied up in an away trip to Spurs the most viable alternative this week looks like Eden Hazard, if he can shake off a back injury.

We’ve had a look at all the different angles to pick out the best candidate.

Captain Poll

Mohamed Salah (£12.8m) is the current leader of our captain poll by a considerable distance. The Egyptian is preparing to welcome Cardiff city to Anfield in Gameweek 10 on the back of a seeming return to form.

At the time of writing, just under 48% of our voters backed Salah and will have been pleased to see him scoring three goals in the space of a week as his strikes helped dispatch Huddersfield and Red Star Belgrade. The Liverpool man has also confirmed his position in the penalty pecking order too.

Despite issues with his back in the last few days, Eden Hazard (£11.4m) has a strong hold on second position in our poll. Chelsea are preparing to face a Burnley outfit that has given up more shots than any other Premier League side this season.

Hazard is still a long way off the leader though, his 18% backing under half of Salah’s.

For the first time since Manchester City’s Gameweek 8 trip to Anfield, Sergio Aguero (£11.3m) has not troubled the top of the pile. That may be to do with the fact that a trip to Spurs is considered a tricky fixture, at least on paper. In fact, as things stand, more of our voters are interested in Sadio Mané (£9.7m).

The Senegalese international, fresh from a starring performance against Belgrade, has 7% of the votes while Aguero has just a 3.5% share.

Interestingly, Andrew Robertson (£6.4m) could easily overtake the illustrious Man City forward before the Gameweek 10 deadline with his backing currently at 3.3%. The Scottish full-back looks likely to record a clean sheet at least against Cardiff and there will be the usual hope for attacking returns too.

The combination of a surprise Gameweek 9 benching and a theoretical tough fixture against Spurs has pushed Raheem Sterling (£11.2m) a considerable distance down the list this week, chosen by just 0.59% of voters. Thus far, 15 options have been considered superior captain picks including Bournemouth trio Callum Wilson (2%), Josh King (0.71%) and Ryan Fraser (0.77%) as well as Aleksandar Mitrovic (1.48%) and Raúl Jiménez (1.33%).

Arsenal’s goal-getters remain among the differential captaincy candidates as they travel to Crystal Palace. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£10.8m) has gone back above Alexandre Lacazette (£9.7m) after his Gameweek 9 brace. The two forwards currently have 2.03% and 1.79% backing respectively. Mesut Ozil (£8.4m) is another option considered more popular than Sterling this week with a 0.83% share.

Probably BSilva to Maddison and rolling 2FT. No one else I fancy around that price and BSilva is too much of a minutes risk as much I like him. Shaqiri is an option for anyone feeling particularly frisky but I doubt I'd do that.

Want to get in Arnie next week for the juicy Burnley game. I have king and mitro to spare. After doing my other transfers will be able to free up 0.2 maybe. Then that means you're hedging your bet on your defence. Defenders are scoring well for now so interesting to see how it plays out but come end of the season, unlikely to see any of them among the top scorers

I've been tinkering with a future WC and looked at the possibility of going Laporte & D Luiz instead of Alonso & Mendy.

Alonso has definately regressed - Rudiger has better attacking stats of late.

You'd save 2m there, but I agree both ways could work.

You'd be able to upgrade Lovren to Robertson, then upgrade one of your bench fodder in midfield.

  9. How important is attacking potential for defenders?
    Demel

    7 years, 9 months ago

Defenders - How important is attacking potential? On the previous page I had a discussion with Ibrox where we disagreed on the importance of attacking potential when selecting defenders. What do you think? (Our points are listed below)

Ibrox - This is flawed. Defenders should be chosen primarily for clean sheets, secondary for attacking potential. This doesn’t make Doherty outrageously better than Bennett

Demel - I don't agree. I want some other upside rather than clean sheets. AWB has bonus potential for example and for me is a better option than Bennett. It doesn't have to be an attacking upside. With defenders who attack you have 2 routes for points whereas with the likes of Bennett if he concedes then the best you can hope for is 2 points. An example is Alonso. If you held Luiz in GW 2&3 you would have scored 3 points. If you held Alonso you would have scored 24 points. The fact that Chelsea conceded didn't impact a good score. Now Doherty is no Alonso but he has 3 attacking scores already and that is a potential of 3 games that he could have delivered a good score where Bennett would have failed to deliver. It makes a big difference.

I prefer attacking potential rather than just CS but Its not that obvious as every player, team and situation are diferent. Laporte with City CS record is better than Pereira for example so hard to compare attacking def from weak team vs def from City for example.

CS can be scrapped any second. Attacking return may come any minute though.

pretty important generally, although a player like Lovren (bonus & CSs) is also pretty good as you say. I agree that AWB is better than Bennett generally, and Doherty/Jonny are better than players like Diop imo. Obviously fixtures do come into it though for CS potential.

    5. Jealous Viper
      • 8 Years

Good points made by you both. I think its somewhere in the middle. Personally my first basis for selecting a defender or gk is based on upcoming fixtures and I have to see enough good ones. Maybe 4 or 5 easy games out of 7 minimum. I believe fixtures bring form
That aside, my getting a more attacking defender then depends on combinations and budget. For instance if I Hypothetically have 11m to spend, my combo wont be Alonso and a 4.0 def, itll be trippier or mendy and them a Duffy or someone like that because I believe that combination will outscore the latter provided all have decent fixtures. I still primarily believe CS should be your main aim with defenders though we have some game changers this season in Mendy and Alonso has been pretty much the same the last couple of years.

      • 10 Years

Tough choice, but it really depends on their price. If you're going heavy on defence, there has to be attacking potentail.
So basically, below 6.0 its CS, above it is attacking returns

But when the difference is 0.4 between Bennett and Doherty, I say the little extra you pay for attacking potential is worth it

    7. Limited & Mediocre Mana…
      • 10 Years

Attacking potential is important insofar as the attacking potential is an obvious advantage over someone else. For example, there is no reason why you would pick VVD over Robbo, when their CS chances are the same. Similarly, it's completely reasonable to think that Doherty outscores Bennett by over 20% over the season which makes the price difference more than worth it. It's trickier when comparing across teams, but a defender only needs a few attacking returns over the course of a season to make a huge difference to their points total. A defender with no goal threat can never score a 15 pointer, for example, whereas Doherty has, the equivalent of 2.5 games with clean sheets.

I think best value defenders overall are cheapest nailed defenders in defensively strong teams. Attacking returns for defenders are a bit of a lottery (look at how many people had PVA at start of year) so just a bonus to be considered if you have a bit spare at the start of the year/on a WC/FH.

I dont understan the pva example one bit.... owned him from the start and recently got rid. He gave me 4.5pts pr game. Thats massive. Equates to 170ish PTS over a season.

A bit misquoted but fair. I agreed with you in a later reply that if you have two like for like assets then of course you would go for the more attacking player. BUT:

      * you said you would NEVER start Bennett, but are happy to play Doherty as a 3rd defender. If they are a 4th defender than obviously saving the 0.6 on Bennett is the logical decision.

      * wing backs will undoubtedly score the most points for defenders this season due to their attacking upside, however, those players will also come from teams with sound structure in defence and lots of clean sheets (City, Pool, Spurs, Chelsea etc.). The best form of defence is attack!

      1. Demel
        • 14 Years
        7 years, 9 months ago

I am glad you had chance to respond. I didn't intend a throwaway comment from yourself to become a hot topic - but I think the discussion is interesting regardless.

        - I personally wouldn't play Doherty as a 3rd defender. All season he has been my 4th defender but he has rotated with my 5th mid/ 3rd striker and started the majority of games. I picked him up at 4.4m so the difference was 0.4m. I believe that the amount of 0.4m is worth spending to ensure potential more attacking returns for a player starting every other game. As far as my 5th defender I want a starting 4m defender (AWB).

        - I think it depends on the player. Is PVA worth 1.5m more than AWB? I don't think so. Is Alonso worth 1.5m over Luiz - I do think so. I think the points difference will be enough to justify the additional outlay.

For me my next decision is to work out whether a AWB/Doherty & KDB combo is better than a Alonso & Fraser combo (I am still on the fence with this).

        1. WesMantooth
          • 15 Years

Pva doesnt needto be worth 1.5 over WAN. He simply needs to be worth 5.5 if you want him in your squad over a lenger stretch of time. He’s not competing with WAN, hes competing with similarly priced players.

    10. Vobinho

Such an argument always depends on the price. Premium defenders will definately need some attacking potential, but if you downgrade every premium attacking defender to their counterparts :

      Alonso - D Luiz - a saving of 1.5m
      Mendy - Laporte - saving of 0.5m
      Robertson - VVD - saving of 0.5m
      Trippier - Alderweld - saving of 0.4m

Now those defences will still get CS points, maybe not attacking points but attacking points should still be considered a rarity for defenders. I'd still expect 75% of defenders points to come from Clean sheets throughout the season.

The above gives a total saving of 2.4m - with that, you could upgrade Maddison to KDB/Mane with a slight downgrade elsewhere. That should maximise the output of the attack in the side, ensuring most attacking slots have a high ceiling for points and if the defensive assets in question regress attack wise you would be much better off by sticking to the cheaper defensive options.

Personally, I'll be ditching premium defenders on my WC as I see a big shift in focus soon as attacks become more prominent, meaning the Alonso's will need to stay back to concentrate on defensive duties even more, and if a cheaper defender blanks it doesn't hit you so hard as a cheaper option would.

I think this is correct. Have to consider how much you give up for "attacking potential"

I made an obvious mistake going Bennett over Doherty for 0.4m and it's cost me like 20+ points.
Alonso over Luiz on the other hand since GW 4 has not been worth his almost 1.5m in addtl. cost.

The point difference is about 66 pts with this example so far. And not even comparing Mendy who was out to Laporte. Quite well used rough 3 millions imo. Which player over which would have been money better used supposing we all can still afford Hazard and Kun etc?

Prem Defenders most def dont get 75% of points from cs. They are getting 60-76 points from appearancepoints alone.

KDB/mane over maddo AS a result of those 4 downgrades do not look sensible either. Marked me think mane and kev would need 7 or more points per game to compete.

First and foremost clean sheets, so the defender from a better defensive team (City) but with lower individual player attacking threat .... out trumps ... the attacking defender (Arsenal) with a lower clean sheet potential

I am with ibrox on this.

Cs is what i want from any defender. anything more than that I will consider it as bonus. And who says not so attacking defender can't give you attacking points ? They are the ones who are in the box during set pieces .

Also, less attacking defender means more defensive duties , which means more chance of getting bonus points.

Awb/Doherty is no Alonso. You won't start them if they play any of the big 6. But you will start Alonso irrespective of the opponent. This itself proves that clean sheet is the primary role of a defender UI

The order of priority for me is:

      CS potential
      Attacking potential
      Bonus potential

I would never pick a defender based on attacking potential alone. I go for the defender in a solid team over a marauding full back in a team that concedes 3 regularly. If CS potential is similar then I look at which is more attacking or has more bonus potential; however I usually go for the more attacking defender over the one with more bonus potential but not always.

You start Alonso against the big boys because Alonso can get attacking points against anybody. Not because he’s likely to keep a cleanie.

As long as they have some extra potentia above clean sheetsl, I'm happy. Take Jones last year; his regular 8/9 pointers made all the difference.

Mad bps stats weighs up for lack of attacking returns. If every clean is worth an extra 1-2 pts, it really adds up in the end.

Attacking/bonus potential is vital for those defenders we will play every week. For our bench options it’s not as important as it’s a lottery when attacking points will come in and when then bench will be used.

But for our staple defenders playing week in week out I wouldn’t even have one if they didn’t have attacking/bonus potential.

All a defender needs is an assist (3 points) and that’s nearly an extra clean sheet (4 points). Especially if it helps get at least one bonus point, then it’s already one extra clean sheet.

A defender who scores a goal and gets two bonus points from it, effectively gets an extra two clean sheets (8 points).

These circumstances can make huge differences, just like you prove with your point regarding Luiz and Alonso.

Also, we all know how exciting attacking defenders are too. They mean that even when a team has conceaded they can still come up with points.

If you’ve got a player with no attacking/bonus threat and they concede in the first 10 minutes then you have nothing to hope for all game.

Plus we all love attacking points from our defenders. They are always the sweetest 😉

Interesting topic. Ideally you want a defender who gets clean sheets and attacking points, and there are 3 who spring to mind - Alonso, Mendy and Robbo.

But after them, how to prioritise? Let me add into the pot that central defenders who don't add many attacking points can get lots of baps - over the season this can amount to more than a handful of assists and a goal. I'm thinking of the likes of VVD and Laporte, maybe Rudiger.

A further point is that these 'rocks' are subject to a lot less rotation than wingbacks like Trippier and TAA. I'm thinking primarily of Champ League sides - Europa sides and other clubs may be able to play their wingbacks more often.

The 5 I've assembled, hopefully as season-keepers barring injury are Robbo/Mendy, VVD/Laporte and Doherty. I feel I've got the balance right there as I predict City and Liverpool will bag over 50% clean sheets and other clubs will not get anywhere near that.

I always go for attacking potential, if a defender gets an assist its 3 points, a clean sheet is 4, they lose the clean sheet its dead, but you still have the attacking points if you have a gung ho defender. He can earn you points even if there defending them mates let them down

Everything that effects a defenders score is important. If your reproducing Irbox's statements fairly, he's in the wrong imo.

things to consider re defenders are:
      - probability of clean sheet
      - probability of attacking return (goals and assists)
      - probability of bonus (baseline bps)
      - probability of picking up cards
      - probability of getting negative points from goals conceded.
      - certainty of playing and minutes

      Lastly, price IS a consideration.

The only thing Bennet is better at then doherty is price and baseline bps. Meaning, its fair to assume that doherty is the best choice if the money isnt better spent elsewhere.

Defender should be chosen based on their expected points versus price, regardless of how they gain the points. You could have a very attacking defender on a terrible defensive team who scores the same points as a non attacking defender on a good defense. When you buy defenders in the 6+m range you're expecting high point returns in the range of 5 ppm and therefore need both clean sheets and attacking returns/bonus points, but for budget defenders it doesn't matter how the points are earned.
