Mohamed Salah has become the Fantasy Premier League flavour of the month once again ahead of Liverpool’s Gameweek 10 meeting with Cardiff.

The Egyptian is currently the favourite for the latest captaincy debate and has a strong case for the armband.

With Manchester City tied up in an away trip to Spurs the most viable alternative this week looks like Eden Hazard, if he can shake off a back injury.

We’ve had a look at all the different angles to pick out the best candidate.

Captain Poll

Mohamed Salah (£12.8m) is the current leader of our captain poll by a considerable distance. The Egyptian is preparing to welcome Cardiff city to Anfield in Gameweek 10 on the back of a seeming return to form.

At the time of writing, just under 48% of our voters backed Salah and will have been pleased to see him scoring three goals in the space of a week as his strikes helped dispatch Huddersfield and Red Star Belgrade. The Liverpool man has also confirmed his position in the penalty pecking order too.

Despite issues with his back in the last few days, Eden Hazard (£11.4m) has a strong hold on second position in our poll. Chelsea are preparing to face a Burnley outfit that has given up more shots than any other Premier League side this season.

Hazard is still a long way off the leader though, his 18% backing under half of Salah’s.

For the first time since Manchester City’s Gameweek 8 trip to Anfield, Sergio Aguero (£11.3m) has not troubled the top of the pile. That may be to do with the fact that a trip to Spurs is considered a tricky fixture, at least on paper. In fact, as things stand, more of our voters are interested in Sadio Mané (£9.7m).

The Senegalese international, fresh from a starring performance against Belgrade, has 7% of the votes while Aguero has just a 3.5% share.

Interestingly, Andrew Robertson (£6.4m) could easily overtake the illustrious Man City forward before the Gameweek 10 deadline with his backing currently at 3.3%. The Scottish full-back looks likely to record a clean sheet at least against Cardiff and there will be the usual hope for attacking returns too.

The combination of a surprise Gameweek 9 benching and a theoretical tough fixture against Spurs has pushed Raheem Sterling (£11.2m) a considerable distance down the list this week, chosen by just 0.59% of voters. Thus far, 15 options have been considered superior captain picks including Bournemouth trio Callum Wilson (2%), Josh King (0.71%) and Ryan Fraser (0.77%) as well as Aleksandar Mitrovic (1.48%) and Raúl Jiménez (1.33%).

Arsenal’s goal-getters remain among the differential captaincy candidates as they travel to Crystal Palace. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£10.8m) has gone back above Alexandre Lacazette (£9.7m) after his Gameweek 9 brace. The two forwards currently have 2.03% and 1.79% backing respectively. Mesut Ozil (£8.4m) is another option considered more popular than Sterling this week with a 0.83% share.

I dont like the one week punt on Laca/auba, but I am considering Arnie.

Thing is, Kane might aswell outscore Arnie this week. And I want the flexability to use the Kane cash with two transfs. Maybe even a mini WC next week (3 transfs)

We have exactly the same team but I have Luiz instead of TAA. I'm 0.2m short of Kane, Richarlison to Arnie, Salah for a -4, otherwise I would.

As it stands, I also want Arnie in but am tempted to hold the transfer this week and assess next week. Just worried about Salah going mad.

Is the Wolves double up defensively dead? I have doherty and bennett and considering bennett to diop on a free to get a good rotation

    1. Demel
      • 14 Years
      7 years, 5 months ago

Not necessarily but Bennett should never be a starter. He is fine as a 5th defender but no more. This has always been the case. Doherty is either a rotation 3rd/4th defender or a 4th defender who rotates with your cheap striker/midfielder and is a good 1st sub option.

      1. IRBOX âš½
        • 9 Years

This is flawed. Defenders should be chosen primarily for clean sheets, secondary for attacking potential. This doesn’t make Doherty outrageously better than Bennett

        1. Demel
          • 14 Years
          7 years, 5 months ago

I don't agree. I want some other upside rather than clean sheets. AWB has bonus potential for example and for me is a better option than Bennett. It doesn't have to be an attacking upside. With defenders who attack you have 2 routes for points whereas with the likes of Bennett if he concedes then the best you can hope for is 2 points. An example is Alonso. If you held Luiz in GW 2&3 you would have scored 3 points. If you held Alonso you would have scored 24 points. The fact that Chelsea conceded didn't impact a good score. Now Doherty is no Alonso but he has 3 attacking scores already and that is a potential of 3 games that he could have delivered a good score where Bennett would have failed to deliver. It makes a big difference.

Attacking potential is huge for a defender, look at the difference in the scores between robbo, Alonso, trippier, Mendy (considering he misses matches due to injury) Doherty compared to their teammates in defence. I expect the gap to widen as the season goes on

          2. IRBOX âš½
            • 9 Years
            7 years, 5 months ago

I agree in the upside of attacking potential absolutely, however, saying that you would NEVER start Bennett is wrong. If you don’t trust the wolves defence to start a defender even against weaker teams you shouldn’t own one of their assets irrespective of the attacking upside

I believe he'll play but nonetheless almost half of the managers have him, so I guess you can actually afford it :). It would be difficult to get him back later on, and you will want to get him back for sure.

    Fabianski
    Alonso, Robertson, Doherty
    Hazard, Salah(c), Schurrle, Kante
    Ageuro, Arni, Mirovic

    Ederson, Hojbjerg, WanB, Bennett

Want to do with this? I'm confident barring unlikely attacking return for Kante + Hazard potential injury + week bench.

    Any ideas?
Or leave this week to do some fixing with 2 free transfers next week?

In 12 months time spurs will have a brand spanking new stadium but no pocchetino, kane , eriksen, or Toby to manage and play in it. All will have gone to either madrid , barca or PSG.

That means nothing, neymar has a contact at psg and wont see that out...if 180m is offered kane is out of there and will double his money. That can never happen at spurs with their salary cap. I think real will hire and interim manager for rest of season then get pocchetino, who will demand that they bring kane. It's going to get ugly.

I'm not sure Kane is the type of player Madrid would really want, not many English players successfully move abroad. Real Madrid generally want players with a little more flair, and style than Kane offers.
Given the money it would take to sign him I'm not sure he fits the mould.
For all the negativity around Spurs right now, they're only 2 points behind City and Liverpool who everyone is purring over.

Thoughts on Zabaleta as a cheap defensive option with West Ham's upcoming fixtures?

    1. Jealous Viper

Go for diop or balbuena instead. Zabaleta could become a rotation risk long term

Anyone else think there is a good chance Salah is rested against Cardiff? Firming amd Mane had a rest last weekend so Salah is due

Plus this is what Klopp did last year, rest firming and Mane one game, and Salah in a different one..

    1. Jealous Viper
      • 7 Years
      7 years, 5 months ago

It is a possibility however slight but EPL is the major priority and after they struggled at HUD, think klopp will want to take no risks plus Salah came off around the hour mark to get his rest anyway
