Our latest Scout Notes piece looks at the final fixture of Gameweek 10.

The Monday evening match at Wembley was a curious affair, not least because of the visible after-effects of the NFL match staged there the previous day.

While not quite the snoozefest that Manchester City’s 0-0 draw with Liverpool was three weeks ago, the game won’t linger long in the memory and in truth it was a mismatched encounter between two Premier League sides playing at patently different levels: one good, the other great.

That being said, in spite of their almost total dominance, City still managed to present their hosts with a succession of excellent chances and their sixth successive Premier League clean sheet was only banked thanks to the wayward finishing of Erik Lamela.

Sergio Aguero and Harry Kane left their owners frustrated through either wasteful shooting or almost total non-involvement, but there was a deserved attacking return for perhaps the liveliest player on the pitch: the returning Raheem Sterling.

We’ve all the goals, assists, Fantasy talking points, manager quotes and fitness news from an eighth league win of the season for Pep Guardiola’s reigning champions.

Tottenham Hotspur 0-1 Manchester City

  • Goal: Riyad Mahrez (£8.6m)
  • Assist: Raheem Sterling (£11.1m)

With so many of the players around him having an off-day, Raheem Sterling (£11.1m) delivered a fine performance on his return to the Manchester City starting XI and left Wembley with an assist for his role in Riyad Mahrez’s (£8.6m) match-winner.

Sterling gave Kieran Trippier (£6.3m) a torrid evening on the left flank and it was the Spurs right-back’s inability to deal with a long punt from Ederson (£5.7m) that ultimately led to City’s goal; Sterling collecting the loose ball, drifting past his England team-mate and cutting the ball back for Mahrez to tap in.

Sterling then set up Sergio Aguero (£11.3m) to fire into the side netting and the City winger should have had a goal himself in the second half, being teed up by David Silva (£8.5m) and having his goalbound effort blocked by Trippier.

As he has done time and time again this season, Sterling bossed the penalty box touch count and the former Liverpool midfielder has touched the ball inside the opposition area on more occasions than any FPL forward in 2018/19 – including Aguero.

Sterling seems to be Guardiola’s man for the big occasions (he has started the away games at Arsenal, Wolves, Liverpool and Spurs this season, plus all of the matches against the “big six” he wasn’t injured/suspended for in 2017/18) and the concern from a Fantasy owner’s point of view is that it is in the games against the Premier League whipping boys (Huddersfield and Burnley, for instance) where Guardiola will choose to rotate/preserve him – exactly the type of fixtures you’d want your Fantasy asset to be taking part in.

Aguero was borderline anonymous until the hour mark when he suddenly sprang into life, the sight of a fourth official with a numbers’ board possibly triggering a Pavlovian response given that his withdrawal is usually imminent at that point.

Aguero wasted a glorious opportunity provided to him by David Silva (£8.5m) minutes before he stung the hands of Hugo Lloris (£5.4m), the Argentinean forward’s race eventually run after 70 minutes when he was replaced by Kevin De Bruyne (£9.8m).

Aguero has now blanked in four of City’s five away league fixtures this season (averaging just 2.6 FPL points on the road) and the 20-point haul against Huddersfield in Gameweek 2 remains his only double-digit return of 2018/19.

The City striker at least had more of a sight of goal than Harry Kane (£12.4m) whose fiercely hit effort from distance in the first half was the England striker’s only shot in 90 minutes.

Kane touched the ball just once in the City area all night, meanwhile, and in the past three Gameweeks (Kane has blanked in each of them) 17 FPL forwards have racked up more touches in the opposition area than the World Cup Golden Boot winner.

John Stones (£5.3m) discussed how the City backline nullified Kane on Monday night, highlighting the type of high press that has seen Kane pushed into deeper and deeper positions this season:

We know Harry [Kane]’s very clinical. We had to stop him as high up the pitch as we could. He made a lot of great runs behind and it’s never easy to give a striker a yard to get a shot off. It happened in the first half with the shot over the bar.

Great strikers do that but tonight, how we defended, we kept him to minimal chances and regained the ball off him, setting the boys off on counter-attacks. That’s something we’d worked on in training and we executed it well tonight.

While the premium forwards flattered to deceive in attack, two of the more widely owned defenders in FPL this season were having a night to forget at full-back.

Trippier’s struggles we have already touched upon but Benjamin Mendy (£6.3m) was equally suspect for City, allowing plenty of space behind him for Spurs to exploit and being lucky not to make contact with Erik Lamela (£6.3m) after a petulant swing out at the Argentinean midfielder.

While Mendy and Trippier’s attacking instincts make them appealing to us Fantasy bosses, their defensive vulnerabilities can’t have gone unnoticed by their respective club managers and there are ready-made alternatives in Serge Aurier (£5.8m) and Fabian Delph (£5.3m) available to either coach should they desire it.

Mendy was the weak link in an otherwise solid back four, with Trippier and Moussa Sissoko (£4.9m) wasting excellent positions when exploiting the space in behind the City left-back and unable to pick out a Spurs shirt.

The dependable Aymeric Laporte (£5.8m) and Ederson recorded their seventh clean sheets of the season in this victory, with the Brazilian goalkeeper out quick to tackle Kane in the first half but otherwise untroubled except for a Toby Alderweireld (£5.9m) header.

Mahrez was culpable for Spurs’ only “big chance” of the match – blazed over by Lamela late on – when caught in possession but the Algerian winger was a menace in attack, crashing a shot off the upright via Lloris’s glove on 28 minutes and in confident mood as he glided around the pitch on his third straight league start.

The former Leicester City winger is owned by fewer FPL managers than six other City midfielders but is the only member of Guardiola’s squad to have featured in all of their competitive fixtures this season.

The City head coach is clearly a fan of his summer signing. Speaking at full-time, Guardiola said:

Riyad was good. He was focused and he did a great job.

He has played the last three, four, five games at a high level, scoring goals and making a lot of assists.

Against Shakhtar Donetsk, he would have scored three goals if not for the goalkeeper.

While Lucas Moura (£7.2m) – no shots, key passes or penalty box touches for the Brazilian midfielder on Monday evening – gradually fades from our thoughts as a Fantasy asset, three giants of FPL continued their rehabilitation from injury with cameo appearances at Wembley: a rusty-looking De Bruyne for City and Dele Alli (£8.9m) and Christian Eriksen (£9.2m) for Spurs.

We are likely some weeks away from considering any of them as viable premium midfield picks, but with each player now available for significantly less than their starting price, we’ll be closely monitoring their return to fitness over the next few matches.

Certainly given the superb performances of David Silva and Bernardo Silva (£7.6m) in central midfield on Monday evening, we might be waiting a little while on De Bruyne’s regular involvement in a Premier League starting XI.

Tottenham Hotspur XI (4-3-2-1): Lloris; Trippier, Alderweireld, Sanchez, Davies; Sissoko, Dier (Winks 67′), Dembele (Alli 75′); Moura (Eriksen 82′), Lamela; Kane.

Manchester City XI (4-3-3) Ederson; Walker, Stones, Laporte, Mendy; Fernandinho, Bernardo, David Silva (Kompany 88′) Sterling, Aguero (De Bruyne 71′), Mahrez.

Im happy with my team right now but have no Salah. Am I going to need to get him in?

I wouldn't worry about him unless he starts to show signs of seriously pulling away from Mane. Depending on how much you have in the bank it could mean a downgrade elsewhere

Vardy didn't start last game, possible tiff with Puel? Also with the awful accident involving owner, tough times for Leicester. Suggest Murray who is cheaper and Brighton have great fixtures

What to do with this lot? 0.3m ITB and 2 Free transfers?

    Patricio

    Robertson - Mendy - Alonso

    Hazard - Salah - Fraser - Maddison

    Jiminez - Aguero (c) - Mitrovic

Was thinking Mitro > Arnie, any other suggestions?

It's the trade off between 6 points a game from Laporte, or 12 points every other game from Mendy, with some inevitable benchings

Some of the 12 pointers for Mendy will still be 6 pointers though - won't get attacking returns every game. Add to that the inevitable benchings and I'd sway slightly towards Laporte especially if he can nick a goal or two from set pieces.

Murray unsustainable. Wouldn’t buy LEI assets atm.

Double palace defence not great. Midfield very weak.

Tomkins and Carney need to go for me.

Tomkins to city def, or pat to ederson are solid if unspectacular upgrades

Firmino to aguero is a punt given minutes kun is getting.

      Carney to Barkley another punt.

I wouldn't rush into wc. Fixtures swing again in 5 weeks. Rich Kenedy mitro Arnie all have good fixtures this week.

I reckon Tomkins out this week and mitro out the next to improve squad for the long run.

Kun in the highest potential though perhaps if you want immediate impact.

Not often I find myself in this position but genuinely not sure how to use a transfer. Have 2FT's so need to use one this week:

    Ryan / Button

    Mendy / Alonso / TAA / AWB / Bennett

    Haz / Salah / Maddison / Rich / Fraser

    Kun / Mitro / Wilson

ANy ideas would be great, thanks

Nothing obvious there -given you can’t afford Mitro -> Arnie, perhaps one of:

      Ryan -> Fabs
      TAA -> Chilwell/Digne
      Fraser -> Barkley
      Haz -> Sterling

I’m puzzled why everyone seems to be overlooking John Stones?
He’s £5.3m, so cheapest City defender, seems to get baps whenever City get a clean sheet, appears to be 1st choice with Laporte and Pep loves him. I brought him in 2 GW’s ago and no regrets(so far).

Pep plays with one lynchpin and rotates around him typically. Last season that was Otamendi, this season it's Laporte

I think Pep/City see Stones and Laporte as long term partners and whilst all city players will suffer from some rotation, I don’t see Stones being rotated too much going forward.

To be fair he appears to be safest after laporte, he started both against Pool and Spurs and he played RB in two games covering for Walker.

Is J.Murphy worth the extra 0.3 over Camarasa?

One of him, Kenedy or AWB will probably start most weeks

    Patricio / 4.0

    Mendy / Robbo / Alonso / Doherty / AWB

    Salah / Hazard / Rich / Kennedy / xxxxx

    Aguero / Arnie / Mitro

After a very decent GW, I don't want to lose ground. Extremely keen to get Mendy in, especially for SOU (H) but it would mean taking a -4 hit so the alternative is to just save FT and have 2 next week.
    What do you think?

    1FT £0itb
    Fab
    Alonso, Robbo, Duffy
    Salah, Hazard, Maddison, Fraser
    Aguero (C), Wilson, Mitro

    (Foster) (Capoue, Doherty, AWB)

    A) Save FT
    B) Doherty, Maddison > Mendy, Ndidi / Kayal (-4)
    C) Doherty, Wilson > Mendy, Success (-4)
    D) Something else?

    Cheers!

Its as tight as anything around top 10k OR. 6k here and a small green with 75 this GW. Says one thing to me... No hit... as a -8 as lovely as it feels at the time, justified by being "long term", would be a rank killer. Thats honestly the one thing Ive finally just realised in 8 FPL seasons.

Smooth - Hazard (c) didn't play, which meant Mane (vc) got the double points; Held onto Fraser and Wilson on my WC; Alonso and Mendy provided; Maddison and Richarlison on the bench covered Hazard and Robbo nicely.

      Oh boy, here goes:

      Alisson 2
      TAA 2
      Bennett 2

A Liverpool clean sheet was more likely than an anytime Salah goal in the bookies' odds 🙂

      Doherty 2
      De Bruyne 1
      Maddison 2

      Lacazette (c) 4
      Ings 2
      Jimenez 2

I got very fortunate last night to see Sterling and Mendy top up my score by 12pts but my overall score was 31.

Astonishingly, whilst 31 wasn't tragically awful, it says so much about ownership of certain players in the top 100k that this score made me drop *110k* places from 23k to 133k. That's pretty astonishing at this stage of the season. I have never seen such a massive drop!

Onwards and upwards as they say.

I should add that one of those was clearly an auto sub (Hazard). He was also my captain. It's the second week in a row that my captain has auto-switched to Lacazette, and when did he stop recording attacking returns? Two weeks ago! It's a cruel game sometimes (but who doesn't love a moan 🙂 )

Disaster mate. To think I kept faith in Salah for so long when he wasn't doing much.

My problem is I think I'm too clever for this game. I thought there were good reasons for not getting Aguero, and good reasons for leaving Salah and Aguero out on my WC. Theoretically there are, but I just need to remember that I just need to beat other players, not some mythical, hypothetical 'perfect' score. If you don't have the template players and they score well you are totally screwed :). I didn't need KdB this early - that was arrogance. Deep down I knew Mané would have blown him out of the water short term, and he did.

It goes against my own advice because I always say ignore differentials and leverage the template in small doses.

Will you be getting Salah back? I'm being stubborn now and convincing myself the Mané will cover him.

It's a difficult situation and I agree that we are liable to overthink things at times. I've been beating myself up over the Fraser VC thing since the deadline closed as I could have scraped a passable score that week with it.

I've had Aguero since the start and Hazard since GW5, so I've not not missed the Salah points and was going along quite nicely. I was all set for the Lacazette -> Kane -> Salah hokey cokey from GW8. But the failure of Kane made me second guess myself on following through with the Salah move. I knew I wanted KDB back in but also knew it would be 1-2 weeks too early. I could have brought Sterling in but then I couldn't upgrade Holebas to Mendy. I've done that transfer this morning so my teams looks good for this week.

The elephant in the room is now GW12. The standout captain choice is Salah, I could move to Mane but it always feels like more of a gamble. Either way I will need to lose one of Hazard, Aguero or KDB to make it happen and it's not something I want to do. I think I will just chalk this week up to unfortunate circumstances, there are still 28 more game weeks to go and plenty of opportunities to catch up.

I think/hope you'll be OK with Mané. In terms of scores, it still doesn't look as if Salah is worth so much more than him. The smart move might be to double up but I would still favour a 2x Liverpool defence, notwithstanding the crushing disappointment of the GW just gone!

      No smooth this week.

9 players, Arnie, Holebas, Hazard, Robertson & Højbjerg no shows.
Spent all week weighing up bringing Salah in and tearing my side to bits. Waited until Saturday morning and priced myself out of the move by 0.1 due to Kane dropping and Salah rising.
Had no Salah so resorted to Hazard (C), saw the Liverpool teamsheet and moved the (vc) from Robertson to Fraser, panicked and changed it again to Mitrovic just before the deadline.
Ryan again delivering was the only positive of the week. 42 points and down 96k places to 138k. Sh!tshow of a week, looking forward to putting it behind me and refocusing on the next GW.

      Rough:
Held TAA but lost the CS that Robertson owners would have missed.
Traded Zaha for Arnie, when I should have fixed Peltier instead.
Held Salah to be captain this week and ended up being matched by Mane anyway.
Billing and Wan Bissaka coming off the bench with 1pt each.
Schurrle Mitro double up very underwhelming.
63 points and drop from 5k to 10k

      Smooth:
      Alonso, Fraser & Salah (c)
Still have WC to fix things next week

After a very rough 26 points last week, taking me from 8k to 25k, the same team apart from Henn>Fab got me 94 points this week, taking me up to 6k.

Mane (c), Alonso, Fraser, Wilson, Sterling and Success coming off the bench for Haz getting me back on track.

Ha yup, am definitely learning patience this season and seems to be paying off. Was so tempted to take a -4 or -8 after last week.
          GW8 team got 85 points, 31k to 8k.
GW9 only transfer Shaw > TAA, got 26 points dropping to 25k
          GW10 Henn>Fab 94, 25k to 6k.

Not panicking and playing more long term is helping....trying to keep usual knee-jerk moves to a minimum

I've been following a few of the Top 10 HOF managers - James Egersdorff and Richard Clarke. Look at the contrast in fortunes.

James (No.1 HOF) - GW8 - 645k OR. GW9 he scores 51pts (above Top 10k average) and GW10 he scores 82pts (with the assistance of Mane(c)) and is now ranked 295k OR.

Richard (No.6 HOF) - GW8 - 75k OR. GW9 WC he scored 41pts (lower than Top 10k average) and GW10 he scores 54pts (lower than Top 10k average with no Mane or Salah) and is now ranked 145k OR.

Will James' run continue and will Richard be able to turn it around?

      Rough -

      - no Bournemouth coverage
      - no shows from Hazard, Robertson, Arnie, and Hojberg (1st bench) resulted in 10 men.

      Smooth -

      - Matt Ryan (superstar!)
      - Captain Salah
      - scraped 66 points (51 from Salah, Ryan and Alonso!)

Small OR drop to 47k. First red arrow since GW4.

Neither rough nor smooth for me, more probably "smough". 78 points but up from 90k to 60k. Salah (c) but no shows from Robbo and hazard. Richarlison and Jimenez off bench.
Pleased with OR for this time of the season, I'm usually sat around 2m rank at this time. Hope to beat my best finish of 2k.

      Smooth:
Followed up 66 last week with 105 this week. Went from OR 186K to just outside top 10K in 2 weeks.

Another pen save from Pickford, Mane, Salah, Alonso, Wilson, Pereyra (drafted in for Walcott) and Mendy.

      Rough:
A few big misses from D Silva, Aguero, Doherty - but I really can't complain!

Now top of all my mini leagues 🙂

Rough; selling Mane GW9 for KdB early bit me. Haz, Robertson no shows, six 2 pointers.

Smooth; Salah(c), Ryan, bringing Laporte in for PvA worked out fine which was why I had to do Mane>KdB to release the 0.1 I needed so got some points back there. Richarlison assist all out on 65 with 5 off the bench.

      Dipped 5k to 248k.

Rough - Robertson missing out on Cardiff / Van Aanholt coming off the bench.

      Smooth 80 points, no hits.
Transfers - rolling a free transfer and keeping the faith with Salah (c) and Fraser who were on the verge of being transferred out.
Defence - Alonso, Duffy and Foster contributing.
Bench - although they didn't give many points, Bennett, Wan-Bissaka and Richarlison were a full-playing bench to give 10 points when Robertson, Hazard and King didn't play.

Capped Salah - 2 office rivals ahead in ML didn't own, which earned a wee smile [ok, a big smug cheeser].
11 pointers from Fraser and Alonso were nice crack paperers.

      Rough:
Switched Foster > Patricio on Friday night - the pain of GK rotation..
      Hazard, Robertson and Pereira no-show's.

Smooth - Salah captain saved me from an historically bad gameweek.

Rough - Had two free transfers. Option one = Balbeuna for Rico. Option two = Rudiger and Arnie for Alonso and Jiminez. Went with option two. Not too fussed about Alonso's extra points over Rudiger as is to be expected now and again. But couldn't have predicted Arnie missing out altogether. With Robbo and Hazard also missing out I would have had Balbeuna's points off the bench if I'd have taken the first option.

Rough; just me tried to be clever last week and now just reverted my own stupidity (which was an attempt at doing something different). Van Dijk loosing cs, header in the post, Duffy header in the post, Maddison somehow did not get points, and Luiz was the one who passed or took the shot that alonso so luckily got the assist from.

My most (perhaps only) successful WC ever this week. Changed almost entire team keeping only Fabianski, old team:

Ederson, Fabianski, Alonso, Robertson, Doherty, Daniels, Wan Bissaka, Walcott, Richarlison, B. Silva, Fraser, Neves, Lacazette, Aguero, Kane

      New Team:
Kepa, Fabianski (sub), Mendy, Rudiger, Lovren, Pereira, Diop (sub), De Bruyne, Maddison, Pereyra, Salah (c), Martial, Wilson, Firmino, Reid (sub)

88 points overall, most notable smooths, had Hazard (c), Vardy & Arnautovic in until late in the week before swapping for Salah (c), Firmino & Wilson. Also dropped Kane, Aguero & Lacazette who all blanked.

      Rough:

      - Had Arnautovic, Robertson, Hazard and Obiang so copped a zero despite WCing two weeks ago.
      - Traded Alonso and Mane on my WC two weeks ago.

      Smooth:
      - Balbeuna with an expected goal

My team was a mix of rough and smooth. I'll take the 69 points, but it didn't feel nice:
      Captain Salah - 15x2
      Alonso and Fraser got 11
      Foster got me 9
3 players with 2 points (TAA, Doherty, Aguero)
2 players with 1 point (Cairney & Vardy)
1 player with 0 points (Bamba)
4 no-shows (Hazard, Robertson, Hojbjerg, and Joselu).

Plenty of rough and smooth this week, but all in all ended with 84 and a green arrow to kick me back into the top 50K for the first time this far into the season.

Rough: lots of starters failed to even make it on the pitch. Transferred TAA to Robertson for a -4 after TAA's benching last week . Hazard didn't play, Holebas missed out on a clean sheet and probably more. Bench also failed to do much (AWB, Doherty, Hojbjerg not playing). Mitrovic and Aguero - meh.

Smooth: got in Salah and captained him; Bournmouth still firing (Wilson and Fraser); Ederson and Alonso justifying their price; Richarlison sneaky assist.
