Our latest Scout Notes piece looks at the final fixture of Gameweek 10.

The Monday evening match at Wembley was a curious affair, not least because of the visible after-effects of the NFL match staged there the previous day.

While not quite the snoozefest that Manchester City’s 0-0 draw with Liverpool was three weeks ago, the game won’t linger long in the memory and in truth it was a mismatched encounter between two Premier League sides playing at patently different levels: one good, the other great.

That being said, in spite of their almost total dominance, City still managed to present their hosts with a succession of excellent chances and their sixth successive Premier League clean sheet was only banked thanks to the wayward finishing of Erik Lamela.

Sergio Aguero and Harry Kane left their owners frustrated through either wasteful shooting or almost total non-involvement, but there was a deserved attacking return for perhaps the liveliest player on the pitch: the returning Raheem Sterling.

We’ve all the goals, assists, Fantasy talking points, manager quotes and fitness news from an eighth league win of the season for Pep Guardiola’s reigning champions.

Tottenham Hotspur 0-1 Manchester City

  • Goal: Riyad Mahrez (£8.6m)
  • Assist: Raheem Sterling (£11.1m)

With so many of the players around him having an off-day, Raheem Sterling (£11.1m) delivered a fine performance on his return to the Manchester City starting XI and left Wembley with an assist for his role in Riyad Mahrez’s (£8.6m) match-winner.

Sterling gave Kieran Trippier (£6.3m) a torrid evening on the left flank and it was the Spurs right-back’s inability to deal with a long punt from Ederson (£5.7m) that ultimately led to City’s goal; Sterling collecting the loose ball, drifting past his England team-mate and cutting the ball back for Mahrez to tap in.

Sterling then set up Sergio Aguero (£11.3m) to fire into the side netting and the City winger should have had a goal himself in the second half, being teed up by David Silva (£8.5m) and having his goalbound effort blocked by Trippier.

As he has done time and time again this season, Sterling bossed the penalty box touch count and the former Liverpool midfielder has touched the ball inside the opposition area on more occasions than any FPL forward in 2018/19 – including Aguero.

Sterling seems to be Guardiola’s man for the big occasions (he has started the away games at Arsenal, Wolves, Liverpool and Spurs this season, plus all of the matches against the “big six” he wasn’t injured/suspended for in 2017/18) and the concern from a Fantasy owner’s point of view is that it is in the games against the Premier League whipping boys (Huddersfield and Burnley, for instance) where Guardiola will choose to rotate/preserve him – exactly the type of fixtures you’d want your Fantasy asset to be taking part in.

Aguero was borderline anonymous until the hour mark when he suddenly sprang into life, the sight of a fourth official with a numbers’ board possibly triggering a Pavlovian response given that his withdrawal is usually imminent at that point.

Aguero wasted a glorious opportunity provided to him by David Silva (£8.5m) minutes before he stung the hands of Hugo Lloris (£5.4m), the Argentinean forward’s race eventually run after 70 minutes when he was replaced by Kevin De Bruyne (£9.8m).

Aguero has now blanked in four of City’s five away league fixtures this season (averaging just 2.6 FPL points on the road) and the 20-point haul against Huddersfield in Gameweek 2 remains his only double-digit return of 2018/19.

The City striker at least had more of a sight of goal than Harry Kane (£12.4m) whose fiercely hit effort from distance in the first half was the England striker’s only shot in 90 minutes.

Kane touched the ball just once in the City area all night, meanwhile, and in the past three Gameweeks (Kane has blanked in each of them) 17 FPL forwards have racked up more touches in the opposition area than the World Cup Golden Boot winner.

John Stones (£5.3m) discussed how the City backline nullified Kane on Monday night, highlighting the type of high press that has seen Kane pushed into deeper and deeper positions this season:

We know Harry [Kane]’s very clinical. We had to stop him as high up the pitch as we could. He made a lot of great runs behind and it’s never easy to give a striker a yard to get a shot off. It happened in the first half with the shot over the bar.

Great strikers do that but tonight, how we defended, we kept him to minimal chances and regained the ball off him, setting the boys off on counter-attacks. That’s something we’d worked on in training and we executed it well tonight.

While the premium forwards flattered to deceive in attack, two of the more widely owned defenders in FPL this season were having a night to forget at full-back.

Trippier’s struggles we have already touched upon but Benjamin Mendy (£6.3m) was equally suspect for City, allowing plenty of space behind him for Spurs to exploit and being lucky not to make contact with Erik Lamela (£6.3m) after a petulant swing out at the Argentinean midfielder.

While Mendy and Trippier’s attacking instincts make them appealing to us Fantasy bosses, their defensive vulnerabilities can’t have gone unnoticed by their respective club managers and there are ready-made alternatives in Serge Aurier (£5.8m) and Fabian Delph (£5.3m) available to either coach should they desire it.

Mendy was the weak link in an otherwise solid back four, with Trippier and Moussa Sissoko (£4.9m) wasting excellent positions when exploiting the space in behind the City left-back and unable to pick out a Spurs shirt.

The dependable Aymeric Laporte (£5.8m) and Ederson recorded their seventh clean sheets of the season in this victory, with the Brazilian goalkeeper out quick to tackle Kane in the first half but otherwise untroubled except for a Toby Alderweireld (£5.9m) header.

Mahrez was culpable for Spurs’ only “big chance” of the match – blazed over by Lamela late on – when caught in possession but the Algerian winger was a menace in attack, crashing a shot off the upright via Lloris’s glove on 28 minutes and in confident mood as he glided around the pitch on his third straight league start.

The former Leicester City winger is owned by fewer FPL managers than six other City midfielders but is the only member of Guardiola’s squad to have featured in all of their competitive fixtures this season.

The City head coach is clearly a fan of his summer signing. Speaking at full-time, Guardiola said:

Riyad was good. He was focused and he did a great job.

He has played the last three, four, five games at a high level, scoring goals and making a lot of assists.

Against Shakhtar Donetsk, he would have scored three goals if not for the goalkeeper.

While Lucas Moura (£7.2m) – no shots, key passes or penalty box touches for the Brazilian midfielder on Monday evening – gradually fades from our thoughts as a Fantasy asset, three giants of FPL continued their rehabilitation from injury with cameo appearances at Wembley: a rusty-looking De Bruyne for City and Dele Alli (£8.9m) and Christian Eriksen (£9.2m) for Spurs.

We are likely some weeks away from considering any of them as viable premium midfield picks, but with each player now available for significantly less than their starting price, we’ll be closely monitoring their return to fitness over the next few matches.

Certainly given the superb performances of David Silva and Bernardo Silva (£7.6m) in central midfield on Monday evening, we might be waiting a little while on De Bruyne’s regular involvement in a Premier League starting XI.

Tottenham Hotspur XI (4-3-2-1): Lloris; Trippier, Alderweireld, Sanchez, Davies; Sissoko, Dier (Winks 67′), Dembele (Alli 75′); Moura (Eriksen 82′), Lamela; Kane.

Manchester City XI (4-3-3) Ederson; Walker, Stones, Laporte, Mendy; Fernandinho, Bernardo, David Silva (Kompany 88′) Sterling, Aguero (De Bruyne 71′), Mahrez.

Don't see why you need to make that defensive transfer, your defense looks ace for the next 5 gameweeks at least. I would rather get rid of Mitro or Maddison, though with their fixtures next gw I would just downgrade Ings to Success and save the other.

When are players yet to wildcard planning on doing so? At 30k now and feel I lost about 40 points from not wildcarding between GW’s 3-6 but now team is too good to wildcard.

Agree on not wildcarding. I was around 50k when used WC before GW9. Had a good team but wanted to push to higher ranks. It backfired I losed points and now sitting around 110k with no Pool players.

  7. City defensive options
    IRBOX ⚽

With 6 consecutive clean sheets and 7/10 in the league this season I think it is pertinent to look at City's seemingly impenetrable defensive fortitude. Keeping a clean sheet away to Spurs has got me extremely interested in doubling on their defensive assets; namely Mendy and Laporte. Granted Ederson is a solid pick also, however, I think the likes of Ryan/Fab offer better value for money, more save points and better chance of bonus. City are on track to keep 26 clean sheets this season, far superior to their 18 last season and 12 from the 16/17 campaign. I won't post too many stats below but here is the general message..

Laporte is the only member of the defensive line excluding the keeper who has played every minute of the league season to date. He has more completed passes and more total touches than any other player (apart from Jorginho). We have also seen his goal threat from set pieces come to fruition in the champions league.

City rank lowest (or best) for total shots conceded, shots on target and big chances conceded. Mendy is undoubtedly the king of the City defence due to the attacking upside and he currently offers 7.6 points per match. Laporte is posting 5.4 points per match, a figure which I feel will be unrivalled from all other FPL assets in his price bracket. At the current rate Laporte would exceed 200 FPL points for the season!

Perhaps those looking to offload the likes of Ryan Fraser or Richarlison, perhaps a formation change and doubling on the City backline would be a much safer option than punting on unproven players such as Barkley or Martial?

      I think it's a fair point.

I don't like defensive doubles as a rule, but my best ever season last year was built on early DDG jones double up so it can work.

How many of robbo alonso Mendy laporte do you go for? All of them?

      1. IRBOX ⚽

I have the big 3 (RAM) currently and looking at Laporte as a fourth

          I don't have Alonso.

With haz salah aguero I struggle for cash to get him yet alone laporte too.

I always tend to go 3-4-3 but big budget forwards aren't cutting it at the minute really.

          It is something to ponder.

Ederson & Mendy is an extremely good use of 11.5m

Big hitting back 5 totally viable this year with those 2, Robbo, Alonso + either VVD/Trippier

I still think Barkley & Doherty would score more than Laporte & Murphy for instance.

A comparison of 5.8 mids against defenders would come out relatively equal, but the big difference is 4.8 defenders are worth much more than 4.8 midfielders.

Regarding formation change, I'd still rather have Doherty over Laporte in that formation as it only takes one goal to scupper a clean sheet and Doherty offers trumendous attacking value, then Barkley would offer much greater depth to your bench than Murphy etc would.

      1. WesMantooth
        • 15 Years

But why does it have to be laporte+Murphy v Barkley+Doherty? Makes it sound like the discussion is limtited to whether you think a combo of 6ish mid and 4.5ish def is better than the combination of 6ish def and 4.5ish mid. Its definately more complex.

Problem with this is that when City put 6 past a team, you will be annoyed you have double defense and not double attack.
I think one city defender is sufficient (Mendy or Ederson) - especially considering the wealth of options in defense in the premium bracket this year

If City put 6 past a team, you’ll still not get more than 2 or 3 goal involvements. And one of them may we’ll be Mendy anyway. It’s a lottery as to which attackers a) start, and b) are involved if they do.

Its more annoying to invest in assets you wont be able to trust. The city attack is a lottery both with starts and returns. The defence assets are more reliable in both aspects.

I decided that the only way to get Salah in was to lose Aguero, who's not proving prolific at the moment. That freed up a City spot which enabled me to triple at he back - Ederson, Mendy and Laporte. Given the massive rotation in midfield including me getting burned by captaining Sterling who didn't play 2 weeks ago, I feel I've made a good call here.

I guess that is always a possibility, but Pep rates him I think. He did have a bad game, but Spurs are a good team and he is still City's player with the most assists (5)...and he missed 3 games. Even if he gets the odd benching, he should still be City's highest scoring defender at the end of the season.

Just tuesday but really need your advice, sitting around 1 k in OR and trying to stay there. Got 2 FT and 0.5 itb, I would like to get Mendy and Arnautovic in to my squad. Which of the alternatives would you consider after the games midweek?! Current squad:
    Patricio - Foster
    WB - Doherty - TAA - Robertson - Alonso
    Salah - Hazard - Ricardilson - Fraser - Kenedy
    Aguero - Wilson - Mitrovic

A Mitrovic --> Arnautovic, and save one FT
B TAA and Fraser --> Mendy and max 4.9 midfielder
C TAA, Fraser, Mitrovic --> Mendy, Arnautovic and max 4.9 midfielder (-4 points)

I prefer that, but I'd also be wanting Mendy. I heard that Leicester will be making a decision today about the weekend, because then the transfer may be worth it if they don't have a fixture (albeit still quite shortsighted).

I got Maddison in recently based on fixtures but was not impressed at all by him v West Ham. Just didn't look dangerous. I'm actually hoping Leicester game postponed to give me more reason to ship him.

With West Ham looking more solid at the back, and those fixtures, I'm thinking a couple WH needed.

Arnie the obvious pick (for Gray) but just short of cash, so:

    a) Fraser > Diagana (cheap, attacking and will get games due to injury/suspention, plus Frasers fixtures turn now)

    b) Mendy > Balbuena (Mendy's horror show last night a factor, plus have Robertson & Alonso so already a little over-invested in defence)

    Thoughts?

If you consider Mendy to Balbuena an upgrade, I think it's time for a walk and to consider whether that in fact makes sense. Balbuena is allright by all means but he is no Mendy.

I think keeping hold of Fraser is a good shout at the moment - I would back Bournemouth to score against United and Arsenal at home & he could be involved - then bench for (mci) before HUD.

There must be another defender you could switch to Balbuena? Don't get rid of Mendy.

And - who's your GK? Fabianski could be good right now.

        Whole defence/team

        Fab (4m)

        Robbo Alonso Mendy AWB Bennet

        Haz Salah Mane Fraser Schurle

        Gray Vardy Kamara

Guess Schurle or Vardy other options to go but bot have decent fixtures

The Mendy sacrifice would also allow enough money to do either Schurle to Richa or Vardy to Laca over the next week or two....

It's too big of a sacrifice - City are so good at the back, and he bombs forward so much.

I would get rid of Schurrle. I know he's playing Huddersfield, but Arnautovic is as well next week - and you can jump on him early vs BUR as well. Fulham's defence is hampering their entire side right now as they're so low on confidence.

Why are people buying Wilson and Fraser? I mean dont they look in the big picture of following fixtures?
If they are brave - fair enough...though I just feels they are impulsive and buy because of last GW.
For an example Arnie Haz and Robbo are the players for next GWs for me, yet they are sold 😀

Wilson and Fraser have been excellent value.

Some people believe in form over fixtures. Some don't.

Personally I wouldn't be buying now, but as a Fraser owner i don't see why they couldn't do well v Utd.

          Still form over fixtures debate.

Plus some people just knee jerk after a win or chase transfer value.

It's also the alternatives at that price point. For instance if you have had enough of mitro and have no cash in bank it's murray or Wilson really.

Murray for fixtures for sure, but Bournemouth scoring many more goals.

It will be interesting to see.

Ha. So Robbo missesone game and you sell. If this is not impulsive. There will always be rotations - Hell Salah Mane or Haz can also be rotated - selling?
There is a lot of luck in this game ... but having a stable team and good subs aint so hard to understand. All the best to the ones buying Wilson Fraser or Barkley now. Somehow I feel Arnie and Maddy will punch them in the face very soon 🙂 Its just the game #unwritten rules

Do not compare buying Fraser/Wilson with buying Barkley. Former are longterm buys, do not relate with fixtures, but with minilueague opps or expectations.
Barkley and Martial buys are short term punts.

I think Wilson will still be good value next few gws. Not so much Fraser i fear. I'm considering bringing Wilson in as part of going 3 up top but downgrading Fraser to fund Arnie. Wilson being on pens helps and Bournmouth are one of those teams that can get attacking returns in any game.

Thoughts on this potential top-heavy WC team?

          Ryan
          Alonso - Laporte - Diop
          Salah - KDB - Barkley - Kenedy
          Aguero - Aubameyang - Arnautovic

          Button - Yedlin - Wan-Bissaka - Romeu

I like this team, will have a three-way rotation going on with Diop, AWB and Yedlin. My only concern is the third and fourth mids where I'm not too sure about Barkley as a long-term option. Any ideas on how you'd sort it?

I play 433 with RAM and Doherty but has not work well for 2 gw. Is he really good?

Doh had 5 GA's vs Bri.

Top of the overall Def list iro Pen touches, GA's and SiB.

Was ultimately frustrating as he didn't bag, but as an owner watching that game was v exciting.

He's constantly in the box / final third.

yeah, I benched him(got subbed in) and I was very nervous when I watched bits of the game.

Then will keep Doherty as have some value tied on him.

Likely to drop one of Maddison/Richarlison to switch to 4-3-3 with an extra City defender.

Do it now with Southampton at Home next or next week?

              Play
              a) Duffy vs Everton (a)
              b) Billing vs Fulham (H)

Footballfix says B, but gut says A. What do you think?
