Comeback specialists Man United beat in-form Bournemouth

The start of Bournemouth’s tough run of fixtures ended in defeat as Manchester United came from behind on Saturday lunch-time.

However, there was much to be positive about for those Fantasy managers keeping faith in Cherries assets.

We’ve got all the talking points from that match in this latest Scout Notes article…

Bournemouth 1-2 Manchester United

Goals: Callum Wilson (£6.6m) | Anthony Martial (£7.4m), Marcus Rashford (£6.7m)

Assists: Junior Stanislas (£6.0m) | Alexis Sánchez (£10.0m)

Bournemouth’s attacking players sent a message to Fantasy managers considering selling them with their performances against Manchester United. Despite losing the game in stoppage time, Callum Wilson (£6.6m), Ryan Fraser (£6.1m) and David Brooks (£5.1m) all starred in a first-half where the Cherries could have scored four or five times.

Wilson swept Bournemouth into a 1-0 lead in the 11th minute when he latched on the end of Junior Stanislas‘ (£6.0m) cross. That was his seventh goal involvement in five matches although it was only his second goal of the season at the Vitality Stadium. Curiously, prior to Saturday’s opener, he had not found the net there since the Gameweek 1 win over Cardiff.

The fact that Stanislas started the game was down to the absence of the injured Joshua King (£6.4m) for the second week in a row. Eddie Howe used a 3-4-3 formation in the 3-0 win at Fulham last time out but opted for a 4-4-2 against the Red Devils. He pushed midfielder Brooks further up the pitch to play centre-forward alongside Wilson, allowing Stanislas to take his place on the right flank.

Brooks can consider himself very unlucky not to have come away with attacking returns as he took to the striker’s role with aplomb. No player had more than his five shots on goal in the match.

“Today was a different role for Brooks and he did very well again, and was behind a lot of our creative football. It is a very demanding league physically and questions are to be asked defensively but he has done that very quickly.” – Eddie Howe

Ryan Fraser (£6.1m) also looked lively, with the Scottish winger enjoying the first chance of the afternoon. A Chris Smalling (£5.8m) error allowed Fraser to go clear through on goal, but he took too many touches in the penalty area and ran too far wide to trouble David de Gea (£5.8m) with his finish.

With a trip to Newcastle up next for Bournemouth, Wilson, Fraser and Brooks will have all earned at least one more week in Fantasy squads, maybe more.

For most of the first half, Manchester United were just as flat as Bournemouth were brilliant. In conceding the opening goal, Manchester United still have just one clean sheet this season. Only Fulham have fewer than that so far.

Romelu Lukaku (£10.8m) missed out on the starting XI for the second time in a row but on this occasion did not even make the bench. Mourinho revealed in the build-up to the game that the Belgian forward had picked up an injury after Friday’s press conference.

“In training yesterday, after the press conference, he felt something that needs to be studied in the next couple of days. So Lukaku has not come and we decided to start with Alexis.” – Jose Mourinho

Going forward they offered little and it really needed a moment of leadership to kick them into motion. They got it after 30 minutes when Paul Pogba (£8.0m) sprinted back nearly 50 yards to make an important tackle on Fraser. That must have given his team-mates the lift they needed as they ended up equalising with their first clear-cut chance.

Ashley Young (£5.7m) and Alexis Sánchez (£10.0m) combined well on the overlap down the right flank, and the Chiléan’s cross into the penalty area was fired home by Anthony Martial (£7.4m). That represented a fourth straight league match in which the Frenchman has scored. There were also encouraging signs for those interested the underlying statistics. In the three matches prior to Gameweek 11, Martial had scored four goals from just six shots. That was an average of just two per match, but at Bournemouth Martial registered four attempts on goal. If he can sustain that level of attacking intent, his Fantasy appeal will only increase. It will be intriguing to see if his popularity will continue to rise with a trip to Manchester City up next.

It was another match in which Manchester United were significantly better in the second half compared to the first. Jose Mourinho admitted he was surprised to see yet another poor showing in the opening 45 minutes.

“I can’t understand. My assistants were saying to me before the game that we had the best warm-up of the season. We were very focussed and had great intensity. The week was a very good week of work so I can’t believe how poorly we started. At half time, I thought I was the luckiest manager in the Premier League. Because to be 1-1 in a half when it should have been like 5-2 or 6-2. We were really lucky because we were really poor. Defensively awful. Absolutely awful. And I look at the whole of my team when I say that, not just my defenders.” – Jose Mourinho

In the second 45 minutes, United were the much better side, especially after Mourinho made a double substitution in the 56th minute. Marcus Rashford (£6.7m) and Ander Herrera (£5.0m) were introduced for Juan Mata (£6.2m) and Fred (£5.6m), in a move that Mourinho was particularly proud of come the full-time whistle.

“I think I was happy in bringing Ander to the game because normally the intention, when you are looking for a result, is to bring on attacking players or in theory to make attacking changes. I felt that the team needed a player like Ander to give us balance in that position, to give us more pressure, to recover the ball faster and to protect better.” – Jose Mourinho

After half-time inspiration and second-half chances, United had several chances to take the lead. The closest they came was when a Young free-kick hit the bar and rebounded to substitute Rashford. His shot was blocked by Nathan Aké (£5.0m) before Pogba’s effort was cleared off the line by Brooks.

United’s winning goal was another earned through the stoppage-time efforts of Pogba. His cross into the box reached Rashford before Adam Smith‘s (£4.5m) attempted clearance took it out of his control. The ball was still loose enough for the United striker to lash home.

Fantasy managers may want to see more improvement in first halves before considering signing their attacking players en masse, especially with Man City up next.

“I think they [Bournemouth] were much better in the first half and we were much better in the second. I think we cannot give the first 20, 25 minutes away because that makes our games more difficult. I think the attitude in the second half and the last ten minutes of the first half was fantastic but I want us to be a whole-game team. Against Everton we were good. We want to be a team that plays that well in a whole game.” – Ander Herrera

“Strong but calm (words were said at half-time) and I start by being possible. I said it is impossible to play worse than we did so the second half will be better for sure.” – Jose Mourinho

Bournemouth XI (4-4-2): Begovic; A Smith, Aké, S Cook, Francis; Fraser (Ibe 74′), Lerma, L Cook (Gosling 68′), Stanislas (Surman 91′); Brooks, Wilson.

Manchester United XI (4-3-3): De Gea, Young, Lindelof, Smalling, Shaw, Fred (Herrera 56′), Matic, Pogba, Mata (Rashford 56′), Martial, Sanchez (Lingard 78′).

Chelsea and Liverpool both recently put 3 past them even though they scored 9 in total against Southampton last season (2.25 per game on average).

City played Southampton in GW 38 last season, winming 1-0, after they had well and truly wrapped up their season, while Southampton were on a high after just beating relegation and not losing any of their previous 4 games. Their earlier encounter (2-1 to City) took place during City's "lull" when they had only won 4 games in a row by 1 goal (a few of those winnera scored in the last minutes of the games) and didn't score more than 2 goals in a game for 5 games in a row.

If this sort of information actually helps predict scores then I'd say that City - the form team - could annihilate Southampton - the out of form team. They're probably more worried about the champions league fixture mid week but I'm sure they'd prefer to wrap this game up early with a bundle of goals. Let's see how it goes!

The ICT Index is a football statistical index developed specifically to assess a player as an FPL asset. It uses match event data to generate a single score for three key areas – Influence, Creativity and Threat. These figures then combine to create an individual’s ICT Index score. It condenses more than 40 match event statistics into four distinct scores. These offer a view on player performance for factors that are known to produce FPL points.

      1. Influence

This evaluates the degree to which that player has made an impact on a match, or matches over the season. It takes into account events and actions that could directly or indirectly effect the match outcome. At the very top level these are decisive actions like goals and assists. However, the Influence score also processes significant defensive actions to analyse the effectiveness of defenders and goalkeepers.

      2. Creativity

Creativity assesses player performance in terms of producing goal scoring opportunities for others. It can be used as a guide to identify the players most likely to supply assists. While this analyses frequency of passing and crossing, it also considers pitch location and the incisiveness of the final ball.

      3. Threat

Threat is the third measure, producing a value that examines a player’s threat on goal; it therefore gauges those individuals most likely to score goals. While attempts are the key action, the Index looks at pitch location, giving greater weight to actions that are regarded as the best openings to register a goal. All three of these scores are then combined to create an overall ICT Index score. That then offers a single figure that presents a view on that player as an FPL asset.

Mane definitely better points for value so far. Also the extra cash is handy to spend elsewhere.
Wouldn't bet against Salah either though, and has the potential to be more 'explosive.'

Go with you gut, but you definitely need one or the other.

I've considered getting rid of Trippy but I'm going to keep because I want him back in week 15. Got Laporte instead of Mendy to cover City defence, so kept 4 premium defenders.

            2FT and .2 ITB

Thinking of moving Lascelles to Balbuena and play two or Balbuena/Doherty/Pereira every week, rotation looks quite good fixture wise but not sure on WHM defence.

This is just a rant I am still annoyed with myself.
I did Duffy in Pereira out early transfer in the week
Then as a late 50/50 call did Wilson out Vardy in for a -4

It was a classic case of thinking too far ahead too early.
            It cost me 13 points.
Ok Vardy had a couple of chances and could have scored, but as a percentage call it was not the right one,

To make it worse I considered F. Anderson/Martial for the -4 but discounted it as too much west ham and man united fixtures mixed,

If it’s any consolation, I screwed up last week. I changed my captain from Hazard to Salah. But because I did it on my IPad I forgot to press the submit button (if I do changes to my lineup on my phone it saves it automatically).

Had a busy Saturday, so settled down in the afternoon to see my Salah captain points, so imagine my horror when I saw the armband was still on Haz.

I did not confirm my captains properly.

Morning.....what is the view on purchasing Wilson now his fixtures stiffen?

Likely to want to remove mitro this week and already got Arnie.

Am I too late to the Wilson party??

            Alternatives seem to be Murray.

Don't way to downgrade to success as already got deulofeu

I did Mitro to Wilson yesterday for these reasons. 1. He's in everyones ML team and has been killing me. 2. He keeps deliverin.

Other forwards are Arnie and Kun.

I'd only consider for the next 2 fixtures if you have spare transfers. I took Ryan Fraser out for gw11 because i can't see him sustaining his output over the next 8 fixtures. He could do well in the next 2 though. If I'd had Wilson, I would have kept him for the United, Newcastle and arsenal games, since his goal involvement is likely to be much higher and takes some pens. I'd bench him for the toughest fixtures. I got Arnie in for gw11 because he's got much better fixtures and he can score again at anyone, even when West ham are put of form. He's a better bet for the next 8 imo and probably a season keeper.

There's a risk Bournemouth and Wilson lose form after a a run of tough fixtures. Combine that with the fact they shouldn't score as many against big 6....not the best timing.

Likewise. Lots of midfielders to choose from but few cheap forwards all of a sudden, if you need them. Maybe Wilson is your beat option, alternatively some hokey cokey with Wilson and Murray...

To be fair the risk with Wilson's fixtures is limited as long as you don't hold loads of other players with terrible fixtures. I got rid of Fraser because i wanted to reduce exposure to big 6 opponents and Bournemouth have the worst fixtures of them all. I had about 6 players at Bournemouth, wolves, Everton and palace who all have horrendous fixtures. Like I said before I'd feel more comfortable with Wilson than Fraser, who also has better replacements.

            Perception v Reality.

            What we hope will happen:
Kun scores five v Southampton. Mendy gets CS and attacking points. Sterling starts.

            What probably will happen:
City win 2-1 with a Saints OG, Fernandinho gets the other, Mendy gets booked. Sterling 1 pt cameo at the end.
            ————————————————————————————————
            What we hope will happen:
Rampant Chelsea put Palace to the sword at the Bridge. Hauls galore for Alonso and Hazard.

            What probably will happen:
Chelsea win 2-0 with goals from Jorginho (pen whilst Haz is still on the bench) and Morata. Alonso no assists.
            —————————————————————————————————
            What we hope will happen:
Mitrovic haul as Fulham and Huddersfield share seven goal thriller.

            What probably will happen:
            0-0 draw.

That Fulham defence is a shambles, they won't keep any clean sheets playing the way they have been. Hudss have been close to goals in last few, been a bit unlucky. Will be a 1 - 1 imo

They are genuinely the worst defence I’ve seen in the Premier League era. And as a QPR fan that’s genuinely saying something!

But even they will keep at least one CS at some point this season (law of averages etc).

This could potentially be that game. Hudds would have to have a lot of bad luck (shots off post and crossbar, onside goals disallowed like yesterday) and woeful finishing (a few missed open goals).

I’d say they’d have to have a few shots cleared off the line too, but Fulham defenders don’t usually track back that far, so that ain’t gonna happen.

Chelsea prediction is reasonable, but to say City's "probable" goalscorers are Fernandinho and an OG is laughable.

Similarly a bore draw is not the "probable" outcome on Monday night.

You know "probably" means most likely?

Guess it will be difficult to get a better OR this week, as most have this players (except from Mitro)?

A lot also have Mitro. You will finish with a better OR as you own all of them including a captain.

It's my first time inside the top 10k so I am looking for a bit of advice.

When you reach the top 10k is it conventional wisdom to be more conservative with your transfers (i.e. less maverick and fewer hits)? And does your rank tend to change by fewer places each week compared to when you are lower down the rankings, assuming you are not too far from the average each week?

I read somewhere that once you're in the top 10k the best strategy is to play it fairly conservatively until the latter part of the season, then use double gameweeks, wildcards and chips to make your move towards the top spot. This would suit me as I have historically always performed better at the end of the season than the beginning.

If you're in the Top 10k just keep doing what you're doing. Simple as.

It depends. 80% of the top 10k have the same players. It is the ones that you own outside the template which make the difference. I don't own Wilson, Richarlson and Mitrovic. A good week for them kills my rank. If they have a bad week and my players do well I rise in rank. Ultimately there is no one tactic and if the template fails you can also fall away quickly.

I got into the top 10k for the first time a few weeks ago and took a -8 this week to freshen my team up. Just do what you usually do there's no set of rules to do better once you reach the top 10k. If maverick moves are your thing don't give then up!

Maverick is not my style except at the end of the season when I like to gamble on players in the relegation battle. How's your -8 working out so far?

Nothing should change in theory. Your decisions should always come from sound reasoning, and that's what will push your ranking up, especially while others insist on making mistakes around you. Focus on answering the question of WHY your decisions have worked thus far, so you can continue to make good decisions in the future.

Just keep doing what you’ve been doing so far, as it’s gotten you this far already.

Thanks for all the answers. Keep doing what you're doing is a common theme, which makes sense. But I am conscious that I have been unusually lucky this season because since my GW4 WC I have only used 4 free transfers out of a possible 7 and one of those was a luxury one week GK punt on Begovic (9 pointer!) because I had 2 FT and nothing else to do.

This week I am planning to downgrade one of my 4.5m rotating keepers to a 4.0m and upgrade Mitrovic to Arnie, unless the former hauls tomorrow.

Have a bad feeling Aguero will be my first captaincy blank of the season. Rival doesn’t even own him so could be a huge swing if he hauls

There will be someone somewhere with Richarlison vice captain and Jimenez first bench praying for an Aguero rest.
