FPL Question Time – Selling Salah and considering Martial

The future of Mohamed Salah in Fantasy Premier League teams has been seriously called into question despite another eight-point haul in Gameweek 12.

We’ve put that question to our latest panel for FPL Question Time as well as some other key issues.

That includes whether it’s time to sign Manchester United’s in-form Anthony Martial and what value there is at Newcastle currently.

Who’s on the panel this week?

Ben McNair – An expert in FPL metrics. Has four top 5,000 finishes to his name in his time as a Fantasy manager.

Paul Gee – Finished second in the world in 2017/18 and is ranked seventh in our Career Hall of Fame.

Josh Landon and Brandon Kelley – New York-based co-hosts of the excellent Always Cheating podcast.

Question 1 – Ben

Alex C: Are any players from Newcastle worth considering after the international break, taking into account their run of fixtures and low ownership?

“Dubravka, Kenedy and Rondon are worth considering, but I won’t be rushing to bring any of them in. Kenedy as a fifth midfielder looks the most viable route for my own team.

“Dubravka is a good keeper, but faces stiff competition from cheaper alternatives like Patricio and Fabianski. I like to own keepers from teams with a low ratio of shots conceded inside the box to shots conceded outside the box. That ratio is around 2:1 for Newcastle over the season to date, which is a bit surprising given their reputation as a defensive team. Only Cardiff, Southampton and Huddersfield have a worse ratio.

“Kenedy is cheap enough to be a fifth midfielder and has taken an encouraging 21 shots over the past six gameweeks, though only five were on target. It’s been Callum Paterson with the most impressive numbers at that price point, but Kenedy has more talent and I think he’ll be involved if Newcastle can maintain some form. A gamble, but you get what you pay for.

“Rondon impressed at the weekend, but I’d wait for more evidence. Raul Jimenez looks a safer pick at the moment and there are great options like Arnautovic and Callum Wilson that don’t cost a lot more.”

Question 2 – Paul

FPLGEEZER: After the international break and the coming fixture turn, is is time to break up the template and consider going without Salah and Mane with the increasing number of mid-price options in midfield? Richarlison, Felipe Anderson and Martial all look good.

“I am using Salah as a template example because I actually don’t believe Mane is a typical template player. It is definitely time to consider whether Salah is still worth the downgrade.

“The only player that I would consider is Sterling. The reason for this is he is still a key captain choice.

“Within my team template I always have three of these, my current options being Salah, Aguero and Hazard.

“There will be a number of things I will be considering before making this move.

“Salah’s fixtures are really not that bad. Some people are talking as though Watford (away), Everton (home), Burnley (away) and Bournemouth (away) are the equivalent of Man City, Barcelona, Real Madrid and PSG. Clearly his schedule still holds great appeal.

“Of course, we have to think about Salah’s price too. He is a very expensive asset and a big chunk of the budget goes on him. The key question is: What will you with the extra money?

“You could potentially upgrade a fourth Defender to a premium one sucas, Robertson, Alonso and Mendy. Or you could upgrade a mid-priced fourth into a premium or your third striker into a mid-priced forward. Even going to Sterling, who I think is the best Salah replacement, frees up around £2m that could be well-spent.

“We have to consider Salah’s form too, which seems to be more explosive at home, like other key captain choices. We must remember that in his next four gameweeks he is at home only once.

“At Anfield, Jurgen Klopp has started to play the 4-2-3-1 system which really seems to benefit Salah, as he takes up a more advanced role. This was the case against Southampton, Cardiff and Fulham at home, which yielded eight, 15 and eight points respectively.

“Where Klopp feels he will need extra support in midfield he prefers 4-3-3. This normally is away from home and in my opinion explains the drop in output from Salah.

“In conclusion, it really is a difficult choice whether to drop Salah or not as his fixtures aren’t too bad. It is perhaps his price that is the deal-breaker for me. It is simply too much for someone whose form tends to drop off away from home. So I would say it is worth the downgrade in order to upgrade one or two players.”

Question 3 – Josh

James Wood: Jamie Vardy (-2.14) and James Maddison (-1.37) have the worst xGI delta for strikers and midfielders respectively in the past four Gameweeks. Despite having four favourable fixtures in the next five, do the panel think it’s time to look elsewhere?

“I think we can officially give Maddison this year’s Dusan Tadic Award for the player most likely to create great chances that don’t actually lead to goals.

“His FPL value is more as playmaker – sort of a poor man’s KdB or Eriksen – but I’m not sure there’s anyone outside Vardy and Maguire who’s actually capable of scoring goals with the chances he creates.

“He can often be found playing fairly deep so I don’t think you can expert more than a handful of goals from him this season.

“As for Vardy, he’s now gone five weeks without an attacking return and he wasn’t exactly facing difficult opponents.

“He’ll be 32 in January and you do wonder if he’s losing some of the pace that once allowed him to catch teams on the break a few times each year (obviously, losing his link-up partner in Mahrez hurts here, too).

“It will be interesting to see what happens if (when?) Puel is fired and whether a new manager is better able to take advantage of this team’s strengths. Iheanacho in particular seems like a player in need of a fresh start.

“For the time being, I’m staying away from the Leicester attack despite their fixtures.”

Question 4 – Brandon

David Hunter: With Man Utd’s upcoming fixtures and his form, is Martial the differential that we’ve been looking for?

“The simple answer is: Yes, Martial is indeed the differential you’ve been looking for. But, like with most key differential players, Martial is poised to quickly move into the realm of template.

“Going into Gameweek 9, the French winger was owned by just 37,606 managers. But, as he has continued to rack up consistent minutes and attacking points, his ownership sits at 608,827—that’s 12% of managers.

“This international break is crucial for manager’s trying to deciding if and when to take the plunge with Martial for no other reason than his price and ownership continuing to rise.

“We can’t ignore a player who’s scored in six goals, with one assist, in his last five games, regardless of the team. And Manchester United are about to embark on a terrific run of fixtures all the way through the festive period.

“Hosting Arsenal in Gameweek 15 will hardly give managers cold feet, thus away at Anfield in Gameweek 17 is the only fixture left in this calendar year where there would be significant doubts with United ability to score.

“Martial seems to have finally won the trust of Mourinho, and with Lukaku struggling, he looks to be United main route to goal. (Throw in the fact that Martial has won penalty duty when Pogba is not on the pitch!)

“Despite a classic mysterious ‘injury’ for the international break that managers will have to monitor, it appears to be all up side with Martial going forward.”

Want to try something a bit different so want this by GW16. Just 1 hit will get me there, but will this be close to template by then and is the bench too expensive or good for the busy festive period. Moves come with there own risk of backfire, but like I said the season is kinda passing me by so gotta try something

    Chilwell Salah Mane and Wilson
    to
    Trippier Sterling Martial and Laca

But would be nice to have some more captain options in there so will definitely consider - think Sterling is the sacrifice in that case. I don't mind putting the C on Sterling but I know he won't always start. Kane is nailed. Thanks

Looks good in theory. I take it you’re fine with Salah and want to spread the money around? A lot of teams have both Salah and Aguero so a bit risky.

Yeah done with Salah. Think he is just too expensive for what he is delivering. Even the little things like no bonus is getting really old.
I really like this team but the standout isssue is lack of obvious C options.
That's where your point of no Salah or Kun is very relavent. Will think on. Thanks for the reply.

      Lloris instead of Ederson

AWB/Balb instead of Trippier and upgrade someone

      Play Fraser

Thanks. Fraser would be ahead of Jimenez depending on fixture.

That could work it's just one more hit for the Ederson Lloris move is the possible problem.

I would not take many hits and just plan it over a few gameweeks

Trippier is injured so he needs to be changed and it’s a good chance to get a defence Spurs keeper, Liverpool, City & Chelsea defence - rather than a City double up.

I would also try to keep some money itb to bring in Kun/Kane for Laca, Salah for Sterling etc in a single transfer ... basically to be able to swap over a few key premium assets as the fixtures dictate

          Good luck 🙂

Cheers. Thanks for all the replies.
Lloris for Ederson and leaving Chilwell leaves about 1.6 ITB which would be nice. I liked the Chilwell move as he got some horrible fixtures about the time Trippier has good ones from 16.
All these moves are slowly slowly. Maybe 1 hit in the next 4 weeks. With lots of time to assess injuries and form.

Looking at it in isolation I say Sterling probably better value over the season. Call it cover or say I want an attacker from City and pool or I prefer a double up on City attack.

Martial starting 6 game weeks ago coincided with Lingard & Sanchez injuries etc.

With every Utd mid and forward likely to be fit after the IB, will we see rotation and Matial losing minutes compared to his recent run of starts ?

If we haven’t owned him yet, have we now missed the boat ?

Interesting observation. He's the in form attacker for man utd now, surely he starts. Whether or not he lasts the games will have to depend on his consistency

Normally I like a player, that if he blanks for a couple of weeks, will still be nailed and selected ... I worry that a couple a flat performances by Martial will see others getting game time

I brought him in before the city game..

I may consider changing him on my WC gwk 15 - But I don't see the need to atm as can't see him being dropped on current form.

I could see the reintroduction of Kaku, Alexis, Lingard, alongside Mata, Rashford, Martial taking the emphasis away from Martial.

All 6 of them will get minutes & there are 9 games in 5 weeks from GW13 so cant see anyone playing them all.

I don’t have a Martial and not planning to get him, but he’s had a great 5 games. Can’t see him scoring 10 games in a row though

I think this is the point - his form has benefited from the absence of some big players and personalities ... those players are returning and I am not sure Martial will be effective as he has been.

Congrats to those who have benefited from his points already, but will it continue and is he worth bringing in now ?

I said at the start of the season that I would not be buying Salah... I had him last year, late on, to great effect... gained a load of value, but others ahead of me had gained so much more... Any one-player team will always face a horrendous time the following year - once a player of exceptional quality like that becomes a known quantity, they're easily countered in a fair world... Mahrez, Salah now...

Still hoping Mitrović sparks... at this stage I don't want to ship him out only to see him bundle home two penalties in some slobberknocker match, and the money in for him wouldn't really see massive value available otherwise...

    1. Gegenpress
      • 7 Years

You say that like Salah is having a shocker..

People like you are saying he's being 'easily countered' and in poor form, there's only 4 players in fpm who've scored more points then him this season whilst he's been in poor form as you said.

Just imagine when he starts going..

Yes he's not getting a bucket full of double figure scores but as I said only 4 players have outscored him on fpl..

The difference this season is we're seeing Liverpool manage games when we have a lead we're protecting it as we now have a defence that can do that. It's a long season and we're playing it smart conserving energy.. Also Salah had a full season last season played pretty much all the league games and the full Champions league run.. Followed by a World Cup in which he was still half fit!

Salah's also getting chances, which don't seem to be slowing down I think him and hazard are pretty much essential in terms of midfield.

Well no, but the whole point of the game is to try and get advantage over a significant portion of others... Salah has scored highly, but he wasn't doing that at the start of the season - if I shelled out Salah money at the start, I'm not seeing points elsewhere in my team because I'm limited in who I can buy...

Now, I'll put my hand up here, I'm not a member, and every year I say I'll sign up, get access to more stats, more data, and I never do... But I'd rather have Hazard over Salah, or Sterling or Mané... As it is, I have Hazard, Bernado, Richarlison, Anderson and Gnarls Barkley... & even if Salah started a scoring run, I'd be mad to try and jump on board now because a 15 point return for a 13 million player is not as good as the points I could get from the combined 18 million of Haz and Felipe, on average at least... but I could be wrong, I could be soooo right I can't even see how right I am... I picked van Dijk for this GW gone, and he was sailing towards 3 BPs only for the fullback assists... But I legit won't buy Salah. At 13 million the value simply isn't there.... even if he's still at starting price... I've eked out a modest .5 million team value gain, so I know I'm winning somewhere.

            Kane last 5 gwks - 17 points

            Salah last 5 gwks - 36 points

            The price difference? 0.6m

Re-think your conclusion of 'At 13 million the value simply isn't there)

Salah's first 3 games he got 8, 9, 8 (yes, he dipped in form after that for a few games but this was all during his issues with the Egypt national team and media surrounding it which may have been the cause)..

I get your point in that there's value elsewhere in midfield but I don't think you'll find the same sort of consistency through players like Barkley, Bernardo and Richarlison.. I'm looking at bringing in Rich and Anderson for Shaq and Martial in the long run but keeping Salah and Haz.. It also gives you another captaincy choice.

I agree his price point is high, but there'll be a time (very soon before Jan I reckon) when he get's back to back double figures and that's when he'll pay his managers back especially the ones that cap him. He seems to be coming back into form and of course he's playing OOP now too.

    2. Maximus Bonimus Pointimus
      • 14 Years

Lots of people balked at his price. I think he’s done well though - he’s delivered in his captaincy games & is a Watford haul away from being a massive bandwagon again

      1. Gegenpress
        • 7 Years
        5 years, 5 months ago

He's also a fairly consistent cap choice.

The main frustrating thing is his BAPS - but he's not far off from getting double figures again.

I agree in that he's a haul away from being a bandwagon again and I find a lot of people will struggle to fit him in if they don't have him.

I also owned Mitrovic, but the value Ings/Jiminez offers for 1 m less at the moment can't be denied.

That 1m saved can give me Kane over Kun, Sterling over Haz or a Spurs def over TAA if required.

    6x38=228 for forward
    8x38=304 for mid
Those are pretty good season tally for any player
So i guess regardless of price any place who can score one goal a game ( not counting hauls) should be pretty good right.

"Where Klopp feels he will need extra support in midfield he prefers 4-3-3. This normally is away from home and in my opinion explains the drop in output from Salah"

this makes no sense, klopp played 4-3-3 all last season and it benefited Salah massively.
