Expected goals and assists, form vs overperforming players, luck in FPL, personality types, they’ve all been debated to death during the international break. It’s been a long two weeks.

We need the Premier League back for our sanity. Three international breaks before December is not good for the health and well being of a fantasy manager. Thankfully, the next one is not until March.

This break will be remembered as ‘the flag break’. FPL teams are littered with yellow flags due to a contagious outbreak of the ‘international injury’.

The remedy for such an injury is usually two weeks of rest and relaxation with a full recovery expected within two weeks.

The press conferences are going to be more important than ever this week to find out if any of the flagged players are indeed injured.

Benjamin Mendy (£6.4m) is one confirmed casualty ahead of Gameweek 13 after undergoing knee surgery. His first thought after the operation was his owners…

Mendy replacements

The Frenchman is in a lot of teams with managers now looking for a replacement. The obvious move is to switch him for his team-mate Aymeric Laporte (£6.0m) who has played every minute of Manchester City’s league matches this season, racking up seven clean sheets. As City’s only left-footed centre-back, his place in the team looks secure, maybe even more so now with Mendy out.

For those who don’t own Marcos Alonso (£7.1m) or Andrew Robertson (£6.5m), the Mendy injury offers a route to one of them (depending on space in the budget for Alonso).

Taking money out of defence is another option. Matt Doherty (£4.9m) has been excellent for Wolves this season bombing forward from right-wingback. He’s got more shots on target than any other defender this season (8). Wolves face Huddersfield (home) and Cardiff (away) next.

Everton’s Lucas Digne (£4.8m) is another who could prove to be good value. Only Jose Holebas (£4.8m) has created more chances than the Toffees left-back this season when it comes to defenders. Marco Silva’s side has three favourable home fixtures in their next four.

Managerial change at Craven Cottage

Slavisa Jokanovic became the first manager to lose his job this season during the break. He was swiftly replaced by Claudio Ranieri. Will we see an instant improvement from the Cottagers this weekend?

For those who own the likes of Aleksandar Mitrovic (£6.6m) or Andre Schürle (£5.9m), it might be worth holding on to them for the Southampton fixture on Saturday.

For non-owners, it’s a case of ‘wait and see’ with Fulham to assess how they set up under the Italian.

The likes of Tom Cairney (£4.8m) and Ryan Sessegnon (£6.0m) could become options for the festive fixtures.

Gameweek 13 captaincy

It’s going to be an interesting Gameweek with no standout captaincy option.

A lot of managers have had twelve consecutive returns from their captaincy decisions largely down to the home/away rotation of Sergio Aguero (£11.4m) and Mohamed Salah (£13.0m).

It could be a case of ‘unlucky for some’ #13 with the armband decision this week.

Richarlison (£6.9m) is currently leading our poll but will those managers be brave enough to follow through with it by the time Saturday rolls around?

Transfer plans

When I make my moves on Friday night, it will have been twenty-one days since I last made a transfer. There should be a reward for that kind of patience because it’s painful.

I’ve had to look at Ross Barkley (£6.0m) in my team for those twenty-one days. Shipping him for Richarlison will feel good.

Kieran Trippier (£6.2m) to Matt Doherty (£4.9m) is likely to be my second free transfer but a lot can change between now and the deadline with doubts over the likes of Danny Ings (£5.5m) and James Maddison (£6.8m).

Good luck to all in Gameweek 13.

    Ederson
    Alonso - Robertson - Vinagre
    Hazard - Salah - Mane - Fraser - Anderson
    Arnie - Jiminez

Anyone getting rid of AWB? As nice as its been to have a 4.0 starter, there are now better value options cooing up all over the place in defence.

With Alonso, Robbo, Laporte, Trippier looking good in the premium slots, and Doherty, Digne, TAA, Balbuena, Dunk, Duffy etc looking set for big things for not much more €€ than AWB, can we really afford to give a precious defence slot to him over Christmas?

I'm (reluctantly) preparing to say goodbye I think.

With those three though are you missing out on one of Man city/Alonso/Robbo? Trippier will be hot property in 10 days also

Then you have TAA, Digne, Balbuena who all have high upside for low €€

        1. GENERATION X
          • 12 Years
          7 years, 7 months ago

It will likely be Alonso and TAA to make up the 5. Selling Trippier as I just think the rotation will be too much. My TV is not great...

    5. MTPockets
      7 years, 7 months ago

Can't see better value for the price and upcoming fixtures, so keeping him.

      1. Maximus Bonimus Pointimus
        • 16 Years
        7 years, 7 months ago

Is value a bit of a misnomer for AWB though? There are lots of defenders offering better points per million than him... And for MORE budget which is anyways more difficult.

TAA, Doherty and Duffy just to select three are all outperforming AWB on value...

And the budget saving with AWB is usually funneled into attack, where value generally gets worse per million

        1. MTPockets
          7 years, 7 months ago

I meant for that low price, and considering future fixtures not past. Then we have fixtures improving for spurs, arsenal who don't offer cheap picks, so want more money available elsewhere. Worse value per million - maybe but I seldom play more than 3 defenders regardless so prefer to spend as little as possible on bench rotators.

    6. Bruin

You can’t play all 5 defenders so why would you bother upgrading him. His fixtures are getting better. Why would you pay more for a player that like him will most likely stay on your bench each week.

      1. Maximus Bonimus Pointimus
        • 16 Years

I think the fixture congestion more than justifies having a better player than AWB as second sub - benches are definitely coming into action for the next 9 GWs

Should have read “won’t” play 5. He is playing 3 4 3 so will generally have 2 defenders on the bench. From experience even at Christmas he will rarely need to use two never mind 3 subs. My point is why spend more on your bench than you need to. Just my thoughts

Personally no because I have fabianski. But I understand your logic and don’t see him as being essential just because he’s playing and cheap. But I’m happy with him and Duffy on the bench for now and allows me to bring Martial in.

Hey guys, 2 FT and 0.2 ITB. Mendy out is priority but should I save my other transfer or maybe upgrade Bednarek or Mitro? Maybe Mitro is could benefit from new manager bounce?

    Hart - Patricio
    Robbo - Duffy - AWB - Mendy - Bednarek
    Salah - Haz - Richarlison - Fraser - Cairney
    Aguero - Arnie - Mitro

Seen many do something similar but I wouldn't. Bournemouth are high scoring team, wolves are low scoring.

Wouldn’t ditch Wilson. Could very well score against Arsenal and he has Huddersfield in two weeks.

Was the same for Deulofeu but got corrected. If post doesn't get noticed just raise it again with a mod.

Quite concerned with news of lamela and vardy doubt as i was hopefully getting rid of firmino this week!

My original plan was Firm and hojberg to martial and jimenez.

Should i stretch to a -8 to include lamela to richalrison in that deal?

    Thanks guys!

I don't like hits, but feel that Rich has a serious chance of making up those 4 points this week

I dont like them either, but i feel like firmino has to go, and my hand was forced last week with maddison injury so i dropped him for lamela!

-8 is drastic however, i could always keep it at -4 and do hojberg to rich instead of martial?

My squad needs an overhaul and sadly west hams fixture has kept me from doing what i want to haha

Got 0.6 ITB and 2 FTs, not sure what to do with them?

    Patricio (Fabianski)
    Alonso, Robbo, Laporte, Doherty (WB)
    Hazard, Mane, Rich, Bilva (Chalobah)
    Kun, Wilson (Arnie)

    A) Bilva -> Martial
    B) Chalobah -> Camarasa
    C) Mane + Laporte -> Sterling + Digne
    D) Wilson + Chalobah + Laporte -> Jimenez + Martial + Mariappa (-4)
