Pep Guardiola threw the Fantasy Premier League community some clues to his Gameweek 18 team selection in Manchester City’s League Cup win at Leicester.

The defending champions made a string of changes as they eliminated the Foxes in a penalty shoot-out.

We’ve got all the talking points in this Scout Notes article.

Leicester City 1-1 Manchester City (1-3 on penalties)

Goals: Marc Albrighton (£5.1m) | Kevin de Bruyne (£9.7m)

Assists: Wilfried Ndidi (£4.9m) | Nicolas Otamendi (£6.1m)

Leroy Sané (£9.7m) looks in line to start for Manchester City when they host Crystal Palace in Gameweek 18. The German international was not even in the matchday squad on Tuesday night as the Citizens progressed in the League Cup. That will massive boost his credentials as a captain candidate given his remarkable consistency this season. He has blanked in just one start this season, scoring 10 points in his most recent Etihad Stadium.

There might be slightly mild concern for options such as Raheem Sterling (£11.6m) and Sergio Aguero (£11.2m) who both played their part at the King Power Stadium. The Argentinian striker started the match but was replaced in the 75th minute by Gabriel Jesus (£10.1m), suggesting that Pep Guardiola was at least trying to manage his minutes.

Meanwhile, Sterling owners would have been in high spirits when they saw that he was benched against Leicester but he did enter the fray in the 66th minute, coming on for Brahim Diaz (£4.7m). The fact that he featured only in the last 24 minutes against Everton should mean that he is sufficiently rested to start on Saturday. The fact that his main competitor for the right-wing position Riyad Mahrez (£8.5m) played the whole 90 minutes on Tuesday, also plays into Sterling’s hands too. He will have a point to prove in Gameweek 18 too as he missed his penalty in the shootout.

Kevin de Bruyne (£9.7m) reminded us all of the quality he has to offer as he scored Manchester City’s only goal of the tie. It was a spectacular effort which will have some Fantasy managers eyeing him up for inclusion as soon as he looks to be returning to the first-team situation.

“I’ve been out, so long so to play 70 minutes is a really good sign for me personally. I feel a little bit stiff but I’m happy to contribute again.” – Kevin de Bruyne

John Stones (£5.3m) returned from his injury doubts to play in central midfield. That’s not the first time he has fulfilled that role in a cup match, but it may be some time before we see him do it in the Premier League. Fernandinho (£5.4m) and Bernardo Silva (£7.5m) were two more players absent from the matchday squad while Ilkay Gündogan (£5.4m) was involved only as a substitute against Leicester.

Aymeric Laporte (£6.1m) was not involved at all while Fabian Delph (£5.3m) was an unused substitute. However, Kyle Walker (£6.5m) played the full 90 minutes, after completing a 90-minute outing against Everton, so it will be interesting to see if he holds onto the right-back berth on Saturday. Vincent Kompany‘s (£5.2m) absence was due to an injury, according to Guardiola.

Jamie Vardy (£8.8m) was absent for Leicester City with Claude Puel keen to not to aggravate an injury. The Foxes manager is hoping to have him fit in time for Saturday’s trip to Chelsea though.

“I hope we can have him on Saturday. He wasn’t fit enough for today. He has trained once and then played against Palace in the Premier League for 90 minutes. It was important to keep him fresh. We have to be careful to avoid another injury. I hope he can play against Chelsea on Saturday.” – Claude Puel

There were plenty of changes made for Leicester although first-team regulars Harry Maguire (£5.4m) and Demarai Gray (£5.4m) both played the full 90 minutes.

Marc Albrighton (£5.1m) and James Maddison (£6.8m) featured as substitutes but should be fresh enough to remain in the starting line-up at Stamford Bridge.

Leicester City XI (4-5-1): Ward; Fuchs, Maguire, Söyüncü, Simpson; Gray, Ndidi, Iborra (Albrighton 61′), Choudhury, Ghezzal (Maddison 53′); Iheanacho (Pereira 81′).

Manchester City XI (4-3-3): Murić; Zinchenko, Otamendi, Garcia, Walker; Foden, Stones, De Bruyne (Gündogan 71′); Diaz (Sterling 66′), Aguero (Jesus 76′), Mahrez.

For the 8,000 people on here who keep asking Sane or Sterling but can't be bothered to look:

CPL chances conceded (last 4 weeks)
    Left flank (e.g. Sterling) = 5
    Centre = 6
    Right flank (i.e. Sane) = 12

    Sorted.

Sterling hasn't had the same playing time, so a tad of an unfair comparison.

It's where Palace have conceded their chances from. Nothing to do with City players.

I have both and I'm leaning towards Sterling.

Those stats are affected by the way the opposition have attacked them in the last 4 weeks. It depends on who they faced. So I don't think they have much impact on the City game.

      Sterling v PvA sounds tasty.

Yes. But if you have big hitting midfield it can be a good option.
      Midfield of something like
      Sane+Sterling/Salah+Hazard+Fando/Snoddy+Siggy/Richa
      Could be golden

Solskjær feels like a commercial appointment to help bring fans back as profits were dipping under Jose. It doesn't seem one based on managerial competence.

Less enthused to buy merch etc, not proud of their club. And yes, I think Solskjaer will bring a lot of enthusiasm back over Mourinho.

Not sure they are going to start shifting millions of more in merch because they have appointed Solskjaer as caretaker manager for half a season, and even more doubtful this is the reason they have appointed him! But, each to their own opinion 🙂

      Exactly.
Just to get the good feeling back. Can't blame them. Our season is over.
      CL position looks highly unlikely.
CL draw with PSG is cruel 😀
      FA cup only to play.
I think they will just get players like Herrera,Ddg,martial, mata tied up to contracts & wait for new manager to make a massive overhaul of squad.

No not really he has little to no high level experience also seems like an easy one to get rid of at the end of the season.
Nor does he seem like the type that will be able to handle the big egos, could be wrong but overall seems like a commercial one as you said bit of a time pass appointment

Seems like Sane (C) is the obvious choice this week. The FFS captain poll is redundant due to them starting it a week before the Gameweek deadline. People start voting before we've received all information from midweek games and press conferences. In my opinion they should start the poll 24 hours before the deadline similar to what the do with the Scout Picks.

Mods, where are u? In last 12 hours:

Sane (C) fully rested, better form, less owned, likely to play more minutes
Sane (C) is the sensible option. He was fully rested last night and is more likely to play the full 90 than Sterling, as he featured against Leicester and had looked out of form.
Sane (C) the safe choice. I wouldn't trust Sterling with the captaincy after last nights game.
Sane (C) the safe and sensible option. Sterling definitely not worth a -4 after tonight's performance and penalty miss. Thousands have already sold this week.
This is the bandwagon move that most are doing this week. £2.0 saving is huge and Sane is the more nailed option out of the two. Sterling has only started 2 PL games out of the last 4 and also played in the ELC tonight whilst Sane was fully rested

Cup rest, see update above from MTPOCKETS

"Hoew talking about Cup game - "Callum Wilson had a hamstring problem and we rushed him back to be fit for Wolves, we still have to be careful with him to make sure he can perform over the coming games"

FAnderson & Alonso for Sane & Balbuena for a hit?

Got Hazard, Salah and Kane coverage.

The projection tool keeps giving me these big numbers....

i agree, he's doing well. Snoddy will have to come in for him with the spare change.

Would you start Jimenez or Doherty ahead of any of the below this GW?

    Fab
    Lovren Kola Schindler
    Fraser Felipe Rich Sterling Sane
    Auba Kane

Doherty over Schindler, think Soton will score and Doherty more likely to get offensive points.

    Should we ditch Wilson?

"We have still got to be careful with him at this moment but he has made good progress."

    1. MTPockets
      7 years, 8 months ago

He played last game so don't know why flagged again. As far as I can gauge recent comments only relate to caution over squeezing in the Cup match.

But he's another who is not fully fit, and plays City and Chelsea in the next 4. Really want Ings soon though, like this new manager.

Fitness certainly an issue. Valid point made on the Scoutcast that if you're going to bring in Ings, it really ought to be now. I wonder how much gametime Wilson will get this week then his fixtures turn bad too

On WC which team you would prefer. And what improvements you would make?

    Team A

    Fabianski - Button
    Doherty - Robertson - Alonso - Digne - AWB
    Richarlison - Snodgrass - Sane - Sterling - Hazard
    Chicharito - Ings - Aubameyang

    0.0 itb

    Team B

    Fabianski - Button
    Doherty - LOVREN - Alonso - BEDNAREK - AWB
    Richarlison - Snodgrass - Sane - POGBA - Hazard
    AGUERO - Ings - Aubameyang

1.5 itb Aguero could be also Kane or Lukaku and Doherty could be Digne.

    TIA
