Pep Guardiola threw the Fantasy Premier League community some clues to his Gameweek 18 team selection in Manchester City’s League Cup win at Leicester.

The defending champions made a string of changes as they eliminated the Foxes in a penalty shoot-out.

We’ve got all the talking points in this Scout Notes article.

Leicester City 1-1 Manchester City (1-3 on penalties)

Goals: Marc Albrighton (£5.1m) | Kevin de Bruyne (£9.7m)

Assists: Wilfried Ndidi (£4.9m) | Nicolas Otamendi (£6.1m)

Leroy Sané (£9.7m) looks in line to start for Manchester City when they host Crystal Palace in Gameweek 18. The German international was not even in the matchday squad on Tuesday night as the Citizens progressed in the League Cup. That will massive boost his credentials as a captain candidate given his remarkable consistency this season. He has blanked in just one start this season, scoring 10 points in his most recent Etihad Stadium.

There might be slightly mild concern for options such as Raheem Sterling (£11.6m) and Sergio Aguero (£11.2m) who both played their part at the King Power Stadium. The Argentinian striker started the match but was replaced in the 75th minute by Gabriel Jesus (£10.1m), suggesting that Pep Guardiola was at least trying to manage his minutes.

Meanwhile, Sterling owners would have been in high spirits when they saw that he was benched against Leicester but he did enter the fray in the 66th minute, coming on for Brahim Diaz (£4.7m). The fact that he featured only in the last 24 minutes against Everton should mean that he is sufficiently rested to start on Saturday. The fact that his main competitor for the right-wing position Riyad Mahrez (£8.5m) played the whole 90 minutes on Tuesday, also plays into Sterling’s hands too. He will have a point to prove in Gameweek 18 too as he missed his penalty in the shootout.

Kevin de Bruyne (£9.7m) reminded us all of the quality he has to offer as he scored Manchester City’s only goal of the tie. It was a spectacular effort which will have some Fantasy managers eyeing him up for inclusion as soon as he looks to be returning to the first-team situation.

“I’ve been out, so long so to play 70 minutes is a really good sign for me personally. I feel a little bit stiff but I’m happy to contribute again.” – Kevin de Bruyne

John Stones (£5.3m) returned from his injury doubts to play in central midfield. That’s not the first time he has fulfilled that role in a cup match, but it may be some time before we see him do it in the Premier League. Fernandinho (£5.4m) and Bernardo Silva (£7.5m) were two more players absent from the matchday squad while Ilkay Gündogan (£5.4m) was involved only as a substitute against Leicester.

Aymeric Laporte (£6.1m) was not involved at all while Fabian Delph (£5.3m) was an unused substitute. However, Kyle Walker (£6.5m) played the full 90 minutes, after completing a 90-minute outing against Everton, so it will be interesting to see if he holds onto the right-back berth on Saturday. Vincent Kompany‘s (£5.2m) absence was due to an injury, according to Guardiola.

Jamie Vardy (£8.8m) was absent for Leicester City with Claude Puel keen to not to aggravate an injury. The Foxes manager is hoping to have him fit in time for Saturday’s trip to Chelsea though.

“I hope we can have him on Saturday. He wasn’t fit enough for today. He has trained once and then played against Palace in the Premier League for 90 minutes. It was important to keep him fresh. We have to be careful to avoid another injury. I hope he can play against Chelsea on Saturday.” – Claude Puel

There were plenty of changes made for Leicester although first-team regulars Harry Maguire (£5.4m) and Demarai Gray (£5.4m) both played the full 90 minutes.

Marc Albrighton (£5.1m) and James Maddison (£6.8m) featured as substitutes but should be fresh enough to remain in the starting line-up at Stamford Bridge.

Leicester City XI (4-5-1): Ward; Fuchs, Maguire, Söyüncü, Simpson; Gray, Ndidi, Iborra (Albrighton 61′), Choudhury, Ghezzal (Maddison 53′); Iheanacho (Pereira 81′).

Manchester City XI (4-3-3): Murić; Zinchenko, Otamendi, Garcia, Walker; Foden, Stones, De Bruyne (Gündogan 71′); Diaz (Sterling 66′), Aguero (Jesus 76′), Mahrez.

Tbh, all people make mistakes, even journos. This has not happened often, and I will continue to look forward to Scout Notes.

However, my biggest problem with Munday is that he majorly lags in every video. It makes watching it much less enjoyable. At least for us non-natives who cannot always get the grasp from the context when lag makes us lose sound for a bit. Please fix this, as it ruins an otherwise pleasant FFS experience.

(Tip: spend more money on your internet line, send video from a place close to your router/repeater, and make sure there are no others using your internet line for dowbloading/streaming at the same time)

Could be several things. Not all areas offer best broadband connection, regardless of willingness to pay. Hardware. Real life such doing video evenings/weekends when kids are online. Not a big issue imo although hadn't considered the 'non-natives' perspective

Who's been your biggest troll this Season, for me I think it's Aubameyang.

I started the Season with him, gameweeks 1-3 then got rid, I've recently got him back in, gameweeks 15-17.

    For when I've had him (GW 1, 2, 3, 15, 16, 17):

0 goals, 1 assist, 15 points (2.5 points per game)

    For when I haven't had him (GW 4 - 14)

10 goals, 3 assists, 85 points (7.73 points per game)

Could be wrong but I see KDB coming off the bench this weekend. Bernardo having the night off makes me think this. No harm in getting him early though, he can do damage from the bench and it's only going to be a matter of time before he's starting and probably delivering.

Enjoyed that scoutcast. Always good having Andy & Az on and Joe was quite funny for a change 😀

Lots of conflicting thoughts which makes a good watch, would have like to seen you touch on players like Wilson, with Chelsea confirming they’re very interested in signing him- how could this affect his playing time.
(If this goes through he will be FPL gold) even more so than he is now.

And also if the Poch > Utd rumours could also have an effect on Spurs assets.

Other than that great job, enjoyed it!

Very unlikely he plays two up top during the Christams period. He has only two senior strikers and would always like to keep one fresh for rotation.

Some stats to mull over when everyone thinks the trend is to move away from backs to mids.
Before I carry on, it is a minute test segment bot a 70k ranking it could be considered a reasonable trend.
The big 3 (Robbo Mendy Alonso) are no longer viable and with TAA and Trips having injuries choices are limited.
I split the 17 weeks ito 1st 9 and last 9. The 9th GW being duplicated. I believe it is a fair run of fixures to pick up trends.

    Defenders 1-9 (players 28) (points 157) (points/player 5.61) (points/mil 9.10)
    Defenders 9-17 (players 33) (points 163) (points/player 4.94) (points/mil 8.18)

The reason for playing more defenders in the second half was the history of value for money, reverting to a back 4 on many occasions. Even though there is a .7 point drop, it does not tell the full story. There was a general drop off on total team points, mainly due to Europe Int breaks and injury/rotation. Dropping value from your defenders (Alonso to Luiz or Robbo to TAA) is obviously viable but if you think it is more viable to get mids then think again.

    Mids 1-9 (players 35) (points 182) (points/player 5.20) (points/mil 5.41)
    Mids 9-18 (players 38) (points 182) (points/player 4.79) (points/mil 5.27)

There are no captain point included which will have an impact with the squad, but the irony is the likes of Alonso and Robertson would equal if not outscore your mid choices)

I write all this because it is the flavor of the month to say the tide is swinging. Well the stats don't back this up in my case.
To make matters worse, I pulled out the most used mids against defenders i have utilized most.
    Robbo 13 games ave 6.85 pts/game
    Alonso 12 games ave 6.25 pts/game
    Doherty 9 games ave 6.11 pts/game
    Fraser 12 games ave 5.75 pts/game
    Mane 7 games ave 6.43 pts/game
    Salah 9 games ave 7.00 pts/game
Maybe I am missing something but it is food for thought.

      I agree with all points.
Just that recent form suggest that premium defense is not that important than premium mids IMO.
After Christmas when Kane gets outof the team, Alonso/Mendy + Taa will come back

I did and it can be so misleading. I have Sterling Sane Son. Rotation can create an epic fail. The element of luck does apply. I had 31 points on the bench last week with Ings the most expensive player!

As I said maybe dropping value in defense is ok, especially when wing backs are more rotation risks. But the value for money is startlingly in favor of a 5 3 2 formation.

What do you guys think of:

Hennessey, Hojbjerg and Lacazette to Wilson, Snodgrass and Lloris for -4?

Allows me to rotate really well with Bournemouth and Wolves mixed fixtures and have a decent bench for this busy period. Also Hen's got terrible fixtures and is my only keeper at the moment.

Any Fulham fans ( or others) that can tell me if Kamara is liked by Ranieri? I'm tired of the rotation at Arsenal and thinking of selling Lacazette for Kamara and upgrading Hojbjerg to Hazard and play 352. Kamara won't play much ( just as Hojbjerg didnt), but I'd want him to at least play most matches so he can auto-sub in 2 points or maybe sometimes the odd 6-7.

Since Ranieri joined them, he has played alot. Missed a couple of sitters last match, but it show he gets to them chances. My two cents is that he is nailed

Ranieri so far gave him the chance and he scored twice in three games. Best player in their last game too. Cant see why he would be dropped unless his form drops which can happen to any player.

What do you mean Hojbjerg didn't play much?
He is always in starting line up if fit. He missed first 2 GW's and 10th.
He doesn't score much but definitely plays.

I didnt mean Hojbjerg didnt play much, Lacazette is the problem for me. My other strikers are Jimenez and Kane. I'm not too fond of the other striker options and happy with my midfield so only way I can bring Hazard in ( who I really want) is to upgrade Hojbjerg and hope Kamara can do the same Hojbjerg has done for me this season

Owner here. The Fulham forums were backing him to start last week, which obviously happened, but Sessegnon was out. If he was fit it's not guaranteed he would have started. He does seem to have been one of the better performers in recent weeks but no way is he anywhere near nailed.
