A small portion of the current top 10,000 Fantasy Premier League managers took a leaf out of David Wardale’s book and ‘Wasted their Wildcard’ in the first 20 Gameweeks of the season.

Just under 97.08% of those in the top echelon of the game used the chip which was available to them between Gameweek 1 and late December, meaning that just under 3% did not.

These were not even inactive players either. I looked at their teams and confirmed that most of them are actually active managers who change their teams every week.

It could be the case that they did not know the chip expires before the turning of the year, which seems more likely than them knowing the expiry date and not using the chip even to take a couple of hits for free.

The percentage of managers in an overall random sample of 50,000 teams that didn’t use the first Wildcard chip is around 49%.

Taking a closer look at those teams, we find that they are mostly inactive, hence the informal name of ‘dead teams’. So, we know there is a minimum of around 45% inactivity in the game at this point.

The actual percentage will be bigger since many dead teams may have used their Wildcard early in the season before they stopped playing the game.

A future article will look at that question in more detail to quantify the definition of a dead team and calculate how many of them exist.

The arrival of the second Wildcard encouraged 2.55% of the top 10,000 managers to use it right away this week. Their most selected players are shown below.

The resulting chip usage percentages in the top 10k are as follows

Chip Top 10k usage Overall usage
Wildcard 2.55% 3.64%
Bench Boost 9.97% 16.76%
Triple Captain 11.77% 26.21%
Free Hit 12.93% 19.84%

It is interesting to note how low those percentages are in the top 10k. In previous seasons, it was the case that many managers who enter the top 10k early are those who utilized their chips earlier and took the advantage over more experienced managers who delay their chips till the blank and double Gameweeks.

The percentages in the table above show that most of the managers who are currently enjoying outstanding overall ranks were not particularly helped by the usage of early chips. In fact, no chip has been used by more than 13% of the top 10,000 managers.

The figure above shows that around 75% of the top 10,000 managers have all of their chips intact. If they hold onto them for around 10 more Gameweeks when the blanks and doubles usually start, then we could see something different this year.

As three-quarters of active managers have all the freedom to deploy their chips in any order to cover the double and blank Gameweeks, it might be more challenging to rise up the ranks using late chips strategies like last season.

We will keep monitoring chip usage in the top 10k in the following weeks as we’re entering the second half of the season.

Not these moves. Just considerably weakens your team. Arsenal have West Ham who can't ever keep a clean. There's a lot of Salah panic going around, so be wise with your moves.

Man Utd had a whopping 72 shots conceded in GW's 16-20... the worst in the league apart from one side (Cardiff)

Meanwhile only Liverpool (18) and Man Utd themselves (17) have scored more than Spurs (15) in that same time period...

Kane to have another productive day at the office next week?

I think he possibly could you know 🙂

10 consecutive starts with attacking returns - ridiculous levels of consistency - 9G, 5A, 10 baps in that time - and he hasn't even really hauled yet, when that comes there will be some serious team shredding to fit him in.

Salah absolutely dwarfs everyone in the RMT tool for the next 6 though - he is 5 points ahead of Haz in second and 10 ahead of Kane/Sterling/Auba in third

I think as long as you're buying their attackers you're fine - just stay the hell away from their defence

Who is buying defenders? They will play like Liverpool 2 seasons ago. Lots of goals, but a small amount of games their poor defensive structure will lead to loss of points against weaker opponents.

Really stuck with my team. I have no idea what to do now. Initial plan was Luiz+Stephens > TAA+Richarlison, but Luiz's haul last gw and Richarlison's poor perfomance today made me doubt in this move...

    My situation:
    2FT, 2.2m ITB

    Fabianski,Hamer
    Robertson, Digne, Doherty, Luiz, AWB
    Salah, Hazard, Pogba, Anderson, Stephens
    Jimenez, Kane, Ings

    I could make:
    A Luiz+Digne > TAA+Richarlison (like above)
    B Ings>Rashford (but Rash is a doubt)
C Anderson > Eriksen (but Anderson has Brighton and Eriksen United next)
D some sexy moves like Stephens>Camarasa or getting second playing gk

    Please help!

    Happy new year everyone.

Any reason not to do Alonso to David Luiz? Not sure if i'll use my wildcard right away, it'd make sense with 10 days between this and the next GW.

For now i have two free transfers and i'm planning on doing Kolasinac to TAA and Alonso to Luiz(TAA is rising in price and Alonso is dropping).

Alonso has been a massive disappointment for a while; Luiz has scored way more points since GW 12 and he's also much cheaper.

                I guess to sum up my view on it;
Rivals had Digne when he got big points, I ginored him cost me. Got him in reluctantly, because I do not trust Everton defence and I think cs is important. The only reason I got him in is because of his fixtures, but if they cant keep cs then I would never have got him. So its kind of personal, as to why I chose him in first place.
Im sure he will get attackingreturns and I hope, but he is on my radar to ship out now unless they do tighten up. Based on Silvas recent defensive records it does not bode well, funny considering before the epl he had the best or one of the best home records in europe

It just feels like its a classic case, of bring him in when you were reluctant at first and then when you finally bite the bulelt it all drys up. If thats the case then he is in line for a red or ban for the icing on the cake, but yea cant ditch yet. I will give him the greens, but my expectations are low, particuarly in regard to cs. Have no faith in them keeping CS

Kane to Kun was painful. Then again it’s the reason I have Hazard(C) and I have a feeling he’ll go on riot against a tired Southampton. Hopefully Aguero will be better long term than Kane - blank against Pool and then hat trick against Wolves with low ownership would be nice!

From those options, I'd rather keep Auba

Sane auba to salah 7.3 fwd & probably a -4 holebas to taa

2- sane luiz richar -4 to bednarek westwood salah, leaving funds for following week getting taa for holebas and maybe also another -4 snod to someone

Son + Auba to Salah + Jimenez (-4)?

Have 0.1 to play with so may do one this week and one next for free.

How many games is Son away and is he flagged while away so his price doesn't drop

He'll be red flagged but not immune to drops in price.

Price protection is only when a flag goes from red to available.

Depends on how far they go. But probably around 3 games.

      He can drop.

Republic of Korea are favourites to win the cup. The final takes place February 1st. Tottenham plays a game lunch time February 2nd. Hence, if the Korean national team lives up to expectations, he will be out for three PL gameweeks. If not, most likely two. But also remember that TOT faces MUN the gameweek before he leaves, and they are looking better these days.

Auba has the form and fixtures so aguero would have to produce something special

No, let Aguero prove his case first. What has Auba done wrong?

Can’t have them all and Auba is outperforming Aguero right now, and all season long in fact.

      I’d keep Auba.

Auba the highest scoring forward so far. And unlucky not to have 1-2 more goals today

Think I'm just thinking of old times and inevitably have a soft spot for Kun.

    Fab (3.9)
    Robbo-Doherty-Digne (Holebas-AWB)
    Hazard-Salah-Pogba-Rich-F.Anderson
    Kane-Deeney (Kamara)

If I have 2FT, 0.3m and this kind of squad, what move looks better?

    A) Holebas+Deeney to Bamba+Barnes
    B) Holebas+Deeney to Ings+Pereira
    C) save
    D) any other?
