A small portion of the current top 10,000 Fantasy Premier League managers took a leaf out of David Wardale’s book and ‘Wasted their Wildcard’ in the first 20 Gameweeks of the season.

Just under 97.08% of those in the top echelon of the game used the chip which was available to them between Gameweek 1 and late December, meaning that just under 3% did not.

These were not even inactive players either. I looked at their teams and confirmed that most of them are actually active managers who change their teams every week.

It could be the case that they did not know the chip expires before the turning of the year, which seems more likely than them knowing the expiry date and not using the chip even to take a couple of hits for free.

The percentage of managers in an overall random sample of 50,000 teams that didn’t use the first Wildcard chip is around 49%.

Taking a closer look at those teams, we find that they are mostly inactive, hence the informal name of ‘dead teams’. So, we know there is a minimum of around 45% inactivity in the game at this point.

The actual percentage will be bigger since many dead teams may have used their Wildcard early in the season before they stopped playing the game.

A future article will look at that question in more detail to quantify the definition of a dead team and calculate how many of them exist.

The arrival of the second Wildcard encouraged 2.55% of the top 10,000 managers to use it right away this week. Their most selected players are shown below.

The resulting chip usage percentages in the top 10k are as follows

Chip Top 10k usage Overall usage
Wildcard 2.55% 3.64%
Bench Boost 9.97% 16.76%
Triple Captain 11.77% 26.21%
Free Hit 12.93% 19.84%

It is interesting to note how low those percentages are in the top 10k. In previous seasons, it was the case that many managers who enter the top 10k early are those who utilized their chips earlier and took the advantage over more experienced managers who delay their chips till the blank and double Gameweeks.

The percentages in the table above show that most of the managers who are currently enjoying outstanding overall ranks were not particularly helped by the usage of early chips. In fact, no chip has been used by more than 13% of the top 10,000 managers.

The figure above shows that around 75% of the top 10,000 managers have all of their chips intact. If they hold onto them for around 10 more Gameweeks when the blanks and doubles usually start, then we could see something different this year.

As three-quarters of active managers have all the freedom to deploy their chips in any order to cover the double and blank Gameweeks, it might be more challenging to rise up the ranks using late chips strategies like last season.

We will keep monitoring chip usage in the top 10k in the following weeks as we’re entering the second half of the season.

Watched the entire Spurs game, and tbh still not convinced with Kane who i captained as i knew he normally does well in these kind of fixtures. Is fatigue the reason or is it that Kane won't live up to his expectation this season? He has ticked points nicely over the last few i have had him but Auba is easily replicating his points and a switch to Auba will make my Son to Hazard an easier move.

Bottom line: Keep Kane or switch to Auba and bring in Hazard for Son?

In the second half alone he must have had 4/5 shots and 2/3 big chances created?

Yes he has done well but Auba missed more glorious chances today for example, could easily had a hatrick plus the assist. Auba also not depending on any creative players to do well but for Kane, Moura limits his chances while Lamela in the team is a big let OFF. Auba is 1.1M cheaper as well.

Do you really think Auba is easily replicating his points? If so it’s an easy swap and you should do it.

Kane has 44 in his last 5 GW’s... Auba has 35

Even Salah only has 38 plus whatever he gets on Thursday

Sterling has 16 + thursdays score to come

Look at Kane’s fixtures, he’ll score another 10-15 goals easily in his next 10-15 games

Some people genuinely panic when th y watch him because he’s not nippy & quick like a Salah, Haz, Sterling, Raz etc - he’s a totally different type of player, and that really doesn’t suit some folks.

He’s one for the FPL conisseurs though 😉

You are right and there is no doubt Kane is a pure goal scorer. I am just thinking if that Spurs attack is abrupted by Son and maybe an injury to one of Alli/Eriksen, they normally score less as seen earlier in the season. Son gives them width and runs and it perfectly suits their attack. Will definitely give him at least 2 more gw's and see how they do without Son and Moura/Lamela starting.

Son is such a good player that taking him out of the team has a big probability of slowing down Spurs attack. But it just makes Kane even more integral.

It’ll take a hattrick before folks believe though, but i’m Perfectly happy to hold & captain & take consistent returns every week.

Man Utd had a whopping 72 shots conceded in GW's 16-20... the worst in the league apart from one side (Cardiff)

Meanwhile only Liverpool (18) and Man Utd themselves (17) have scored more than Spurs (15) in that same time period...

Kane to have another productive day at the office next week?

Sane and Anderson -> Salah and 5.2 and below

Kane Salah Haz and even Auba all much lower maintenance.

Man Utd, Liverpool & Spurs attack’s all more potent of late.

Of course if city score 3vliverpool that might shake things up... but it’ll be against the grain...

    Richarlison
    Wilson
    Alonso(n)
    Son

Richarlison > Moura after Spurs v United?

    Or too short sighted?

Moura doesn't really have the same 'wow; factor in the team that Son has.

Hey fellas. 2 FTs and looking for advice...

    Fabianski / Hamer
    Robertson / Digne / Kolasinac / Doherty / AWB
    Hazard / Son / Pogba / Martial / Camarasa
    Kane / Aubameyang / Ings

Three transfers I'm looking to make are listed below.

    A) Son / Aubameyang >> Salah / Jimenez
    B) Kolasinac >> TAA

Which of these would be your priority for -this- GW? Part of me is hesitant in shipping Aubameyang as he is still performing, and even Son, even for one fixture. Waiting gives me longer to decide... but I do want Salah back!

Argument could be made for which one of Aubameyang/Kane to drop, and if Jimenez is the right option, but don't think any of us know the answer to that yet.

Also, what do you think about Fabianski >> Alisson?
Worth it, or is TAA better value?

Yeah, I'm surprised he is rising
Can't imagine that many people brought him this morning before 11:30 for the game against City and if people are transferring him in now for next GW it is nearly 2 weeks away with Liverpool yet to play for this GW (e.g. could get injured tomorrow)

    Help here plz
Keeping auba & getting salah, which route

A- sane richar luiz -4 to salah westwood bednarek
(Holebas + itb = 5.3 to get taa the gw after, risky if taa rised more than twice + might also do a -4 to get out snod)

B- sane richar snod luiz -8 to salah (brooks+romeu or 2 mids with 8.3) taa

    Stat talk.

Mitro has 30 SoT, only Kane and Salah have more 33. No one else is even near.

    However, they are headed attempts.

Will he start scoring or Fulham are so terrible, so we shouldn't hope?

Big enough sample size by now to know he’s super frustrating to own.
Burnley and Spurs next up so won’t be easy to score...

Mitro to Jiménez after city game looks a decent move. Currently what I’m looking at (would leave me with Kane Ings Jiménez)

    Fabianski Hamer
    Doherty Digne Shaw AWB Kiko
    Hazard Sterling Anderson Martial Pererya
    Kane Aubam Jimenez

    2 FT 0 ITB

What do you guys think of:

    1. Kane Anderson Martial Shaw > Ings Salah Pogba Bamba (-8)
    2. Kane Auba Martial Anderson > Firmino Arnie Salah Pogba (-8)
