Arsenal and West Ham buck trends in surprise London Stadium result

A below-par Arsenal performance led to an unlikely blank against West Ham on Saturday afternoon.

Unai Emery’s Gunners were uncharacteristically poor in attack and asked very few questions of their London Stadium hosts in the Gameweek 22 opener.

Why Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£11.4m) followed up the captain hype of the last seven days with a frustrating two-pointer is the focus of this latest Scout Notes article.

West Ham 1-0 Arsenal

Goals: Declan Rice (£4.4m)

Assists: Samir Nasri (£5.5m)

Arsenal were well below their usual standard for offensive play in their 1-0 defeat to West Ham on Saturday. Emery named the exact same XI that put four past Fulham in Gameweek 21, with Alexandre Lacazette (£9.4m) alongside Aubameyang in attack, but the Gunners still offered little. In the first 21 Gameweeks of the campaign the Gunners averaged 1.95 big chances and 4.8 shots on target per match; against West Ham, they averaged zero and two in those respective categories.

The defeat also seems to have exposed problems delivering away from home for Arsenal. In their last four road trips, they have now registered an expected goals score of 4.40 compared to 10.29 in their last four Emirates Stadium encounters. They have also not won away from home since their trip to Bournemouth in November.

All of that meant a blank for Aubameyang who had been backed by this author as a strong captain candidate in Gameweek 22. considering he topped the league for expected goals in the last four Gameweeks and had notched up more shots than Salah and Hazard in that time.

With Lucas Torreira (£5.0m) named on the bench for a second consecutive Premier League match, and featuring only as a 59th-minute substitute, Arsenal lacked composure in midfield. Mark Noble (£4.8m) and Declan Rice (£4.4m) were clear winners in the central battle over the inexperienced Matteo Guendouzi (£4.4m). Like what happened against Fulham, the Gunners looked a little more fluid in attack after Torreira entered the fray, but by that stage, Aubameyang could only snatch at his chances, missing a great opportunity in the 63rd minute, before Alex Iwobi (£5.4m) grazed the far post when he was freed up on the left.

“We needed to attack more, better, but they defensively worked well. We created some chances but it wasn’t enough. In the first 20 minutes when we created more it was the time we started thinking of winning this match but after it was very difficult as we didn’t impose everything that we wanted.” – Unai Emery

Emery may come in for criticism for not starting Torreira, but also over Aaron Ramsey (£7.2m), supposedly soon to leave for Juventus, improved things when he came on. That will beg more questions about why he has been left out so often, and why Emery is prepared to let him leave. Meanwhile, Mesut Özil (£8.0m) was absent from the match-day squad entirely for supposedly tactical reasons.

“I decided that the players I have here were the best for this match. We have won with him, we have lost with him, he is not one player that is for sale. We know we can’t lose him.” – Unai Emery

What made Arsenal’s goalless display all the more perplexing was the fact that West Ham’s defence was in poor shape ahead of the game. The Hammers had just one Premier League clean sheet at home prior to kick-off and had slipped into the division’s bottom-five for shots conceded in the penalty box over the previous four Gameweeks. Furthermore, West Ham had been visibly suffering in the absence of centre-back Fabian Balbuena (£4.3m) of late, the Paraguayan now ruled out for six weeks. So just as Arsenal bucked their recent trends in attack, the Hammers responded in kind by unexpectedly stifling the visitors, collecting just a second clean sheet in front of their own supporters this season.

It is rather frustrating for Fantasy managers that Manuel Pellegrini’s men struggled to keep out the likes of Watford, Cardiff and Wolves at the London Stadium, their only home shut-outs coming against Arsenal and Chelsea. That meant another nine-point haul against top opposition for Lukasz Fabianski (£4.7m), who lost roughly 80,000 owners ahead of Gameweek 22.

While West Ham secured a rare clean sheet, Emery’s defensive problems continued in the capital. Initially, there was the boost of a return to fitness for three defensive players who were yellow-flagged before kick-off. Laurent Koscielny (£5.4m) started in the back-three while Nacho Monreal (£5.4m) and Hector Bellerín (£5.4m) were named on the bench. Ainsley Maitland-Niles (£4.4m) was preferred to the latter at right back but was replaced by him in the second half. On the other flank, Sead Kolasinac (£4.9m) kept his place despite the return of Monreal.

Those returns counted for nothing in the opening minutes of the second half when Rice put the hosts in front. Koscielny continued to show his rustiness since coming back from injury as it was his poor defensive header which was pounced upon by Samir Nasri (£5.5m) in the Arsenal box. With the Gunners’ back-line not expecting to be required so quickly after the failed clearance, Rice had all the time he needed to pick out the top corner. Arsenal have now conceded 10 times in their last four away matches and only Fulham and Bournemouth have shipped more goals on their travels this season than Emery’s men. For that reason, they may continue to be targeted by those holding attacking assets of their upcoming opponents.

Marko Arnautovic (£6.9m) was back to lead the West Ham line after being substituted as a precaution in the FA Cup third round. In truth, he wasn’t a constant thorn in Arsenal’s side and actually only registered one shot in the match. The Austrian was substituted in the 71st minute and waved to the West Ham fans, further fuelling rumours that his departure from the club is imminent. After the game, Pellegrini explained that he was replaced by Andy Carroll (£5.4m) because of the back pain felt against Birmingham City flaring up again.

“Marko felt the same pain in his back as he felt during the Cup so it was not good for him to take the risk to continue. He was part of the team and the complete team played well.” – Manuel Pellegrini

Playing loosely in the number 10 role behind Arnautovic was Nasri, making his full Premier League debut for West Ham. It was his first competitive fixture for over a year but he played well considering his absence from the game. Only two players registered more penalty box touches in the match than him, and it was his short pass to Rice which set up West Ham’s only goal. His inclusion in the starting XI was bad news for Robert Snodgrass (£5.4m) who dropped to the bench. Pellegrini was very pleased with Nasri’s performance and cited his versatility when discussing whether he would be a regular feature in the West Ham midfield.

“He was similar behind the striker, I don’t think that he is able to play in this moment on the wing or as a holding midfielder but sure in two or three games more he will be able to play in all the positions he did before. He played the right wing, left wing be near the position of Mark Noble, he doesn’t have any problem, he is a football player.” – Manuel Pellegrini

Not surprisingly, Nasri was unable to last the full match having managed only an hour in the FA Cup third round last week. He was substituted in the 70th minute, but Pellegrini remains unconcerned by his fitness.

“Yes, because Samir Nasri is a top player and when he has more minutes and his feet are 100 per cent he will make the difference as always he did in Arsenal and Manchester City. In that position it was very necessary for us to have those kind of players because the other three, Wilshere, Lanzini and Yarmolenko are injured, so Samir is improving and I am sure, because I trust a lot in his game, that he will continue to do so in the future.” – Manuel Pellegrini

Felipe Anderson (£7.4m) is now three matches in a row without attacking returns but showed some promise. He looked threatening every time West Ham bore down on Arsenal’s goal and touched the ball more times in the penalty box more times than any other player in the match.

West Ham United XI (4-2-3-1): Fabianski; Cresswell, Ogbonna, Diop, Zabaleta; Rice, Noble; Anderson, Nasri (Snodgrass 70′), Antonio (Obiang 81′); Arnautovic (Carroll 70′).

Arsenal XI (3-4-2-1): Leno; Koscielny, Sokratis, Mustafi (Ramsey 59′); Kolasinac, Xhaka (Torreira 59′), Guendouzi, Maitland-Niles (Bellerín 68′); Iwobi, Aubameyang; Lacazette.

Why? He’ll be the highest owned player and most captained for the rest of the season. He is immense. I like the differential route, however, going without Salah isn’t it as you’ll constantly be giving points to the field

I factor in entertainment more than most I think. Don't like the thought of captaining a player that every man and his dog will captain too. If I drop down the ranks then so be it.

This is quite a big factor too for me actually. I enjoy being the minority, not the majority and have had success doing that many times.

When I own and captain Salah it’s just meh when he scores. It’s like the human centipede.

Ha. I think I’m caving. I can finally do it without it costing me a -8.

It’s purely a protection thing and I won’t be captaining next week.

I stand by the fact that he’s getting lucky with all the pens. But seeing him actually get baps today it just has to be done as I can afford without affecting my team now.

Maybe I’m becoming a weak sheep.

Yeah I understand the logic and getting Salah is the smart thing to do. I just like to play a different game and I have my captains planned out over the next 4.

I think we both play the game pretty similar. Seeing as we both have sterling captain once again.

Looking for some balanced Salah discussion. A disclaimer: no, I don't have Salah, and yes, I'm doing pretty well this season so I have by no means been burned by not owning him.

So then, I'm still wondering to what extent he's 'essential' as long as I have other good captain choices. I have 2 FTs for next week so can get him for free, but I'm probably a lot more likely to get Sterling or Sane for that Huddersfield fixture. Also, even if I did have him, I'd still captain Kane vs. Fulham so I don't think buying him is worth it when we'll have City vs. Huddersfield.

I'm also surprised at not seeing much mention of how lucky he's been. Now, I haven't actually watched the games, so correct me if I'm wrong. But all I see is penalties recently (some of them quite soft, apparently), and not many shots or chances created other than that.

Any thoughts on how he's looked recently (i.e. post GW16 hat-trick) very welcome.

Don’t forget he won the penalty himself when he was hauled down in the box when about to score. So he scored and assisted the only goal, and was a whisker away from another.

      Good post.

I’ve gone for Sterling and have refused to sacrifice him to get Salah.

I still don’t think he’s essential and the run of penalties is insane luck. He’s getting steady scores, but hattrick aside one week doesn’t kill non owners. The consistency does chip away at us though.

I’m getting him now as I can afford him without sacrificing the team I want.

If I were you I’d get sterling first and then consider Salah after ?

Oh yeah, this is by no means a dilemma - definitely prioritising Sterling (or Sané) for next week above Salah. Need to sell Son so Son to Sterling/Sané and Lacazette to Rashford seems like a no-brainer.

Tentative plan would be to get sacrifice Hazard for Salah for GW26, i.e. after Chelsea have played Huddersfield.

It's more like a 'what am I missing' kind of post as I don't see the urgent need to get him immediately.

I think a lot of it is group mentality.

Obviously the majority own Salah and are very happy every penalty he scores and calls anyone who doesn’t have him an idiot.

Objectively however he’s missing big chances and scoring penalties and generally for limited baps. He’s definately not essential. I just think I’m so worn down from him now I’m just gonna jump on for a bit and consolidate.

He's only saying that it's possible to outscore Salah owners, which means it's possible to in the future (a very boring and obvious point, which people seemingly disagree with).

He's not saying that this has typically been the case so far, because it probably hasn't (as you are trying to prove). But what does that have to say about the future? Nothing, I would say.

He's saying that some Salah owners are doing badly.
But he hasn't given any examples of non-Salah owners who are doing better than the most successful Salah owners.

There are no non-Salah owners in the current top 50, which suggests that he has been pretty essential so far if you want to get to the top.
But whether that remains the case till the end of the season remains to be seen.

Of course it has been possible to outscore some Salah owners, but not the most successful ones.

Problem is even if he looked bad/dodgy still scoring points along the way. And being on penalties is great thing for him as he will be chasing personal records again this year.

After a few gw's he'll reach 50% + ownership & it'll be damage control rather than getting his points.
      Just a thought.

Nobody says you can't match Salah, the challenge is to pick the right mix of premium and mid-priced players each and every week....

You will not find the same number of points, plus a regular captaincy option in one player - so you have to make an educated guess each week who will "cover" Salah and if you get it wrong you free fall due to the 110% effective ownership....

I tried for 6 weeks off the back of the "he's a 13 million 8 point wonder" hype and promptly dropped 30K places because I got the Son/Sterling/Sané mix wrong.....

      Salah's back in my team.....

      1. Pierce34
        • 8 Years

I agree that if you were to just captain one player, Salah would be the choice. But my record so far this year suggests that I have (mostly) picked the right mix of premium and mid-priced players.

As I said, I'm not rigidly arguing to go without Salah - just think it's not worth to rush to buy him right now if I'm happy with my team and potential captains until GW26.

Yup, agree with you. It's risk/reward for sure, plus the ability to cover him.

But, with ownership going up, and assuming you are in the top half of the rankings, the impact of getting it wrong also increases.

The risk/reward equation is not acceptable anymore for me. Especially given the unprecedented unpredictable returns from the other "certainties"....

          Each to their own....

And that is far away from what has happened to many others. Many have dropped from top 20k top 200k etc. Double City was considered viable option once and when Sterling and Sane didn't deliver, it was very, rough for us.

So yes, Pierce has been lucky and been able to manage without him, but most others including me haven't. So I did get him in to be my C yesterday and consider the -4 worth it. Eye test and underlying stats tell me he's been unlucky not to get more points and Kane for example has been lucky to be as consistent as he has been.

So imo it's possibly only a question of time when he hauls and others don't. That also might not happen if his form drops and others improve. But if it does happen even the "clever" and lucky ones can't cover it.

My personal belief is there’s another/multiple 15 plus gw just around the corner.

Penalties have seen him through ok so far but feel he’ll get it right from open play soon.

Bar Richarlison he is also the only out and out forward classed as a mid...who also happens to be playing for one of the best 2 teams in the league....and he’s a guaranteed starter.

You’ve done very well without him to date but my feeling is probability says you’ll lose ground if you don’t get him in now.

Players above 11m are never essential if you have good captaincy options. They simply don't return enough points for their price.

You're fine without him if you have Kane or decent city options.

The way I look at Salah:

      - Midfielder playing OOP
      - Guaranteed starter
      - Captainable most weeks
      - Highly owned
      - Plays for a team that will be top 2 in the league
      - High goal involvement when Pool scores
      - Can score hat tricks

My rank has fallen off a cliff since I got rid of him, despite Kane & Auba doing the business in that period. Tells me that his ownership and captaincy is so high that the kind of returns he's consistently getting will always hurt non-owners.

If you dont feel that the 2 millions in price difference between his price and Haz or Sterling prices are justfied well i would go for Fraser or Wilson instead of Hazard or Sterling and upgrade rest of my team? But then upgrade to who?
You have a budget to use, it is how you can use it to get the best assets you can in the correct time, The only 2 players i have from GW1 are Salah and Robbo, couldn't find this consistency in any other players, city assets are good but too much rotation an d even if they are scoring big too many players involved in the score, Salah highest scorer in FPL = highest price, you want this points you pay for them and have to be a good manager to choose the best assets to get with the rest of your funds.
Being too stubborn to react is your responsibility but talking about players being lucky will get you nowhere

I got lucky with my timing of owning Salah this season until the last time I took him out and I've had about 7 bad captains in 8 weeks and the difference of 10-20 points has been the difference between top 10k and just outside top 100k where I am now. I've dropped Alonso to fund Salah and just going to stick with him.

Salah accumulated points last season. Watford game aside it really was just a consistent stream of pts..
      Doing same now. Kane similar.
Likes of Sterling, hazard, Kun may get bigger individual GWs but Salah is still on to accumulate a big season score. For those protecting rank he's golden. For those chasing he's just going to hold your rank. His goal yesterday (with captaincy) moved my rank from72k to 69k at the time.
Had him all last season and towards the end of season his points were not improving my high rank at all.

He's the closest player to essential status currently:

Currently has 162pts...looks set to rival last year's 300+pts haul. There's not much suggesting his output will fall away in the 2nd half of the season, especially with Liverpool in the title race.

He's consistent...only Kane is matching him for consistency currently. This makes him the #1 captain choice most weeks. I for one am getting pretty tired of captaining inconsistent flakes like Hazard, Sterling, etc.

The fixtures are really quite nice until the end of the season. I'm 90% sure he'll be my set-n-forget captaincy choice from now on.

Lets face it, everyone around you in FPL and your MLs will be getting him and captaining him most weeks...just do yourself a favour and get him 🙂

for me, salah being on pens makes him even more appealing.
why we like premium assets like haz, kun, kane etc as they also take pens. we dont hear people say they get soft pens, we take them as we own the players.
lot of good advice is given on here regarding the extra appeal of players who have set pieces as an added bonus
think salah has scored the same amount of pens so far as haz and kane.still on more points
had him from the start, will keep, i understand how people want to spread the cash though.
like most i have had captaincy wrong, cap kane for his late cameo when salah got his hatrick, at least i still got his points,as that would of been more hurtful.
i like the articles/debates for having such premium players, which to have, who to cap etc, its all about opinions, and who gets it right.
good luck to all whichever players you have, just a pity we cant have them all, its what makes fpl so interesting and frustrating for us all

Probably the most pointless discussion in the world. We’ve all made an extra 4m+ team value so no excuse to baulk at his asking price.

This was the same poop I was spouting when Ronaldo was in the PL. You can match or surpass the points of 14m + 5m with 9.5m + 9.5m, but when you factor in the double captain points and reliably picking the best alternative captain, it all falls apart.

Your logic would make sense if we'd made an extra 15m+ in selling value, but not 4m+ in team value. Luckily for the sake of the game, we still have to make choices about which combinations of players will score more points.

I think the best part about him, the reason why I got him is with him you don't have to think much about captaincy & he's an absolute flat track bully, against such teams, Brighton palace, he'll get you 8-10 points, but I've been getting the captain wrong for a while, so can do with a permanent stable captain option

Don’t think you can over value the importance of a consistent captain. Whether it be 5 points or 15.
I’ve had too many captain blanks and it’s one of the main reasons I’m having a rubbish season.
      Glad to have him back.

He's not essential. A premium has to do really well and other premiums have to do really poorly to justify that term.

He's a great guy to have because you'll have a good captaincyoption almost every single week. He also offers the comfortability of somewhat "negating" captaincy by captaining him. With his form hes prob gonna bei in the 50%s each week going forward.

Not owning him requires hitting the captaincy and stomaching it when you miss and your premiums dont deliver as consistent as he does.

But yeah, in theory there's very few reasons to conclude that one has to build the team around him.

The "luck" thing is one that i dont put much stock in. He's next in line after millie, so very pen lfc draw will go to salah when millie doesnt play. Some players are good at drawing pens. Zaha is one, Salah is another.

Things have a way to even out. From underperforming based on chances early parts of the season, he's now overperforming. Prob gonna be another "rut" and another "hotstreak" before season ends

Interested as to why so many are advocating dropping Hazard to fund Salah but keeping Auba instead?

Reasons I’ve seen have included that his head is already in Madrid, etc, but the way I see it he has better fixture short-medium term than Auba (arguably), and if/when they get a new striker this month it’ll surely help him a lot. Auba on the other hand has good stats, but returns have dried up somewhat recently compared to start of the season, with some hauls being kinda jammy (think last week - yes I captained him then too). Arsenal were so woeful they weren’t able to even get a goal past a weakened West Ham defence that conceded 2 to Burnley, Brighton, Watford... and ARS really lacking in the midfield department to supply him.

    Thoughts? Missed anything?

Who to ditch Alonso or Hazard?

If i ditch Hazzo i can buy 9.1 mid and i dont see any options...

Might be a bit of a "I shouldn't complain" but have had some really rotten captain luck. Somehow have kept my rank still over these six weeks, have had the right players (minus Salah over festive) but wrong captain since getting it right on Sterling vs WHU. Captains since would be:

    GW17: Kane 5pt (Sane 10pt)
    GW18: Sterling 2pt (Kane 15pt/Son 21pt)
    GW19: Kane 6pt (Son 13pt)
    GW20: Son 5pt (Pogba 18pt)
    GW21: Hazard 3pt (Auba 9pt/Son 13pt/Kane 12pt)
    GW22: Hazard 5pt (Salah 11pt)

Man just need to get it right one week and captain the person who gets the double figures and I could actually get a top1k finish this season

To add to the Salah discussion - I suppose I would be rushing to buy him if Liverpool were firing on all cylinders and scoring 3-4 goals per game - as it is, it looks like a better balanced team can survive without him, provided that there are decent captain choices (which is the case with Kane and City options over the next few weeks).

Don't think it's that special to be honest, but I don't want to sacrifice Hazard or any of the mid-priced ones yet.

            Fabianski - Steele
            Robertson - Doherty - Kolasinac - AWB - Chambers
Hazard - Son - Pogba - Felipe Anderson - Richarlison
            Kane - Lacazette - Quaner

Had Rashford but sold him for Lacazette for the past two weeks in a failed punt.

Doing Lacazette to Rashford and Son to Sterling/Sané with my 2FTs this week.

      Was it an English pub?

You know like that rare thing with a pool table and a dart board and white powder on the cistern.

I didn't notice sawdust on the floor.

Must of been a Wine Bar. Terrible Shame.

I can't thank Auba enough for that blank as I eyed a move for him.

Bring in Kane(C) for this round against Fulham is a no brainer right ?

My only concern is if Moura plays and gets all up in Harry’s way again, like earlier in the season.

I have no concern if Moura plays. It is Fulham. 2 own goals against Burnley out of fear. Kane in craven cottage would claim them all 😉

            Hi guys

Wildcard activated with the below team currently. Any obvious problems or recommendations to improve it? £0.0 ITB.

Still considering Hazard and TAA > Sterling and Shaw (or other 4.9 or less defender).

            Fabianski / McCarthy

            Robertson / TAA / Doherty / Digne / AWB

            Salah / Hazard / Pogba / Richarlison / Puncheon

            Kane / Rashford / Jimenez

GKs might be a place to improve.

              Perfect defense IMO.
              Not sure about McCarthy though.
              I like this team.

I’d be tempted to downgrade Digne to Bednarek and upgrade elsewhere actually.

What upgrade you can achieve with 1.2m ??
I think Digne till gw 26 & switch to Periera gw27 is looking nice.

Not sure.. McCarthy to Guita, Pogba to Sane, Hazard to Sterling, Rich to Anderson, Jimi to Arnie..

I like it, Jimenez doesn’t quite score enough, but I’ll probably have to get him myself if Arnie leaves. I’d rather get rid of Digne than TAA if you need more money.

Not sure you need AWB with that defense. Just get Bednarek and upgrade McCarthy to Guaita for whenever you want Palace cover.

And Fabianski to Etheridge, rotates better with Guaita.

Guaita was definitely going in until he came off injured yesterday ( costing me 9 fabianski bench points!).

That's just bad luck. Bednarek + Guaita give you the same team combo for 0.5 less.

Maybe McCarthy, Digne and Pogba > Button, Bednarek and Sane??

            C) F. Anderson, Auba, Snodgrass -> Salah, Jiminez, Puncheon (-4)

I think that’s one to keep an eye on. I’m not confident Pogba will prove to be a season keeper yet, nor that Sane will be nailed once Mendy is back.

I wouldn't lose Pogba to facilitate it, especially for a hit.
