The recent injury to Tottenham’s main man Harry Kane has reduced the Gameweek 23 captaincy debate to a one-sided affair.

Liverpool star Mohamed Salah appears the favourite ahead of this weekend’s deadline but it is still worth digging deeper.

In this latest Captain Sensible article, we analyse how each Fantasy Premier League asset has performed for underlying statistics for the last four Gameweeks, also examining the team they play for and the side they are facing…

Captain Poll

Mohamed Salah (13.4m) has completely and utterly dominated the Gameweek 23 captain poll, looking set for the biggest winning margin of the season.

The Egyptian has so far managed to garner support from 64% of voters, at the current time of writing.

Those that have plumped for him as the best option will obviously be looking at his form over the last seven Gameweeks, which has seen him score a total of 72 points.

Liverpool host Crystal Palace this week in a fixture that gives Jurgen Klopp’s men a strong chance of three points.

Likely because of Harry Kane‘s (£12.5m) recent injury, which will see him out until March, our voters don’t really see a viable alternative to Salah.

That is clearly shown by the fact that currently second in our poll is Paul Pogba (£8.5m) with just over a 6% share.

The Manchester United man could certainly prove a handy differential skipper in Gameweek 23. He has produced an attacking return in all but one league match since Ole Gunnar Solskjaer took over at Old Trafford, and this week the Red Devils host Brighton.

Marcus Rashford (£7.5m) is also receiving similar attention, convincing 4.5% of our voters to suggest he is the best captain this weekend.

The England international has in four of the last five matches, and has assisted twice more. On current form, he seems to have held off competition from Romelu Lukaku (£10.7m) and seems to be the most popular replacement for Kane among the FPL community.

Interestingly, Sergio Aguero (£11.2m) is considered the most popular captain option from Manchester City, despite the form of Gabriel Jesus (£10.1m).

He has 3.8% backing in the poll, keeping him ahead of Leroy Sané (£9.6m) on 2.4% and Raheem Sterling (£11.3m) on 1.8%.

Hey mate, I should be! Am feeling a bit guilty at slapping my WC out on the table this week, but I played it around the same time last year and negotiated the DGW's pretty well.

        Team is looking like:

        Patricio
        Lindelof - VVD - Digne
        Salah - Sterling - Hazard - Pogba - Sané
        Rashford - Llorente

        Button - Long - Bednarek - AWB

Patricio on WC is a bit ambitious? Llorente is bold but what a nice mid you have, bloody 'ell!

Not sure about Pat but Wolves' fixtures turn nice now, and it'll be sods law that I sell him and they start getting clean sheets.

I guess the alternative is Fabs or Etheridge, but I think I prefer Pat to those two. Can't afford Allison ofcourse - I know you've prioritised the Liverpool defensive triple up! Hope I don't jinx them for you with my VVD pick.

Haha, yeah, going from no LIV to triple LIV defence sums me up but it's a gamble and if it pays off over the next four could be genius but also could end up a complete disaster! Fun of FPL eh 🙂

                That's what it's all about 🙂

Maybe downgrade on of them for TAA or Gomez once they return so you have more funds on the attacking side of things. That said, still loads of value in budget forwards and mid picks. Good luck!

around 105m, and genuinely haven't been chasing value despite taking a lot of hits. Only brought VVD and Pogba in this week, for example.

Shane Long and Bednarek help massively, and should be good bench fodder.

Nice. I think your hits have probably helped you gain value a little bit, perhaps inadvertently.

First time I tried to chase value all season and TAA got injured, which then means I activated my WC with a fairly average SV.

                  Ah well.

Ha, did the exact same thing! Brought in TAA on Monday night, I think it was, which would leave me exact funds to do Calvert-Lewin to Aguero, but then his knee injury was announced on Tuesday.

Didn't want to take a -8 so hit the WC to give me Sterling, VVD, and Llorente mainly. Ings our for Long generated a useful 0.8m. And now have triple Man U.

Don't let that colour your wildcard choices.

If you don't have a Liverpool defender then I think VVD is a better pick than Allison, but can't see the rest of your WC team.

It's not my style but I can't argue with that at all. Really solid picks, and much like the template at the moment.

Personally, I'd prefer Sterling, Sané or KdB over Aubameyang vs Huddersfield and have a punt on Llorente vs Fulham, but I accept that's risky.

Neither, personally, but can't go wrong with either.

The double up with Liverpool defence might be better with TAA or Gomez around 5m, than with Alison.

I'd think about saving, then looking next week at Kamara -> Auba funded by a downgrade of whichever of Anderson / Richarlison you'd prefer to bin.

If that works, money-wise. Auba could go berserk against Cardiff.

Nah. I had him last 22 GW's, but I don't think Chelseas fixtures and form justify his price. Don't get this wrong - Hazard is a freakin' god, and what a player. But he does the same as Firmino - run deep down to get involved with the ball. I think Chelsea spend too much time controlling the game and too less time creating big chances and setting Hazard up for a goal. I like Citys fixtures and think they are more direct than Chelsea. Sterling < Hazard for me.

Think Spurs backs are too risky, no Pool defense is suicide. I don't think Firmino has done anything to justify being bought > Mané. I think Everton has looked shaky AF lately (I have owned DIgne and Richarlison and played both last couple of weeks). Getting rid.

Thanks for the feedback. I've had at least one Liverpool defender all season but just can't afford Robertson or VVD at the moment. Digne is basically holding the position until Gomez or TAA are back. Firmino is admittedly a bit of a quick decision. Upgraded Hazard to Salah and had surplus of cash after selling Kane.

Alli, pushed up top, raises his game in Kane's absence, on pens...
Really have a feeling he's going to be a massive fail and the deeper lying Eriksen is actually the shrewder pick!
Or maybe this wildcard has really gone to my head 😉

They're still better than the dross sides they've got coming up and should score goals regardless I think. Quite fancy Alli to step up personally. But maybe they will just be rubbish who knows

    Have 2 options for Kane:

    A) Take a punt on cheap striker like King/Niasse and get Aubameyang for Kamara next week

    B) Kane to Aubameyang straight away, sit back and relax

Was pretty sure of going with A but with WIlson back in picture, King is probably not worth a punt.

Shaqiri. Imo will start the next few as Klopp will roll out the 4231 in these winnable fixtures.
Has the eye to pick out great passes for assists. Not afraid to shoot. Has a wicked direct free kick left foot.
Brilliant price. Criminally overlooked as ppl n here seem obsessed with double LFC defence instead of double LFC attack.

I’ve been doing some research (too detailed to share) and have concluded that say Felipe, Richarlison, Fraser, Doherty, Jonny and Alonso will all haul massively.

Robbo & Salah will do well again, and Pogba & Rashford will fill their boots v Brighton.

Also Ederson will probably keep a CS & save a pen v Huddersfield.

Wilson & Ings may also do well but fitness doubts over both.

Last week was a question if you recall correctly 🙂

And the answer was dangerously close to being “yes” - controversial pen away from blanking, first game this season where he’s managed max bones with one return, Brighton maintaining their solid defensive form only conceding one at home etc etc

If you want credibility, you’re on the wrong site though!

you running down any decision to cap Salah was certainly not a question. pleased to say the rubbish you were spewing wasn't getting digested. Pen or no pen, salah returned and the scaremonger rant was bollocks!

lol it's an interesting interpretation - in truth, difficult (but valid) questions were asked about whether it was a good idea considering his schedule, brighton's home defensive record, liverpool's injuries, and how they would react to losing to city in the league & wolves in the FA cup - some folks hate tough questions, but its important we don't shy away from them

Anyone who asked 'should i captain salah' was told 'make your own informed decision', as you always should 😉

WHUFC fan here... cue the jokes about Arnautovic "breaking out" of the starting lineup in a different sort of way with all the transfer rumors and head games. I do hope he stays in East London and plays well given his talents but we'll see.

In terms of breakouts that will score big, I think that Arnie's being dropped from the travel squad this week opens the door to Felipe Anderson's chances of being our guy and getting a big haul against a variable Bournemouth defense.

More comments coming out of West Ham suggesting Arnautovic will be leaving.

Pellegrini "So they are not forcing me to sell Marko Arnautovic. But I think as a manager the best thing is to take the solution that is best for the player and the club, both together.

"If they agree, we don't have any problem to change.
