The recent injury to Tottenham’s main man Harry Kane has reduced the Gameweek 23 captaincy debate to a one-sided affair.

Liverpool star Mohamed Salah appears the favourite ahead of this weekend’s deadline but it is still worth digging deeper.

In this latest Captain Sensible article, we analyse how each Fantasy Premier League asset has performed for underlying statistics for the last four Gameweeks, also examining the team they play for and the side they are facing…

Captain Poll

Mohamed Salah (13.4m) has completely and utterly dominated the Gameweek 23 captain poll, looking set for the biggest winning margin of the season.

The Egyptian has so far managed to garner support from 64% of voters, at the current time of writing.

Those that have plumped for him as the best option will obviously be looking at his form over the last seven Gameweeks, which has seen him score a total of 72 points.

Liverpool host Crystal Palace this week in a fixture that gives Jurgen Klopp’s men a strong chance of three points.

Likely because of Harry Kane‘s (£12.5m) recent injury, which will see him out until March, our voters don’t really see a viable alternative to Salah.

That is clearly shown by the fact that currently second in our poll is Paul Pogba (£8.5m) with just over a 6% share.

The Manchester United man could certainly prove a handy differential skipper in Gameweek 23. He has produced an attacking return in all but one league match since Ole Gunnar Solskjaer took over at Old Trafford, and this week the Red Devils host Brighton.

Marcus Rashford (£7.5m) is also receiving similar attention, convincing 4.5% of our voters to suggest he is the best captain this weekend.

The England international has in four of the last five matches, and has assisted twice more. On current form, he seems to have held off competition from Romelu Lukaku (£10.7m) and seems to be the most popular replacement for Kane among the FPL community.

Interestingly, Sergio Aguero (£11.2m) is considered the most popular captain option from Manchester City, despite the form of Gabriel Jesus (£10.1m).

He has 3.8% backing in the poll, keeping him ahead of Leroy Sané (£9.6m) on 2.4% and Raheem Sterling (£11.3m) on 1.8%.

    2 FT, £0.0 ITB, OR 6,859

    Patricio
    Doherty / Digne / Robertson
    Salah / Hazard / Sterling / Richarlison / Pogba
    Jimenez / Arnautovic

    Speroni / David Luiz / Wan-Bissaka / Kamara

Assuming that Arnautovic will go nowhere, do we really think that Rashford (already Man Utd cover with Pogba) will score more points in the next GWs than him?

If yes is David Luiz + Arnautovic -> Bednarek + Rashford the best way to fund it?

Would release a lot of money maybe for a Spurs mid for Richarlison in the next few GWs and i could always play Robertson and rotate Digne, Doherty and Wan-Bissaka according to the fixtures.

    Cheers.

100% Rash will outscore him. I also cannot see him staying there. Those look like good moves. Once you've changed to Spurs we will have an almost identical squad. I've got Sane instead of Sterling though and Eriksen instead of Rich

        Thanks for the feedback.

Rashford is OGS golden boy, but always have on the back of my mind that Rashford could be a transfer waiting to happen with Lukaku on the bench or that i've missed his points (similar to Lingard last year). And maybe if Lukaku starts having some more game time, Rashford won't be such good value at RW.

Barring an injury I just can't see Lukaku getting many starting minutes. He looks so slow and cumbersome and our attacking play has all been based on quick attacks and running at defenders. Even if he is moved to left or right wing with 20 minutes to go he still has points potential.

I think you're assuming the wrong way, all comments coming out of West Ham suggest it's just a matter of time until he goes to China.

Don't like Firminio myself. Was put off Kun for my team due to Jesus form and I don't think he's as nailed, particularly with a couple of cup games in between prem and then the blank week. Martial and Rich could both score decent points this week so wouldn't look to take them out for a hit. I have taken them out my own team but did so on a wildcard

HUD have been conceding twice as many chances from their right flank vs their left flank over the last four.

Sane + Jesus are the ones to capitalize this week.

Torn really. I was all set on sterling captain and now I have Salah feel like maybe I have to captain him to justify his stupid price.

Might have to plump for Salah captain despite thinking in a vacuum sterling is the better option especially with Salah potentially losing penalties.

      Flapjack don’t do it

I know. I’ve captained sterling so much recently and he hasn’t blanked for me.

Just because I have Salah now and wanting him to blank seems so negative

I will have to suck it up and show balls again I guess

          Do it mate

          I’m buzzing from my hazard > sterling (-4) gw11

Haz got 4 and sterling got me 42 as captain

Even then everyone was telling me no way don’t do it and all this shiet.

        Sterling 100%.

I had both two weeks ago and it’s cost me points but I genuinely think sterling has been unlucky and going forward I think he’s definately worth the extra!

Players like Bedarnerk and AWB make Sterling very obtainable imo 🙂

There is big upside to captaining him and I also have a decision to make, and convincing myself to go through with it is the toughest part. Salah is the safe and being honest, the straight forward choice.

Playing on the Sunday makes it the tough call. Even if Salah hauls, sterling still to play can match it. Salah blanks and sitting with Sterling captain is a nice position to be in.

    Play 1 of these...

    Bamba v Newcastle (A)
    Jimenez v Leicester (H)
    AWB v Liverpool (A)

Most of you will say Jimenez but can't help feeling Newcastle v Cardiff will be 0-0 or 0-1 with a header from Bamba.

Imo he won't start. He's sulking, he wants out to spurs or Chelsea. Well the Chelsea move won't happen now. I think it's a moody injury personally.

      Actually yes but not conclusive:

"Wilson resumed light training earlier this week and was expected to have another session today before Howe finalises his squad for the visit of the Hammers (3pm).

Asked for an update on Wilson’s fitness at his pre-match press conference this morning, Howe said: “He’s been on the grass once this week and we will make a very late call on him.”

And asked whether Wilson may be fit enough to start or be named on the bench, Howe replied: “It’s difficult to know because we still have a training session today. You have to be very careful with hamstring injuries.”

          Not great no.
They value him so much that they won’t risk anything that will injure him again.
My gut feel is he starts on the bench and has a run out

Just can't decide whether to give Mitrovic one more week, given he's firmly at the top of goals imminent. However, I've already lost 0.1 on him and fear he may drop again. Blow some Kane money on Firmino? Or get Aguero for some City cover? Don't really want to take the money out of the front line.

Already on -4 before the Kane injury. Should i just wait till next week now? As i can play Digne/Doherty instead? Would prob get Firmimo and it would be a -8.

Have one more drop in Kane before i start losing money. Bought for 12.4 he's currently 12.5.
