Captains

Captain Sensible – Salah the favourite for Gameweek 24

Mohamed Salah (£13.6m) looks to be the main captain candidate considered for Gameweek 24.

However, we wouldn’t be doing our jobs properly if we didn’t assess any potential alternatives to the Egyptian for the upcoming midweek Fantasy Premier League action.

In this latest Captain Sensible article, we’ll be analysing each player in the debate, as well as the prospects of their club and their opposition…

Captain Poll

Not surprisingly, Salah leads the captain poll for a second week running ahead of Leicester’s trip to Anfield. The 45% support for the Egyptian comes from two places, the key one being his form, with six double-figure hauls in his last eight matches. The fact that the Foxes’ out-of-sorts defence shipped four goals at Wolves in Gameweek 23 is also likely to be a huge contributing factor.

Salah’s lead is not quite as large as it was for the last round of FPL action, as Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£11.3m) sits in second place with a 20% share. The Arsenal man does present a compelling alternative to the Liverpool man as Cardiff come to the Emirates Stadium with the second-worst record on the road in the Premier League. In three away matches against top-six opposition this season, the Bluebirds have zero points with an aggregate score of 9-2. They look the perfect opponents for Aubameyang to continue his excellent home form, with goal involvements in four of his last five league matches at the Emirates.

Our voters may have cottoned onto the fact that Burnley are slowly making improvements, and are starting to represent tougher opposition than they did earlier in the campaign. Manchester United pair Paul Pogba (£8.7m) and Marcus Rashford (£7.7m) sit third and fourth in the poll but with just 7% and 5% shares respectively, despite their blistering recent form. The two players have scored 108 FPL points between them since Ole Gunnar Solskjaer took over at Old Trafford.

At 3% backing in fifth place, Alexandre Lacazette (£9.3m) looks like he’s being considered by some as an alternative to Aubameyang with Cardiff coming to north London.

Despite a little uncertainty over his likeliness of starts, Sergio Aguero (£11.3m) is the most popular Manchester City player in the Gameweek 24 captain poll, with 2.5% of the votes ahead of a trip to Newcastle. That may be because of his excellent scoring record against the Magpies, finding the net nine times in his last five Premier League matches against them.

The Argentinian forward sits ahead of Leroy Sané (£9.7m) and Raheem Sterling (£11.3m) who are on 2.12% and 1.37% respectively. Neither one of them got any minutes against Burton Albion or Burnley so they look the most likely to start at St James’ Park.

Sandwiched among the Manchester City assets is Eden Hazard (£11.0m), who has a 2.37% share of the votes. That’s ahead of a trip to Bournemouth, who have averaged 1.42 goal conceded per home match in 2018/19. The Belgian’s brand new strike partner Gonzalo Higuain (£9.5m) has entered the debate too with 1.31%, just a little ahead of Diogo Jota (£6.0m) on 1.25%.

Optimal City coverage for GW25 in my opinion is Ederson Sterling Sane. Any suggestions how I get Ederson in for 25? Im banking the FT this week, 0 ITB:

    Fabianksi

    Robertson Doherty Digne

    Salah Sterling Sane Hazard Pogba

    Jimenez Rashford

Subs: Hamer Wan Bissaka Bednerak Kamara

Assuming your midfield, Rashford & Robertson are untouchable, I'd say these are your options to free up move from Fabianski to Ederson:

      Doherty to Jonny
      Jimenez to Ings

Potentially. I want to keep Fabianksi to cover 27 and 31 though. All I can see is Hazard - Son, Hamer - Ederson. Ditching Hazard before Hudd home seems bumb though...

I think Ederson and sterling are essential then you have to choose between Laporte and Sane for the other option. That can be team dependant depending on the easiest move imo.

For the DGW? For me ? Yes I believe so. You cover the safest attacking route and the safest defensive route into Man City.

I’ll have neither and think I’ll be fine. Not sure I’d agree with sterling being safest attacker...never trust pep. Unless you have Ederson already I see little value in transferring him in and more than likely having to transfer him out again in a couple of gws

I reckon Ederson and Laporte are the only players who are nailed to play both matches. Sane and Sterling could well get both games because they were given the break, but you never know. The good thing is City need to win every game now so they will most likely play their best team as often as possible.

People are also forgetting it's 3 games in a week for city, anyone who starts this mid week surely won't start the weekend and next Wednesday (except ederson)

Peps had a big disaster at Goodison Park so won't take them lightly away. The players are capable of playing 3 games in a week. Now also what should be a soft touch in the cup means they can play best XI in each league game

Agree completely. The only worry for Sane owners is the return of Mendy who might start one of the games, and we know Pep thinks he can cover Sane with Mendy's drives up the left wing.

For my compatriots in Ireland that want to watch the FA Cup draw live on your Sky box you will have to manually tune in BBC 1 as the draw is not on BBC NI which is the default BBC channel on the Sky box at the moment.

Here are the settings you will need to manually tune in BBC 1......

    Astra 2E, Frequency 10847
    Polarisation: Vertical
    Mode: DVB-S2, 8PSK
    Symbol Rate: 23000 (23.0 Mbaud)

Really? If Wolves, Palace, City, Chelsea, Watford and Brighton make it through, the blanks will be:

        Man United vs Man City
        Everton vs Chelsea
        Tottenham vs Crystal Palace
        Wolves vs Arsenal

When you're really good, it's amazing how many easy fixtures you get.

I don’t understand what your point is. Doesn’t matter how good they are they’ve still got a bunch of easy draws.

Hopefully Wolves, Chelsea, Watford and Brighton go out.

So for each one of the below that go out we get another GW31 fixture, to add to the 4 already confirmed...

      - Chelsea (home utd - chelsea probably will go through) Blank #2
      - Palace (away doncaster... you'd have to think they go through) Blank #3
      - Wolves (need to beat shrewsbury home, then bristol city away - going out on a limb & saying wolves go out) Fixture #5
      - Watford (need to beat Pompey or QPR away... think Watford will go out here) Fixture #6
      - Brighton (need to beat west brom, then Derby - think they'll go out) Fixture #7

So i reckon the 3 GW31 blanks will be

      - Utd/City (3-5 players missing for most folks)
      - Chelsea/Everton (2-3 players missing for most)
      - Spurs/Palace (1-2 players missing for most)

So on average people will probably be missing 6-7 squad members... not too bad considering you can bring 4 in off the bench straight away - looks like a fair old chance of no chip being needed for GW31 which keeps the plan intact:

      - BGW31 - 90% chance of 5 or more fixtures (no chip needed?)
      - DGW32 - FH for DGW
      - BGW33 - minimum 6 fixtures guaranteed (no chip needed?)
      - GW34 - WC targeting DGW35 players
      - DGW35 - BB for DGW

Just leaves triple captain... which is surely a choice between Man City GW25 or waiting for another double, or possibly Salah in a single GW36 home to relegated Huddersfieldif Liverpool are going for the league and need the goal difference. Home to Wolves GW38 possibly another option...

TLDR: Here is the above in pictorial format

    Stick or Twist??
    1 FT 1.6 ITB

    Fab - Button
    Robertson-Luiz-Doherty-Wan B- Stankovic
    Salah-Sane-Pogba-FAnderson-Stephens
    Aub-Rash-Jim

Thinking either Fab > Ederson or FAnderson > Richarlison to prep for the DGW...but I feel FAnderson could score as many as Rich this week so saving for next GW is my thinking now...

    Fab, 4.0
    Robertson, Luiz, Digne, AWB, Jonny
    Salah, Pogba, Richarlison,FAnderson,4.5
    Rashford, Aubameyang, Jimenez

    1FT.

    Appreciate thoughts

    A) Rich -> Sane
    B) FAnderson -> Sane
    C) Hold FT and get 2 City in next week (rationale for this is Rich has DGW 25 and FAnderson has a prime fixture this week.
    D) Something else?
