Man City assets falter in Double Gameweek audition

Manchester City players largely faltered in their audition for Double Gameweek 25 as they were defeated 2-1 by Newcastle.

It was a game in which the defending champions struggled to fashion many clear cut opportunities and after labouring they were stunned by their spirited hosts.

How their key options fared at St James Park, ahead of a crucial double set of Fantasy Premier League matches next time around, is the focus of this latest Scout Notes article.

Newcastle 2-1 Manchester City

Goals: Salomón Rondón (£5.7m), Matt Ritchie (£5.8m) | Sergio Aguero (£11.3m)

Assists: Isaac Hayden (£4.3m), Sean Longstaff (£4.5m) | David Silva (£8.5m)

Sergio Aguero (£11.3m) was perhaps the only Manchester City option to come off well ahead of Double Gameweek 25, as he scored in the 2-1 defeat to Newcastle. Not only did he find the net in the opening exchanges, but he was also the only player in the match to register more than one shot on target. The Argentinian had three efforts in the penalty area, matched only by David Silva (£8.5m), and collected maximum bonus points.

Meanwhile, Raheem Sterling (£11.3m) was incredibly underwhelming, not registering a single shot in the entire match. Typically very active in the opposition penalty area, he managed just three touches of the ball in that area of the pitch. The fact that he played 90 minutes at St James’ Park and is always under threat of rotation, options such as Bernardo Silva (£7.6m) or Riyad Mahrez (£8.3m) waiting in the wings, could reduce his appeal ahead of the Double Gameweek. Aguero’s 90-minute display may also count against him too when managers are recruiting in the next few days, as Gabriel Jesus (£10.1m) played just 17 minutes.

“It was not our best night. We lost second balls, we were not aggressive enough, that’s why we could not win.” – Pep Guardiola

It was a mixed evening for owners of Leroy Sané (£9.7m) who were would have been happy to see the German in the starting XI once again. He has now featured from the beginning in 11 of Manchester City’s last 12 Premier League matches. However, Sané’s blank was the first time he failed to be involved in a goal since Gameweek 20 when he featured only as a late substitute. The silver lining on the Gameweek 24 two-pointer was the fact that Sané was withdrawn in the 72nd minute which would suggest he is being prepped to start at least the first match of Double Gameweek 25.

Benjamin Mendy (£6.1m) was, again, not named in the matchday squad as he continues to struggle with his comeback from injury. Pep Guardiola insisted he was much better ahead of Gameweek 24, but preferred instead to leave him out. That means we will likely have to wait until his pre-match press conference on Friday before assessing his chances of being involved in Double Gameweek 25 and factored into the team selection picture.

The aforementioned Silva was a rare bright spark in Manchester City’s midfield, appearing the only one to have the aggressiveness about his game that Guardiola explained his team was missing in the encounter. He inadvertently provided the assist for Aguero’s opener and could have had a goal of his own later in the first half had he put more power on a close-range header.

Kevin de Bruyne (£9.7m) started for the second time in a row and was level with Silva for chances created in the game. However, as tempers boiled in the second half he was withdrawn by Guardiola. That might mean he is a little fresher to play a decent role in the Double Gameweeks. Bernardo Silva (£7.6m) played just 25 minutes and seems assured of a place in at least the Arsenal match, while de Bruyne may have the advantage over David Silva on account of the latter’s 90-minute outing at Newcastle.

The defeat was indicative of the underlying problems within Manchester City’s defence this season. They came into Gameweek 24 with the best goal attempts conceded in the box total over the previous four matches, and yet still conceded twice from the three efforts Newcastle mustered there on Tuesday night. A number of teams have scored on Guardiola’s men with their first attacks of matches in 2018/19, and Newcastle continued that trend by making the most of the few opportunities that came their way.

“They shot twice. The first was the goal and the second was the penalty. We had the chances but when that happens, everything is open. Congratulations to Newcastle for the victory.” – Pep Guardiola

With that in mind, Manchester City defensive options look even less attractive for the Double Gameweek now. Ederson (£5.6m) and Aymeric Laporte (£6.1m) were the only two real candidates for inclusion considering Guardiola’s rotation policy, but their prices do not offer much value. Neither of them can offer much goal threat on top of their poor clean sheet potential, with Arsenal and Everton their opponents. The Gunners have averaged two goals per away match this season while the Toffees have netted in four of their last five played at Goodison Park.n four of their last five played

Rafa Benitez once again demonstrated his importance to Newcastle as he orchestrated a sensational victory for his side. Many other sides would have panicked after conceding in the 25th second of the match against Manchester City and been picked apart for the rest of the encounter, but the former Liverpool boss kept his players calm and collected. Rather than send them charging up the pitch to get back into the game, Benitez’s men kept it tight, absorbed City’s pressure and did their damage in the second half once they had some wind in their sails.

“It was a great effort from everyone and to win against a team as good as Manchester City. They have everything. They are so good so when you get three points against them you know the players have done really well. Everyone was fighting for each other. We had a couple of situations where they were dangerous on the counter-attack but on the whole we defended well. The game plan was not to concede in the first minute but we reacted very well. We changed things at half-time and we were good enough to score two goals.” – Rafa Benitez

Fabian Schär (£4.6m) demonstrated his credentials once again, but for a different reason than his two-goal performance against Cardiff. Rather than impressing going forward, this time the Swiss international was a rock at the back, topping the Clearances, Blocks and Interceptions (CBI) tally for the match with nine.

Salomón Rondón (£5.7m) was the man to get Newcastle back in the game, and now has attacking returns in his last two home matches. He assisted against Cardiff before netting on Tuesday night. However, his crucial goal against Manchester City came from just one effort in the whole game, suggesting he remains a budget asset to avoid for now. That particular statistic further proves how fragile City’s defence is though, very little required from opposition to break through it.

Matt Ritchie (£5.8m) was officially Newcastle’s most dangerous player on the night with his two efforts on goal, although one of those was his second-half penalty. The Scottish international further staked his claim on spot-kicks by dispatching the winning goal after Sean Longstaff (£4.5m) was fouled in the area.

Newcastle United XI (5-4-1): Dubravka; Ritchie, Lejeune, Lascelles, Schär, Yedlin; Atsu (Kenedy 87′), Longstaff, Hayden, Pérez (Manquillo 90+1′); Rondón.

Manchester City XI (4-3-3): Ederson; Danilo (Gündogan 83′), Laporte, Stones, Walker; D Silva, Fernandinho, De Bruyne (B Silva 65′); Sané (Jesus 73′), Aguero, Sterling.

I am ‘City light’ (only got Laporte) and aiming to stay that way. Rather prep for GW27 than bring in City GW25 who may only play one game and be out GW27. Rolling my transfers instead.

So my GW25 captain choices are:

    A) Salah
    B) Hazard
    C) Richarlison

    Who do I go for?

      Salah to play it safe.
      Hazard as the differential.

Yeah probably go Salah though not softest of fixtures.

Hazard unreliable but with so many getting rid a differential.

Richarlison DGW the only argument but one of those re City.

Haz and Richarlison both going GW27.

      Fab (Hamer)
Robertson, Doherty, Wan B (Digne, Simpson)

Hard to say. I can see both of them missing one of the next two games, which kind of reduces the appeal for me. If Mendy is ready to start at the weekend it wouldn't surprise me if Pep shakes things up - Sterling left, Bernardo or Mahrez right maybe.

I have no City players, and I think the smart thing to do is to ship Haz for Sane.

Yes, Chelsea has Hudd, but Hazard is not delivering points to match his price. And after Hudd, they go up against City, then a blank, then Spurs..

Sane will get me a City player to keep for the rest of the season. After their blank 27 they have West Ham, Bou and Watford.

Just my two cents on the keep or ship Hazard talk

I was dead set on getting rid of Richarlison but now I'm reluctant to get rid before DGW since he scored a goal last night. I don't really want to get rid of TAA since I've held onto him for this long. Lindelof looks expendable. He's not going to score many goals and he's proved pretty useless at retaining clean sheets. With city in dire states in the title race plus with crap defenses of arsenal and Everton don't think it's advisable to go with no city the especially when sane can be easily afforded even if kun/sterling difficult to accommodate. These are assets likely to play 110 to 160 mins vs those defenses

City have lost 4 of their last 9 league games, haven’t really looked themselves of late. 3 cleansheets in 14 GW’s, and their next 4 fixtures are Arsenal, Everton, Chelsea, blank...

Champions league starting up again, they have league cup final, FA Cup, and attacking points they do score are split between Sterling, Sané, Kuo, Jesus, Dilva, KDB, even Mahrez & Bilva

I’ve got 2 FT & 5.4 ITB & think i’ll be bypassing City altogether (apart from Ederson who I can’t wait to get rid of after the DGW)

Haz home to Huddersfield could score more than Sterling & Sané combined in the DGW

City looked uninspired yesterday, and a team that usually would see a first goal as motivation to go get 5 more looked to fall back and not attack like we expect them to. Their defence looked weak and that could see Pep bring in some changes, although I would expect at least Ederson to keep his spot. The midfield looks like it will see significant rotation for DGW25 with many players getting minutes, and the same looks possible with Aguero/Jesus. Sterling and Sane didn't particularly impress in GW24 even though they had some chances.

How have your thoughts about the minutes that Sterling, Sane, Aguero, KDB, and the defence get in the DGW changed?

Do you think Sterling / Sane are still good options? Would you bring a City asset in for a hit? What about Aguero's potential?

And with Digne's red card, are you selling or holding him? His price tag (5.3m) might make him easier to hold, particularly for those who bought him early.

How are you balancing the potential and risk of GW25 with the later blanks and upcoming fixtures for other players?

    1. Robson-Canoe

Only have Sané as a DGW player - will keep and not bring in any others
This DGW is a massive trap and people will be takings hits to get rid of all their Everton and City assets after it.

I don't have any yet.. only Richarlison and Digne, who will be on the bench for me.

I'll still likely try to get one City player in as I want some piece of the action but I agree, hits and 3 City options might be too much

Nice post.. those first two sentences really make me wary of City. My move all along was Haz > Sterling but now I'm reconsidering. It will like you say really depend on how he looks today.

Haz could be a hugely important player going forward but at the same time I have 2 FT so moving him out for one GW might not be the end of the world.

Captaining a DGW player is a must for me; if I don't get a City option in I'd probably end up captaining Richarlison over Salah/Haz/anyone else in my team

The irony is there’s a very good chance that both Salah & Haz beat any & all DGW players in DGW25

West Ham appear to have downed tools so Liverpool could run riot there on Monday night... and Haz home to Huddersfield - that is a Haz flat track bully type of fixture. Huddersfield are a bad, bad team...

I have no City and wouldn't dream of removing Hazard with Huddersfield at the Bridge or Salah @ West Ham. I'd also be happy to captain either of them.

If I make a move it will be Aubameyang ➡ Kun(c) but that would need reversing a week or two later. It would therefore essentially be a -8 because GW31-33 need preparing for too and transfers are at a premium.

It's not beyond consideration for me to swerve the DGW altogether (apart from Richarlison), save my FT and captain Salah.

I think the performance yesterday will make Pep change things up over the next 3 fixtures.

The defence wasn't that poor, but Fernandinho, KDB, Sane Sterling and Aguero were off the pace. Mendy will challenge Danilo at LB. Danilo and Walker will be fighting it out at RB. Jesus, Gundogan and Mahrez will be fighting for spots and will be justified given how poor the midfield and attack were.

Currently have Rich and Digne. Think I'll do Digne > Laporte and roll my other transfer.

Feel like this is going to be a trap. Don't think either of the mids are worth getting in for Hazard who has HUD at home, and Auba > Kun also has my trap sense tingling.

Rolling my other transfer also gives me two frees to get rid of Rich and Laporte (or Hazard) before 27 without having to take hits.

Saved FT and had planned Haz to Sterling / KDB next week and lose Rich / Digne before GW27.

Will swap Digne for Pereira a week early, I'm done with the red cards anyway.

Might still swap Haz for KDB next week and bring him back in GW29.

Thinking Rich to Mané before GW27 and then get Son in GW29.

I can see Otamendi coming in at the weekend, probably at the expense of Stones, after Pep's comments on them not dealing with long balls to Rondon. I expect rotation in midfield - possibly Bernardo coming in for KDB, and also out wide. If Mendy is back it gives Pep the option of moving Sterling to the left, and playing Mahrez right. I currently own Aguero and am tempted by Sterling, but that move depends on Hazard's performance tonight. Lots to think about.

I currently have Aguero, Ederson, Richarlison and Digne and have enough in the bank to do a Salah-Sterling okey-cokey in GW25/26; but now I'm not so sure. Depending on what's happening with Pogba and Martial, I could trade one of them for Dilva or Bilva (and Bilva's energy could be what's needed to get City going again).I'm also tempted to ditch Digne in view of the harder fixtures and blank after the DGW, and my lack of defensive cover given I also have TAA. It will depend on the Pressers.

Already own triple city and double Everton, which hasn't been good for the past few weeks but let's see if they can pay me back in gw25.

Digne's suspension throws a spanner in the works for me. I don't want to bring in another Everton defender as I don't see that many points for them and it creates a problem for gw27. I think I may just get a Liverpool defender for him.

Will prob downgrade Digne to Bednarek and Arnautovic to Jimenez.

Then I will have to decide if I take a hit, and which one.
Two options - Aguero for Aubameyang, Son for Richarlison.

Depends on how Spurs and Son look tonight, and maybe also Hazard and Higuain would could throw a spanner in the works.

Have Digne and Richarlison for Eve. Will bench Digne and replace him at a later date, not interested in taking a hit to replace him with another dgw player.

Looking at doing the Auba Aguero hokey-cokey and captaining him. That will be enough man city I think.

Currently own just Richarlison and Digne who have a double. Deliberately avoided City from GW21 onwards due to their fixtures so this DGW is most unwelcome really.

I'm not interested in their defenders or goalkeeper at all. They tend to concede few chances but the chances they do concede tend to be big ones. They are also expensive and rotation risks, which isn't a good combination!

Aguero and Jesus I'm going to guess will get a game each. I considered Auba to one of these as a HOHO transfer for my team but it doesn't seem worth it when I will want Auba back straight after anyway. Auba could well score at the Etihad given the City defence too. So I'm avoiding these 2.

That said, I think Sterling and Sane are still great options for GW25. They seem to be the players most in favour with Pep and possess the greatest attacking threat, and lets remember that the Arsenal and Everton defence are both considerably worse than Newcastle's. So I think avoiding City entirely is risky. Therefore Sane is likely to be my transfer in for GW25.

Digne has to go now. I was selling him in GW27 anyway, so just need to decide which defender to get instead. One that plays in GW27 with a decent fixture is the priority over a defender having a good fixture in GW25, as I'm quite well covered for GW25 already.

Overall, I think playing the long game is the strategy to have right now. Certainly up until GW31, anyway.

The City DGW is exactly what I didn't want as well with no City in my team. I'm not interested in their defenders or GK for this DGW but if their fixtures had been better after I might consider it.

I agree that Sterling and Sane are great options and it's hard to go without entirely. Sane or Sterling are likely to play a part in both games, even if they only start one of them. They still have huge attacking potential and, if you get one that starts both, the appearance points plus potential clean sheets alone makes them a good captaincy option. Getting rid of Hazard for one of them will be hard though.

Are you moving Digne now? For me there's no need as I have a good enough defence for GW25 so I'll wait and reassess next week. No need to make a transfer for the future that won't help me immediately.

I already own Sane. I bought Auba at the same price he is now and also own Digne. I have a strong squad and 2 FT. I will do Auba/Digne > Augero/Danillo.

Am I confident about this double? No. But what is the risk? It will be Aguero/Danillo with a potential 180 mins each vs Auba/AWB (Auba vs City) with 90 mins each.

I don't want to break up my Salah/Hazard/Pogba/Sane midfield and have value in all. But Digne is for the chop with his blank and poor fixtures and I can just bring Auba back in for Kun the following week.

Who knows, it could go really well and I may end up with a big green arrow. If it doesn't I don't see myself losing any ground. It's a gamble with a low % but a high upside with very little downside.

I don't think yesterday has changed much. City are still a very good attacking team with two fixtures. They struggled to break down Newcastle, but Arsenal and Everton are nowhere near as well organised. We already knew about the rotation risks.

I have Sane, Mendy, Richarlison, and Digne. I'm doing Hazard > KDB, triple captaining a Man City mid, and benching Digne.

I think Sane and KDB are the best bets to start both fixtures of the premium attackers. Mendy was a bit of a punt but hopefully he'll feature vs. Arsenal and start vs. Everton.

Plan afterwards is Richarlison, Digne, Ward (Cardiff one) > 3 x GW27 players (-4) (e.g. Son, TAA/Pereira, Puncheon) then I can bench my 3 Man City players for their BGW.

1 hit for triple man City in a DGW and 11 players in the BGW looks ok to me.

I don't mind these transfers at all, got already 5 players for the BGW 31 and will gradually buy more after 27. I will be just fine with 9 players (including the prime ones) in GW31 to tackle DGW32.

I can't help wondering if everyone saying 'it's a trap' is actually the real trap..

Sane and Sterling will both play at least once, with the chance to play twice or 1.5 times. They can score in any game and even though City have faltered recently there's every chance they could score 4 or 5 goals. In both games even. If we're talking about ceilings I think the City boys have to be thought to have the highest. And with the potential for 2 games the odds tell me they have the highest floor. Hazard > Sane feels wrong, so does Pogba > Sane, but for people with 2 FTs who can reverse it next week I can't see not making that move

            Problem with Pogba is:

            1) High ownership.
            2) Value lost if you ship out and ship straight back in.

Yeah.. I have lots of value in him too. Not really thinking about it too much until after the games tonight though

Yep it comes down to the individual team. 2ft’s or a stable squad could allow a Hokey Cokey type transfer but once you start bringing hits into the equation then it becomes much more evenly balanced.
I watched the Huddersfield v Everton game and if Hazard performs tonight then I would really fancy him at home against that Huddersfield side. To swap him for a Sterling/Sané who is under threat of rotation and for a hit, which it would be for me probably, then it becomes less clear. A Hazard captain in that situation would be a great differential to boot.

Really think this could be a trap, but willing to role the dice on it.

Have Sane and had planned to do Martial to B.Silva which I will do. But no TC for Sane.... that's just too much of a risk.

I failed to get past your first sentence, so forgive me if the rest wasn't nonsense.
        "Failed to attack" just ridiculous.

Have Sterling and Aguero. If Pogba is out for sometime may gamble to bring in Dilva on my FT but most likely to roll my FT. I have 3 players for GW 31 and can bring in 7 more players without taking any hits over the next few weeks. Carrying to 2FTs to BGW 27 is the main plan as by then all information on who is blanking will be available. I may TC Sterling as City will be hurting and will unleash some fury on Arsenal and Everton.

It looks like you didn't even really read the first sentence 😉

I said that they did 'not attack like we expect them to' - at the most basic level what this could be taken to mean is that I (we) expect them to attack in ways that result in goals or chances better than what they created. Based on what you saw yesterday do you disagree? Do you think they played well in attack?

That's not all I was saying but you put words in quotes that I didn't say and then called that thing I didn't say ridiculous and nonsense..

It would be great to see posts from managers so confident about Hazard after seeing his (and whole team) performance at Bournemouth. Please refresh hot topic 😉

Planning to do Firmino and Rashford out for Aguero (c) and Niasse for free?

      That will give me:
      The
      Lloris
      Rudiger Bennett Robertson Bamba
      Hazard Salah Pogba Richarlison
      Aguero (c) Jimenez

      (Button Niasse Hobjberg Balbuna)

      Thoughts?

Not a fan as you will want Rashford and Firmino back after the DGW - hell you will even want them during GW25

No city and just have Richarlison as a double starter next week. Best option?
      A) Auba to Kun (then reverse after next week).
      B) Digne to Danilo/Stones.
      C) Neither
      D) Both.

Like many I'd like Son over anyone, but Hazard is my only easy route to that.

Montoya (Brighton) looks nailed with good fixtures apart from the BGW27
Ecuele Manga (Cardiff) has great fixtures, but....it's Cardiff
        Jonny (Wolves)
        Tomkins (Palace)

Have 0.1 before I lose value on Digne. If he can survive falling price until Friday (not tonight, or Thursday) then his red flag will be removed on Saturday evening, and he will revert back to 0% and be locked for 1 week.

      No sweat.

Yup. People will continue to mass sell during the locked period. Even once he gets unlocked it will be a long time before he hits 5.1m.

Well, yes, I'd expect him to fall once. I can take that before I lose true value.

Will he drop twice before Friday? I think not.
