Liverpool inched one point clear of Manchester City at the top of the Premier League table after a goalless draw at Old Trafford on Sunday.

While the match lacked goalmouth action, there was plenty to interest (and worry) Fantasy managers ahead of the Gameweek 28 deadline tomorrow night.

A remarkable first half saw four players – including Roberto Firmino – forced off through injury, while Marcus Rashford played through the pain barrier for the bulk of the match having picked up a knock very early on.

This stalemate in the north-west was Jurgen Klopp’s side’s third draw in four Gameweeks and the Reds’ attacking assets again failed to click in front of goal, having struggled for fluidity in the 1-1 draws with Leicester and West Ham over the last month.

Fantasy defenders were on top in this match, with Manchester United recording their fifth shut-out of 2019 and three of the Liverpool backline collecting FPL bonus points to supplement their clean sheets.

We delve into the myriad Fantasy talking points in our latest Scout Notes article below and bring you the latest quotes and updates on the walking wounded.

Manchester United 0-0 Liverpool

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer cast doubt on Marcus Rashford‘s (£7.8m) involvement in Gameweek 28 after Liverpool’s 0-0 draw with Manchester United, with the England forward having suffered an ankle injury in the opening exchanges of Sunday’s clash.

The Norwegian manager said:

I haven’t seen him after the game or after he had treatment. If he plays, I’ll be maybe surprised.

Rashy obviously was kicked, he did his ankle straight away. We should have took him off as well, but we couldn’t, could we? We played with ten-and-a-half men, but Rashy’s attitude made up for it, to be fair.

He worked the line well, we had to put him through the middle ‘cos we couldn’t risk them coming down the sides.

Solskjaer added to Sky Sports:

He was injured in the first minute, with the first tackle they made on him, one of plenty. [Jordan] Henderson went through him, his ankle is like a balloon. That was just one of many fouls on him.

Rashford’s injury was one of four sustained by United players during the match itself, with Juan Mata (£6.1m), Ander Herrera (£5.0m) and Jesse Lingard (£6.7m) – himself a substitute, having only just returned from a muscular issue – all succumbing to hamstring strains in the first half.

The United interim boss didn’t put a timeframe on those three players’ returns, saying that he had “no idea” when he can expect Mata, Herrera or Lingard back.

Solskjaer added:

You’re never surprised in football. You’ve always got to be ready for anything, losing three players in the first half with hamstring injuries.

We’ve lost a few with muscle injuries, hamstrings, but we’ve got some good kids coming through, so don’t worry about it. We’ll have 11 players on the pitch on Wednesday night, as well. Luckily we’ve got two days of recovery!

Anthony Martial (£7.2m) failed to recover from a groin problem for this fixture, while Nemanja Matic (£5.0m) missed out after picking up an injury in training.

Solskjaer said of the Serbian midfielder:

It’s a big blow, he’s had a muscle injury so will be out for a few weeks.

Nemanja with his experience and his performances lately had been vital for us.

Liverpool weren’t quite so badly affected by the on-field carnage but they did lose Roberto Firmino (£9.2m) to an ankle injury after just half an hour.

While Jurgen Klopp didn’t deliver a meaningful prognosis on the Brazilian striker, Firmino was seen leaving Old Trafford on crutches.

The Liverpool boss said:

Unfortunately, I have no clue. It was something with the ankle, that’s for sure.

Bobby said at first he could carry on but then he showed it didn’t work.

I don’t know exactly; it is Bobby, so it will be quicker than with all the others but first, we have to know what it is exactly and we don’t know at the moment.

Daniel Sturridge (£5.6m) replaced his injured team-mate on Sunday and could come into the reckoning for a rare start on Wednesday evening against Watford should Firmino be ruled out, though Divock Origi (£5.0m) and Xherdan Shaqiri (£6.9m) – who both came off the bench at Old Trafford – will be also vying for that third attacking slot alongside Mohamed Salah (£13.6m) and Sadio Mane (£9.6m).

It was another off-day for the Egyptian in a match against a fellow “big six” club – Salah has only delivered attacking returns in one of his eight league meetings with United, City, Chelsea, Arsenal and Spurs this season.

A skied free-kick attempt was Salah’s one effort on goal in Manchester, with the Egypt international looking laborious at times and frequently being dispossessed or guilty of taking a heavy touch – the fact that he scored zero on the Baseline Bonus Points System and was hooked on 78 minutes summed up his afternoon.

Happily for Salah and Liverpool, only two of those fixtures against “big six” opposition remain this season.

Watford are the visitors to Anfield on Wednesday, a team Salah has fond memories of after his 29-point haul against the Hornets in 2017/18.

This current version of Salah looks some way short of his best, however, and a Watford side that has conceded only three goals in the last five Gameweeks (registering three clean sheets along the way) will surely be a tougher nut to crack this time around – especially after two extra days’ rest.

Klopp said of Salah’s display:

Mo knows he can play better than he did today, we know he can. Two weeks ago, when we played against Bournemouth, that was amazing. Against Bayern he was up against Alaba, a world-class player himself, they are not blind.

It’s about how we use him, how we play him, how we move and all that stuff. Today obviously, Lindelof and Shaw together did a pretty good job. I have to talk here about the game, but I am not too much interested in that game anymore because I am thinking about what can I do so that we are really spot-on on Wednesday night.

Mane came into this match in scintillating FPL form but he too was to be frustrated by the United rearguard effort, not managing a single shot on goal or key pass.

United’s backline deserves credit for their stingy display and it is difficult to think of one decent opportunity the visitors carved out.

Sturridge’s speculative long-range effort, indeed, was the only shot on target that Klopp’s side had.

Luke Shaw (£5.0m) had an excellent game at left-back and was chiefly responsible for snuffing out Salah’s threat, while the solid Victor Lindelof (£5.0m) and Chris Smalling (£5.6m) ensured David de Gea (£5.7m) barely had to dirty his gloves.

No Premier League club has as many clean sheets as Manchester United in 2019.

Solskjaer said of his side’s defensive display:

Chris [Smalling] and Victor [Lindelof] are fantastic centre-backs and they defended really well. On Luke Shaw, when they took Salah off and they still needed a goal, you know how well he’s played.

I’ve got to say I’m very pleased with the defending. We know we’ve got to perform better with the ball. We can play better but then again I thought Paul [Pogba] was outstanding. Everything he did there was a thought behind it, so he stepped up again.

Sadly for Paul Pogba’s (£8.8m) Fantasy owners, most of what the Frenchman did well on Sunday was off the ball in a more tactically disciplined performance.

Who the Frenchman lines up alongside on Wednesday night at Selhurst Park and how that may adversely impact on his Fantasy returns remains to be seen.

Of what could be argued is United’s first-choice front six, only Pogba isn’t a doubt or ruled out for that midweek trip to south London.

Pogbay may find himself again starting alongside the likes of Scott McTominay (£4.2m), Andreas Pereira (£4.5m), Romelu Lukaku (£10.7m) and Alexis Sanchez (£10.0m), all of whom featured at Old Trafford on Sunday as the injuries mounted.

As Solskjaer was correct to point out, however, United enjoyed the better of what few opportunities there were, with Lingard being denied by a last-ditch Alisson (£6.0m) intervention, Pogba seeing a goalbound effort headed away by Virgil van Dijk (£6.5m) and Smalling unable to reach a teasing Lukaku delivery late on.

The interim United boss said:

We’ve come out with so many positives. I cannot remember David having to make a save, so we kept them out of it and we probably created one or two massive moments that we could have scored. Chris, if he was a striker, he would have got his studs on that one. Jesse’s chance, before he got the recurrence of his injury, was the biggest.

While Alisson, van Dijk and Andrew Robertson (£6.8m) enjoyed bonus points to go with their clean sheets, one Liverpool defender who missed out on a defensive haul was Trent Alexander-Arnold (£5.2m).

The England full-back was overlooked in favour of James Milner (£5.6m), with Klopp explaining his selection decision before kick-off:

Trent was out for a while, played the last game and we have two games coming up. We will need Trent in the next weeks very much. So I don’t want to do it today and Wednesday, for example, which is a difficult task and we have Millie available, that helps.

Manchester United (4-4-2 diamond): de Gea; Young, Smalling, Lindelof, Shaw; Herrera (Pereira 21′), McTominay, Pogba, Mata (Lingard 25′, Sanchez 43′); Lukaku, Rashford.

Liverpool XI (4-3-3): Becker; Milner, Matip, van Dijk, Robertson; Henderson (Shaqiri 72′), Fabinho, Wijnaldum; Salah (Origi 78′), Firmino (Sturridge 31′), Mane.

He will play most games but as it is BGW coming up there´s that slight worry that if you own him he´ll be benched in just the games you really need him for. With Robbo and VVD you don´t have to worry but they come at a higher cost. Fulham away in 31 sounds like a game TAA plays in though.

Not sure i would lose Pogba just yet but buying with that amount of injuries i´m not very keen on anymore. Can´t see them score much vs Palace, Saints and Arsenal with decimated squad.

I dont think so they can go with both Mahrez & Sane.
Dinho & Laporte injuries means they are anyways missing 2 players.
Sane has been pretty crap lately and Mahrez has hardly played any PL games.
Also they are going for the title cant afford to drop any points.

Thinking of these moves for GW28 with building for GW31 in mind:

AWB, Rash > TAA, Barnes (2FT)

    Would give me:

    Fab
    Robbo, TAA, Doherty, Pereira
    Salah, Pogba, Son
    Kun, Barnes, Jimi
    (Hamer) (Jota, Luiz, JWP)

Could also consider a -4 for
    Hamer > Dubravka?

    What do you think?

So hard to think of this as a smooth after a 33 - 4 overall score, but here goes :

Schar & Arnie(C) in for Firmino and AWB for -4. Nine points better off than I would have been. (and Arnie didn't even start!)

Nobody else (apart from Shaw) performed... 0,1,3,1,3,2,1,2

I had 11 players playing without a hit. Actually 13 players that played including my bench. I still however only scored 23 points with Doherty’s 5 points being my highest scorer as I left Robertson’s 8 points on the bench. Keeping Auba for a while to ‘have the stand out captain for GW27’ has been a master stroke 🙁

      Oh boy.

Rough all the way to 27 points (-4)

Nobody did anything, except Barnes and Yedlin (who I got in for Holebas for a hit, which is a small smooth (?) )
Deulofeu as first sub so was rooting for auba - my captain ofcourse - not to play. I actually played Dendoncker instead of Deulo, which seems like a horrible mistake but wasn't that unwise looking at their underlying stats before.

You win some, you lose some 🙂

Smooth: Took out Kamara and Richarlison for Rondon and Hayden for -4 (16 points instant profit). Have Robbo,Kola,Doherty in defense.
Rough: Auba captain 🙁 The only thing preventing a good week from being a glorious one having earmarked him for captaincy weeks back and expecting 20+ points from him.

56 points (-4) and 33k rank jump. Still pleased

Smooth; 46 points and only Rashford to deal with in a week most got below 40 is ok.
Rough; Had to play Puncheon and he started so at least i had a hope of 2 points but no, red card and subbed after 14 minutes.. just kidding-). On a more serious note, Firmino injured after 30 minutes after United down to bare bones was actually the most rough on the week, i had Mané captain and i knew my chances was severely damaged the minute Sturridge came on. And the torment of not knowing the extent of Firminos injury as a Pool fan is overshadowing any FPL matters right now-)

Rough: 32 after a hit for Pereira and Anderson in for Richarlison and Digne

Rough: Son captain. Fraser no assist due to King's miss.

Smooth: Everything else. Especially Alisson+Robbo+Salah+Pogba+Rashford. 26 points with the majority coming from the least effectively owned. Justice for Fraser with 1 bonus, even if it did steal it off Doherty who I also own. Potentially decent transfers: Kun+AWB to Arnie+Lascelles. 8 point gain so far (would have had Bed/Punch on the pitch). Can now switch to Sterling for his up coming megahauls.

      Smooth:
Had planned well, had 14 playing players for BGW27, only Sterling without a game. And not full of cr@p I wanted to get rid of either.

      Rough:
It started with AWB, then Firmino & Rashford. Auba (C) didn't go well. Son didn't perform with Kane back. Periera got nowt.

Total 28pts and 3 injuries to deal with (AWB Rashford and Firmino) when my plan had been to start tweaking ready for GW31/33 (FH32)

      Pretty much all rough.

Used Ft to swap Lindelof to Pereira which went terribly wrong.

      Robertson CS my only return.

Deulofeu and Babel owner. Transferred in Lascelles for Alonso, Doherty and Jiménez chipped in and got lucky with Peltier being dropped meant I got Robertson’s 8 points off bench. Rose from 52k to 21k with a Son Captain fail thrown in.

      All out on 36.

      Smooth: Doherty, Robbo, Jimenez.

Rough: Pogba(c), Anderson coming in and did nothing

Smooth: I'm glad I got away without doing the Aguero>Auba hokey cokey completion. Only got XI out. Nearly took a hit for Digne>Yedlin after the WB news, would only have yielded a point after all with the booking.

Dipped to 25k over last here weeks from 22k.

Pretty meh week and really dissappointed that the standout captain option in my opinion, Aubameyang, who I owned and was comparitively low owned overall, got one point. The decision to play the long term game and hold him through gameweeks 25 to 27 has been a complete disaster, truth be told.

However, 44 overall I can't be too unhappy with given its a green arrow, and the free transfer of Wan -Bissaka to Lejeurne paid off immediately which was nice.

Rough: Used FT on Digne -> Pereira. Zero points, but I guess it should pay off in the long run.
Captained Son. At least he did better than Auba. 😀

Smooth: Took a -8 point hit and did AWB and Rashford -> Lejeune and Rondon. Worked out nicely. A shame I didn't captain Rondon though.

I owe Az my smooth this week: got Kola instead of Pereira, had Laca capt instead of Auba, and went for the “early” Rashford to Rondon swap (which makes even more sense now with his injury)... halved my OR from 55k to 28k with 66 pts

Smooth: Brought in Rondón. Jiménez and Doherty delivered. But the best part is my ML Rival using his FH (only outscoring me by 3 points), and now he is without FH & Wildcard with following players not playing in GW31 and/or GW33:
Etheridge, Kolasinac, Stones, Shaw, Sterling, Redmond, Agüero, Rashford, and I'm not shi**ing my pants over those he can field: Kanté, Calvert-Lewin, Richarlison + the standard Salah, Robertson, Boruc & Pereira.

Rough: Captained Son. Brought in Pereira which made me bench Robertson (as I had van Dijk in my playing 11). 46 points in total.

      Rough

      Smooth
      Steklenburg, Sigurdsson & AWB > Fabianski, F.Anderson & Pereria for a -4 gained me 1pt.

AWB injury was a pain. I needed him for my FH31 strategy, but also needed him to play in GW27 to field XI. I had 2FTs, so I sold him for Clyne (2pts), who lost his clean sheet to a late Jimenez penalty. Using this unplanned transfer also loses me a 1 or 2 fixtures further down the line during the blanks and doubles (depending on FA Cup Quarters results) unless I replace them with hits. Despite this, I still only fielded 9 players as Martial and Alexander-Arnold didn't play along with my 3 blankers.

My main smooths were captaining Son (2) over Aubameyang (1) and returns from Robertson (8) and Doherty (5). Howerver, that only acculumated to a total of 29 points, which saw me drop from 23k to 32k. And who know's maybe that small AWB sale will force me into FH32, which may end up being a blessing in disguise. Small, unpredicable events can have massive consequences 😮

Took a -8 to get 11 out and got 33 points and a 4th straight red.

Prior to the Man City double GW had a 20 point ML lead and now 6th and 80 behind.

Going on the basis never to get too high or low and hope things turn. Squad only seems good on paper right now...

So hear it goes lads. Transfers were Richarlison to Anderson and AWB to Chilwell(knew he was a slight doubt but gambled as Puel said it wasn't serious).

      The chain of events:

      Benched Snodgrass - 8points Anderson - 2 pointer
Captained Aubameyang and TAA who I also owned did not start. Chilwell did not start.
Auba came on to prevent Snoddy's points off the bench.
Bednarek off the bench with one point and no other defender to replace the other as....drum roll...my other defender is Laporte who to end the day nicely got injured in the Carabao cup final!

While smooth overall (50 - 4 and a small green arrow), it included a truly massive rough: Took a hit to Son (C) & Arnautovic in for Aguero & Richarlison, but the real issue was benching Deulofeu! I've played him plenty of times this season for no rewards, so this hurt even more than just the lost points. Throw in the fact I'd have reached my highest ever OR (top 20 in the world) if I had done literally nothing at all to my team.

Yes, of course in hindsight it was a poor call, but Deulofeu's done absolutely nothing for me in weeks of ownership even against weak teams like Cardiff and, despite believing he had been unlucky and was probably due some returns eventually, I just finally lost faith. I felt like I needed a stronger captain too, hence the move for Son. All in all a disastrous decision - easily my worst of the season - and a tough one to recover from.

Unlucky Mr Bond. Seemed to me to be a good week to save the transfer if you could get XI out. Swings and roundabouts though, as your more cavalier approach is what got you here in the first place! Better luck next GW 🙂

Thanks mate. Yeah it's just not my style do nothing when I see a (usually fixture-based) opportunity. I was lacking captaincy options, and then to be honest I just really really wanted Arnie for that Fulham game. Even though he got benched, he came on for a cameo to get an assist, hit the woodwork with a smashing shot, and miss a simple headed chance. Could so easily have hauled in 20 minutes.

Live by the sword, die by the sword and all that. I still got a green arrow so not a disaster, but of course it could have been a truly incredible gameweek if I'd played that little magician. The one thing I've been able to do best this season is avoid awful GWs. Even when I make benching mistakes (there have been soooooo many of them) and have captaincy fails (also, a huge amount of these considering where I'm placed), I've somehow avoided any shockers. I'd like to think at least part of the reason for that is because the hits and being active tend to me going into each GW with a strong team set up for those fixtures, even if there was a -4 thrown in to get there. I haven't had a single GW score of 100+, so it's really been all about consistency.

Adam Levy scored 69 (thanks to 23 points from Deulofeu) and is now number two in the world as well as leading both the main FFS League and the FFS Members League.

B Rashford to Aguero and Son to 5.4 m mid who plays 31/33- any suggestions? And captain Aguero

Well, seeing that Jesus is apparently not fit yet I'd tend to agree.

More to the point, how will City stand up after 120 hard minutes yesterday, Chelsea gave them a proper game? You'd certainly think Pep must refresh things but you may well be right about Kun specifically.

I was originally going to do Laca to Aguero as I have funds, but the rest of my team probably needs more attention, especially if Rash if out. Would Anderson and Deu to Mane and Hayden be worth a -4? Might mean Higuaín next week instead of Aguero
