We’re at the halfway point in our team news summaries for Gameweek 28, after ten Premier League press conferences were held on Monday.

The other ten are scheduled for either this morning or early afternoon, ahead of the Fantasy Premier League deadline at 18:45 this evening.

Things We’ve Learned

All of the “big six” managers will hold their pressers later today, so the information we have gathered so far may not quite pack the same punch as the injury news to follow at – for example – Manchester United, Liverpool and Manchester City.

Ben Chilwell (knock) has been declared fully fit by interim Leicester City boss Mike Stowell ahead of the Foxes’ clash with Brighton and Hove Albion on Tuesday night, with only long-term injury victims Marc Albrighton (hamstring) and Daniel Amartey (leg) unavailable for Gameweek 28.

There’ll be a great deal of interest in how Leicester’s Fantasy assets fare in their first match following Claude Puel’s departure, though Stowell suggested he wouldn’t be making wholesale changes when he leads the team out at the King Power Stadium:

Literally, we’ve had one training session with them because yesterday was a recovery day. We will tweak a few things here and there, but they’re not playing poorly, by the way.

Chris Hughton will make late checks on Glenn Murray (knock), Lewis Dunk (knock) and Jurgen Locadia (ankle), meanwhile, though Solly March (ankle) has been passed fit to play.

Leon Balogun (knock) remains out.

The Brighton boss said:

Balogun would be the only one that’s definitely not available. Glenn [was] introduced to training only the last day, Lewis Dunk as well, Izquierdo is back training. Solly’s trained the last few days, he’s fine. Jurgen’s trained only yesterday.

There was nothing new to report on Tyneside ahead of Newcastle v Burnley, with Rafael Benitez only without Rob Elliot (back) and Ciaran Clark (knock) for Tuesday’s match.

Sean Dyche added that the Clarets had come through their win over Spurs unscathed, so Steven Defour (calf), Aaron Lennon (knee) and Jon Walters (Achilles) remain his only absentees.

Nuno Espirito Santo also has a fully-fit squad to choose from, though his opposite number on Tuesday evening, Jan Siewert, reported a number of issues in his press conference.

The Huddersfield boss said:

Diakhaby’s still not available, unfortunately. I think it will take time. Isaac Mbenza is still injured and Danny Williams, of course. We have some small problems, but not as serious as those three.

Siewert said that he hoped Erik Durm (hip) will return, while Alex Pritchard is available after minor back problems.

Winston Reid (knee) and Fabian Balbuena (knee) have returned to training at West Ham United after their injury lay-offs but Manuel Pellegrini said on Monday that the pair had only participated in “part of the session” so they would appear unlikely to feature against Manchester City on Wednesday.

The Hammers’ boss also said that the club were being “careful” with Manuel Lanzini after the Argentinean’s recent comeback:

We must be careful with him. I think that he played 15 minutes [v Fulham] and he did very well. We will see which is the best way to give him more minutes in every game.

Kiko Femenia (hamstring) and Jose Holebas (suspended) are Watford’s only confirmed absentees for the trip to Anfield, though Javi Gracia said the former is closing in on a return:

In this moment we only have Kiko Femenia injured. He is training and today he trained with the team but he is not fit. He needs more time to stay in the best condition, but he’s the only player not available for the next game.

After a 17-day break, Everton are back in action this evening.

The Toffees are almost at full strength, with Marco Silva only having Yerry Mina (foot) to worry about from an injury point of view – though Kurt Zouma misses out through suspension.

Silva said:

Jags [Jagielka] is OK, working with the team since the break started. Leighton [Baines] also. Mina in doubt, worked last two days and will be in doubt until tomorrow. Let’s see after one more session.

The Toffees travel to Wales to play Cardiff on Tuesday evening, with Neil Warnock reporting that “one or two lads” had fallen victim to the same bug that caused Lee Peltier – who remains a minor doubt for Gameweek 28 – to miss the defeat to Watford on Friday.

Warnock also had plenty to say on Victor Camarasa (calf):

Victor’s training now so I don’t know really know about him. He’s looking on song, back to normal.

We think he’s closer to fitness than what his guys think, but then obviously you run the risk if you make him play and he breaks down, what are they going to say?

He obviously listens to his physios, medical people and Tom, Dick and Harry from abroad. I thought he was fit ten days ago, so they’ve said they don’t want him playing for ten days. So ten days is up today, I think.

MANAGERS YET TO DELIVER A PRESS CONFERENCE

Unai Emery (Arsenal)
Eddie Howe (Bournemouth)
Maurizio Sarri (Chelsea)
Roy Hodgson (Crystal Palace)
Claudio Ranieri (Fulham)
Jurgen Klopp (Liverpool)
Pep Guardiola (Manchester City)
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer (Manchester United)
Ralph Hasenhuttl (Southampton)
Mauricio Pochettino (Spurs)

INJURY NEWS THAT MAY BE UPDATED ON TUESDAY

  • Arsenal have doubts over Alex Iwobi (knock), Ainsley Maitland-Niles (illness) and Stephan Lichtsteiner (back).
  • Callum Wilson (knee) and David Brooks (ankle) are thought to be medium-term absentees for Bournemouth and are not currently scheduled to return till March.
  • Aaron Wan-Bissaka (hamstring) missed out on the win over Leicester City on Saturday, though no timeframe was put on the Palace right-back’s return.
  • Andre Schurrle missed Fulham’s defeat to West Ham United through illness.
  • Roberto Firmino (ankle) was seen leaving Old Trafford on crutches after sustaining an injury in the 0-0 draw with Manchester United on Sunday. Jurgen Klopp said he had “no clue” about the severity of the problem after full-time of that match.
  • Gabriel Jesus (hamstring), John Stones (groin) and Benjamin Mendy (knee) missed the EFL Cup final but Pep Guardiola said all three were “getting better” in a previous press conference on Friday. Aymeric Laporte and Fernandinho, who picked up muscle injuries on Sunday, are set to be out for “some weeks”, according to their manager.
  • Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said on Sunday that he would be “maybe surprised” if Marcus Rashford (ankle) was fit to face Crystal Palace in midweek. Juan Mata, Ander Herrera and Jesse Lingard all fell victim to hamstring injuries against Liverpool, while Anthony Martial (groin) wasn’t quite ready to feature.
  • Danny Ings (hamstring) is a major doubt for Southampton’s six-pointer against Fulham, while Michael Obafemi appeared to suffer a recurrence of his own hamstring problem in the defeat to Arsenal on Sunday.
  • Mauricio Pochettino said last Thursday that Dele Alli (hamstring) was “maybe one week, maybe ten days, maybe two weeks” away from a playing return.

Predicted line-ups and in-depth team news on the ten teams who have held press conferences already can be found here.

What do you think of my team?
I've been loading up, in readiness for the blank week.
I still have a free hit and triple captain.

    Etheridge
    Doherty Robertson Pereira Shaw
    Jota Mane Salah Pogba
    Aguero Jiminez

    Button, Barnes, AWB, Suarez

Captain choice is massive this week IMO, went Rondon last week which turned out a good call but heads all over the place this week, opinions please .....
Jimenez - Initially had armband on him as it's Huddersfield, but they lost the reverse fixture which worries me here.

Rondon - Do I stick with him as Captain against on form Burnley?

Richarlison - Plays leaky Cardiff, massive differential but off form.

Auba - Home to Bournemouth who dont travel well.

Salah - Likes playing Watford but off form as are his team, Watford flying.

Pogba - Palace away, not very appealing this week.

Redmond - Fulham at home but too risky, gut says he scores.

Who gets the most points folks?

I don't see that as safe given that he was on the bench last game, and they won quite convincingly without. Seen a few fans (on AFTV admittedly..) say they prefer Laca up front on his own then Auba coming off the bench.

Salah is the safest out of those. Although Firmino is to be ruled out of the game + Everton (acc to Liv Echo). Klopp presser at half 1.

Planning to BB in DGW32 (FH31) so looking to bring Aguero in for Auba. Fairly convinced to wait a week, especially after Aguero played 120 minutes and Auba was rested against SOU. So next week, i'm looking at Auba and Kola to Aguero and 4.3 max defender (possibly Montoya of Brighton - got HUD in GW29 and likely double in GW32). What do you reckon?

Contemplating the same and I think I might just do it, accepting that he may be benched. WHU, bou, WAT are great fixtures so even if he starts 2 I would expect 2 double digit hauls.

    A) Button to Heaton (Guaita other keeper, no GW31 keeper).

      no

  10. _Make

    Kind of bottomed:

At the end of the season I'd like to do a retrospective of fixtures vs points gained on the fixture ticker so we can try and see to what extent fixtures make a difference, for midfielders/forwards and defenders, and cheap/mid/premium as separate categories. I want to try to see all the fixtures, all the players who played 60+ in each fixture, what their points were and how these points related to the shade of blue on the ticker.

I would like to establish whether fixtures really are worth even looking at, and if so, who benefits.

I would be interested in putting together a community article if FFS (@geoff maybe?) is able to share the fixture ticker data for the entire season. If there is a stats or data whizz who is interested in taking part then so much the better as I don't think I'll be able to crunch the numbers on my own!

I know RMT probably factors all this stuff in but it would be interesting to see if we can come up with a rough multiplier for fixture data.

    1. _Make
      • 9 Years
      7 years, 5 months ago

Also it would be great to see if there are any specific players who consistently outscore / under-perform their fixture difficulty. We kind of know who these players are, anecdotally, but it would be good to gather the underlying data.

Interested to see what others here say and if anyone else is interested in jumping and helping out (the stats/data whizzes)

Who do you think is better for this GW in particular ?
    1) Pogba
    2) Sterling.

    Thanks for the help.

If Sterling starts, then him for sure. Otherwise Pogba. Just feel like there's too many injuries for United at the moment which will make harder for Pogba if he's playing with inferior players like Sanchez and Lukaku (as opposed to Rashford).

Pogba guaranteed a game and Sterling may be rested, but Sterling with the higher points ceiling. Depends how risky you want to be.

I've been holding onto jota as a differential but he hasn't really pulled through for me. Now I've got Harvey Barnes I want to catch his first real haul. Cannot bench both and definitely dont want to bench Doherty

Is it make you mind up time today for chip strategy as whatever transfers you do before this evenings deadline should line up with your chip strategy?
    e.g.
    FH31, BB/TC32: DGW32 player(s)
WC30: Players with good fixtures in GW29 and 30
FH32: BGW31 players with an eye on BGW33 as well
    FH33: BGW31 and/or DGW32 players
    WC32: BGW31 players

Except for Save FT which keeps your options open

I note the Captain Sensible says it's a straightforward pick this week. It's not.

    I have:

Salah - the obvious choice but off form. A rank protecting option.
Sterling - the differential captain but will he be rotated?
Aguero - likewise - if he getting a game?
Pogba - guaranteed a start but Palace are looking reasonable and I don't think it'll be an easy game for Utd
Jimenez - Huddersfield are rotten, but do you ignore the above to captain him?

Top of my ML with a 72 point cushion, OR 11.9k with aspirations of my first top 10k finish.

Head says Salah, heart says Sterling...thoughts?

    Fabianski
    Robertson, Kolasinac, Doherty
    Sterling, Salah, Son, Pogba, Mane
    Rashford, Jimenez

It could work but i'd be tempted to stick with A. Kuns minutes could be managed, TAA hasn't been starting since injury and Leicester have a new manager incoming (although Vardy should still start).

What about the dross before and after it? Ranieri got sacked despite winning the league. Same with Conte and Mourinho. Rodgers only got close, and even then he had the best player (arguably) in the world for that calendar year.

Sigh this myth will never die will it. All the slip did was allow Chelski to score and LFC couldn't find a way to score that day regardless so at most would have been a draw which still wasn't enough to win the league.

They effectively blew their chance the game prior against Palace when Bodgers the moron threw away a 3 nil lead by trying to close an impossible goal differential gap to City.

Yes totally full of himself and can't back it up. His transfer signings for us were atrocious and completely squandered the Suarez windfall.

Given the management situation at Leicester, what do you expect to happen in tonight's game Leicester v Brighton?

Leicester's form since 2019 is WLLLDLLL. Also, Brighton haven't played since 16th Feb so have had plenty of time to plan and prepare for this game. I can see Brighton winning this one.

Can't believe Watford are 14/1 to win with some bookies

That's surely a far tougher game than the odds suggest, even with a fully fit Liverpool team firing on all cylinders

With Firmino likely out, Watford absolutely flying, and Liverpool's recent poor form this has all the makings of a shock if ever I've seen one
