There is a wealth of premium attacking options for Eliteserien Fantasy managers to choose from at the start of the 2019 season.

As already mentioned last week, there are more expensive options in the league than in 2018, with those who have impressed outside the top clubs getting price rises accordingly.

For that reason, it is more important than ever before to assess whether these premium players are worth paying the money for, especially the ones who play for defending champions Rosenborg.

At this point, it’s hard to say who will be starting up front for the 2018 title winners out of Nicklas Bendtner (11,5) and Alexander Søderlund (10,5). The fact is we are not likely to see them both together, so there are big question marks over both as Fantasy assets at the moment. Furthermore, Bendtner is lacking match fitness, and Søderlund is injured right now.

Pål Andre Helland (11,0), David Akintola (10,5) and Samuel Adegbenro (10,0) are competing for the two wide spots in the team. So far in pre-season matches, Helland and Akintola have been preferred, with Adegbenro working hard to adapt to the new style.

Akintola was one of the best players in the league last year before joining Rosenborg from Haugesund, along with manager Eirik Horneland. Given that he will be working with the same boss as before, Akintola already knows the new style at Rosenborg and should be the first choice right winger.

Helland is enjoying a decent pre-season so far, being moved from his usual right-wing position to the left. Returning players will know he is very injury prone, but he’s stayed fit for over half a year now.

In midfield, Rosenborg have signed Gjermund Åsen (9,0) from Tromsø, while Mike Jensen (8,5) has received a much kinder price than last season. So far in pre-season, Jensen has been deployed as an attacking midfielder playing behind the striker, although this has not yielded much success. If Horneland continues to use him in that role he might be a bargain, but only if he adapts to it in time for the start of the campaign.

In general, Rosenborg have looked pretty poor in pre-season, so I’m unsure at this stage if their premium options will be worth the investment. On the other hand, they are likely to have high ownership and given that they still have Fantasy potential, it is still advisable to consider them.

The Molde players are priced much higher than last year after their great run of form in the second half of the campaign. Magnus Wolff Eikrem (11,0) had an incredible season after joining midway through, scoring four goals, assisting nine and receiving 16 bonus points in just 12 starts and 985 minutes. He is joined by Eirik Ulland Andersen (10,0) and Eirik Hestad (9,5) as the premium midfielders from Molde.

Ulland Andersen, widely known as EUA among Fantasy players, has been one of the top midfield assets over the last two years playing for Strømsgodset. Last season was slightly disappointing for him with six goals and seven assists in 28 games, compared to 11 goals and eight assists in 26 outings in 2017.

If he can nail down a place in the starting XI I think he will still be Fantasy gold, but at the time of writing he has played just 10 minutes in pre-season and is lacking match fitness. That means Andersen is currently a massive doubt for Gameweek 1.

Another concern is that set-pieces are among both players’ strengths, which means they could potentially each other’s Fantasy appeal if they share duties.

With Erling Braut Håland joining Red Bull Salzburg, Leke James (10,5) doesn’t really have any quality competition for the striker spot. He started showing form towards the end of last season and has the potential to be one of the highest-scoring forwards in the league. However, James has struggled with a few injuries lately and had an average pre-season. Molde are also chasing another forward to add some competition up front, so that situation should be monitored.

Vålerenga also have a few heavy hitters in midfield and attack, which might be surprising to some. Matthias Vilhjalmson (9,5) joined from Rosenborg this winter, although he has struggled with injuries and missed pretty much all of last season. The 32-year-old has shown in previous years that he is a top striker at this level; if he can stay injury free, I believe he can be a very good pick for 2019. Vilhjalmson could also be on penalties. At 9,5, he does seem a little bit expensive at first glance but will be a very popular pick with the Double Gameweek early on.

In midfield for Vålerenga, we find Bård Finne (9,5) and Herolind Shala (8,5). Finne was a differential pick towards the end of last season, despite mainly featuring as a left winger while being classified as a forward. As we mentioned last week, he has now been shifted back into midfield on Eliteserien. Finne has both goals and assists in his locker, is most likely second choice for penalties right now and can also be used up front, which happened a couple of times last season. He has looked dangerous so far in pre-season, and with good starting fixtures in addition to the Double Gameweek, Finne is a solid pick.

Shala was another popular differential option towards the end of 2018, after joining relegated side Start in the summer. He was one of the top players in the league when played for Odd from 2011-2014, and both his returns and underlying stats from those seasons are very impressive. Shala’s history in Eliteserien and his good half-season for Start last year makes me believe he can be a very good pick for Fantasy managers and a big improvement for Vålerenga’s attack. He has already scored multiple times in pre-season and has provided assists too.

Out of the other premium forwards, I think Stabaæk’s Franck Boli (10,0) is the most exciting option to me, after an amazing second half of 2018. In the first half, he played mostly as a left winger but was moved up front when new manager Henning Berg was appointed. In the 16 Gameweeks of after the former Blackburn man took over, Boli scored an impressive 15 goals to become the Eliteserien’s 2018 top scorer despite scoring just twice in the first 14 games. Arguably the best striker in the league, he has also been scoring a lot in pre-season.s

Mos (9,5) has been consistently scoring goals in Eliteserien for a few different clubs, and last year was no different when he was finally given a chance. In his seven starts towards the end of the season, he scored seven goals, as well as scoring five goals in three games against top Eliteserien sides in Strømgodset’s run to the cup final.

It will be interesting to see if they can fit both Mos and Markus Pedersen (10,5) into the starting lineup. Pedersen was expected to miss the pre-season after being injured in October, but he is ahead of schedule and back in full training. There’s still doubt over whether Mos will find match fitness in time for the first Gameweek, but he won’t be far away.

However, there are a lot of question marks over Strømsgodset, as their squad looks fairly poor after the big stars in midfield left. They do have two great forwards at this level though, so they could find attacking form, it’s just hard to be sure. So far in pre-season, they haven’t impressed at all, despite Mos scoring a few goals.

Daouda Bamba (9,5) is also going to be a popular pick from the start of the season due to the early Double Gameweek for Brann. After a great first half of the season for Kristiansund, he never found his top form after moving south, despite ticking along and scoring a few goals. There are question marks over the quality of Brann’s front three, but in their current situation, they will rely heavily on Bamba to score the goals. Of note for those interested in signing him, he has been struggling with a back injury in pre-season and missed a few friendlies. With those concerns about his fitness, I’m a bit unsure if he’s a good pick for Gameweek 1.

Lillestrøm pair Arnor Smarason (9,0) and Thomas Lehne Olsen (9,0) do seem a bit expensive this season. That said, they were both, Smarason in particular, among the players with the highest point per game last season. If Lillestrøm do well and score goals, you can almost be sure that Smarason and Lehne Olsen are having a good season, as the former had particularly impressive underlying statistics last year and is also on penalties. However, it is worth noting Smarason has missed the last few friendlies for Lillestrøm, so could be a doubt for Gameweek 1.

I think this is pretty much my final draft, and I'm likely to go into GW1 with this team...

    Hansen & Barli
Wormgoor, Eggen Hedenstad, Nilsen, Glesnes, Haraldseid
Løkberg, Aursnes, Finne, Våge Nilsen, Valla Dønnem
    Boli, Bamba, Bye

    Bench order not settled yet.

As a newbie, Aursnes' less premium price tag put me off him. What sort of player is he & why have you gone for him? Thanks 🙂

9 goals and 6 assists last season, pretty nailed, even though he's had a price hike this year he fits nicely into my midfield. Molde have 2 x home games in GW2 too.

Thank you; how does Haugen (Molde) compare in terms on attacking threat and nailedness?

Well, he's a defender; so not really comparable in terms of attacking returns, but will be expected to play most games.

What's your chip plan for GW2?

Probably going to hold off on using a chip (Attack Attack) in GW2. I'll obviously have Bamba and Bye with 2 x fixtures, and would consider switching Boli out for a Molde forward, but with no concrete info on who is going to play up front between James and Amang, and their limited mins last season, I'm hesitant.

As a complete newbie, is it a decent strategy to load up on DGW players from week one, use a chip (not Rich Uncle) in DGW2, then use knowledge from the first two games to either make changes accordingly or wildcard early on from GW3?

I think there are probably different strategies that will work. This is the first year with Rich Uncle so we're all new to it!

We really won't know if RU or setting up for the DGW from the beginning is the better strategy until after, probably weeks after

I'm a novice too and am busy stocking up on DGW players. Those chips especially Attack Attack look enticing - only problem I can't yet get 3 forwards I like so Two Captains seems more likely.

Yeah that sounds good. The fixture swings, DGWs and BGWs never seem as dramatic as in FPL so wildcards can be used a bit more creatively. I feel like the Free Hit aspect of RU is being underlooked because of the unlimited budget

Rojas from TIL and Boniface from B/G are unknown quantities, new to the league but I think they might be the best for 6m or below. Not sure what Mjøndalen's striker situation is but either Liseth or Occean at 5.5m could be decent.

So I’ve signed up for Eliteserien created my team (with great difficulty as I only speak English so have no clue what most of the words meant xD).

Any tips or tricks or just a brief explanation off someone as to how it works I.e points scoring is it the same as FPL and the chips what do they do etc. I’ve never watched a single game of Eliteserien nor do I know a single thing about any of the teams or players. Who are the best players to pick and who to avoid? Also is there an option to change the app to English? I appreciate that sounds very ignorant as it’s the Norwegian league so apologies if that’s how it comes across I just have no clue.

Any replies would be greatly appreciated.

There is an English version.. that might help 😀

Same as FPL basically. Joe has just done a video on it so you could check that out. Youtube, Spotify, etc.

I played last year without knowing anything and did fairly well - it's a learning curve but for me I just stayed on these articles, asked questions and listened to other managers' advice, and read really carefully what Johannes and the other writers were saying

Still undecided on chips but I may end up settling on whoever I can afford. If I go RU2 then Eikrem with definitely be in that selection. Currently on Aursnes from the start but it doesn't seem like he's done much in pre-season other than get sent off.

Just starting to consider Knudtzon who will seemingly start the season on the left and could always feature up front (Leke James nowhere to be seen the last 2 games, Bolly and EUA yet to feature?)

Slightly worried about how EUA will impact on Hestad although it seems like he may not be rushed into the team

Good points. It's definitely worth keeping an eye on playing time and lineups. Haven't read more about Leke James other than he's struggling with an injury? That's kept me from including him on many drafts so far. Guess Eikrem is a good option, but it depends on how funds will be spent elsewhere. Have Knudtzon in my current draft. If he looks like being a good option for GW 1-3, that would solve a lot of problems!

Been some fitness concerns and he's not been all that anyway in pre-season. Molde are chasing another striker, linked with Ohi and Veton Berisha (previously at Viking). Both will put serious question marks around James' game time even if fit.

I don't like Aursnes as a pick. He play deep in the midfield.

            The strongest Molde midfield IMO

            James
Ulland Andersen - Eikrem - Hestad
            Aursnes - one more

As you see, I don't think Knudtzon is in the best XI. He isn't far off though, and there are major concerns about both the fitness of James and EUA (Ulland Andersen). Ulland Andersen has been injured through all of pre-season, and made his debut for Molde on Sunday vs. Rosenborg. He got just 10 minutes as a sub.

I am fairly sure Knudtzon will start in GW1 and see a lot of game time early on, either as a LW or a ST. He isn't 100% though, but will be great value if he gets a few starts. Might be worth the punt.

Molde are chasing another striker though. If they are successful and sign a good one, that does give them more options and makes Knudtzon a slightly weaker fantasy pick.

Cheers mate - bit stuck for Molde cover if i dont go for one of the two, but considering a GW2 rich uncle strategy so i can ensure i have the best options there. A punt on Knudtzon sounds a good shout unless a striker signs. Cheers! 🙂

If Park the Bus was still an option does everyone think it's a given that they'd play it in GW2? At least two each from Brann and Molde, then maybe a triple up or a bonus magnet from KBK or Vålerenga? At least its absence should mean a greater variety of strategies to start the season

If you listened to the FFS interview Jonas did with Joe he said one of the reasons they decided to get rid of the PTB chip was because of the early DGW this season as well. They don't want the 100+ point swings again

I would 100% play PTB with 2-3 Brann, 2 Molde and maybe Adekugbe.

Apologies if this post is deemed to be in the wrong place but I couldn't see an article on defenders.

Is there any reason to not get one of or a couple of the following defenders?

        Haakenstad (LSK) 4.5m
        Ulvestad (KBK) 5.0m / Nilsen (TIL) 5.0m

Their points per million and points per mach for last season are quite decent, with Ulvestad actually offering better points return per million than any higher points scoring defender in the league.

Obiouvsly players like Stolas, Wormgoor, Ruud and even Hedenstad are almost impossible to overlook due to their attacking output, but for cheaper options you'd be hard-pressed to find someone who offers such good value.

        1. JohnnyMagrinho
            6 years, 8 months ago

I will also add Aasbak (KBK) 4.5m to this list.

My worry is the clean sheet potential of the teams they are playing for. Right now I have a back three of Meling, Wormgoor and Adekugbe, with two 4.0s on the bench. Might upgrade one of them though, and Haakenstad can be a 4.5 option.

            1. JohnnyMagrinho
                6 years, 8 months ago

I suppose. But I think KBK are a safe enough bet to invest in a relatively cheap defender.

I'd agree with Stabaek though. They are a tad leaky.

At the moment I'm looking at:

Stolas, Ruud, Haraldseid, Ulvestad and R. Hernandez.

I suppose that might be a bit expensive and I'm sure I'll trim it down before next sunday but I think there's real potential in that defense.

I'm making the decision quit early on to go without Meling as I doubt he'll be able to perform as he did last season (a case of the Alonso's) and as everyone seems to be getting Wormgoor I'm put off him. I am somewhat concerned about Brann though. Can't see any reason as to why they'd suddenly become less sound at the back so that's definitely something of a risk. I'd like to think the offensive output of Ruud combined with the defensive-assuredness of Haugesund means I won't suffer too greatly without him.

Good points. For the price, I guess you could do a lot worse than picking a KBK defender. Depending on the GK issue, I guess a Mjøndalen def can be an option as well – even more so if they provide us with a playing 4.0 option.

Ruud and Haraldseid might find their way to may defence too, but it depends on how my midfield looks in the final draft, and more importantly how Meling's injury situation is by the deadline. If he's a doubt, I'll go without. Being a Rosenborg fan, it feels strange not having a single RBK asset in my team though…

I remember Haakenstad being benched at annoying times last season. Nilsen good going forward but slightly annoying price tag cos Tromsø can't defend, if Wangberg rediscovers previous form he could be better value. Ulvestad good pick but others will go McDermott or save money with Aasbak, should be worth having a KBK defender for the DGW at least.

I think there are better value at 5.0 than those mentioned, although Nilsen could be interesting. He's playing an advanced role at wing back, but in a poor defence.

Olsen Solberg (5.0) at Sandefjord is on pretty much every set piece, and he's pretty good at them as well. He can also be used OOP every now and then, although I expect him to mainly play defence.

Kind Mikalsen (4.5) at Lillestrøm might also be in with a shout. He used to have a lot of attacking threat, but we didn't see much of that last season.

Aasbak at 4.5 is a great one if nailed, but in pre-season he's been sharing game time with Sivertsen (4.0). In fact Sivertsen has been playing more than Aasbak, so unless Aasbak gets the nod in the final friendly I wouldn't risk it.

Is Knudtson nailed even if he doesnt start upfront? Or am i better off going with Aursnes?

I would argue that Aursnes could be a good set and forget option. I remember watching all the Molde highlights in 2017 and being shocked that he only had 1 goal and 4 assists considering how much he drove forward from midfield and took shots from 20 yards, I don't think it was a fluke that he got 9 goals and 6 assists last season. Reminds me of Ramsey a bit especially in 2013-14 where he was super efficient

I have not seen one yet, but I find betting odds are a good indication of likely outcome for any sporting event.
It would not take too much time to set up an excel spreadsheet based on probabilities but the benefit would be minimal imo.

Bookies are usually a good indicator but you'll find that the randomness of Eliteserien often catches them off guard.

KBK def not ideal, but Bamba looking a problem atm.

Nice 🙂 I went Bjornbak over Haraldseid due to the 4 goals last season.
That gives us six of the same players and I am really undecided about Bamba or it would be seven.

Oh that was draft 29. I'm onto draft 38 now...
Not really but I've moved to 3-5-2: Something like this (binning Bamba/Vilhjalmsson)

                                  McDermott
                                  Wormgoor Bjornbak Adekugbe (Teniste)
Eikrem Finne Shala Knudtzon BRA mid
                                  Ohi (Strand-Larsen)

Still very undecided on playing the RU chip in GW2.
                                  Any thoughts on chip tactics?

That's more like it. I've been on something similar:

                                    McD
Wormgoor - Teniste - Adekugbe (Haraldseid)
                                    Eikrem - Hestad - Finne (K) - Shala - Brynhildsen
                                    Ohi - Strand Larsen

4xMolde dream is alive for now but can't see it lasting for long. Hestad might be the one that makes way for a BRA mid (Gilli). With the extra money I'd probably upgrade fodder striker to someone with good fixtures in GW 3-4 (Børven/Karlsen?). Karlsen I could use in GW1 as well as I think Ranheim will score a few in that one.

I know money on the bench sucks but think it can help me delay the WC for a few weeks as I will have bench strength and free transfers to deal with the poor fixtures for BRA/VIF.

My plan for the double is two captains. Possibly on Eikrem/Ohi/Wormgoor.

I have Rønning (4.5m RAN fwd) as fodder for now. Been playing fair bit in pre-season while Karlsen injured. Whether that holds for a while though, or whether I can hold off transfers to keep 4 Molde, is another matter.

And Rolantsson atm. That could change too

I'm fairly sure we'll see Brynhildsen wide left, but will still be a top pick.

Same with Ingebrigtsen, as long as he's starting. I think he's more likely to play as a RW in a 343, but could also play up front if they go 352.

Thoughts on this? Done a fair bit of research and stats analysis but have not looked at preseason:

                          Barli (McDermott)

Ruud (V) / Wormgoor / Jonathan Tallas / Kvanda (Haraldseid)

                          Eikrem (C) / Shala / Aursnes (Kalludra / Rolantsson)

                          Vilhjalmsson / Bye / Boniface

Kvanda and Boniface can be downgraded but would prefer a fully playing squad.

Thanks, is Barli not necessary? I've heard the 4.0 Viking GK is starting?

So who’s been playing on the wings for Branne in pre season?

Komsoon on the Right and Rolantsson (aka Gilli) on the left. Petter Strand has also played a bit on the left without great success. Komsoon and Gilli are the ones i would think starts.

NB! Brann - Odd is the first match of the round and every line-up for the first match of a round is released 15 minutes before the deadline in fantasy, so you would know how starts from Brann in GW1 and make changes accordingly.

                          Hi all,
I’m new to the game. Is there a way of watching the matches here in England?
                          Thanks.

Hi everyone! I’m a student in decision-making and I’m doing a study on how Fantasy Premier League players make their decisions when choosing their team for a gameweek. As a passionate Fantasy Premier League player I’m really fascinated by this research topic, and it would mean the world to me if you’d be willing to take just a few minutes of your time to complete my survey. This should take no longer than 5 minutes! Thank you all so much!

Some new interesting transfers / OTW:

Ohi (9.0 FWD) 2017s breakout star has been sold from Stabæk to Molde and could become the bargain of the season if he nails the spot. Will probably start GW1 with Leke James (10.0 FWD) being a doubt. Ohi has immense potential and if he blossoms, and 9.0 could be a steal.

Thomas Amang (6.0 FWD) loaned out from Molde to Kristiansund. Amang was decent for Molde in preseason and start of the season last year, but is young and needs experience. Could be a good budget forward, especially with Kristiansund BK in DG2.

Sander Svendsen (8.0 MID) loaned out to Odd from Hammarby. Odd-Manager said he would play left wing. Was very good for Molde before they sold him to Hammarby in 2017. Rashani (8.0 MID) on the other wing probably a better player choice atm but Svendsen can become a must-have.
