My take on this Free Hit, if you're trying to make a big surge up the rankings, is that the best overall sword/differential strategy is to largely ignore the defences of the big three teams with the best fixtures (City, Chelsea, United) and go for broke on the attack for a few big, big margins.

However the fixtures may look on paper, there is always a good chance of one random goal ruining a clean sheet. I'd say the most likely scenario for options like Ederson, Laporte, Luiz, Smalling etc is around 8 points (1 x CS, 1 x 2-pointer). Those are returns that can be potentially matched by the likes of Crystal Palace and Brighton defence. There's at least some hope of the cheaper options roughly matching the expensive ones.

But you move up the pitch that changes. If you've got Mili / Jota / Batshuayi or you've forced in Kane despite poor fixtures compared to others, I'd suggest you're better off simply loading up on a wider spread of premium attacking assets like Higuain, Pedro, Rashford, Dilva, Bilva etc. Surely these are the true differentials who actually could score big hauls based on the teams they play for and the incredible fixtures they have.

The Chelsea defensive double-up goes wrong as soon as they concede a scrappy goal, but Higuain can easily score a hat-trick in either of those fixtures. He really can. Just watch Chelsea's game vs Fulham and see how close that was to a 4-goal mega haul for Higuain. Cardiff and Brighton are precisely the kinds of opposition he can score a heap of goals against without even playing that well.

And if City completely thrash both opponents, somebody other than Sterling and Aguero has to be involved in the goals. There are going to be assists and goals flying in all over the place and the likes of Dilva and Bilva could easily be part of the action. But if you go for your safe Laporte / Ederson you're putting all your eggs in a double CS basket and it can quickly go wrong. I'd so much rather be cheering for goals galore than biting my nails that City don't win 6-1 not 6-0.

That's why I've recently moved to a more budget defense. Doherty, Cathcart, Schlupp. Just took out Kane so Cathcart will likely become Jannmatt.

        Foster
        Azpilicuata - Duffy - Schlupp
        Sterling - Bilva - Pogba - Hazard
        Aguero - Rashford - Higuain

But looking at ways to upgrade Bilva to Dilva. It's a work in progress.

No. But he’s the best safest Chelsea defensive option imo. I’m advocating a focus on the attacks of Chelsea and City, but I’m not saying you can’t have a defender at all. My differential is going to be having Higuaín and Dilva instead of Luiz/Kepa and Laporte/Ederson. If Duffy, Schlupp, Foster can get close to matching those players then my attacking formation could really pay dividends. Basically I’m betting that none of these teams keep 2 clean sheets, but some of them win convincingly.

Agreed. But it's strange because it feels like people want differentials and are looking for them in random places when someone like Dilva is an amazing differential. Rested, first game vs Fulham, all the Free Hitters will have Aguero and Sterling with one of them captain, so I'm looking for ways to get something out of a massive City win. I don't think Ederson is that answer.

What's the most that can hurt you? 2 x City CS gets you 12 points for Ederson. You only need 1 attacking return to get close to that, but if you get multiple attacking returns you'll be laughing.

In the end though it's about how you want to play. City and Chelsea defensive assets are safe. I'd prefer to gamble on a couple of thrashings.

you´re spot on with your contemplation, but this going with Higuain and Dilva say instead of a double up Chelsea def and laporte/ederson, to me a double up from one of the cheaper options could be as lethal, for instance palace, a double there and one cs and that could really make a difference in combination with Hig and Dilva/Bilva?

I agree with you & I am in exactly the same predicament you described. Currently at 700k odd when my rank in last 2 seasons have been 30k odd, so want to finish within 100k (over-ambitious maybe). The Selling Value for my team is 102.0 so I know, I won't be beating most teams man for man, the only way is to go the differential route. I see Kane, Dilva and Alli as potential differentials that can propel me. Alli is sort of a half punt where you're hedging your bets by not bringing in Kane. Dilva is a player I want to have alongside Kane, unfortunately I can't unless I get rid of Hazard or Sterling, a punt which seems too far.

In your position with a lower than average team value I would target fixtures even more. Spurs have the least appealing fixtures of the lot. Even someone like Pedro can easily outscore Alli based on fixtures alone. Maybe a Palace defensive double up plus Batshuayi. Duffy for goal threat. Personally don’t think Kane is the answer but yes he is a major differential and it could work.

I understand the concern about my TV, but going Alli is in best case scenario going to get me 16 points, the ceiling with Kane is much higher (same logic as your City defender vs attacker). Also Pedro, Mili & Townsend don't look like the answers I'm searching for at 700k. I'd rather have a real go at 100k & finish outside 1 million than play a balanced team & end up at 400k. I've been doing that all season.

This game is all about IFs and predicitions...

You can be either on safe side of IFs and take 10-20pts or be on risky side and increase your points ceilings.

Its almost season end, so unless you have MLs to deal with, going all out for better rank is probably the right way to move forward

What's safe and what's risky though? It can be expressed both ways - based on the OP that all it takes is one random goal to ruin a CS, picking premium defenders or going 5 at the back can hardly be considered safe 😉

We wouldn’t get far if we didn’t try to predict outcomes in this game. Essentially that is the game in a nutshell. I know it’s a big IF, but the thing about a clean sheet is that it will only ever be a ckean sheet no matter dominant the winning team is. Your City CS is matched exactly another manager’s Palace CS. However, a 3-6 goal thrashing when you have an attacking double or triple up is potentially very lucrative. The more City and Chelsea win by, they more points available. So you’re really truly backing in the fixture. But a CS can be wiped in a split second, no matter how the match played out as a whole.

If you don’t believe Higuaín for example can score back to back braces against these opponents in 3-1 wins where both CS are wiped out, then this strategy is not for you. But if you think that could happen, Higuaín is a much bigger sword than a second Chelsea defender imo.

Suppose you have jota (6.1) and I have Luiz (5.9) .

Hota starts one match and comes off the bench in second .

      That's 3 points.

And my Luiz played both the match, let's just say he gets one cs and scores a goal.

That'll make 14 without bonus . 11 more than the 'attacker'

All you are saying is IFs and BUTs.

      Anything and everything can happen.

I don’t disagree with that. The likes of Jota is who I’m trying to avoid. Getting players like Foster, Duffy, Schlupp allows me to triple up on City attack and double up on Chelsea attack, and ignore the Jotas. I also have Azpilicueta so I’m not saying you shouldn’t have a premium defender, just that budget options can free up the funds you need to attack the fixtures from a goal scoring perspective.

I’m looking for nailed on players in both matches. That’s a way to try to maximise points as well. Ederson is pretty much guaranteed two starts. Cannot say that for any other city IMO. The ceiling is lower then attacking players sure but he could easily match either Silva as well - neither have been that explosive this year.

        On the subject of nailedness.
        Most nailed players in order based on minutes played;
(All players, Double gameweekers in CAPS)

        Forwards)
        MITROVIC - 2740
        JIMENEZ - 2464
        King - 2395
        Perez - 2358
        ZAHA - 2321
        (KANE - 7th, DEENEY - 9th, AGUERO - 15th)

        Midfielders)
        Ndidi - 2758
MILIVOJEVIC - 2700 (every minute possible)
        Cork - 2682
        KANTE - 2678
        Salah - 2643
        (TOWNSEND - 9th, HAZARD - 15th)

        Defenders)
        Mee - 2790
        Ake - 2781
        Van Dijk - 2754
AZPILICUETA - 2700 (every minute possible)
COADY - 2700 (every minute possible)
        (PVA - 6th, RUDIGER - 13th, DOHERTY - 14th, D.LUIZ - 15th)

What I take from this is that Jimenez is probably much safer than people think as he is crucial to Wolves' attacking set up. Defence wise Doherty looks to be as safe/unsafe as the two Chelsea CBs, and Forwards in general seem to more secure than their midfielder counterparts (e.g. Aguero over Sterling).

I'm inclined to agree about Jiminez at least, and given his consistency and being Wolves focal point, I think he's worth keeping even if he only gets one full match + a second cameo. But if Zaha is fit, I will be tempted to switch.

i don't understand your reasoning. the observation the a clean sheet an be `ruined by one random goal' is irrelevant. the fact is that chelsea and man city both have roughly 50% chance of keeping a clean sheet in each match, which means that the expected returns (and value) of the defenders from those teams that are likely to play twice is very high.

If you are chasing, this and going ultra-defence heavy are the only 2 options really. I would say though it's a bit like going into the back 9 of a major golf championship 3 shots behind and just going for the pin every hole. The usual outcome is though this guy knocks it in the water a couple of times and falls further behind while the guy leading who plays dullard to the centre of the green every hole wins.

Then you just had to go and ruin everything -4 with your logic and reasoning that utterly appeals to me! I really thought this IB was going to present no headaches of any merit, I was praying for an injury to a template player just to shake things up, but I never foresaw this as what would shake things up for me! I guess I'll be panic confirming a team at 11:29 now and hoping I don't get pangs of regret for either sticking to my guns or switching to this strategy. Well played sir!

Think of it this way - how much more likely is a Chelsea CS than a Palace or Brighton CS? Compare that to how much more likely Chelsea is to score multiple goals vs Cardiff than another team is in a harder fixture.

It’s not that the premium defenders can’t or won’t get a CS, it’s that even if they do they won’t necessarily outscore cheaper defenders by a significant margin. One goal from Duffy and a goal conceded by City suddenly makes Laporte a waste of money. A CS and save points for Foster makes Kepa unnecessary regardless of what Kepa does.

So what you really want from those amazing fixtures is a goal fest, not a CS.

    18. MMN

This is totally ignoring bonus points/attacking returns for the likes of Luiz/Laporte/Smalling/Azpil.

A couple of clean sheets is not always 12 points. One clean sheet is often a 9 pointer on its own.

And the main issue with this is that most people are expecting Giroud and Bilva/Fernandinho/KDB to get a game and so Dilva and Higuain may likely be reduced to one start. If they were likely to start both they’d be in almost everyone’s teams.

And one return isn’t necessarily 12 points. Especially if the games are going to turn out like the high scoring goal-fests you’re hoping for. One assist and a cameo could easily mean 6 points for Silva/Higuain considering 1 assist will not accrue any bonus in a high scoring game. Even a goal and a cameo could get 8/7 points in a high scoring first game.

All fair points. My argument is essentially that the attacking team has the higher ceiling if the games go the way many hope and expect them to. For example, we're all pretty much hanging our hats on Aguero and Sterling to the extent that both could score back to back hat-tricks and you wouldn't even gain anything on other Free Hitters. But if they do happen to score 10 goals over two games, wouldn't you want another piece of that attacking pie? Just as Dilva is no guarantee of two starts, neither is Laporte. And no City defender or keeper is getting bonus points in those games unless the get attacking returns. Laporte has 4 bonus points for the season and 3 of them came in the game he scored. Ederson has 47 saves and 4 bonus points. If City beat Fulham 6-1 and Dilva has a goal plus 2 assists and some bonus points, you're sitting there thinking how you wish you had considered this very likely thrashing in more depth.

I guess the bonus points and attacking returns is more relevant with Luiz.

I do agree that 3rd City spot is worth thinking about and it will go down to Friday for me after I have a look at minutes played over the internationals. I agree that Laporte's ceiling is not too high but do check out how many times Dilva has had double digits this season too.

Yeh granted he'll only play at CB but whilst it's a positive that Schlupp can play in midfield, with that comes increased competition for his spot

If you can get a good team out without any risks/enablers then yh he's worth it. But not if you have poor TV and damages team. Guess that's more is he worth it kinda thing. If essential without money aspect I'd say no

After reading an article yesterday about historically defenders being the best picks for DGWs I've been naughty and come up with a 532.

It just happens to be exact money, it must be fate. What do you think?

    Kepa
    Walker Azpi Lindelof Duffy Schlupp
    Hazard Sterling Pogba
    Kane Aguero

    1. Tsparkes10
      • 5 Years

Walker is an awful pick imo. Mid and attack looks good but I thought of a 343 earlier. Recently posted... Just depends on your gut hehr

      1. Phil's Stamps
        • 13 Years
        5 years, 1 month ago

        My thinking with Walker:
        1. Article suggests he's the most nailed City defender.
        2. More attacking than Laporte.
        3. Differential, most will go with Laporte.
        4. Good defensive options are scarce this gw so not really anywhere else to spend the 0.5 in a back 5 if I go with Laporte.

Feels template for a FH but i am getting happy with it as it squeezes the key players. It is not lost on me that deulofeu is risky but a cheap enabler at 5.6 with upside imo:

    Ederson
    Luiz Lindelof Schlupp
    Sterling Hazard Pogba Mili Deulofeu
    Kun (c) Kane

Bench: nobody but dont need it

Leaning towards the latter at the moment as Rashford is playing on the wing and negatively oop.
