With the start of a new Premier League season moving ever closer, we switch our focus to Sky Sports Fantasy Football.

For the uninitiated, we will go over the basics of the game in the article below.

How do I play?

Just like in Fantasy Premier League, managers select a team of players that will either earn you attacking, defensive or bonus points in an attempt to score more than your friends, colleagues and/or the rest of the world. However, this not a squad-based game: you choose simply a starting XI and do not have a bench.

The budget, like in FPL, is £100m. There is no quota for players from the same club, however.

Game Weeks run from Friday to Thursday with managers allowed transfers in between Match Days, allowing the maximisation of potential points by bringing in an asset yet to play for one who has already been involved that week.

Instead of one free switch per Game Week as per FPL, the Sky Sports game allocates 40 transfers that can be used at any time during the season – with a limit of five in one Game Week – creating the need for a more long-term strategy.

‘Overhauls’ (the equivalent of Wildcards) are also available in Sky Sports, with two being allocated every season. The first one becomes available to use following the completion of Game Week 4 and remains an option until the deadline for Game Week 6. The dates for the second one will be announced in due course.

In the Sky Sports game, you can name more than one captain in a Game Week so long as the players in question are in action on different days. For example, if there were fixtures on Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday in any given Game Week, a Sky Sports Fantasy manager could name a different skipper on each of those Match Days, providing they did so before that day’s deadline. Managers can also schedule their captains ahead of a Game Week, too.

How do you score points?

The points structure is largely similar to FPL in Sky Sports Fantasy but tends to award more points for the actions mentioned below.

ActionPoints scored
Starting XI2
Substitution appearance1
Goal scored by a goalkeeper/defender7
Goal scored by a midfielder6
Goal scored by a striker5
Goal assist3
Clean sheet by a goalkeeper (must play 60+ mins)7
Clean sheet by a defender (must play 60+ mins)5
A penalty save by a goalkeeper5
Man of the Match3

Can My Team Lose Points?

Unfortunately, just like in FPL there are a few ways to lose points too.

ActionPoints scored
Missing a penalty-3
Every goal conceded from the second goal onwards-1
Each yellow card-1
Each red card-3
Each own goal-2

How do Bonus Points work?

Just like in FPL, there are additional points on offer for other events in matches – although the structure is slightly different, as you will see below.

There have been some changes from last season, with fewer shots on target and saves needed to garner points.

Tier 1 Action
Points scored
3 saves made (GK only)2
4 tackles won 2
60 completed passes 2
2 shots on target2
Tier 2 Action
Points scored
5+ saves made (GK only)3
5+ tackles won 3
70+ completed passes3
3+ shots on target3

How do I play against my friends?

There are a number of different ways to compete against others in the Sky Sports game. You can create or join a Free League with your friends and colleagues but there are ways to win money too.

Sky Sports can actually administer your money league for you to avoid any awkwardness post-season. You can choose the entry fee (either £2, £5, £10 or £20 per person) and the prize structure beforehand and Sky Sports will take care of the rest.

Does anyone remember what teams ended well 2 seasons ago?

Can someone pls explain the appeal of Deulofeu and Jota?
If you take a point per goal & per clean sheet off their totals from last year they look quite poor value.
Jota may continue to benefit from the formation change, but also has the extra euro fixtures and that never turns out well.
I’m trying to avoid a 6.5F if I can help it - but doubt I can - so then it’s got to be King surely?

    1. conorbon
      • 13 Years
      7 years, 15 days ago

I haven’t considered either tbh. I’m avoiding all Wolves as I’m worried Europa League could hit them hard especially as they don’t have the biggest squad.

    2. Netley Lucas
      • 11 Years
      7 years, 15 days ago

I'll have a go on Jota. In the 18 games he partnered Jim up top he got 14 attacking returns. I'm led to believe that after adjusting positions, this equates to around 5.1ppm as a forward in FPL.

      Deu will be fixtures.

The game is all a bit shite when you are forced to buy non playing players is it not just to afford 2 or 3 premium? FPL should change the game to picking 12 plus a sub GK if they've got those tendencies.

    1. The Bandit
      • 15 Years

I think most people seem agreed that the pricing is good. Nobody is forcing you to get non playing players. Maybe you want it to be easier?

    2. Netley Lucas
      • 11 Years
      7 years, 15 days ago

You assume a free bench will not have starters or back-ups to what you have. I'm more positive, I think we may get a proper 4 def, we will get a 4.5 mid, 4.5 striker as sub and we have a couple of 8.5 keeper & back-up I think. That's not bad tbh, if we get the 4 def.

    3. Business Cat
      • Fantasy Football Scout Member
      • 11 Years

Pricing is good on the whole.

I don't particularly like the fact you need to spend 6m on a striker to get a somewhat nailed player.

There's playinfg 4.5m mids and usually a playing 4m defender to go at, but there's hardly ever anything in the lowest price ranges up front

Makes 4-5-1 not really viable unless you're happy with 2 non-playing bench players

    4. Limited & Mediocre Mana…

Prob after his points total last year. But he did miss a month due to injury. I had him at 8.5m in 2017/2018 and he was a real bargain. I really like him prob the best player in the league outside the top 2 teams, imo of course.

He’s always looked lively enough when I’ve watched him in Europa to be fair

I like Delphino as well for that price but he will still have to play back up to Gomes and Gueye

I'm finding it tempting to go without City attack. This would mean Salah captain most weeks, but I see Vardy as an option as well. Thoughts?

I'm only really interested in Sterling, possibly Kun. But having two 12M players in my team means one of them is bad value each gw.

I’m not keen on that idea personally. Explosive points potential and high ownership

It's a risk indeed, but enables the perfect gk+defence imo.

I’m looking to play sky for the first time this year and it’s a cash league nonetheless...

Does anyone know of any resources either on here on or externally with specific tips and strategies?

The extra points for tackles and passes are different to FPL and not sure how much note I should take or those for example...

Any advice would be much appreciated

    Cheers all

I'm not sure I can post it here but there's a great pod called "intro to sky for Fpl players".

Even if you could post just one nugget of advice on here if you’ve played it before it would be great

Feel like I’m playing catch up big time haha

Nothing concrete atm. Yarmo has the number 7 and the quality but still doubts over ability to play 90. I am personally now avoiding until a couple weeks in

Theres alot of talk about Diop, potential attacking returns or just nailed? How was your defensive record anyway?

Worst in league for xGC, avoid our defence unless you have a sweet rotation, but even then expect to be upset

Reid expected to be first choice for West Ham? Quality CB for 4.0 would be ideal

Appreciate any opinions on whether I should invest more up top. It feels pretty good, but in the past I've generally gone with a Kane or Aguero, so not sure.
