With the start of a new Premier League season moving ever closer, we switch our focus to Sky Sports Fantasy Football.

For the uninitiated, we will go over the basics of the game in the article below.

How do I play?

Just like in Fantasy Premier League, managers select a team of players that will either earn you attacking, defensive or bonus points in an attempt to score more than your friends, colleagues and/or the rest of the world. However, this not a squad-based game: you choose simply a starting XI and do not have a bench.

The budget, like in FPL, is £100m. There is no quota for players from the same club, however.

Game Weeks run from Friday to Thursday with managers allowed transfers in between Match Days, allowing the maximisation of potential points by bringing in an asset yet to play for one who has already been involved that week.

Instead of one free switch per Game Week as per FPL, the Sky Sports game allocates 40 transfers that can be used at any time during the season – with a limit of five in one Game Week – creating the need for a more long-term strategy.

‘Overhauls’ (the equivalent of Wildcards) are also available in Sky Sports, with two being allocated every season. The first one becomes available to use following the completion of Game Week 4 and remains an option until the deadline for Game Week 6. The dates for the second one will be announced in due course.

In the Sky Sports game, you can name more than one captain in a Game Week so long as the players in question are in action on different days. For example, if there were fixtures on Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday in any given Game Week, a Sky Sports Fantasy manager could name a different skipper on each of those Match Days, providing they did so before that day’s deadline. Managers can also schedule their captains ahead of a Game Week, too.

How do you score points?

The points structure is largely similar to FPL in Sky Sports Fantasy but tends to award more points for the actions mentioned below.

ActionPoints scored
Starting XI2
Substitution appearance1
Goal scored by a goalkeeper/defender7
Goal scored by a midfielder6
Goal scored by a striker5
Goal assist3
Clean sheet by a goalkeeper (must play 60+ mins)7
Clean sheet by a defender (must play 60+ mins)5
A penalty save by a goalkeeper5
Man of the Match3

Can My Team Lose Points?

Unfortunately, just like in FPL there are a few ways to lose points too.

ActionPoints scored
Missing a penalty-3
Every goal conceded from the second goal onwards-1
Each yellow card-1
Each red card-3
Each own goal-2

How do Bonus Points work?

Just like in FPL, there are additional points on offer for other events in matches – although the structure is slightly different, as you will see below.

There have been some changes from last season, with fewer shots on target and saves needed to garner points.

Tier 1 Action
Points scored
3 saves made (GK only)2
4 tackles won 2
60 completed passes 2
2 shots on target2
Tier 2 Action
Points scored
5+ saves made (GK only)3
5+ tackles won 3
70+ completed passes3
3+ shots on target3

How do I play against my friends?

There are a number of different ways to compete against others in the Sky Sports game. You can create or join a Free League with your friends and colleagues but there are ways to win money too.

Sky Sports can actually administer your money league for you to avoid any awkwardness post-season. You can choose the entry fee (either £2, £5, £10 or £20 per person) and the prize structure beforehand and Sky Sports will take care of the rest.

What you thinking you’ll look like for GW1 in that case? Initially I thought the fixtures were poo but it could be quite solid after all

Watford looks sexy. But Bournemouth: king, Wilson and Fraser looks essential for first 2

I read the Wilson v King article but I’m none the wiser on who will actually be better value. Will Wilson justify the £8m price tag?

Well arguably if King matches/betters his score initially he’s better value. 1.5 better to be exact.

No actually that would only be if he matches it and other players in other positions offer the exact same extra value in their spots to their counterparts

We will see. He has expressed his desire to leave but ndombele should relieve some responsibility. All ndombele is doing is a straight swap for sissoko so in reality not that much will really change

True, but no club has come in for him as of yet. United should be all over him. I have 9m to spend on a midfielder and already have KDB. Pogba, Siggy maybe.

That’s a great team and close to my thoughts at the moment. Laporte and Ryan to Ederson and Dunk saves 0.5m and would allow VvD to Robbo or PEREZ to Zaha?

Jota to Delu/Deeney for opening fix?

Currently sitting on this one. Fairly template (I think).

    Lloris
    TAA - Digne - Dunk (Bednarek - £4m)
Salah - Sigurdsson - Fraser - Perez (Stephens)
    Kane - Wilson - Deulofeu

Any thoughts? I know the glaring omission is Man City assets but I can't seem to shoehorn Sterling in without messing the balance of the team.

    1. Bartowski
      • 15 Years
      7 years, 15 days ago

Tis a nice team I think the extra .5 that Coleman makes him a good option. Not sure about so much since the position change. You could possibly go 442 by downgrading Wilson to king dig to col and delevto a 4.5 to try and shoehorn sterling in.

      1. Left Peg
        • 13 Years

I think the challenge is flexibility. I'm happy to keep Kane as it shouldn't be a massive struggle to get in Aubameyang or Aguero should they start banging them in. I think I'll have to live without Sterling.

I had another version which did:

        Kane -> Vardy
        Fraser -> De Bruyne

        1. Bartowski
          • 15 Years

De Bruyne is a bit of a quandary at this stage. I think Fraser is a good option but will be checking man city friendlies.

Not the best, your going to have to lose one of your big guns. Rest of the team is very poor. Donk and Hayden I wouldn't expect more than 2 PTS each game. Zappa, Gibson, Wickham all unlikely to play much.

Yep. I think I’ll be holding off on Kane for now to get a more balanced team.

Salah, Sterling + 2*LFC defence is essential in my eyes to start with.

I've gone Kane over Sterling, Extra 1m and has the added bonus of penalties. I think KDB could easily make up for most of the lost Sterling points at 2.5m cheaper

In Zappacosta and Hayden, you've got 5 bench players and will be playing 2 each week.

Pick one to dowgrade and spread the money

5-3-2 is the way to go for that:

      4.5
      TAA/Robbo | VVD | 6.0 | 5.5 | 4.5
      Salah | Sterling | 6.5
      Kane | 6.5

Where on earth would Delph fit in at Everton? They're pretty well stocked in central midfield. Is there a vacancy at left back? 😉

I thought the same. Seems like an odd signing, unless Gueye is off to PSG? If not, and they continue with a 4-2-3-1, it'll be Gueye, Gomes, Schneiderlin, Davies and Delph fighting it out for 2 places.

Also rumours that Everton will be in for Townsend. That would put a new twist on the Zaha saga.

Feels like Silva is thinking like Pellegrini and aiming for two first choices in every position - bar cf where they have none!

Tell me why that matters when he played all 38 games last season and garnered +180 fpl points by scoring 7 goals and providing 14 assists. Bournemouth face only two top 6 teams in their first 10 gws.

    Button, Kelly, El Mohamady, Noble

Just changed it up from a 452 to 343. Not sure if I like this better. Probably not with having Dedoncker and El Mohamady as regular players. If I went with this, I would probably WC after week 2

I know this might sound like a bizarre stat to judge things on but has anyone looked at how players perform dependent on weather temperature?

Are there some players who can slog through games despite of weather and others who don’t have the will to slog it out when it is frosty / cold?

Quite a few worth monitoring in pre season - Grealish, Trossard, Hudson-Odoi when fit, possibly Barkley if he's starting, Townsend, Barnes, Buendia, Ward-Prowse, Yarmolenko if he's up to speed.

Will WC on 3 so what do u think of this plan, will maximise points to begin as I understand what the key is this year:

    GW1:
    Pope (SOU)

TAA (NOR) VVD (NOR) Digne (cpl) Zinchenko (whu)

Salah (NOR, C) Fraser (SHU) Zaha (EVE)

Auba (new) Wilson (SHU) King (SHU)

    Farhmann Norwood Dendoncker Kelly

    Then in GW2

    Fahrmann (NEW)

TAA (sou) VVD (sou) Digne (WAT)

Salah (sou) Fraser (avl) Zaha (shu) Norwood (CPL)

Auba (BUR, C) Wilson (avl) King (avl)

    Pope Zinchenko Dendoncker Kelly

Looks good. Love the Aubameyang pick, Bournemouth triple up not so much but I can see why you'd do it if planning an early WC. Also, Zinchenko over Norwood GW2.

Thank you, yeah probably but I do like the look of Norwood in that fixture. Likely scenario is I should transfer him out maybe for Jorginho (LEI) or play Zinchenko/get anothe 5.5m def. what don’t I fancy about those bournemouth attackers with the pretty fixtures?

Makes absolute sense. How many of us pick a long term team only to change it after 2/3 gamesweeks. Better to pick a team for 2 gamesweeks like you have. Your pick's are V good too. Very similar to my team actually.

Yeah there is nothing we can do from now until the start of the season to tell who will actually do well. Form over the first couple will tell us that, there is a big fixture shift after first couple too so seems decent to capitalise on that for me. Plus players like son/CHO etc arrive into the fray after that so I think it could be better to defer responsibility until then
