Liverpool and West Ham began their pre-season campaign on Thursday with mixed implications for Fantasy Premier League managers.

Obviously, we are still at the early stage of summer friendlies so a lot of our observations should be taken with a pinch of salt, to some extent.

However, both of Thursday’s matches threw up talking points that we have to make sure we stay on top of.

Tranmere Rovers 0-6 Liverpool

Divock Origi (right) will be on plenty of Fantasy radars this summer

Goals: Nathaniel Clyne, Rhian Brewster x2, Curtis Jones, Divock Origi (£5.5m), Bobby Duncan

Assists: Brewster, Harry Wilson, James Milner (£5.5m), Ben Woodburn, Paul Glatzel

Jurgen Klopp mostly used the kids as his side began their pre-season campaign with a 6-0 win at Tranmere, a match that featured two Liverpool teams getting 45 minutes each.

However, there were still eight senior players with FPL prices who were involved for the Reds.

Divock Origi (£5.5m) has already been discussed as a potential budget differential for the start of the season as Sadio Mané‘s (£11.5m) involvement at the African Cup of Nations goes on.

The Belgian forward was used as the centre-forward in a front-three for the second 45 minutes and came away with a goal to his name.

He was also credited with his ability to hold the ball up for his wider colleagues.

“Sadio Mané is in the semi-finals [of the AFCON], so that means he has two more games for sure and will come [back] late.” – Jurgen Klopp

With Mané’s Senegal team now the favourites to win the African Cup of Nations, there is definitely a chance that Origi may have to come into the team for him either in the Community Shield or in Gameweek 1.

Furthermore, Roberto Firmino (£9.5m) is also expected back late after his Copa America involvement, as is Mohamed Salah (£12.5m), although their international duty is already over.

“The Brazilians have finally finished their 30-month season, exactly like Mo, and they will come but we will not have a pre-season together, we will only have a week before we start with the games. Tonight it looked like we can find some solutions” – Jurgen Klopp

Either way, Origi will be using pre-season to stake a claim for a place in the Liverpool starting XI so we should continue to keep an eye on him.

Against Tranmere, Joe Gomez (£5.5m) and Joel Matip (£5.5m) both played but not together. One was used in each half, the England international in the first and Cameroon defender Matip in the second.

Both centre-backs have the potential to offer a budget route into the Liverpool defence alongside Virgil van Dijk (£6.5m) this season but at this early stage, it is still unclear which it will be.

Dejan Lovren (£5.5m) did not get any minutes although there is plenty of the pre-season campaign left to play.

Fabinho (£5.5m), Adam Lallana (£6.0m), Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain (£6.5m) and James Milner (£5.5m) were also treated to 45 minutes against Tranmere, the latter claiming an assist.

These players are all likely to be gunning for a place in the starting XI for Gameweek 1, with a particular interest in Oxlade-Chamberlain as he makes his return from injury.

Several options in the central midfield position may struggle to be fit for the start of the new campaign.

Naby Keita‘s (£6.0m) Guinea were knocked out in the second round but the central midfielder also aggravated an adductor injury whilst in Egypt.

Meanwhile, Xherdan Shaqiri (£6.5m) is out for “a while” according to Jurgen Klopp.

Liverpool first-half XI (4-3-3): Mignolet; Larouci, Gomez, Phillips, Clyne; Milner, Lallana, Oxlade-Chamberlain; Kent, Brewster, Wilson.

Liverpool second-half XI (4-3-3): Jaros; A Lewis, Matip, Johnston, Hoever; Fabinho, C Jones, Woodburn; Glatzel (Atherton 78′), Origi, Duncan

SCR Altach 2-3 West Ham United

Manuel Pellegrini has a vacancy up front at West Ham and Fantasy managers will be keen to know who will fill it

Goals: Carlos Sánchez (£4.5m), Michail Antonio (£7.0m), Issa Diop (£4.5m)

Assists: Robert Snodgrass (£5.5m), Mark Noble (£5.0m), Jack Wilshere (£5.0m)

There is keen interest in who will occupy the number one centre-forward slot at West Ham this season in the wake of Marko Arnautovic’s departure.

Michail Antonio (£7.0m) drew first blood in the race to replace the Austrian as the Hammers began their pre-season campaign in Arnautovic’s homeland.

The FPL midfielder was deployed up front in a 4-2-3-1 formation against SCR Altach and also found the back of the net too.

After Carlos Sánchez (£4.5m) had headed home a Robert Snodgrass (£5.5m) corner, Antonio made it 2-0 with a smart run to fool the Altach defence.

Mark Noble (£5.0m) played a long ball from deep to the pacey attacker, who beat the offside trap, rounded the goalkeeper and slotted home.

Obviously, it is early days in West Ham’s pre-season campaign so we certainly don’t want to encourage interest in Antonio based off one outing.

But is worth making ourselves aware that Javier ‘Chicharito’ Hernández (£6.0m) may have to hold off competition from him to claim the centre-forward role from him this summer.

Manuel Pellegrini largely went for the approach of two teams per half, making eight changes at half-time.

Just three players were treated to more than an hour of football in Austria.

One of those was new goalkeeper Roberto (£4.5m) who played 76 minutes before being replaced by fellow new recruit David Martin.

Lukasz Fabianski (£5.0m) was one of six players priced up by FPL to have no involvement in the game.

New signing Pablo Fornals (£6.5m) was one of them, while Fabian Balbuena‘s (£4.5m) involvement with Paraguay at the Copa America has delayed his return to the West Ham camp and Arthur Masuaku (£4.5m) is on leave following DR Congo’s elimination from the African Cup of Nations in the second round.

Aaron Cresswell (£5.0m) was left out of the matchday squad for precautionary reasons, while Xande Silva (£4.5m) also played no part.

“It was a good workout. We worked well physically but we conceded two goals, which was too much, but we won, which is the most important thing.” – Issa Diop

“I’m happy to score but obviously it was just a friendly game, so to get a goal is not very important, but we always want to win every game, so of course I am happy about this goal.” – Issa Diop

West Ham XI (4-2-3-1): Roberto (Martin 76′); Fredericks (Zabaleta 45′), Diop (Rice 68′), Ogbonna (Reid 45′), Johnson (Byram 68′); Sanchez (Obiang 45′), Noble (Cullen 45′); Snodgrass (Yarmolenko 45′), Lanzini (Wilshere 45′), Felipe Anderson (Diangana 45′); Antonio (Chicharito 46).

Im just setting up my first draft, just wondering why so many people as taking KDB over sterling? is there a specific stat or something that are tempting people ? Sorry if I'm a bit late to the party.

Assuming the thinking is KDB is back from an injury ravaged last season, should be pretty nailed, could be a creative force and 2.5m cheaper.

Look at the two seasons before last. He's consistently a 200pt assist machine, for 2.5m less than Sterling.

Easier to "downgrade" Sterling to KDB than doing the same to Salah, Mane/Firmino just aren't anywhere near as enticing as KDB is

The thinking is if they have Salah they wont be capping Sterling very much, which makes him less valuable.

So many good Midfield options this season, haven’t moved from 3 5 2 formation..

Re watched Marks meet the manager sold it even more

    Currently on

    Pope 4.0

    TAA Laporte Digne Diop 4.0

    Zaha Perez Salah Siggy Sterling

    King Jota 4.5

    Anyone else playing this formation?

      Currently on 5 mids myself.

Can see the argument for 5 at the back this year but happy to go with 3 big hitters there personally.

        Same,

I prefer to play attackers, always have..

Martial Groß Redmond Maddison Ozil Moura Pulisic
        Fraser Anderson Etc..

        So many potentially good options

Again, arguably easier to pick out the defenders who'll score high over the course but it's really going to test players patience if they go with 5.

Agree there are options (you're bananas for listing Ozil mind). Tough to pick the right ones obviously but easy to switch between as they emerge.

Early days but toying with the idea. But i like to have double pool def, city def and a mid But not sterling. Going bilva and then have a viable choice up front eho can interchange whenever it needs. Usually i like to spread fubds around to have decent bench but not everyones liking.

Like it. Yep, my favourite formation in order to get in attacking mids. Have a 9 of the same players as you. Think it is a pretty flexible structure (with a couple of transfers) to jump on any in form player too.

Haven't touched this for ages now. I like the balance. Just not sure on KdB & Kane or my original picks of Sterling & Vardy. Obviously keeping an eye on the two 6.0m mids. Daniel James one to watch too.

I just worry for teams that don't have one of Sterling or Kun in them.

Personally, I think it's absolute FPL suicide to omit at least one of those two in anyone's team.

I like Kane but I want Sterling and Salah and the reality is that I will captain one of them every week, so Kane's value is wasted in that instance.

This is why I'm avoiding the premium strikers this season.

I think he is key to the system creatively and links well with Maddison and Vardy. Gray is too wasteful for that LW spot, he will be Pérez’s back up at RW if anything in the direct role imo. LW reserved for Barnes and Maddison

Albrighton is crap. I think he's better than Gray and in his first few months at the top level he was excellent and will only get better. End product will come. I'm not mad on him either but we are talking 6m mids. He's competing with clownsend here.

Gray has no chance of ousting H. Barnes. Albrighton may get the "big" games due to his defensive ouput. I expect his G+A to increase a lot this season too. That said, not starting with him and I wouldn't undergo any circumstances.

    Heaton
    TAA VVD Digne Zinchencko
    Salah KDB Sigurdsson Lucas
    Vardy King

Button Kelly Dendoncker Greenwood 0.5m ITB

Lucas is an early season punt. Like the look of it, just lack of second captain option putting me off, I don't think perma captain works in reality.

He's their X factor. The danger man. The Henry Rollins in a team full of Beethoven's. City stretch teams all over the place with their passing and razza ruthlessly exploits it.

Yep. That's my point. I would rather go for a midfield of 3 players including Sterling and Salah with Fraser (probably switching to Siggy after the first 2 GW's) and also have Jota in my team, along with forwards King and Jimenez (the highest bought player who could hurt rankings of those without him if he starts well).

I don't like such a cheap frontline. Just makes it more difficult to bring in expensive forwards which you'll inevitably want to. I've gone with Vardy, Wilson, jota with Salah, kdb, bilva in mid

I wonder where Everton will play Delph? If he's an even remotely attacking Mid oop he could be a real option

      It’s Delph though

exactly, not like he has a real attacking threat

Any chance City sell Danilo to another PL team, now that I would like to see 🙂

I love Delph, seriously underrated. I'd imagine he'd play deep though.

Indeed. Coleman at the same price and Digne for 0.5 more will get you far more returns.

    Rate my team please...

    Pickford
    Digne, Laporte, VVD
    Sigi, Perez, Fraser, Salah, Grealish
    Aguero, King

    No playing subs

Not sure about King, feel I need Wilson instead...thoughts please?

Can see Pérez benched for the first few. Fraser unsettled. Grealish unproven.

I also much prefer Wilson over King so found myself the extra 1.5 needed.

      Grealish -> Dendoncker
      4.0 -> Coleman

Gives you one playing bench player. Not convinced in Grealish as a fantasy asset

Don't know why some people consider WOL(H) a tough game for leicester. They can easily score 2 or 3 (and concede)

IMO, WOL lack of depth will make them vulnerable.

I think Wolves will sign a lot of depth in the last week of the window if they go through qualifiers successfully. Rondon, Alvarez look like they're on the table. Hopefully they don't sign any depth though, so they aren't contenders for 7th...

Hey Kiwi. For the sake of conversation, what is your rationale behind this claim?

    2. Nomar
      • 16 Years
      7 years, 1 month ago

      Not for me.

I don’t see the value in premium strikers when premium defenders and premium mids are outscoring them.

If you have Kane its hard to have enough of the other two sets of premium players.

And before people start getting all p*ssy about it, it’s not that I don’t like Kane or think he’s not going to score a lot of points in FPL this term.

It’s simply that I don’t see the ppm value in them at their price points.

    3. AuFeld
      • 10 Years

Kane is known as a slow starter to begin with. His stats are hindered without Son. Also, there is a lack of value in forwards compared to mids and premium defenders.

Vardy still million. why is he 1 til 2m more than players in similar teams? And is he considered to be a better c option therefore? I've sern lots of teams who could have a decent striker like king or jimenez, jota etc and then would have more to spend elsewhere?

    1. Nomar
      • 16 Years

I keep alternating between him and Jimi as my main striker.

Jimi opens up the route for better mids incl Maddison.

At the moment Jimi is winning, as it’s all about ppm for me this season.

Because he's expected to get more points. Why pick Aguero when you could pick Kane? Why pick Kane when you could pick lacazette? Why pick lacazette when you could pick Vardy? You could play this game for eternity and never finish making a team

      1. Nomar

You could if you weren’t being sensible about things.

But the OP is asking a general question.

Everyone recognises they need premium priced players, but you have to work within the same budget as everyone else.

It’s the same principle that the New England Patriots have employed for the last 15 years in the NFL where they have a salary cap.

They know they could go out and do what teams like Miami and Cleveland do every year and go and get the shiny expensive free agents and pay a lot of money to them. But then the rest of their team is imbalanced because they’ve spent the majority of it on big name players.

The Pats know every dollar they spend on a big name player has to come out of another player’s pocket. So they look for players who can give them solid production at the right price.

        It’s the same here.

If Jimi can get you similar points to Vardy and the saving you make can improve one of your mids, to the point where the mid you can afford with Jimi is going to easily surpass the difference in points that, say, Vardy and a 5.5 mid can get you (even if Vardy himself outscores Jimi, which he didn’t do last season) then it makes better financial sense to go with Jimi, no?
