The pre-season picture continued to build over the weekend as nearly every Premier League team was in action.

The summer friendlies have really started to ramp up now and we’ve got all the key talking points from the latest batch of games.

We’ve also updated our pre-season minutes spreadsheets so Fantasy managers have an accurate picture of which players are getting more game-time.

Girona 2-1 Bournemouth

Fraser scored Bournemouth’s only goal of the game as they lost to Girona

Goals: Ryan Fraser (£7.5m)

Assists: Jordon Ibe (£5.0m)

Uncertainty continues to reign over Eddie Howe’s first-choice defensive set-up.

The Bournemouth manager is still very much in the early stages of pre-season preparation, considering that a large number of youngsters were mixed with senior players against Girona on Saturday.

He went with two starting XIs for the 2-1 defeat, which means Fantasy managers must keep guessing on certain issues before we have more data to work with.

The goalkeeper situation is especially unclear still as Mark Travers (£4.5m) played the first 45 while Artur Boruc (£4.5m) came on for him at half-time.

The former was impressive towards the back-end of last season but nearly caused a calamitous own-goal on Saturday.

His clearance cannoned into Nathan Aké‘s (£5.0m) torso before only just sailing wide of his empty goal.

Against Girona, there was no involvement for Asmir Begovic (£4.5m) against the Italian side but he did get 45 minutes in the first pre-season match.

There is also plenty of interest in the left-back position with Fantasy managers hoping Diego Rico (£4.0m) will emerge as the favoured candidate.

After two matches, both he and new signing Lloyd Kelly (£4.5m) have played a total of 90 minutes there, made up of two 45-minute outings, while Charlie Daniels (£4.5m) is yet to be involved.

Also in the £4.0m department is Jack Simpson, who featured in the second-half XI.

However, he lasted just 22 minutes before giving away a penalty and earning a red card after a VAR review.

In the first-half, Howe deployed Callum Wilson (£8.0m) and Dominic Solanke (£5.5m) as the centre-forward and number 10 respectively in a 4-4-1-1 formation.

The pair linked up nicely on occasion but could not find a breakthrough.

There was mild concern among the Fantasy community on Saturday as Josh King (£6.5m) was absent from the matchday squad, with little information explaining this thus far.

Instead, the second-half saw Sam Surridge (£4.5m) lead the line, with David Brooks (£6.5m) tucked in behind him.

Crucially, Ryan Fraser (£7.5m) scored his second goal in as many pre-season matches, after an impressive run from Jordon Ibe (£5.0m) in midfield.

First-half Bournemouth XI (4-4-1-1): Travers; Rico, Aké, Mepham, A Smith; Kilkenny, Ofoborh, Gosling, Dobre; Solanke; Wilson.

Second-half Bournemouth XI (4-4-1-1): Boruc; L Kelly, Simpson, Ofoborh, Stacey; Fraser, Butcher, Surman, Ibe; Brooks; Surridge.

Fulham 2-1 Brighton and Hove Albion

Despite the defeat, Potter’s new-look Brighton offered a more attractive display compared to the end of last season

Goals: Pascal Groß (£6.5m)

Assists: None

While it was a defeat for Brighton against Fulham, there continue to be more encouraging signs under new manager Graham Potter.

The former Swansea boss deployed his troops in a 4-2-3-1 formation and instilled a more attractive approach, especially in the first half.

Dale Stephens (£4.5m) and Davy Pröpper (£5.0m) were credited by the local press for their ability to initiate offensive moves.

The attacking midfield trio of Jurgen Locadia (£5.5m), Pascal Groß (£6.5m) and Solly March (£5.0m) also showed some promise, with the system unlocking Groß’s potential as a number 10 once more.

The three attacking midfielders were quite fluid going forward too, with March occasionally moving into a central role and Groß drifting to the right, while Locadia was particularly lively down the left.

It was Groß who scored Brighton’s only goal of the game in the first half. It was an unorthodox one as his free-kick, whipped in from left, saw Glenn Murray (£6.0m) duck underneath it to wrong-foot the goalkeeper and allow the ball to sail into the back of the net.

We may only be a few matches into the pre-season campaign but it does appear at this early stage that Murray remains the first-choice at centre-forward ahead of Florin Andone (£5.0m).

The former has 106 minutes to his name so far, while Andone has just 74.

The Romanian international came on just after the hour-mark against Fulham and displayed more of that fiery attitude.

He was drawn into a heated debate with the referee concerning a throw-in decision.

New signing Leandro Trossard (£6.0m) came on for Locadia at half-time although this far into pre-season, it is hard to be sure who he will displace if he claims a regular starting spot.

There was no Anthony Knockaert (£5.5m) involved for Brighton on Saturday as he was completing a season-long loan to opponents Fulham.

“The move is a good one for the club and Anthony. The wide positions are areas in which we have a lot of competition within the squad.” – Graham Potter

Meanwhile, Mat Ryan (£4.5m) got his first minutes of pre-season, playing the first half before being replaced by Jason Steele.

Brighton XI (4-2-3-1): Ryan (Steele 45′); Bernardo (Suttner 75′), Dunk, Duffy (Burn 61′), Montoya (A Davies 87′); Stephens (Dreyer 85′), Pröpper (Kayal 61′); Locadia (Trossard 45′), Groß, March (Jahanbakhsh 61′); Murray (Andone 61′).

Crewe Alexandra 1-0 Burnley
+
Port Vale 1-3 Burnley

Robbie Brady was one of the Burnley players to impress against Port Vale

Goals: Chris Wood (£6.5m), Matej Vydra (£5.5m), Robbie Brady (£5.5m)

Assists: Brady, Wood, Aaron Lennon (£5.0m)

There was another double set of pre-season fixtures for Burnley on Saturday as they split their squad across matches against Crewe and Port Vale.

For that reason, we have treated the two matches as one entry on the pre-season minutes spreadsheet as it was impossible for players to have been involved in both.

The side that faced Port Vale had better luck, with Chris Wood (£6.5m) in particular going from strength-to-strength this summer.

Having netted a hat-trick against Accrington Stanley, he grabbed a goal and an assist on Saturday, taking his total attacking returns for pre-season to five.

Robbie Brady (£5.5m) also did well against Port Vale contributing a goal and assist.

After 90 minutes against the Valiants, Ben Gibson (£4.0m) currently has more pre-season minutes to his name than any other defender in his price point.

That may cause some excitement among Fantasy managers but it is still early days.

It is important to point out that Ben Mee (£5.0m) missed out on Saturday’s matches, but Dyche has insisted it is nothing serious, and he is naturally more likely to start alongside James Tarkowski (£5.0m) in Gameweek 1.

“Ben Mee’s nothing serious. We’re just monitoring people. At this stage, you can’t take any risks at all. Even today, we explained before the game that if anyone feels anything at all that’s not the norm then they’ve got to come straight off. I’m pleased they didn’t because I want to get the minutes into them.” – Sean Dyche

Amid Fantasy interest, Charlie Taylor (£4.5m) was absent again with a groin problem.

As things stand, Dyche is hoping that the former Leeds left-back will be able to face Fleetwood on Tuesday.

“Charlie worked hard yesterday and did some more work today. We’re hoping he’ll join in training from Monday onwards and we’ll have to make a decision for the game on Tuesday.” – Sean Dyche

Steven Defour (£5.5m) continues to be a serious doubt for the start of the season as he recovers from calf surgery.

“Steven Defour’s not right at the minute and we’ve got to make sure with him. I don’t know (if he’ll be right for the start of the season). There’s no pressure on him because he’s been through a serious injury and it’s important he has time to get over that.” – Sean Dyche

Burnley XI vs Crewe (4-4-2): Pope; Pieters, Dunne, Long, Lowton; McNeil, Westwood, Benson, Gudmundsson; Rodriguez, Barnes.

Burnley XI vs Port Vale (4-4-2): Heaton (Hart 45); Koiki, Tarkowski, Gibson, Bardsley; Brady, Hendrick, Cork, Lennon; Vydra, Wood.

Cheltenham Town 1-2 Leicester City

Vardy opened his pre-season account against Cheltenham

Goals: Jamie Vardy (£9.0m), Marc Albrighton (£5.5m)

Assists: Youri Tielemans (£6.5m), Nampalys Mendy (£4.5m)

Jamie Vardy (£9.0m) got his first goal of pre-season on Saturday as Leicester beat Cheltenham 2-1.

As was often the case towards the back-end of last season, the forward scored after latching onto a through-ball from Youri Tielemans (£6.5m).

Even though it’s just pre-season at this stage, and the level of opposition is not particularly high, Fantasy managers can certainly take encouragement from the two players continuing their understanding over the summer.

After picking up an injury in Leicester’s first pre-season friendly, new signing Ayoze Pérez (£6.5m) missed the Cheltenham match. Brendan Rodgers seemed confident that the player would be involved this week though.

“He should be fine next week. He just picked up a knock in training and his ankle was swollen up so he will be back next week.” – Brendan Rodgers

Pérez’s absence meant that Rodgers was a little short of options in attacking positions, so Ricardo Pereira (£6.0m) was used on the right flank of midfield in the second half.

While this was an out-of-position deployment for the defender, all accounts of his performance weren’t particularly positive, and Rodgers generally avoided playing Pereira in advanced positions last season after taking over from Claude Puel.

There were a few names who remain absent from pre-season matches so far, including Ben Chilwell (£5.5m), Kasper Schmeichel (£5.0m) and Matty James (£4.5m), but Rodgers has put them down to relatively minor injuries.

“Ben (Chilwell) had a slight issue with his groin but he is fine now, so he should be okay for Tuesday, he is back in training. Kasper (Schmeichel) is just a bit of time, sort of building him up, so he will feature over the course of the next week. And Matty (James) unfortunately just had a little occurrence of an injury but it should only be 10 days to 2 weeks before he is back, which is a shame because he’s worked ever so hard over pre-season.” – Brendan Rodgers

By contrast, Marc Albrighton (£5.5m) who struggled with injuries last season, has looked particularly sharp in both pre-season games so far.

The local press have been admiring the winger’s physical condition and work rate claiming that he appears as if “he has already completed weeks of pre-season”.

Albrighton rounded off his recent displays by scoring the second goal against Cheltenham.

Finally, Rachid Ghezzal (£5.5m) was also absent on Saturday, although the Algerian was not injured. Rodgers revealed that he gave the player some personal time off.

“I gave him time off, he became a father yesterday. He trained up until Thursday. It was already planned, which you can do nowadays. “So, he said his wife was going to give birth on the Friday, so I said ‘Yep, okay. Train Thursday and fly back for Friday’. His wife had a baby boy, which is great, so he has the weekend there, he will fly back tomorrow (Sunday) and get back to work on Monday.” – Brendan Rodgers

First-half Leicester XI (4-1-4-1): Ward; Elder (Fuchs, 43’), Maguire, Morgan, Daley-Campbell; Amartey; Muskwe, Thomas, King, Wright; Iheanacho.

Second half Leicester XI (4-1-4-1): Ward; Fuchs, Evans, Soyuncu, Justin; Mendy; Albrighton, Tielemans, Ndukwu (Fitzhugh, 81’), R Pereira; Vardy.

Borussia Dortmund 3-2 Liverpool

Matip in action for Liverpool against Borussia Dortmund

Goals: Harry Wilson, Rhian Brewster

Assists: Fabinho (£5.5m), Ben Woodburn

Liverpool’s key players are slowly dripping back into the first-team picture as the pre-season picture continues to build.

It was mostly a second-string side named to start against Borussia Dortmund on Saturday, but more important personnel featured in the second half.

Andrew Robertson (£7.0m), Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.0m) and Virgil van Dijk (£6.5m) all made their first appearance for the Reds this summer as they emerged in the 60th minute.

However, Saturday’s match took us no closer to understanding which of Joe Gomez (£5.5m), Joel Matip (£5.5m) or Dejan Lovren (£5.5m) will partner van Dijk at centre-back this season.

Gomez and Matip both played an hour against Dortmund, while Lovren joined van Dijk as a 60th-minute substitute.

Also returning to playing duties were central midfielders Jordan Henderson (£5.5m) and Georginio Wijnaldum (£5.5m).

Divock Origi (£5.5m) continues to get plenty of minutes under his belt as he hopes to be involved in the early part of the season for Liverpool, with Sadio Mané (£11.5m) and Roberto Firmino (£9.5m) still on extended leave.

He played 60 minutes at the apex of the Reds’ front-three.

Liverpool XI (4-3-3): Mignolet; Larouci (Robertson 60′); Gomez (Lovren 60′), Matip (van Dijk 60′), Clyne (Alexander-Arnold 60′); Fabinho (Wijnaldum 60′), Oxlade-Chamberlain (Henderson 60′), Milner (Lewis 60′); Kent (Woodburn 60′), Origi (Brewster 60′), Wilson (Jones 60′).

Any thoughts on Martial. Here is very high up my watchlist as points for the minutes he played last 2 or 3 at 7.5 look good and could be a bargain. Would wait and see how he does and wait for better fixtures but can he nail a spot down?

Well, that's the thing. Can he nail down a spot? With James, Sanchez, Rashford - it's completely unclear who Ole will play. And don't go listening to him bigging up players - he can only pick 11 and he's guaranteed to build the team around everyone bar the tea lady. And even she's guaranteed a shiny new pot.

Doesn’t look first choice atm as ole giving James a go. Likely martial gets that spot on the wing as that partnership of him and Rashford can be deadly

As I wrote yesterday, OGS said that he will play his first 11 in the AC Milan game, and most likely use the same in the Chelsea game. I think OGS is a big fan of Martial, and I see him starting. But I think he's also one of the first players to get taken off, if it doesnt work offensively. He also hasn't looked that good in pre season, but its a wait and see for me. Great value if he picks up some form.

      Looking at him myself...

Its a nice prospect if Man Utd start scoring alot of goals with the attacking style OGS wants to play.

However other options may prove a safer bet -
      Willian
      Felipe Anderson
      Zaha
      even Ozil?

Team is currently changing by 4 or 5 players every time I log back in - 5 at the back or not.... anyway - any obvious advances on this lot as a 5 at the back?

    Ryan, Button
    VVD, Robbo, TAA, Walker, Digne
    Sterling, Zaha, Brooks, (Dendoncker, Hayden)
    Vardy, Kane, (Greenwood)

    Thoughts are:
    - back 5 for the 1st 4ish GWs until Salah/Mane return to fitness,
    - rotate captaincy between Sterling and Kane
    - Sterling and Kane allow for easy swaps to Salah/Mane/Aguero/Auba if needed earlier
    - Wildcard at the 1st international break

May repost later today but would love to hear opinions on me (A) and my main ML competitors (B) first drafts. I’ve went heavy in defence for the safety in the early weeks whereas his drive to knock me off top spot has led to a more unique XI.

    A) Allison (Button)
    TAA Digne Zinchenko (Boly,Ward)
    Fraser Salah Sterling Perez (Dendonker)
    King Jota Deulofeu

    B) Ederson (Woodman)
    TAA-Boly-Sanchez (Prodl,Dann)
    Salah-KDB-David Silva-Moutinho (Stephens)
    Firmino-Haller-Jimenez

Must I have an Everton attacking option? Should I consider trimming Zinchenko?

I can't support an Arsenal defensive double up.
I also think there are going to be some great value midfield players this year, and I wouldn't want to deadlock myself out of them (or have to transfer out Salah to bring them in).

Cheers, I think Leno will be a top5 'keeper this season. Arsenal should clean sheet 1st games but after that will be save points. AMN isn't fixed, if a better £5.0m is apparent I will swap.

Defence is tricky this year, there isn't a stand out 4.5m option, and even going up to 5m there isn't anyone I'm really keen on either.
In your shoes, if you're happy going with Arsenal, look out for Holding involvement, I've seen a few rumours he could be in the first team this season at 4.5m.

I've read varies articles on it. Don't think it is as relative this season due to the highest valued players now being midfielders (Salah, Sterling, Mane), while the premium forwards Auba + Kane are cheaper. Also value in forwards like Wilson and Vardy, they will likely out score the same price mids (Sane, Mahrez, Alli).
Based on this year's pricing I believe 5 man midfield is the worst option.

523 is the weakest formation possible. Midfielders always score the most points. It may seem to make sense now, but it leaves you horribly inflexible if it goes wrong.

It's all about finding the best value (pts/£m). Sterling may outscore Vardy by 50points, but his pts/£m wouldn't be better.
          230 / 12 = 19.17
          180 / 9 = 20

          For example.

Really don’t like it. Double Everton and Arsenal defence? Perez is also an iffy pick of you ask me. Then no City attack is awful and plans to remove Salah after 3 GWs and still not being any City in?

      Crazy team!

No City attack is tactical. I posted the other day regarding there likely total minutes. 10 players competing for 5 attacking roles. It turns quality players in to punts (the punt being not knowing if they are going to start). Everyone on here seems to have a different opinion on their starting XI, they are all different and everyone can't be right unless city are allowed to play 16 players. I will eventually get City defence but not until the Brighton game at the earliest.

Fair enough. But there are still the other issue IMO. Perez having watching him for many years at Newcastle is weak and frequently gives the ball away. And double Everton and Arsenal defence is risky too. And I wouldn’t want plans to sell Salah either

Thanks for something different - overall it could work well early doors. Even if you ended up with an early WC who cares
As above no way would I have double Ars defence and probably not even one. KWP much more interesting at least as a short term pick til we see in he can hold off Foyth.

I'm all for being different and using different strategies... it's the trying to make others follow your path that gripes me. Early WCs can work for teams but it's not for me personally.
My plan is to hold off from using the WC until December if my team allows it. I used it early last year and didn't feel the benefit at all. Then saw players peaking such as Pogba, Doherty, Jimenez, Rashford to name a few and I wasn't flexible to jump on.
Also using an early WC tends to put pressure on me to use my 2nd one in January which I refuse to do.

                Each to there own though

I was looking at pretty much that exact team earlier, currently have the below tho:

      Kane > Vardy
      Martial > Siggy
      Pope > Ederson

I reckon Siggy and Ederson will outscore Martial and Pope by more than Kane outscores Vardy..

Sounds very good, too. But I'd also take captaincy into the equation. Kane can be very nicely rotated with Salah for the armband. I just wouldn't trust Vardy with it.

I know this will have been covered no end but how essential is Sterling and would KDB be a slightly brave replacement. There’s going to be so many assists to go around for City it’s got me wondering how active KDB will be around the box.

    1. el polako

All my initial drafts included Sterling but I will look closely at City's pre-season and if there is well documented proof that KDB is playing to the full of his offensive potential then he is going straight into my team and 2.5m saving ia being used to upgrade elsewhere.

My conclusion (and personal opinion) is that Sterling, Salah and Kane are very likely to be the three top scoring players this season.
I so far have not been able to get all three in a team I'm happy with overall, so one has to go.
No one really compares to Salah in the Liverpool attack (Mane is too close to his price point that it's worth finding the extra £1m for Salah).
Son, and arguably Moura could be an alternative to Kane.
KdB, I think will be the player who can be the most viable alternative to Sterling. Depending on the role he has in the City team this year - so watch that in the remaining preseason games.

Many if not most people have tripled on Liverpool with Salah and 2 defenders.
you know VVD, TAA and Robbo are nailed.
I contrast if you triple on City, you've got Sterling and Laporte, but after that the most attractive nailed defensive asset is Ederson.

Well he's the joint cheapest of the four options, so you'd expect him to be.
So rather than comparing him to players not in his position (Fraser and Brooks), just compare him to Wilson. He's £1.5m less, both play as strikers, and King has penalties.

...I'm not saying there isn't merit in paying extra for Wilson (I'm aware of heat map graphics etc) but certainly can see why King is well owned.

I am not talking about position, buf i understand you. I was talking about imapct. And if u need 6.5 striker, Deulofeu is better option

I actually think Deeney will get more points than Deulofeu this season.
Not a lot between Deeney, King, Jota and Deulofeu though.

People probably leaning towards King as he has penalties, and plays for a traditionally more attacking minded team, and isn't playing in Europe.

Fraser is legit. But you cant expect that Fraser, Brook, King and Wilson have great season. I just think King is rth option....1st is Wilson or even Fraser, 3rd Brooks

They haven't had a transfer story for 2 years now.

My favourite was the Alisson saga. The club fed the likes of James Pearce, Chris Bascombe, Maddock and Melissa Reddy info that Danny Ward was going to be the new number 1 and that Klopp has 'absolutely no interest in Alisson'.

We signed Alisson the following week!

        It's not awful, second team;

Mignolet (yeah okay, maybe it is)
Gomez - Lovren (Milner covering the full backs)
        Fabinho - OX - Lalana
        Shaqiri - Origi - Brewster

It's not awful, but it's not comparable to City. And that's what we're competing with, sadly.

Otamendi, Danilo, Fernandinho or Rodri, Mahrez, Sane, Jesus are in City's second XI.

On the contrary, the lack of signings for us FPL sorts, means we can be confident of our nailed assets.
It's also sensible to maintain stability of a winning squad that are still young. Club World Cup will be a joke to both sides.

      1. Davido989
        • 15 Years
        6 years, 7 months ago

True. Not that there was much doubt, but it does reaffirm FPL assets as being nailed.

I think we should take the CWC seriously, fwiw. We go in at the semi final stage (from what I've read), so would only need to play 180 minutes. It's just the travel, potential for injury and weather conditions which worry me. Something like Alisson - Trent - Lovren - VVD - new LB - Wijnaldum - Ox - Keita - Salah - Origi - new attacker, would probably be enough to win that competition.

    5. Maximus Bonimus Pointimus

AOX may be effectively like a new signing

Gomez won't be far off one either after the amount of games he missed

They signed the young centre back too & Origi is probably ready for a few more games

I think they're week set up to challenge city

Injury to VVD or Allison makes life very difficult though

Our XI is more than good enough to challenge City. In fact, in a combined XI we probably come out on top.

I'm more worried about our depth in full backs and attacking positions. City have Mahrez, Sane and Jesus sitting on their bench. Shaqiri and Origi do their best, but if one of the front 3 had a season long injury, the drop off would be far more than the drop off at City. They didn't have KDB for most of the season and still got 98 points - if we lose any of the front 3 for the season, we would be lucky to get 85-90 points IMO.

That's very true BUT, if Klopp was to fork out for 3 80m+ players now, they wouldn't come to be fringe players, so you'd have to mess with a winning first team.
It's a bit the like Spurs striker dilemma. you don't shift Kane, so an A-list striker isn't going to come to sit on the bench and all they can get are below-par sorts.

At this point, I would take a back up left back and a wide forward. They don't need to be household names or prices, Robbo and Mane weren't before we signed them either. Someone like Diogo Jota would be just fine, for example.

Klopp brought in a back-up left back. Dutch kid, so under the radar you didn't notice. Which backs up my point. The one who'll come as back up will be at best on a par with your Origis, Shaquiris, Matips, Oxen.

Good player but the beneficiary of the system being designed around him. Give Sane the same amount of minutes, and I think he produces those numbers too.

What are people's thoughts on Tuanzebe's chances of being united's starting CB this season alongside Lindelof? Of course, if united by Maguire he will be starting, but if United don't sign a new CB do you see Tuanzebe starting over Smalling and Jones?

    1. HamezMace
      • 11 Years
      6 years, 7 months ago

      Zero.
Obviously Maguire would be - then Lindelof, and Smalling would be comfortably ahead of Tuanzebe, who is probably on par with Bailly, I mean he was playing in the Championship last season.

Tuanzebe, along with Greenwood, Chong, Garner etc will get more EL games than PL games this season I expect.

      1. FantasyFootballFanatic
        • 9 Years
        6 years, 7 months ago

I don't know if I agree with that. Tuanzebe has played the most minutes (other than Lindelof) in that defence and although he was in the championship he has been regarded highly for a LONG time now at United. I think Greenwood will get similar game time to Rashford in his breakthrough season, lots of minutes from the bench. I don't think Garner will get many minutes, but Chong and Gomes will be on the bench too and I also wouldn't be surprised to see Gomes starting in certain matches. Ole loves youth and these 4 youngsters are great!

OGS has literally praised every single player in the squad this summer.
Martial - looks like a new player in training, super hungry.
Sanchez - can get us 20 goals guaranteed, if he stays fit.
Greenwood - In contention to start against Chelsea.

He can't play them all, with Rashford, Lingard, Mata, Lukaku etc.

I mean, it could happen, but in my opinion, no way Tuanzebe starts unless 3/4 other defenders are injured.
