Wolves 2-0 Crusaders

Goals: Diogo Jota (£6.5m), Ruben Vinagre (£4.5m)

Assists: Adama Traoré (£5.0m), Joao Moutinho (£5.5m)

Diogo Jota (£6.5m) picked up where 2018/19 left off as he scored Wolves first competitive goal of the new campaign.

Amid plenty of Fantasy interest this summer, the Portuguese international gave his side a deserved lead in the 37th minute at Molineux.

Loitering in the penalty box he pulled off a piece of exceptional technique as he slammed in Adama Traoré‘s (£5.0m) cross, which came in just behind him, on the half-volley.

In their first proper fixture of 2019/20, Nuno Espirito Santo retained Wolves’ 3-5-2 system which helped them to great success last term.

Fantasy managers will have been pleased to see the wing-backs continuing to play an important part in Wolves’ attacking play.

Traoré, standing in for the injured Matt Doherty (£6.0m), was effectively playing as a wide-forward on the right and it was this space that allowed him to cross for Jota’s first goal.

Meanwhile, Jonny (£5.5m) added found himself in plenty of space on the left, while it was his replacement Ruben Vinagre (£4.5m) whose advanced positioning led to the third goal.

Joao Moutinho (£5.5m) played a ball into the box from deep, where Vinagre was waiting at the back post and he was able to tuck the ball away after goalkeeper Sean O’Neill allowed it to squirm through his grasp.

It must be said that the end-product of the wing-backs was a little inconsistent on the night but it is still early days in pre-season so this might be an area that improves closer to Gameweek 1.

Elsewhere in the team, there was another start at centre-forward for budget midfielder Morgan Gibbs-White (£5.0m).

He has been deployed alongside Jota in all three of Wolves’ pre-season matches now, including the Europa League win over Crusaders, scoring against Newcastle and offering the outside chance of an exceptional out-of-position opportunity this season.

However, we do just have to temper any excitement over Gibbs-White as a Fantasy asset this year with some disclaimers.

The first is that he had been playing up-front while Raúl Jiménez (£7.5m) was absent from friendly matches as a result of his extended leave following the CONCACAF Gold Cup.

After his time off, the Mexican is already back in the Wolves fold, named on the bench on Thursday night and coming on in the 58th minute.

With two weeks to go until Gameweek 1, we have to assume that Jiménez will be working towards starting at Leicester on Sunday, August 11.

However, Doherty might also hold the key here as it is his injury that is forcing Nuno to deploy Traoré at right wing-back.

If Doherty is back in time for Gameweek 1, then Traoré might also be in the frame for a centre-forward berth if Jiménez is not necessarily ready in time.

On the injury front, Wolves will currently be sweating on the fitness of central midfielder Ruben Neves (£5.5m).

He was replaced in the 58th minute with a side injury and was taken to hospital after the game for scans.

“(Neves) is struggling. Let’s see. It was a hard knock and he’s in pain now. We will take care of him.” – Nuno Espirito Santo

Jota (right) had several chances to score against Crusaders

How much we can take forward from this game is tricky to assess though.

Obviously, the level of opposition Wolves faced was not exactly at Premier League level. Crusaders finished fourth in last season’s Northern Ireland Premiership, qualifying for the Europa League through winning the Irish Cup.

Furthermore, the club only offered players their first professional contracts at the start of last season.

For that reason, many might have expected Wolves to win by a bigger margin but there are still a few mitigating factors here.

Crusaders spent virtually the entire game sitting in a compact formation, with two banks of five, in an attempt to frustrate Wolves’ play. That’s a difficult prospect for even top-flight teams, especially at this early stage of pre-season.

“It’s tough, the season starts earlier. Players come in on different dates.” – Nuno Espirito Santo

Despite the Irish side trying to make things difficult for them, Wolves still managed to fire off 30 shots (10 on target) and visiting goalkeeper O’Neill was a busy man all night, working particularly hard to thwart Jota.

“We showed we are ready but not as sharp and accurate as we should be.” – Nuno Espirito Santo

Wolves XI (3-5-2): Patrício; Boly, Coady, Bennett; Jonny (Vinagre 64′), Neves (Jiménez 58′), Moutinho, Dendoncker, Traoré; Jota, Gibbs-White (Saïss 85′).

I’ve seen your comments, so I know why you’ve gone light in defence, but I think it’s the main weakness of your team right now.. Guillbert looks a good differential pick, but at least one of the other two cheap defenders should be upgraded heavily.

Even sacrificing Rich for a 4.5m Dendoncker, saving 3.5m, could be used to upgrade Kelly to Robbo, who you can think of as an attacker, and Tielemans to Zaha who has the same threat as Richarlison and may even become his teammate. Even Kelly to Azpi would be a good move and still give you another 1m to spend elsewhere (maybe on that 5th mid or upgrading Jota to Jiminez)

They’re results against top 6 is what got them into europa league so tough to judge when to bring their players in

I'm not a fan of Zaha as a pick. I think there are better options at, above and below his price point. Don't like King as a selection either.

If you're rotating 4.5s in def and playing 442 mostly I'd be tempted to upgrade zaha by downgrading King to a bench player. Your current setup is definitely more versatile though.

you will need to play an early wild card if you start with that
nothing on the bench and anyone priced 7.5-11 is unreachable without ditching kane... so how much do you expect to get from kane and is he worth sacrificing all your safety nets and potential to increase team value for

In light of incoming transfers from European leagues, this is interesting https://www.manchester.ac.uk/discover/news/university-students-accurately-track-time-taken-for-new-premier-league-stars-to-find-their-feet/
Would suggest holding off on haller etc for a little longer. Pulisic - is he a mid/fwd?! Might also suggest that you could identify early higher performers if first few are simply above average (eg salah/jimenez) as could go on from there to even greater things...

Too little transparency here for me to care. What clubs, what players? sample sizes etc needed to know what to think about this. I always get suspicious when an actual scientific paper isnt linked, it suggests that the methodology is bad and they just want to spin it for popular interest.

Thats not transparancy that could literally mean anything. Its completely arbitrary what they mean by "large data set" and "several seasons". Trust me with the amount of pressure people who conduct studies have on them to publish something meaningful not showing the actual results is a huge red flag.

I'd bench Greenwood for the opening fixture. I would expect him to be more of an impact sub for Utd this season rather than a starter, at least at the start of the season. A cameo off the bench against Chelsea isn't what you want from him. Ideal situation for him IMO is in your starting 11 against weak opponents so that if he comes off the bench it's against the tired legs of a weaker side.

Fair, but what about the squad, whether I start Greenwood over Del (a total gamble I admit) or not?

Big fan of the squad in general. I'd love to see King upgraded to Wilson but not sure where you'd find the budget.

Only if he downgrades Ederson to a 4.5 GK, not sure if it's worth it.

Yeah, Wilson over King and I'd be happy, but I'm committed to a super solid back 5

Should play LWB or RMF depending on if they play 3 or 4 at the back. He could end up being a good pick, but probably not at the start of the season.

Arsenal, Liverpool, and Tottenham in the first 5, no clean sheets there.
Might get a penalty I guess, but overall not a good investment.

Rate my team please lads! I'm torn with several versions but this is my top draft (repost, almost, but everyone focussed on me starting Greenwood which I realise would be a total punt):

    Ederson (Button)
    TAA VVD Laporte Coleman (Kelly)
    Salah Sterling Perez Fraser (Dedoncker)
    King Deulofeu (Greenwood)

Decent but w your strikers that cheap it’ll be difficult to afford a Kane or someone like that if he hits form with your highest striker at 6.5

Very similar to mine, but I'm starting to feel uncomfortable about having such a cheap forward line.

Well said lads, but I'm thinking of giving up on that golden forward haul. It's always very satisfying for one week, but the stats show that in the long run, unless you get them at exactly the right time, there's better value elsewhere

    I have a dilemma.

I have laca up top in a 442 alongside wesley.
Is it worth the risk of changing to 4-5-1 and having sane instead of laca leaving wesley up top alone?

Could be, but decent opening fixtures. Siggy and Aguero will in my opinion outscored Sterling and Vardy in the first five fixtures.

At the end of the day its all about opinions, that's why we play the game.

    King(6.5m)

but the problem you run into is the same one I have... 6.0 mids is tough to choose from
Pereyra best, CHO possible if he nails a spot but its not clear who to get
would suggest Brooks and find 0.5 elsewhere - perhaps Laporte > Walker

            • 8 Years

Yes exactly. Already dropped 0.5 for VVD over Robbo. I agree Perreyra is best 6m option. CHO won't be fit for start of season. Brooks is an option also, but I'd really only want to double up on BOU with Fraser+Wilson/King

    Keep Perez

Del and King are probably the best options at that price. Jota has rough fixtures. Deeney an outside option + wait on promoted fwd to show if they can do it at this level.

Will be rotated I reckon. Willian can play there as well and arguably its his best position. Plus RLC plays there as well when he returns from injury. Barkley so far has been Chelsea's most creative player in pre-season. It's Mount's first season with the squad and he is 19 so make of all of this what you want.

Seems like all spots at Chelsea are up for grabs except Kepa and Azpilicueta, and probably Luiz & Kante when he is back from injury.

CHO is injured and Willian hasn't returned to training yet so Pulisic and Pedro look like starting in the early parts of the season
