After much flapping about numbers, finding a suitable venue and possible extremes of temperature, the third Fantasy Football Scout Charity Cup (in support of the Stroke Association) was a pleasantly smooth affair in cool but dry conditions, as four squads of Scout regulars and guests assembled at Whittington Park in Islington on Sunday 28 July 2019.

Much was expected from Bhuna’s Koln outfit, which included several ever-presents such as Matzi, Anish and Rupert the Horse plus the man with a hammer for a left-foot (D Cullen).

The Brescia squad, meanwhile, comprised of several Scout regulars including Az, David, Geoff and TopMarx. TopMarx was another making his third Charity Cup appearance, having been instrumental in booking the pitch and liaising with the Stroke Association, but only arrived with seconds to spare after a “rough” night – he wasn’t the only one suffering from a Scoutcamp hangover!

Elsewhere, Applebonkers and Tony L took to the field with ever-presents MyPrettyPony and Paul R wearing Twente’s colours, whilst the Osasuna side boasted a number of Charity Cup legends, including Steve B, SullySonic, Bowstring, Messi and NorcalJosh.

The opening fixtures saw Osasuna edge out Brescia 1-0 in a tight affair and Twente punish defensive lapses in the Koln defence to emerge 3-0 victors, including BashVilla’s opening goal of the tournament.

The two victors then played out a nervy head to head in which Osasuna took the lead before being pegged back to 1-1. Osasuna saw a point-blank effort tipped over the bar and Twente broke from the ensuing corner to score the decisive goal and edge a narrow 2-1 win.

Meanwhile, a similarly tense affair between Koln and Brescia was settled by the goal of the tournament from Scout boss, Geoff, who lashed in a sweet strike from distance which flashed past Koln stopper, Matzi, who had managed to parry David’s initial effort.

The final fixtures of the group stages saw Twente complete a clean sweep by seeing off Brescia, including a long-range lob by Toby W, a hat-trick by Toby L and a side serving of nutmegs – first, TopMarx was megged by eventual Golden Boot winner, Scott G, who found the back of the net with style. Then it was the turn of Rupert the Horse, exploiting the space between Paul R’s legs in the first of several equine tricks, a repertoire including the “round the world” and the “roly poly”.

On the other pitch, Osasuna bounced back to defeat luckless Koln, who at least scored their first goal of the tournament, before a Bowstring strike took the game away from Bhuna’s side. Osasuna were also gifted a goal in unusual circumstances, when Koln keeper, Rupert, flicked a throw-in into his own net for a fine own-goal.

After a slight reshuffle, the semi-finals set up with unbeaten Twente facing Koln and Osasuna taking on Brescia. Koln took Twente the distance, securing a 1-1 draw before bowing out in a sudden-death penalty shoot-out, with Paul R saving the crucial spot-kick.

Brescia gained revenge for their defeat to Osasuna in the group stage by claiming a 2-0 win, MyPrettyPony sealing the win by flicking the ball over defender, SullySonic with his right before volleying in with his left in a goal which initially drew comparisons (well, one anyway!) to Gazza’s Euro 96 effort against Scotland – until SullySonic pointed out the significant height difference between himself and Colin Hendry. In any event, the dentist chair had been well deployed the previous night as Matzi introduced MyPrettyPony and Az to the benefits of a pre-match G&T or six.

Koln duly claimed the wooden spoon as Osasuna ran out 1-0 winners and the same scoreline settled the main cup final, with player of the tournament Scott G toe-poking through the legs of Brescia’s keeper, Michael L, to bring the cup back to the Netherlands and bring an end to Could Get Messi’s 100% tournament win record.

It was a day of many goals (especially from Laurie H and Scott G), some woodwork specialists (Peter Ouch) and a stunning own goal (Joseph F-B) but mainly just lots of fun. And, of course, lots of money (over £600 at the time of writing) raised/pledged for the Stroke Association.

We are still accepting and encouraging donations for this worthy cause – please donate to the Stroke Association at the Just Giving page which is linked here.

It's about points per million, I suppose. Filling the gaps.

VVD offers better value, TAA's minutes are questionable and £7m kills value elsewhere.

Robertson's obviously better value than, say, Pérez, but if that means starting with a £5m 4th mid I can understand the concern.

      Hell of a risk though.

VVD will play every game and never be rotated unlike TAA and Robbo. VVD was going up for more headers at corners than at the start of the season and I'm tipping him to get a couple more goals this time. So really, there's zilch between the 3 of them, for me.

This has been the worst start to an FPL season ever for keepers.

Half the premiums may not play GW1. The really good budget beasts are no longer budgets and the 4.5 all look mediocre.

I can't be bothered spending big on keepers as none look to be worth their price points this season.

        Hi all,

I keep flipping between these options, which would you go for?

11m forward, 6m forward, 5.5m midfield (currently Auba, Wesley, McGinn)

        Or

        2 x 6.5m forwards (king, deuloufeu) and a 9.5m midfielder

The first obviously has a premium striker, but the second option would allow me a price point to switch between the lower end premium midfielders (KDB, Son, Pepe etc) as needs be.

My current midfield is polarised (Salah, Sterling, Perez, Barkley, McGinn).

No, I don't know where people are suddenly getting this idea. You buy him for your bench when you have a 1 or 2 up top strategy. You don't get him expecting him to start. If you decided on a benched striker and don't want to waste money, you need a 4.5 and he's the best option by far.

Obviously he was on my bench either way. Would like some minutes from a 4.5 if needed though. Was playing a 3 5 2 with greenwood on the bench.. Switching to a 3 4 3 with dendonker on the bench now

He's better then Nketiah because for me Arsenal's purchases make poor Eddie even less likely to get pitch time.

Ask yourself, are those 3 6m strikers likely to get more points over the season than 6m defenders - Walker, Digne, Azpili, Luiz? I think not.

I just don't understand your last argument and it's not just you, I see it a lot on here. What does over the season have to do with anything? I agree with you that those defenders will end up with more points but that's irrelevant as I'm not picking a team for the whole season. I have two Wildcards and a free transfer every week. With their starting fixtures the 6m forwards could easily beat City and Chelsea defenders over the first 3 or 4 weeks.

In the past yes, but the game has changed and the value isn't in £6m strikers now.

As Andy said, you can expect every £6m defender to comfortably outscore every £6m striker. That's the likely reality of the situation.

Right, and to address I Member's last point, for me it's not simply a matter of over the season. Liverpool and City are pretty consistent, and Everton start with easy fixtures, so I'd expect defenders from those 3 clubs to outscore the 6m strikers in the above lists over the next few GWs as well.

Anyone concidering a Pope Heaton rotate (much like myself.)You need to concider the following:

          Cons.
          1) The Problem with Pope and Heaton rotate is they both play a big team in weeks 10, 15, 22, 30. Each week I fully expect both teams to concede. This doesn't include anyone out of the top 6.

10: Pope Chelsea home, Heaton City away.
15: Pope City home, Heaton Chelsea away.
22: Pope Chelsea away, Heaton City home
30: Pope City away, Heaton Chelsea home.

There is an option to do a one week transfer, but this assumes price rise is not a factor. Goalkeepers don't tend to rocket in price, but one penalty save and clean sheet could ruin this short term plan completely. Not to mention injury to your outfield.

          2) I think Pope is nailed, but is he really?

          3) 0.5 is the difference between Coleman and digne, or walker and laporte, etc.

          4) Can anyone bare the thought of benching Heaton GW14 vs man u away, for him to keep a clean sheet, 3 bonus and 2 save points, for pope to concede 3 goals against palace at home? We've all been there! It will happen at some point!

          Pros.
          5) BUT..... Is set and forget really the best option? 4 weeks I've mentioned that both keepers are almost garunteed to concede, but have just the one goalkeeper, for the sake of this argument, assume they will concede against the top 6 each game, that's 12 games rather than 4 you are putting lamb to slaughter. Not to mention other games against high scoring teams such as Leicester or Bournemouth to concider.

          6) Having 2 playing keepers from the start gives you a better option if you decide to bench boost early on, not that I am likely to, but the option is there.

          7) A second playing keeper covers last minute emergencies such as warm up injuries etc.

          8) This option is still cheaper than a 5.5, 4.0 combo.

Pros and cons for each argument. I think I'm going to stick with the two for GW1 and assess further down the line.

Yep that's what I'm going way they rotate perfectly and GW10 Chelski at home for Pope I'm fine with it's not till GW15 where there is trouble and by then will have played a WC to go with a diff combo of need be

Pick one and use the 0.5, save points and ‘surprise’ CS will be majority of their points.

I'm getting both, starting Pope and seeing which defence looks the better of the two.

Whichever it is then that's the keeper I'll play every week.

Can't be bothered with rotation and as per my previous post above, keepers are a minefield this season. None of them look value for money at their price points now.

If Fabs and Foster were £4.5 we'd be sorted, but not interested in them at £5m as you need a non playing back up keeper unless you want to spend 9.5m.

Set and forget 4.5 for me ...my rotation keepers got 131 pts last season...if I'd gone with Fabianski and 4.0 would have had 143 pts and 0.5 to strengthen elsewhere.

A lot of templatey picks with a punt on Haller - could work a treat!

Brighton may not be the most glamorous of teams but with good starting fixtures and a more attacking manager they seem a decent shout for cheap attacking punts. Trossard looks a good option as does Gross if he starts.

I’m looking at the strikers however. Murray and Locadia look very much likely to be first choice in the front three.

Murray has three goals in pre season, Locadia two goals two assist. Anyone have opinions on why one is a better option than the other. Murray obviously has pens but then Locadia is 0.5m cheaper. I don’t know a lot else on them under the new manager however.

My forward line for at least the first two gws is going to be Laca and Wilson, and going heavier in defence means I can only afford two decent strikers plus benchfodder (Greenwood).
Whilst I agree that Trossard looks an interesting option I feel that maybe we're all getting a bit swayed by fixtures/preseason over proven PL output. For instance, I haven't heard a single mention of Moutinho at 5.5 when his preseason has been just as good as Trossard's and he's 0.5 less...

Would you double up on Pool defence in a 3-5-2, or would you switch to 4-5-1?

Zinchenko is a rotation risk and two 4.0m defenders might not cover it

Looks good on the whole though

Looks balanced to me but I would go with one playing keeper to get a 4.5 defender on the bench

Depends. Don't go in for mids and strikers yet. Defence is good but depends who else you've got. If, say, you're 3 at the back and you've got 2 Pool and a Citizen, you're fine. If you need a defender from one of the other 18 clubs I'd look at Everton first.

                Robbo TAA Stones Kiko

                Wilson

                4.0 kelly greenwood nketia

Will swap wilson + salah to kane + son for gw3 so can't downgrade wilson atm
                Is it worth downgrading kdb?

Bet you don't sell Salah if he scores!
For me, the starting defenders want to be premiums, so I would have Digne over Kiko. That would requite KdB>Bilva. I'd do that myself, yes.
