Captain Sensible

Fantasy Premier League managers had a relatively easy captaincy decision for Gameweek 2, until the European Super Cup came along.

A full 120-minute outing for some of Liverpool’s key assets on Wednesday night has thrown the cat amongst the pigeons to some extent.

We have factored the midweek action into our thinking as we strive to find the best captain for the upcoming weekend.

As per usual, the Captain Sensible article is here to compare the individual players against each other statistically, as well as examine the defences of the sides they will face in Gameweek 2.

As this uses data from the Fantasy Football Scout Members Area, only those who have signed up for the 2019/20 season can access it in full.

Captain Poll

Captain Poll results as of Thursday August 15

For the second week in a row Mohamed Salah (£12.5m) has absolutely stormed the captain poll, this time taking a 55% share at the time of writing.

Even though he scored a 12-point haul in Gameweek 1, it is still somewhat surprising to see him dominate the vote so convincingly, in light of Raheem Sterling’s (£12.1m) hat-trick against West Ham.

However, it looks as if most Fantasy managers have looked at the Gameweek 2 opposition to decide between the two premium midfielders.

Southampton were well beaten by Burnley at Turf Moor last week, the Clarets scoring three quick-fire goals in the second half.

Furthermore, the Saints were second bottom for clean sheets at home last season, keeping just three of them across the course of the campaign.

Meanwhile, it looks as if Fantasy managers are not getting too excited about Sterling’s 20-point haul from Gameweek 1 as Manchester City prepare to host Tottenham this weekend.

Sterling’s record against Spurs at the Etihad Stadium is not too shabby, two goals in his last three facing them at home.

But just 11.3% of voters in the poll believe the England international is the best captain option this week, a 44% gap between him and the leading option Salah.

The second-place spot in this week’s captain poll is occupied by Arsenal forward Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£11.0m), who opened his Premier League account for the new season in last week’s 1-0 win over Newcastle.

The Gabonese forward is currently backed by 16% of our voters, who are most likely influenced by his record against Burnley.

Aubameyang has faced the Clarets three times since signing for Arsenal and has scored twice in each one of them.

Outside of the top three is a host of will differentials in this week’s poll.

There’s a rather unexpected left-field choice in fourth place as Josh King (£6.5m) finds himself as the best of the rest.

Ahead of Bournemouth’s trip to Aston Villa, 1.8% of the voters are preparing to take a punt, while 1.76% of them are plumping for Aubameyang’s new colleague Nicolas Pépé (£9.5m).

Marcus Rashford (£8.5m), Teemu Pukki (£6.5m), Sadio Mané (£11.5m), Callum Wilson (£8.0m) and Gylfi Sigurdsson (£8.0m) are the only other options with more than 1% support.

but that result of jota being benched then subbed on to score is really good... maybe the europa league theory will come true after wolves play a better team

Yeah. Feels a long time ago that. You're saying thanks, but everyone still captained Hazard. 🙂

Few more people listened the second time in fairness. I was just trying to help my FPL brothers and sisters. Doing it behind the face of a Die Hard character probably wasn't the best vehicle. I understood the doubts.

I've got Auba, but won't captain. Burnley will sit annoyingly deep and frustrate Arsenal. I'm going Sterling.

Liverpool have been screwed having to play Saturday after 120 minutes in Super Cup. Not really fair. I'm no Liverpool fan, but it's not fair. Chance they won't win tomorrow.

So you think Sterling at home to Spurs better than Auba at home to Burnley? Last 3 games against Burnley he's scored 6 goals. But if thats your opinion, fair enough 🙂

I think Pukki and Jota look likely to be the choice value options longer term, so not sure I really need a value mid.

Saving and playing. Hope he starts at Left Wing vs Fredericks who looked vulnerable at right back vs City. If he starts he seems a very greedy player who could be fantasy gold (shot every 22 mins in Belgium).

      Keeping Trossard for now.

Big questions around Perez and Vardy too.

Least I can bring in Kane after GW2 if things do not pan out this weekend and that also depends on what Kane does this weekend. Going to be an interesting GW.

Thing about Mahrez is that eye-catching attacking performances will NOT be enough to keep him in the team.

He was dropped for large periods last year as punishment for failure to press/track back etc.

The best way to gauge his security of starts will be to assess his contribution in defensive transitions.

I'd love to be proved wrong but I can't see Pep benching Bernardo or Sterling regularly, so its kinda hard to see Mahrez becoming a consistent option.

      1. FOO FIGHTER
        • 7 Years

Reckon there will be plenty rotation under Pep this season but that leaves him with problems. As it is Sane wants to pack his bags because he ain't a regular. Now injured.

Bernardo Silva not going to want to sit on the bench neither Mahrez who played very well vs Westham. Another situation is Jesus and Aguero. I would not own any of these City players as you do not know who Pep will sit on the bench. Sterling likely to get most minutes from City's attacking options this season.

I think the scaremongering around Salah has gone a bit overboard.

Salah only started on the bench ONCE last season and that was in December in the second match when they played the 2nd, 5th and 8th of December.
Furthermore he was only hooked before the 75th minute on 3 occasions - one of them being to an injury.

In comparison Sterling was an unused sub on 4 occasions, started on the bench 3 times and got hooked before the 75th minute on 5 occasions.
Auba started on the bench 6 times and got hooked before the 75th minute 7 times - not counting the times he wasn’t in the squad at all.

I’m NOT saying Salah will be the best captaincy option this week per se, but all these benching and rotation comments are just nonsense really. Sterling and Auba should be at least as much at risk of managed minutes as Salah is.

Correct starting 11 and bench order?

    Heaton
    Robertson VVD Zinch
    Trossard KDB Perez Salah
    Wesley Kane King

    Morning all!

There’s a lot of talk of people shifting funds around to get Kane or Auba in.

Anybody else thinking of getting Mane in? Salah, Sterling Mane midfield is expensive but he looks super sharp again and he scored more points last year than Kane scored even in his best seasons and is only 0.5 more expensive?

    Thoughts...

I agree that Mane is a really enticing option.
That being said, I’m not sure it’s worth doubling up on Pool mids at that price. He did play ~650 minutes more than Kane last year, so the comparison is a bit unfair if Kane can stay fit.

I’ll be monitoring the situation over the coming weeks and perhaps look to fit him in/downgrade Salah if it seems like Mane is the go to guy.
