Captain Sensible

Fantasy Premier League managers had a relatively easy captaincy decision for Gameweek 2, until the European Super Cup came along.

A full 120-minute outing for some of Liverpool’s key assets on Wednesday night has thrown the cat amongst the pigeons to some extent.

We have factored the midweek action into our thinking as we strive to find the best captain for the upcoming weekend.

As per usual, the Captain Sensible article is here to compare the individual players against each other statistically, as well as examine the defences of the sides they will face in Gameweek 2.

As this uses data from the Fantasy Football Scout Members Area, only those who have signed up for the 2019/20 season can access it in full.

Captain Poll

Captain Poll results as of Thursday August 15

For the second week in a row Mohamed Salah (£12.5m) has absolutely stormed the captain poll, this time taking a 55% share at the time of writing.

Even though he scored a 12-point haul in Gameweek 1, it is still somewhat surprising to see him dominate the vote so convincingly, in light of Raheem Sterling’s (£12.1m) hat-trick against West Ham.

However, it looks as if most Fantasy managers have looked at the Gameweek 2 opposition to decide between the two premium midfielders.

Southampton were well beaten by Burnley at Turf Moor last week, the Clarets scoring three quick-fire goals in the second half.

Furthermore, the Saints were second bottom for clean sheets at home last season, keeping just three of them across the course of the campaign.

Meanwhile, it looks as if Fantasy managers are not getting too excited about Sterling’s 20-point haul from Gameweek 1 as Manchester City prepare to host Tottenham this weekend.

Sterling’s record against Spurs at the Etihad Stadium is not too shabby, two goals in his last three facing them at home.

But just 11.3% of voters in the poll believe the England international is the best captain option this week, a 44% gap between him and the leading option Salah.

The second-place spot in this week’s captain poll is occupied by Arsenal forward Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£11.0m), who opened his Premier League account for the new season in last week’s 1-0 win over Newcastle.

The Gabonese forward is currently backed by 16% of our voters, who are most likely influenced by his record against Burnley.

Aubameyang has faced the Clarets three times since signing for Arsenal and has scored twice in each one of them.

Outside of the top three is a host of will differentials in this week’s poll.

There’s a rather unexpected left-field choice in fourth place as Josh King (£6.5m) finds himself as the best of the rest.

Ahead of Bournemouth’s trip to Aston Villa, 1.8% of the voters are preparing to take a punt, while 1.76% of them are plumping for Aubameyang’s new colleague Nicolas Pépé (£9.5m).

Marcus Rashford (£8.5m), Teemu Pukki (£6.5m), Sadio Mané (£11.5m), Callum Wilson (£8.0m) and Gylfi Sigurdsson (£8.0m) are the only other options with more than 1% support.

Tackle on Adrian. Looks like the invader may have collided with more than 1 player.

Why is Klopp talking about Kante like it's his player?

    1. RN
      • 10 Years
      7 years, 1 month ago

He's talking about players with natural ability to run at a high tempo all day long. Kante is one of those as are Mane and Salah and so is Pedro. He's making the point that these players will recover from a 120 minute high intensity game without any problems

Play both, save FT and then decide gw 3 because there aren't a lot of options in that price bracket or below. You will make a better decision on replacements (if needed) gw 3. They both could start and deliver as well.

Play both. I'd imagine both will play some part of the games where there could be a fair few goals. Then make a call.

Yep. It looks good short term but it never works out most of the time. Price changes plus there will invariably a needto
look at other areas. Effectively letting go of another FT. But then, wouldn't matter if Auba does the job.

Not really, its targeting the person who looks like the best captain choice this week. If he gets a brace as captain, it's a good move.

I can see this backfiring massively when Kane returns, Salah the most popular C candidate scores a brace and Arsenal goes back to being good old Arsenal.

I waa looking at the top scorers on 140 or close who played their TC chip with Sterling last week.

At first I was thinking what a dumb mistake, but now I'm thinking actually 20 points is a pretty fine time to play it.

Even those with Salah TC 12pts could be a lot worse really.

It's a casual move, but in pretty sure last season I saved mine all season long nearly, for a cunning DGW bonanza and ended up with 3X very little.

Minimisation of risk + maximising potential vs. taking a wacking great punt on GW1.

A plum DGW could return more than 20.

Fair play. If I end up getting 60 points playing my TC in a DGW I'll be well happy with that.

Exactly the same for me. DGW is always a fail on my TC.
      Sterling 3x3 last season

With Klopp mentioning the possibility of playing Lonerhan in goal this weekend will FPL have to add him in as a player?

If so, when do we think he'll appear.

If not, is there a precedent for a player getting match time without being purchasable in the game?

Have him in atm due to Liverpool defence being a bit leaky atm but Zouma was actually pretty solid against pool in the Super Cup (unlike the United game). And Lei didn't cause much trouble at home against a tired Wovles side, did they?

Hard to call. If Southampton manage to score, Ings against new old club...

Chelsea vs. Leicester looks like goals. 2-1. Zouma looking a little lacking in confidence. Big spotlight.

So I'd play Ings. Then Zouma. Dendonker in there at No.2 if there are some weird teamsheets.

I would probably hold fire this GW. But a double up on LIVE defence looks too much of a risk atm. Maybe next week you can do

There are actually lots of 5.0m penalty takers.

Jorginho is allergic to the opponents' box though so you'd be praying just for PKs which historically actually go down when introduced in major leagues. So no, I don't think he's a good shout.

I like it alot! Depends on Rodgers comments though, but if he says something like: 'Zaha will start up top' I'll do it.

Also frees up 0.5 to use in a -4 or plain upgrade a 6.5 attacker to Kean perhaps if he starts for Everton and looks good.
