Which FPL defenders are the most attacking in 2019/20 so far?

The 2018/19 season was the year of the defender from a Fantasy Premier League perspective, with the three best value-for-money FPL assets all belonging to Liverpool’s backline.

The Reds and Manchester City racked up 41 clean sheets between them (no team had recorded 20 shut-outs in a single campaign since 2011/12; last season we had two clubs achieving that) and six defenders hit double figures for attacking returns.

There was a lot of talk of FPL managers going ‘five at the back’ in pre-season, although the momentum behind that strategy stalled as we approached Gameweek 1 and lost further traction once 2019/20 begun.

Everton are the only club to have registered clean sheets in both of their top-flight fixtures, with Liverpool, Chelsea and Spurs among the ten teams yet to record a single shut-out.

Clean sheets are just one route to points, of course, and we Fantasy managers love an FPL defender who can pick up the odd attacking return at the other end of the pitch.

With that in mind, our latest Members’ article takes a look at the defenders who have demonstrated an offensive threat in Gameweeks 1 and 2.

It is still very early days in the 2019/20 campaign, it should be said, and there has to be a big disclaimer about any findings in this article.

Certainly, we’ll get a better picture of the lay of the land once we’re a month or two into the new season and there is a bigger data sample to analyse.

Nevertheless, any early patterns can help us steal a march on other Fantasy managers and identity which defenders could chip in with a goal or assist over the coming Gameweeks – and possibly compensate for any loss of clean sheets.

    Would you rather...

    A) Play Barnes in a 3-4-3

    B) Play Trossard/some other ~6m midfielder in a 3-5-2

    Thanks.

The 4.5 mids are gold. Prefer Dendo myself but Cantwell may prove me very wrong.

I've got Mount already. 🙂 Currently at Mane-KDB-Sterling-Mount and Cantwell on the bench. Also got Pukki up top, so thinking it's a bit questionable to double-up on Norwich attack?

Is Lundstram most likely to get dropped!?

Lundstram 100%. Can’t see him being dropped and looks central to Sheffield!

The cheapest defender playing in midfielder who looks a goal threat...no brainer!

Looks like you've already made up your mind for KDB. Good choice. But why wait to next week? Son's back, Moura spot under threat (even without Son's return). KDB has a nice fix versus Bournemouth.

Either Perez to McGinn, VVD to AWB or Haller to Barnes would be the downgrade needed

No, those players have to score a goal each to make it worthwhile. While Wilson scored versus city last season and while Perez looked just meh last game he still nearly got a goal and an assist. Best to do whichever you will be less annoyed about if it goes wrong

I can't imagine a few knocks from City take a big man like Haller out for more than one week. As a WH fan I thought Pelegrini was sending a disguised message to the refs about City's breaking up of the play and pretending that Haller's injury was worse than it was... until I saw he was omitted xD

Going back to your previous question you have 2 ft's yes ?
You need to fix Robinson , Wesley is a bit iffy but ok for now . You're bench is ok.
You could potentially just do 1 transfer Robinson to Cantwell and carry 2 over.

Get Kane and Cantwell. But it's only really worth bringing Kane in if you want to captain him . After all they are playing a dire side under a dire manager.
Both options give you cash ITB moving forward.

V true. Cheers. Just really want United assets especially after seeing how bad Palace were and I like their fixtures. Not keen on both Dendonk and Robinson. Could just simply do Aubam to Kane tbh but again want united. Ahhh idk

I don't want any Utd. I think they are fools gold and the wheels will come off pretty soon. They could easily have conceded against Chelsea and strangely enough even though The Blades kept a terrible Palace out I think they could sneak a goal at OT.

My gamble is Ceballos. Yes his next 2 fixtures aren't great but I think that he has a lot of fpl potential . People on here speak about him having competition from Ozil for his spot but Emery is no fan at all of Ozil.
Trossard is not a bad pick at all until they come up against City in a few games time.

Kane yes H) New, plus 2 more favourable home games in the next 5 games.
Liverpool play Arse & Chels in next 4, I've got TAA & sold Roberston to fund Perez to Martial. Don't think Liverpool clean sheets are as likely & Martial could become essential.
Interested why poster above thinks it's a mistake?

Getting rid of Robertson is a big risk imo. Yes Arsenal could score but after come Burnley and hapless Newcastle. Also getting him back is likely to cost you in hits.

Thanks for response, I transferred Robertson for Alderwerald who play hapless Newcastle plus 2 more favourable home games in next 5. Versus Liverpool who play arsenal & Chelsea. Admittedly he doesn't have the attacking returns potential but I think that's offset by the martial outscoring Perez who is also likely to go down in price tonight. Martial at 7.6 well 7.7 now as a MF with high points per match track record playing as a striker for a top 6 team looks like a bargain to me. Put it this way Robertson & Perez versus Alderwerald & Martial over the next 5GWs who will score the most points?

Im seeing it same way. Kane, Martial and AWB score a lot more than Aubam, Perez and Robo I think. If not then ahh well but won't be too huge.

My plan for this season. Attacking fullbacks, not AWB, midfielders better value than big hitting forwards, who owns Aguero? Plus budget forwards to match Kane's output.

Haha! Didn't even consider that, I mostly just read the comments. But even still, trying to predict who'll start at LB/RB at city long term is difficult. Same with spurs. Not convinced TAA is nailed either. Question marks over Man U defence. Tierney maybe when he's back?

Robertson, Pereira, TAA. I actually think Aarons could get into the action aswell.

2 attacking full backs plus VVD will outshine any thought of wanting just clean sheets.

That is why I will pass on AWB. Clean sheet plus attacking returns is gold. No clean sheet and attacking returns takes away the heart ache of no clean sheet.

That is why I have VVD and TAA set and forget. If they do not get a clean sheet then goal or assist makes up for it.

They will keep clean sheets too.

    1. Down with this sort of thin…

Aarons looks a great player, just less clean sheet potential for Norwich. I have room for a 4.5 and he's one of the options, but a bit put off as I also have Pukki/Cantwell.

AWB does't provide much going forward but a bonus point magnet if United clean sheet. Not convinced they'll get too many of them though this season, a wee bit of pressure applied and they look nervous.

What are people’s thoughts on Salah vs Mane

    A) Salah and 5.5m def such as AWB/Alderweireld/Zin
    or
    B) Mane and Laporte

    1. FOO FIGHTER
      27 days, 17 hours ago

You can have Mane but getting Salah, the biggest points hauler over the last 2 seasons into your team if you do not have him sees you have to get rid of the likes of Mane, maybe even having to get rid of Sterling to get him into your team unless you had Salah and Sterling from the start.

      Hope that clears things up.

Cross that bridge if/when I come to it. No guarantee I'll want him back, I think Mane could match/surpass Salah's total this year. Also, almost everyone in my mini league has Salah, I like having a different team

          1. FOO FIGHTER
            27 days, 16 hours ago

There will be no crossing that bridge. If you had Salah and got rid of him, you will take massive hits player and points wise to get him back.

            The end.

Good evening. Long time reader - first time poster. Now I need your help Community.

I’ve taken a 12 points hit to bring in Pukki, Martial, KdB and Lundstrom. Im not shy to take a few hits early on for bandwagons that look like possible season keepers/risers.

Now to the question: Since im all ready on -12, and my team definitely could prosper from a bit of further readjustment do I push the WC button or suffer the points loss?

    1. Down with this sort of thin…

I think yes, a -8 hit and I wake up in cold sweats. Good early moves for those four, did you get them before all their price increases?
Also, what were the other moves you were thinking?

Yep, got a good price rise this week.

        Team right now:

        Pope/Heaton

        Zinchenko, VVD, Digne, (Lundstrom, Rico)

        KdB, McGinn, Sterling, Salah, Martial

        Pukki, Jota (Wickham)

        Was thinking of something like:
        VVD->Söyuncu
        McGinn->Mount or Son
        Salah-Mané
        Heaton-Button
        Jota->Lacazette or Barnes
