Under 10% of Fantasy Premier League managers played their Wildcard for Gameweek 3.

After two weeks of the campaign, 6.8% of players worldwide pulled the trigger to create themselves a new squad.

That was 2.4% more than played their Wildcards in Gameweek 2, just 4.4% of managers shaking things up at the first hurdle.

Worldwide chip usage for Gameweek 3

So far, 11.3% of managers have played their Wildcards.

Not surprisingly, it was the most popular chip for Gameweek 3, as the majority of FPL players hope to use the others later in the campaign.

The Wildcard has certainly been the talk of the town in the Fantasy Football Scout community this week, so it is helpful to have a look at the Wildcard templates both overall and among the current top 10,000 managers.

Understandably, Sterling is the most popular player in Wildcards for Gameweek 3, chosen in 73.0% of them.

Following his four goals in two games, Teemu Pukki (£6.8m) is just behind the Manchester City man, currently sat in 61.2% of Wildcard squads.

Snapped up by a similar number of managers was Sheffield United’s budget option John Lundstram (£4.1m).

His 14-point haul in Gameweek 2 has convinced 61.2% of Wildcarders of his ability to offer value this season.

Despite much of the pre-season debate revolving around whether or not we should have Sterling or Kevin de Bruyne (£9.6m), those who have Wildcarded early simply asked ‘why not both?’

The Belgian midfielder is the second-most popular option in his position among those who went back to the drawing board for Gameweek 3.

These early-movers have also largely ditched Mohamed Salah (£12.5m), opting to spread the cash elsewhere.

In order to facilitate this, 46% of these managers have opted for Sadio Mané (£11.5m) as their coverage for the Liverpool attack.

They have also moved away from the Reds’ defence following a disappointing start to the season.

Virgil van Dijk (£6.5m) is the most fashionable of Liverpool stoppers with 36.5% presence in overall Wildcard squads for Gameweek 3, with Andrew Robertson (£7.0m) and Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.0m) not earning enough interest to make the top-five in this position.

Manchester United players are also proving popular, with Aaron Wan-Bissaka (£5.6m), Anthony Martial (£7.7m) and Marcus Rashford (£8.7m) in the template.

Number of chips used by managers in the current top 10k

Even though those currently in the upper echelons of the game are still, to some extent, skewed by chip usage, it is still interesting to see who some of these managers have turned to in order to press home their advantage.

Their Wildcard template picture is actually remarkably similar to the overall one, the only differences coming in the budget areas.

Lewis Dunk (£4.6m) has been turned to with no Liverpool defenders making the cut, while Todd Cantwell (£4.6m) is in 33.9% of top 10k Wildcard squads.

Just 10.2% of managers have used the Triple Captain so far, with 2.3% of them deploying it for Gameweek 3.

Kane appears to have been the chief recipient of this enhanced armband among the current top 10,000, while Sterling, Rashford and Mané also received attention for it.

I love mcginn and I love villa.. But he looked much more threatening last week when he blanked. Today almost everyone was complaining about him till the 95th minute. Feels weird seeing everyone calling him a bargain today after he barely got involved in the attack. Just saying...

Grealish very smart but a bit too 'unselfish' while McGinn loves going forward but sometimes he runs as if he's being chased. I'm still confident in Villa as a team though.

A lot of over reaction based on the result. Thought Everton unfortunate not to take a point. They created what looked like 3 big chances only for awful finishing to let them down. Fine margins!

Grealish, Jota, Haller and McGinn most impressed me. Grealish and McGinn very tidy in the middle without looking great FPL prospects.

Digne started well then faded. Not sure why Everton didn’t keep trying to feed him the ball as he was untracked at times.

Sold Digne this week as I think Everton have been fortunate to keep back to back clean sheets but he’ll be a great pick when they sort out their midfield two. It’s affecting Siggy also.

Neither. Not when there’s the potential of Mount and Ceballos. Around 5.5m you can get a very decent defender so I try to avoid 6-8m midfielders unless a Martial comes along.

      Fair summary

Have McGinn and will keep him for a few anyway while fixtures last. I'm content to see him popping up every 2/3 weeks at that price point.

Digne? Likewise sceptical of Everton defence - it's a worry when a team are lucky to keep Ayew and Benteke out 😉 But he's great going forward. Only Mendy back is likely to tempt me away.

Yes, no real need to sell Digne at all.

Liverpool fixtures improve from a defensive point of view over their next 4. He’ll need attacking returns if people aren’t going to hop onto VVD, Robbo and TAA.

          Yep

Pool will come back into fashion. Have Robbo - Everton and Pool of course dovetail home and away - seems a fair shout for a regular cs or so

I'm really happy with owning two of those. I don't think Grealish may be that huge when it comes to FPL assets but I really like the way he plays. Like you said though, everything can change. Owning an Everton defender is still a good option. It's the attack I'd be worried about.

Also, you mean Wesley instead of Haller, right?

Yeh fair enough, Everton looked a bit toothless at time imo, Wesley caused their defence a lot of problems.

yep, good game, Everton had a few chances but didn't put them away. Villa were clinical. Fair result

Wesley looked very good as a focal point and held the ball up well - not the most enticing comment for a fantasy player but at his price i think you could hang on a few more weeks.

Only players i'd like to see us switch is Taylor for Targett.

Rushing in KWP who'll play Arsenal & an often injured KDB before they play is a big no-no for me.

I'd rather wait, watch all 4 play and then find a 4.5m defender if you're still set on the moves.

Word of advice.. Try to avoid hits. There are always affordable alternatives for the players you want to remove and considering most sub 7 players get 4 ppg you are basically starting the gw with 10 players. Also players are just numbers.. Robertson will average maybe 1 ppg less than kdb and a good budget mid could outscored kwp by 1 ppg. Which means taking a hit may leave you behind. Just a thought. Ignore if needed

With the touches he gets, the time he spends in the final third then surely Digne is a sound bet long term ?
