Joe is joined by David and Karam for the latest episode of the Scoutcast tonight.

You can watch it on our YouTube channel from 8pm BST to 9pm BST.

This episode overlaps with the return of European football to our screens.

Liverpool and Chelsea take on Napoli and Valencia respectively as the Champions League group stages get underway on Tuesday night.

We will have Scout Notes on those matches on Wednesday, but for now, there’s a brand new episode of the Scoutcast to occupy your attention.

On tonight’s agenda are the best cheap defenders now that the premium ones have frustrated their owners.

We’ll also discuss how best to cover Manchester City in the wake of their surprise defeat at Norwich.

Finally, we’ll debate how to recover from a poor start to the season as many managers have endured a tough few weeks.

Barkley has the intelligence of Gascoigne and none of the skill

That's still pretty intelligent because Gazza was a genius. Score cheap points elsewhere.

A genius on the field yes but clearly that's not what I meant so go score your own cheap points somewhere else.

VAR no point of having a referee. The one sitting beind video evidince can disrupt the game by pressing a button and either getting it wrong or right. The VAR ref can even have a wistle via loud speaker.

The ref should drive around the pitch in a little robot with full access to all camera angles and air horns for whistles

Hence why those awards have lost credibility in recent years. They use an individual award to reward teams, not players. Last year's Ballon d'Or rankings were the funniest I've seen.

Does this lot need a WC - finding it very hard to decide and would appreciate opinions...

    Current team:
    Ryan/Button
    Robbo/Digne/Zinc/Lundstram/Rico
    Salah/Sterling/KDB/Mount/James
    Pukki/Barnes/Greenwood

    latest potential WC draft:
    Pope/Button
    Aurier/Tomori/Pieters/Lund/Rico
    Sterling/Mane/Son/James/Hayden
    Auba/Abraham/Pukki

Anything missing or changes that can be made? WC Draft.

    Pope
    TAA Aurier Digne
    Mane Sterling KDB Cantwell
    Wilson Abraham Pukki

Nice. Personally, I'm moving on from premium def, I think they have limited me this year by not getting the double digit hauls but you've squeezed a good team together. My preference is TAA > a 5.5/6 and Mane > Salah.

    3. Moderately content penguin
      7 years, 1 month ago

      Nice enough for sure

What’s your route to Son? Not KdB surely.

      1. Dynamic Duos
        7 years, 1 month ago

Yeah I will Mane Sterling Son, can't have them all and not going cheap cheap defence

        1. Moderately content penguin
          7 years, 1 month ago

          Ok

I have a relatively similar non WC set up in mind. I’m losing Sterling to get Son essentially and that puts me on Vardy too. I just don’t see Sterling outpacing KdB by anything like 2.5 and that cash (esp with Mane) gives you an extra premium.

Time will tell. But look at the last time KdB and Sterling both had a full (with Pep of course) season

          1. AndyCook
            7 years, 1 month ago

Anyone else had enough of Pool defense for now? Ended last year and started this year with 2, been on just TAA for a couple weeks now but the lack of clean sheets doesn't justify the money.

      1. Moderately content penguin
        7 years, 1 month ago

        Of course it will

Digne who’s had a moderate sort of start really is still matching all but 3 similarly priced mids after just two cs. It’s jyst a case of seeing it as a mid to long term play. Attacking defenders have a huge head start

Does the Rate My Team statistical model require an overhaul.
Slaughtered two weeks in a row by other mini league members with significantly inferior team ratings

Short answer is probably yes to some extent but equally 2 weeks is not a large sample size and over small Sample sizes Actual points vs Expected points can vary wildly

yeah I'm absolutely outraged it also doesn't give next week's lottery results!!!

Jake Humphries can hush. "Barkley hasn't taken a penalty in 3 years."

He took about 50 in pre-season & also in shootouts.

Not really. Son positive play, but looked a bit like the Chelsea of last season in terms of not being able to finish, later on in the match.

Mount's injury did hurt us. He presses like a madman, and that was lost.

Tammy was in good positions and got some shots off. Could have done better on occasion, but was marked well.

Pedro poor. Willian good. Azpi can't cross. Alonso actually decent. Defense was better, but got lucky once or twice.

    1. CostaCoffee
      7 years, 1 month ago

He tried to play on afterwards but only last about 3 mins, he was hobbling around. Not serious serious but I wouldn’t be surprised if he missed a few games

Tomori our standout defender again, probably our best player tonight alongside Jorginho. Could be nice pick up next week when Kante returns

Too risky to triple up on Chelsea with upcoming fixtures
