We take our regular look back at the Premier League line-ups from the weekend just gone, analysing the systems and personnel used by the 20 top-flight clubs and seeing what lessons could be learned ahead of Gameweek 6.

The article has taken a slightly different format this week as we harness the use of the average position maps in our Members’ Area.

The figures in brackets given after each player name correspond to the numbered shirts in the position maps.

Members can read on for further analysis, while those wishing to subscribe can still do so by clicking here – memberships cost £17.50 for the remainder of 2019/20 and a video of the benefits can be accessed here.

Anybody that thinks Sterling wont start v WAT is deluded imo. They are 5 points behind LIV so no way he doesnt start his best attackers in both Sterling and Aguero. If I didnt own Kun, Sterling would def be my armband pick! He's due a haul and he has previous v Watford!

I’d say Aguero even though i don’t own him, it could honestly go either way though, Pep may want to involve sterling more to get his confidence back up as well i reckon before his rest after the weekend.

No. the doubt is over him starting. If he has a 20% chance of a cameo then captaining him is dangerous.

      6 years, 9 months ago

      My only concern would be:
Sterling rested, Mendy to play left back who is basically left wing and Mahrez coming from the right.
Bilva can fit in anywhere. Rodri to play deep and KDB and Dilva supporting Kun.

      1. Salah’s Sonnet
        • 14 Years
        6 years, 9 months ago

I really don’t think Pep would risk starting Mendy from the off when he needs to be a bit more defensive minded, which Zinchenko offers, Sterling is the best man for the position and Pep needs the win and to make a statement.

Sterling had the armband for the last 2 matches for me.. Massive disappointment.. He's out of form and goodluck to anyone giving him the armband.
And those who think Sterling should play for City to win are also deluded..City do not depend on any particular player and Bernardo can do a better job on his days.

Of course they depend on their best players (same as any team), taking Sterling, KDB or Kun out of that team weakens them significantly.

Ha ha, there will be scenes like. Crap, just realised it's league cup midweek and not champions league. That does make a big difference because he will definitely be rested for that so why would he be rested for 10/11 days? Would make sense he plays at the weekend

If he starts Sterling and he gets injured due to playing twice a week, City can forget about the title.
Last week KDB was rested. In the CL it was Kun & Bernardo's turn.
I see Sterling coming off the bench this week, but hey, who knows with Pep!

      1. Salah’s Sonnet

They’re peak fitness footballers, playing twice a week is nothing, and Sterling hardly ever comes off the bench, he either starts or not at all.

          • 12 Years
          6 years, 9 months ago

It is a fact playing 2 games a week with the intensity Pep plays, will have a negative affect. He has the squad to rotate. Hence the reason we never surely know what Pep will do.
I loved watching the underdog give it to them last week, even at the expense of Fantasy points. However, to say Norwich were the better side is stretching it. Shocker errors cost Citeh with KDB on the bench.

well with that defense errors will occur more often so needs his best attacking players (Sterling also one of their best defensive assets of the attacking players if you get my meaning)

I would wonder how much Sterling misses Sané? I have no numbers on this but memory keeps making pictures of Sané putting the ball on a plate for Sterling to tap it in, like a silent movie on endlessly repeat.

Saturday, Wednesday, Saturday is 3 games a week plus Sterling played twice for England during the international week. He is at risk of being benched, if you have Aguero he is by far the safer captain pick having only played against Norwich and no international duty

Sterling hasn’t been benched yet this season

Either Pep now views him as nailed

      Or a benching is imminent

I fancy Liverpool Chelsea to be a goal fest anyways so might just captain Mo

      1. Salah’s Sonnet

Liverpool & Chelsea played a day earlier and play a day later that city - that’s huge in & of itself

They’ll also both want reactions to bad results, and neither can defend at the minute - goals written all over it imo

Mo & Tammy hopefully front & centre

City have a 68 hour turnaround which you’d have to think would give Pep a dose of the roulette wheels

a bit harsh on a defense that have 4 goals conceded in 5 games is it? while not as good as last year still decent, and away games is one conceded and that was a freak error that won´t happen every week. Klopp will view this as a game he needs to win and will play more solid and the result will not be a goalfest but rather a 0-2 win for Pool.

Nope - on the eye test Adrian is a shambles and even VVD has started to look shaky playing in front of him

Even statistically - Man Utd have a better XGc than them

Klopp views every game he ever plays as one he has to win - he’ll view his as one to get a reaction to a bad defeat, as Will Lamps

    10. bench boost for every gamew…
      • 9 Years
      6 years, 9 months ago

I think i agree with you, not that people are deluded if they think he is rested but that he offers pace which in reality none of the other players do. Pep needs to play him in the same manner that he has to play Laporte. In a tactical sense Sterling is more important than KDB, when Sané is out.. I think if Sterling is played minute in and minute out City will suffer though, as he will be exhausted. If one could bet on Sterling withdraws from international duty next time around i would bet all my savings!

If one talks pro the people who think he is rested, the case for tat could be that Sterling the only one played IB plus both games this week.

i think you nailed the difference from last season (also it weakens City a lot but that is not mentioned a lot imo, Sané out is a huge loss for Pep). Albeit not a regular starter he has qualities that offers something different and this have implications tactically.

    Dear all

I have been doing relatively well so far (OR is 825) and my team is:

    Pope/Heaton
    VVD/Coleman/Zinchenko/Dunk/Lundstrom
    Sterling/Salad/KDB/Cantwell/Dendoncker
    Abraham/King/Pukki

    I have 2 FTs and 1.6 ITB

I am seriously considering the following:

    1. Sterling and King out, to Aguero and a mid less than 7.9m.
    2. Sterling, King, VVD out to Aguero, Son and Defender less than 4.8m for a -4.

The fact that Sterling played 90mins mid week and Aguero was an unused sub really makes me think Aguero is the way to go. However, everyone has Sterling and if he delivers I will drop significantly. Any views?

I’ve practically the same team and 2.6 million, can’t work that one out lol.

Anyway, i like option B, if for a minus 4 then just about, but couldn’t hurt waiting a week i’d say.

It is a nice rank to have. Well done. My question was the chips as the team you have would not get you to that position.
Remember, after such an awful gameweek for many, they don't want to hear success stories. We are all human.

Don't ask but I am on my free hit chip.
With 2 transfers I got in Mount Auba and Son for a minus 4. I took a big chance doing an early tfr as I had exact money. The rest is History, leaving me with Mount as a non starter after wasting 4 points.
I messed around with my squad and a buddy of mine thought it funny to press the FH button. (GRRR). Now I have a dilemma. All the advice for a WC is not helping. I need it for a free hit.
    Gunn
(Rico Lund) TAA Digne Ota (3 of those I had already)
KDB Son Lanzini Djenepo (Hayden) Djenepo a punt
    Kun Auba Pukki
Any glaring errors? I have .3 to play with if I make bench downgrades.

Could you downgrade defence to a point where Mané is an option?

I've been struggling with defenders all week - Mings, Aurier, Maitland......

I would love Mane but he is not a captain option and I think Son is reasonably close to What Mane will give.

Have 2FT and was set to downgrade Robbo to upgrade DSilva to KDB or Son. Now tempted to WC. Also DSilva looks like he'll start. Go with the original 2FT plan? Also waiting on Mount news.

    Pope
    TAA, Robbo, Digne, Zinc
    Sterling, Salah, DSilva, Mount
    Wilson, Pukki

    Button, Dend, Greenwood, Rico

    Have
    Pope 4.0
    TAA Otamendi Digne (Lund Rico)
    Salah Sterling KDB Cantwell (Luiz)
    Haller Pukki Barnes

Desperate to get Aguero in with form , fixtures captaincy
How about Aguero Son and Maitland-Niles for Sterling Haller and Digne
    Can do this exactly.

A lot are going to the forward line due to decent choices in mid range pricing opportunities.
Mids have 9.5 upwards decent picks and 6.5 downwards too. Forwards fill the pricing gap.

Auba guaranteed minutes and now central with great fixtures.
There will always be a lingering doubt with Kun, always looking at CL games to see if he is rested.
Take away the stress by getting Auba

He slotted in at left back and instantly reminded us what he can provide, with some low-drilled crosses that are more like KDB-esque whipped passes from the left.

As a fan I'm excited to see him come back, against sides that sit deep his burst of pace and first-touch whipped crosses make him 100x more effective than Zinchenko how slows the game down by cutting inside. Obv he can get caught out positionally, but I can see him starting most games soon. I'm gonna wait to see what happens with Watford, but after that he's on my radar for sure.
