After consecutive red arrows and at least a couple of my players having apparently outstayed their welcome, it feels like action is needed with my team and, yet, I’m doing my best to try and do nothing.

Doing nothing should be a perfectly acceptable strategy in Fantasy Premier League, in fact, doing nothing can offer all sorts of advantages, so why is doing nothing so difficult?

One answer might be found in an appropriately-themed study of goalkeepers and penalties conducted by Israeli psychologist Michael Bar-Eli.

Bar-Eli studied hundreds of penalties faced by elite goalkeepers and found that, in attempting to save the penalty, goalkeepers tend to dive left or right about 94% of the time.

Deciding how to make transfers is somewhat similar to goalkeepers having to save penalties

However, crunching the data, Bar-Eli also discovered that about 60% of penalties actually go down the centre of the goal, meaning that, if goalkeepers just remained central instead of diving they would, on average, save more penalties.

Most surprising, however, was the finding that, even after these elite goalkeepers were made aware of these stats, they still continued to dive left or right when facing penalties.

Bar-Eli concluded that this was a manifestation of ‘Action Bias’; a cognitive bias describing an impulse to take action in order to feel ‘in control’ of a situation or problem.

Sometimes, as the goalkeeper study suggests, we prefer to take action even when we know the best strategy is to do nothing and this compulsion is particularly strong when the ‘norm’ or expectation is that we should take action.

In other words; it’s easier to justify action than inaction, and taking action makes us feel better than doing nothing.

Haller has been frustrating to own but I still fancy West Ham’s Gameweek 11 fixture

It’s not hard to see how this bias can manifest itself among Fantasy managers, particularly after a poor Gameweek.

In some respects, it is the psychological basis for ‘knee-jerking’ or transferring players out based on emotion.

Looking at my team, it’s harder to justify keeping the likes of Bournemouth’s Callum Wilson (£8.0m) and West Ham’s Sébastian Haller (£7.4m) after several blanks each than it would be to switch either out for somebody who seems to be in better form, and the compulsion is to do exactly that.

Of course, the flipside to this is that, around this time last week, owners of Leicester’s Ayoze Pérez (£6.1m) would have looked at their teams and thought exactly the same thing.

Now, by no means is Perez scoring a hat-trick conclusive evidence of the benefits of doing nothing but it does offer a timely illustration that doing nothing can really pay off.

I’d say this is more likely to occur if the player in question has a good fixture and, with Wilson hosting a Manchester United team without a clean sheet in five matches and Haller at home to 17th-place Newcastle, hat-tricks might not be on the cards but I wouldn’t bet against them scoring either.

Perhaps more general are the benefits of banking an extra transfer and I’m a big believer in two transfers being exponentially better than one.

Here is how I line up for Gameweek 11

This week, with only one transfer currently available, I have limited forward options to replace Wilson or Haller, none of whom have very compelling fixtures either this week and/or in upcoming Gameweeks, or taking a hit.

If I wait until next week, I get the benefit of my players’ decent fixtures this Gameweek and practically unlimited options for their replacement(s), meaning I can get the player(s) I want, with the fixtures to deliver.

If I’m really lucky, Wilson and Haller hit form, I get some points and I end up with a transfer headache next week.

Ultimately, while too much inertia can be as damaging as too much action, judiciously doing nothing with a view to it paying off over several Gameweeks can be a very viable strategy if you can fight the short term instinct to knee-jerk.

So, this Gameweek, I’m standing still, fingers crossed, hoping that the FPL gods aren’t aiming left or right.

Three wins on the bounce, following a credible draw with Liverpool, has seen a lot of talk within the community about whether or not Manchester United have turned a corner.

Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial are looking dangerous again, whilst Daniel James has also shown moments of real quality, providing assists in back to back Gameweeks.

Suddenly, the fixtures ahead look tempting, so are you now interested in United’s attacking assets, or should we not get carried away?

Sounds sensible, out of nowhere Bournemouth seem to have found some defensive resilience... only Liverpool have conceded fewer shots in the box over the last three Gameweeks, and they've given up just two big chances over the same period.

I wont be putting any of their players in my team. They cannot score vs teams who defend with a low block - they also concede most matches.

They are more expensive than Leicester/Chelsea assets who are much better value

I've decided to hold fire just until after the Bournemouth and Partizan fixture. I have no doubts that if Martial and Rashford both perform in these games, especially Saturday's then they will become hot property.

What's deterring me is no Pogba pulling the strings. An in form Pogba is what is missing in that midfield and I can't see where the creativity can come from in the middle of the park. I kind of hope they do as a continuous shake-up to the template adds more excitement to the game

The win stats with Martial in the team and out of the team since Ole took over tell a lot (its like 70/30)...we are such a better attack when he plays.
I will give it another two GWs before committing to a MUN asset though and that would likely be Martial in my set up unless Vardy gets injured.

Agree with most of the people here. Want to see more if I am going to sell someone for Utd players. I want to bring in Martial more then Rashford, but it would have to be instead of Son or Maddison and still not prepare to do that. If Son blanks again and one of Martial or Rash goes crazy then I can see myself doing it. They have great fixture run but it is United so...

Rashford and Maguire are the ones for me.

Boly injury was a blow and Auba has to go and I have coverage on all the decent defences already. United have the fixtures hence the Maguire lure and it's either Rashford or Kane but it looks like Rashford can match him for 2.5 less.

Bringing Martial in next week, with those fixtures and playing centre forward and classed as a midfielder it seems a no brainer. He is a clinical finisher and the only worry is his injury record but if he starts racking up a few points before the masses have spotted him could give me a nice climb up the rankings.

Long story short - absolutely not. The same questions were asked when they beat Chelsea back in August and we all know how that ended. People buying their defense and Martial... Now it's the same old story all over again, they won 3 games in 3 different competitions with Rashford and Martial scoring goals and all of a sudden everybody thinks they are back or whatever. The truth is, they will let you down, sooner rather than later. I learned my lessons with Man Utd players, don't buy them just because everybody is talking about them and they have a "nice run of fixtures", because that means nothing for them.

Around 7.5m, there's Martial, DSilva and Maddison. No-one appeals more expensive than this until we get to the Son, KdB class. Below 7.5m there's James, Perez, Barnes, Grealish at 6m.

The downside of doing nothing is reflected in your team value. Simon is presently on 101.5 M , mine is 104.3.
In the latter stages could be be an issue?

I may have taken many hits so far but my TV and SV is looking good.

Now I am about 4 transfers away from a starting eleven which I feel won't need any changes fot the forseeable future plus a fully playble bench incl GK.

Hoepefully value of my team will keep on growing to make my next WC a pleasure.

Haha - but you were solid on Kun (c) a few days ago, we must stay strong!
My problem lies in moves after this week. I won't captain a city player, but I'm happy to keep one attacker, but is that KDB or Sterling. For what its worth I'm not sure A will work out this week assuming you bench Connolly.

Didn't see you had 2ft. In which case you are in quite a healthy position. Would you want Vardy next week? You will sell Kun after this week - so maybe you can go B without fear - but its 2ft to make you sweat a bit less 🙂

Shaky at the back? No-one has conceded less and a few of the goals they have conceded were Adrian howlers. Extremely unlucky not to have had more CSs.

I'll tell you what makes doing nothing difficult in FPL.

The constant daily price rises, drawing you in to check the game every single day and pricing you out of standard moves.

I just check at the end of the week, I now find it pointless sitting there every day checking and being disappointed by price rises for me.

I log out after the last gw has ended and then check back towards the start of the next gw. I find that works so much better for me anyway
