International Football

Which FPL assets are on international duty and when do they play?

A week of international football gets underway on Wednesday and, as ever, there will be plenty of Premier League representation across the world over the coming seven days.

We’ve put together our usual club-by-club guide to which players will be away with their nations, detailing the countries they are representing and when their matches are scheduled for.

There are a few notable omissions from the list below, with several well-owned Fantasy Premier League assets having a welcome fortnight off.

Jamie Vardy (£9.6m) called time on his England career last year, while David Silva (£7.6m) has also retired from international duty with Spain.

Anthony Martial (£7.7m) and Alexandre Lacazette (£9.3m) have been overlooked by Didier Deschamps, while right-backs Aaron Wan-Bissaka (£5.4m) and Kyle Walker (£5.9m) aren’t part of Gareth Southgate’s England squad.

Mohamed Salah (£12.3m) and Andrew Robertson (£7.0m) weren’t meant to have a two-week recuperation period, of course, but both Liverpool assets have withdrawn from their respective countries’ squads over the last few days.

Salah’s bothersome ankle has seen him ruled out of Egypt’s forthcoming internationals but only after the premium midfielder had travelled to Africa for a consultation with the national team doctor and head coach.

Salah had been pictured with ice on his ankle after the Gameweek 12 win over Manchester City and was spotted wearing a protective boot when joining up with his country on Tuesday.

A statement from the Egyptian FA said:

After medical tests, Mohamed Salah will not play against Kenya and The Comoros. The injury needs a period of treatment to recover.

Robertson, along with Ryan Fraser (£7.0m) and Scott McTominay (£5.1m), withdrew from the Scotland squad on Tuesday.

The Liverpool left-back himself said:

For the last two and a half weeks, I’ve not trained at all for Liverpool. I’ve trained the day before a game, could only play the last 15 minutes against Genk in the Champions League and missed the Arsenal game in the League Cup.

It’s a niggling injury which won’t go away unless I give it time. My ankle was already injured when a tackle from Rodri on me late in the game against Manchester City on Sunday opened it up again.

I was already a doubt for Scotland but, unfortunately, that made it even worse. I don’t want to pick up more injuries and ruin my season because of it. The call has been made and it has been taken out of my hands. It hurts as captain to miss out. I know a lot has been said about these two games being meaningless but we don’t believe that.

The in-form Christian Pulisic (£7.4m) won’t be part of the USA’s squad for their CONCACAF Nations League games over the next week, meanwhile.

Pulisic picked up a hip injury in the win over Crystal Palace and USA head coach Gregg Berhalter said:

This was a collaborative decision with the club looking after the best interest of the player. These decisions are always difficult because this group and the coaching staff want nothing more than to have Christian here, but it was a risk we weren’t willing to take at this time.

At the time of writing, Raul Jimenez (£7.3m) is still on course to be representing Mexico in their own CONCACAF Nations League ties.

Jimenez picked up a leg injury in the dying stages of Sunday’s win over Aston Villa but has reported for international duty, with a decision still to be made on his involvement in games against Panama and Bermuda.

The last of those games takes place in the early hours of Wednesday morning in Mexico so, if he is involved, a late flight back to England awaits Jimenez ahead of Wolves’ Gameweek 13 meeting with Bournemouth the following Saturday.

Looking on the positive side for his owners, on just one occasion has Jimenez been benched by Nuno Espirito Santo after international duty (March 2019).

Elsewhere on the long-haul flight watch, DeAndre Yedlin (£4.4m), Steven Alzate (£4.5m), Yerry Mina (£5.4m), Davinson Sanchez (£5.3m) and Jefferson Lerma (£4.8m) are all due to feature for their respective countries just after midnight on Wednesday.

Brazil and Argentina are in international friendly action in the Middle East, rather than the Americas, so the Premier League players in action for those two countries at least have a little longer to recover from their exertions given the time difference.

Sergio Aguero (£12.0m), recalled by Argentina, will face teammate Gabriel Jesus (£9.5m) in Riyadh this Friday.

Son Heung-min‘s (£9.6m) South Korea side will encounter Brazil next Tuesday afternoon in Abu Dhabi, having played Lebanon in a World Cup qualifier five days beforehand.

Sadio Mane (£12.1m) and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang‘s (£11.0m) international duty will be done by Sunday, with both premium FPL assets representing their countries in 2021 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.

The 22 Premier League-based players in England’s squad will also be packed up early, with the Three Lions taking on Montenegro and Kosovo on Thursday and Sunday.

Raheem Sterling (£12.0m), of course, won’t be featuring for Gareth Southgate’s side in the first of those games, having clashed with Joe Gomez (£5.1m) in training.

Looking ahead to GW14 and want to get 3 Pool players in. Have the following options.

    A. Robo, Mane, TAA. (gives me a benching headache in defense until GW18)
    B. Robo, Mane, Salah. (Salah would be for KDB and no City cover)

Gareth says Sterling will play against Kosovo. But what happens if they qualify as expected against Montenegro? Surely calls will be placed, Pep asking kindly that maybe his overworked players be allowed a breather... I'm sure Klippity Klopp would like to see TAA sit that one out too.

    Is Southgate that rational?

It's the team you put in place early in the week so that if you're hit by a bus you're not fielding a duff XI

Sitting out a game is a breather. I expect Gareth would use 3 or 4 squad players, bed in newbies, but I'd expect Sterling to not only lead the way but possibly be given the armband. Trent could well sit it out.

trent and trippier have so far played a game each in the last few international breaks i expect that to continue.

I think sterling plays no matter the situation just to show that southgate has faith in him and all is forgiven i dunno about the armband tho

Mount - always play such an attacker from a top 6 team ahead of your 4th def, especially when the def is against one of the traditional ‘top 6’

Think I am going to triple up on SHU. Will then also have triple Pool, LEI, and double CHE.

Other 4 players each from a different team.

Who you looking at? Hendo, Lundy and Mousset? Easily benchable assets there, allows you to invest elsewhere.

      1. FOO FIGHTER

Double SHU defence. Have Lundstram and Mousset already.

    2. GuenDoozy
      28 days, 35 mins ago

I am considering this myself. Mousset (Bench option for the Christmas period), Hendo and Lundy.

I am also considering triple Chelsea attack. 4 very juicy home games in 6 games from GW14 -19. Tammy, Pulisic owner, might get Willian.

Yes, it all looks sensible. Sheff U, Chelsea and Leicester assets are priced so that you can afford Liverpool and City premiums.

        1. GuenDoozy
          27 days, 23 hours ago

Willian over Martial/Maddison you think? Own Vardy, Chilwell, Tammy and Pulisic.

Those fixtures just look too good.

          1. GuenDoozy
            27 days, 23 hours ago

And it allows me enough Itb to do Greenwood > Mousset. Martial/Maddi wouldn't, I would be able to afford a 4.4 defender for Kelly though.

I'd marginally call Maddy over Willian but if the rest works out, go for Willian. I'm giving Brandon Williams a couple of weeks to see if he nails his place in the United defence. 4m now - I'll wait and pay 4.2 if he's nailed. Otherwise, a 4.4 defender could come from Newcastle or Palace.

It's interesting to see how late many of the City players return compared to ther sides. Could be a little under par for the crucial Chelsea tie.

It’s amazing what a few days reflective thinking does for you.
I was all set to sell Sterling after his blank. But a quick look at his stats and the eye test. The armband is on him. This is the perfect game as well; should be high scoring on both side.

but don't see a better (c) option than him this week. It will definitely be a high scoring game. I think we will see 5+ goals in that one total

        1. GuenDoozy
          28 days, 12 mins ago

Its also that I need cash for buying another starter for the Christmas period + City attack is the most susceptible to rotation. Currently stuck with Kelly, Cantwell and Greenwood in my take. So Sterling > Son will give me enough to upgrade one.

I don't think Frank will be gung-ho against City. Can see him playing back 5 of Azpi, Tomori and Zouma with James and Emerson as wing backs. With Kante back playing with Jorgi and Kova in midfield and Abraham and Pulisic up front. William often doesn't play after international breaks anyway. The extra man at the back, Kante back in midfield and a counter-attacking plan may reduce goals quite a lot. Bilva presumably suspended also.

just watched ManU - Brighton highlights, it shoud have been Rash hattrick. They were superb, such a contrast to Bournemouth game. So I am keeping a very close eye on that away game at Sheffield, it they will show Brighton game form there, then I will consider doubling up on Rash and Martial. Thoughts? anyone jumping on the same train?

    1. Jullepuu

GW 18 is a bit of concern, Pool blank, Chelsea playing away at Spurs(ok , can see goals there) and Leicester away at City. Tough gameweek that will be.

Okay, Lets try this again... don't know what happened there.... Need some constructive comments and opinions, please.

Seasons been okay for me so far (OR around 260K) I guess,
but not sure about Salah at the moment, his ankle injury seems quite persistent, and I think I'll have to let him go for now.
Haller has to go as well as his team struggles to deliver.

    My team at the moment:
    Pope
    Soy - Robertson - Lundstram
Maddison - Salah - De Bruyne - Mount
    Vardy - Haller - Abraham

Bench: Ryan - Yarmo - Rico -Dunk
    1 FT and 0.1 itb

The PLAN is to take a -4 hit:
    Salah to Mane
    Haller to Jimenez

Any thoughts or comments would be appreciated. Thanks!

That was a fine performance by Ireland, and they will definitely take away a lot of positives from the game. Great to see Doherty (I swear guys, you butcher his name again on stream and I'll call the police) get a goal.
