Six-time top 5k finisher Utkarsh Dalmia – aka Zophar –  talks us through the Liverpool options after Double Gameweek 24 was confirmed.

With Utkarsh drawing heavily on stats from our Members Area, a large chunk of this article is available only to subscribers.

It’s been a tough Christmas period. Games have been coming thick and fast and with the turnaround so short between fixtures, Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers have barely enough time to digest the information from one Gameweek before another is upon us.

The confirmation that Liverpool and West Ham will enjoy a Double Gameweek 24 (due to their postponed fixture in Gameweek 18) has grabbed headlines and, given Liverpool’s dominant form in the league, surely three assets is almost a requirement. Their players are already highly owned:

  • Virgil van Dijk (£6.4m) – 39.5% ownership
  • Sadio Mané (£12.3m) – 37.7% ownership
  • Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.4m) – 34.1% ownership
  • Mohamed Salah (£12.3m) – 24.7% ownership
  • Andrew Robertson (£7.0m) – 18.9% ownership

The ownership indicates that most teams already feature at least one of Mané or Salah with at least one Liverpool defender. The question before managers then is where to invest in for the third asset: attack or defence?

Despite conceding the fewest goals in the league (14), Liverpool have kept just six clean sheets, approximately one every third game. They registered a total of 20 shut-outs last season, an average of just over one every two games, so there has definitely been some regression there. However, it is worth mentioning that they have banked four clean sheets in as many matches since Joe Gomez (£5.1m) was partnered alongside van Dijk, so there are signs of improvement and their defence definitely warrants investment.

Their two full-backs are compared using the Comparison Tool in the Members Area for the last six Gameweeks, with Robertson on the left and Trent on the right in the below graphic:

An FPL veteran of 10 seasons, Utkarsh Dalmia has been a member of the site right since 2009 and has finished in the top 5k in six of those campaigns, with a best finish of 17th in 2010. A Chelsea fan based in India, he relies heavily on statistics for his FPL decision-making process.

i think Abraham is more nailed than we think, so no rest imo, but a lot of games lately so maybe. I would sell on the merit of who you think do best over the next period bar any rests, Jimenez looks a good shout. Cheaper options.could also match Jimenez.

[repost as, last time, i did on the old post]

It's time for Grealish to leave my squad. Btw, disappointedly, Kane has not done good enough as differential to Rashford.

    Gazza
TAA - Soyuncu - Kelly ... (Lundy, Tomori)
    Mane - KDB - Alli - Grealish ... (Cantwell)
    Vardy - Jimenez - Kane

2 FTs now and wondering what move I should do.

    (A) Grealish --> Traore (wat / NEW / sou)
    (B) Kane + Grealish --> Rashford + Martial .. the next two (ars / NOR) look good, then changing on GW23. too much united?
    (C) Kane + Grealish --> Sterling + DCL or Ayew .. this will make it easy to get Salah on DGW24

Hmmm - I'm always in favour of "outside of the box" thinking (especially on FFS aka template.com), but if you go with B I'd consider getting to this team over the next few GWs with FT and hits and keeping the WC in tact. Is a massive weapon (or should be!) over the DGW/blank season.

The teams differ mainly due to Pool mids or Pool defenders. I posted something below that would have a material impact on decision making. You went a step further with 3 Pool defenders. Like anything, what can hurt you the most by your choice, Probably no Pool forward cover.

  12. Eze Really?
    • 12 Years
    6 years, 7 months ago

    Thinking about the Pool DGW.
Obviously they are assets worthy of getting for a DGW, but let us look at the pros and cons strategies:
    1) If you are aiming for 3 Pool assets anyway, then fair enough; it is not disrupting plans. If you are not, the net cost is 8 points and probably more due to needing a double tfr to make the move in and another 8 to get out.
    2) 2 forwards and 1 defender. The most popular choice due to ceiling. The trouble is, it takes 25% of your funds to do it.
    3) 2 defenders and 1 forward. Eminently more affordable but lower ceilings and both games are away from home.
    4) Remember there is only 1 captain pick and it is inevitable all FPL managers will have at least one Pool player. Therefore the captaincy is somewhat down to luck and has no bearing. On top of that, 2 forwards at those prices will force most teams to move one out to get team balance back again.
    5) Arithmetic says 8 points average for a forward and 6 for a top defender per game are what can be expected. That is being generous as the games are away from home. It looks so appealing to get 3 pool when your net gain will average out at 8 points. One can get lucky, but one can get unlucky too.
    6) Rotation is something to be considered too. Pool may have another 9/12 points in the bag by GW24. Will Klopp be planning to rest players at this time and avoid too many games in 4 days. It could be FPL managers will resemble sick parrots at this point.
    7) There are many appealing fixture this particular GW. Who are you moving out? Citeh, Foxes, Spurs and Manc players all have good fixtures and could perform very closely to Pool counterparts.

In conclusion, it could be wise not to take on 3 Pool assets as the gains are exaggerated; certainly if you go 2 Pool forwards this GW. Personally I will probably go Robbo and TAA with one of Mane and Salah. I may want the likes of Son, KDB, Sterling, Alli, Martial well before GW24. If you go 2 pool only it really is not a bad shout.

look at fixtures beyond 24.. no need to sell so that calculated points you are referring to is not necessarily something to consider.

your points are good bar that one, we tend to get blinded by DGW´s don´t we?

My strategy was to get in early on them and vs leicester i was so close to really bang it, if they had converted those chances in first half i would be 40 points better or something..

Good for you mate. It is an opinion only. I do feel all the points listed have common sense behind them. I have been in the top 1k twice too and went for the common choice, scared to lose ground. That went wrong. I did better when going with facts rather than the croud. A lot will go the 2 mids way. All I am saying is there are plenty of alternatives.

I agree, I think also an important factor is team value as well which helps with getting premium players. I also have a lot of value in my defenders (Lund, Soy, Kelly) which I’d lose to bring in Robertson

A point I did ignore. I also have value but Tomori I can sacrifice. I will have to sacrifice Son for 2 Pool mids too and I believe him to be a great pick outside of DGW's and could be a slight differential.

The offside law has been shown up by VAR. Although VAR is not 100% accurate, it is still more accurate than the human eye. The practical difficulty of applying the law has led to all the forensic use of VAR.

If the lawmakers want to introduce guidance on the forensic use of VAR then they are basically introducing a margin of error into the law, but through the back door (rather than the front door by changing the offside law itself).

Personally think there is a simple solution to it. Just change the law so that it says:

      (i) you are only offside if no part of your person (whether it is a part that can be legally used to score or not) is not in line with or behind at least two players when the ball is played forward; and
(ii) where VAR is in use, it must be obvious to the naked eye, after the lines are drawn, that there is clear space between the attacker and the defender.

That way you reduce the number of contentious offsides that are not obvious in the first place and you take away the forensic use of VAR because in many cases it will not be obvious once the lines are drawn, to the naked eye, that a player is offside.

      1. Eze Really?
        • 12 Years
        6 years, 7 months ago

        This^
VAR is partly the culprit. Offside laws are mostly the culprit.
        Give the attacker the benefit.
Get rid of lines and use the human eye.
Only us 1 part of the body as the margin. (The head, the chest) or daylight between players)
One thing for sure, it has killed the emotion in game to a certain extent.

    Choose between:

    A) VVD > TAA today, for a -4

    or

    B) VVD > TAA in GW 22, for free

Option B is only possible if TAA doesn't rise tonight so I'll be monitoring that.

    Thanks 🙂

Thanks, I think that is my preference too, just have to keep an eye on the potential price rise.

    Ryan
    Rico Soy TAA
    Salah(c) KDB Grealish Martial Traore
    Kane Vardy(vc)

    Button Kelly Greenwood Lundy

I have 1FT and 0.1itb how does it look??

    Cheers!

    Hi all,

    B: Kelly (Nor)

    1: Zaha (nor)
    2: Cantwell (CRY)

    Ryan,
    TAA, Soy, Aurier,
    Mane, KDB, Alli, Grealish
    Vardy, Rashford, Jimi

    Button, Rico, Lund, Dendo

Next GW is it worth -4 hit to do Grealish & Aurier > Traore & Robbo before price rises. 1.4M itb currently.

I really like him for the City game though! He is everything their centre backs hate - strong, quick, relentless work rate. Only concern is whether Everton as a team get far enough up the pitch so that he is not isolated.

    1. Gazzaniga Grealish Maddison

    2. Fabianski Martial Traore

    **** Woodman

    TAA Robertson Lord Soy Kelly

    Mané Dele KDB. ****. *****

    Calvin-Lewis. Vardy. Rashford

On 1 at the moment have exact money for no.2 but would need to take a hit for Grealish today or probably priced out.

With all the arguments over which is the best Liverpool triple up, I decided to look into it myself, comparing the double up of Mo+Mane v TAA+Robbo over the last 10 gameweeks.

Salah (left) + Mane (right) = total points

    GW 10 - 5 + 7
    GW 11 - 12 + 2
    GW 12 - 7 + 8
    GW 13 - 9 +
    GW 14 - 2 +
    GW 15 - 15 +
    GW 16 - 0 +
    GW 17 - 6 +
    GW 18 - Blank
    GW 19 - 6 +
    GW 20 - 11 +

TAA (left) + Robbo (right) = total points

    GW 10
    GW 11
    GW 12
    GW 13
    GW 14
    GW 15
    GW 16
    GW 17
    GW 18
    GW 19
    GW 20

Actually, it didn't - you had Mane and Salah on the wrong sides

But everyone wants Mane and TAA. The choice is between Salah vs Robbo vs Firmino for the third Liverpool spot.

Firmino vs salah away games - do yourselves a favour and have a look in the comparison tool

Firmino scares me to death as an FPL player

How a forward can notch 10 blanks in 12 starts is beyond me.... let alone one who costs almost 9.5.... let alone one who gets those starts in the Liverpool attack

Ha, yeah i agree on that front but his away record is far better than Salah - both dgw games are away so if it’s a move for the double gw alone then I think it’s something to consider.

I personally don’t want to rip up a balanced team for an overpriced mid.

Considering the fixtures thereafter I’ll probably go with VVD

Need cash to squeeze in those additional city players when city comes back in full force

Treble pool defence is the correct answer 😉

Firmino has scored almost twice as many points away than at home. Averaging around 6 points away and 3 at home. Interesting...

Vardy or Kane for the armband? Harry isn't the same explosive harry of old is he...was a time where he used to bag consecutive hattricks!

Tough call I think. I only have Vardy so I'm going with him, just a bit worried that after two poor results Newcastle will produce a real back-to-basics, hard to beat kind of performance. Southampton are arguably more likely to come out and play, leaving space for Kane. Both on pens, maybe in the end Vardy having had a rest swings it just towards him.

Just cant decide whether to give Grealish one more gw or take him out Traore.

Giving him one more gw means i can save FT and reassess.

I think if you don't need to do it this week, save the FT and reassess. I am making that move today but I currently have 2FT and it's part of a plan to bring TAA back in.

Anyone punting on Firmino? Much easier to accommodate and keep a balanced squad. I thought the article above was pretty poor, not to even consider him

      As per ^^^^

I’d wake up in a cold sweat if I somehow found him in my team - and that’s coming from someone considering treble pool defence!

How a forward can notch 10 blanks in 12 starts is beyond me.... let alone one who costs almost 9.5.... let alone one who gets those starts in the Liverpool attack

Step away from the transfer button 🙂
