We take our regular look at the chip usage and player selections of the top 10,000 Fantasy Premier League managers.

This is our first article in the series since the deadline for using the first Wildcard passed.

Remarkably, almost one in ten of the top 10,000 FPL bosses (at the point of the Gameweek 21 deadline) didn’t use the first of their two permitted Wildcards.

World number four Michael Somers is among that number.

It’d be interesting to know why so many didn’t deploy it. Lack of a need to because of a hugely successful first half of the season? Or blissful ignorance of the rules?

Given some of the stats we have seen already on the make-up of the top 10k managers in 2019/20, it may be more the latter.

Since the deadline for Gameweek 20 passed, 2.34% have used their second Wildcard.

Around one in five have already deployed their Bench Boost this season and there is a similar usage of the Triple Captain chip, too.

Approximately one in six of the top 10k have used their Free Hit over the last five months or so.

Discounting the first Wildcard, 61.7% of the top 10,000 managers have yet to use any of their chips.

Around 15% have used at least two of their chips, however.

Approximately 50 of the top 10,000 managers have already maxed out their allocation, including the second Wildcard.

For those who have used their second Wildcard, there are some familiar names in the ‘template’ squad.

Kevin De Bruyne (£10.6m) is the most-owned player in these Wildcard sides, sitting in 93.16% of the teams in question.

Jamie Vardy (£10.1m), Sadio Mane (£12.3m), Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.5m) and John Lundstram (£5.1m) were also widely selected.

There was a lack of consensus between the posts, however: two of the three least-owned players in the template squad below are goalkeepers.

There are four differences from the Wildcard ‘template’ to the most-owned squad in the top 10k overall.

Raul Jimenez (£7.5m), Anthony Martial (£7.9m), Adama Traore (£5.6m) and Mathew Ryan (£4.8m) are the differentials of sort in the above graphic, while Nick Pope (£4.7m), Dele Alli (£8.8m), James Maddison (£7.7m) and Marcus Rashford (£9.1m) are the alternatives below.

Just over half of the top 10k captained the sidelined Vardy in Gameweek 21, although there would have been some Mane or Mohamed Salah (£12.3m) vice-captainers amongst that select group who emerged with a 16 or 20-point haul.

Looking in greater detail at the main candidates for the armband in the top 10k below, Salah was the only one who hit a double-digit haul.

As for how the top 10k are set up for Double Gameweek 24, the ownerships for a selection of the various Liverpool double-up and triple-up combinations are currently as follows:

CombinationOwnership
Salah + Mane5.82%
Salah + Alexander-Arnold13.3%
Salah + Robertson1.71%
Mane + Alexander-Arnold 58.75%
Mane + Robertson 9.54%
Salah + Mane + Alexander-Arnold3.9%
Salah + Mane + Robertson 0.19%
Salah + Robertson + Alexander-Arnold 0.89%
Mane + Robertson + Alexander-Arnold 4.86%

The Mane and Alexander-Arnold combination is by some distance the most popular double-up, while relatively few FPL managers in the top 10k have already lumped on three Liverpool assets (there are other combinations beyond the above, of course).

We’ll surely see those figures rise considerably ahead of Gameweek 24, however.

Mendy to Sidibe (or Holgate), Martial to Maddison (after Man U vs Nor).
Consider double Brighton defence (Dunk or Webster) now, or after week 25, double Sheff Utd defence
Give yourself the flexibility of 532 or 442 - I consider Greenwood as bench fodder
rest is very good - Salah & Mane will be set & forget until they're confirmed league winners, then they be rested for FA Cup & Champions League games.

I could do alli and rash > salah and 7.2 FWD (ings/dcl) but it might be a bit early to make the triple LIV move.

One thing about Norwich is they have stuck to their guns. Still trying to play the same style of football as they played in the Championship. That is admirable, because if they stick with it, then it will be part of the 'DNA' of their club and they could become good in 3 or 4 years time.

Question is whether the owners will hold their nerve and stick with it even after they get relegated and have some rocky times. They have stepped up in class by coming into the PL and they are going to have to treat it as a learning experience. But you don't improve by beating weak opponents who you are already better than.

Don't think philosophy is why they'll go down (if they do) mainly the 9-10 players injured at the same time that did them in

As far as I've seen Norwich fans are fully in support of the Farke/Webber model, I don't think any manager has ever been cut 5 points adrift at the bottom of the league and been under so little pressure. Rather than calling for his head most fans fear the likelihood is Farke could get frustrated by the lack of financial support and be lured by a bigger club. Norwich gave Alex Neil a season after relegation and only sacked him when promotion was off the table, Farke probably has more credit in the bank than Neil given the style of play and youngsters he's brought through so they'll give him time in the Championship.

The fans accept that Norwich are on a different financial playing field to every other team in the Premier League as they are a self sustaining club and not backed by a wealthy owner who can afford to lose millions. Norwich spent £1m in the summer while Villa spent £120m and both could be relegated come the end of the season, so who would be in the best financial position particularly given how Villa had to sell the stadium to the owner to avoid breaking FFP rules last season. Norwich have wasted PL money on players in the past (Steven Naismith) so have learnt from that and will use it more wisely this time, there's talk of increasing the stadium capacity which they sell out every week whatever league or league position they're in and if they have plenty in the bank they can ensure they get top dollar for the likes of Aarons or Buendia if they have to sell.

        Nailed it.
Nice to see a club being so well run, with the supporters also pulling in the same directions.

Sadly, I don’t see them staying up.

Who to replace Pope with? His next four are che, LEI, mun, ARS.

    - Fabianski (4.9m) has that DGW but fixtures aren't great even in the DGW
    - Schmichael top scorer but is he worth 5.4m? He's hardly running away at the top..
    - Ryan (4.8m) decent fixtures but is that worth the move from the slightly cheaper Pope?
    - Ramsdale (4.7m) cheap and great fixture but that Bouremouth form is BAD?
    - Allison (6.0m) pricey but possibly fixture proof? but is that a waste of a LIV place in the squad?

Please share your thoughts on all the contenders 🙂

I went foster. Watford are an unknown beast now and worth a punt in a position that lends itself to punt.

Not Ramsdale, Bournemouth have forgotten how to defend.
Not Allison, waste of a Liverpool spot.
      Kasper isn’t worth the money.

Ryan or Fabianski for me, expect them to score pretty similarly overly the next few weeks.

For Alli, I prefer Martial for the short term and Maddison for the long term.

For Pope, I would consider Ryan, Pickford (could be a nice differential), or Guaita.

You have a bit of a benching headache, Abraham to DCL and Rico/Kelly to Robertson if funds allow? Triple pool for DGW.
      Alternatively, Alli to Salah

        This.
I’d look to reshuffle your front 8 so you have a perma-bench player like greenwood or dendoncker, and upgrade Alli to Salah

I am sure that people are in the same boat but chips probably looking like

    TC dgw24
FH some sort of reduced game week
WC near the big dgws and then BB around it?

    1. Depends how bad the big blank week is. If it isn't too bad, could be better off using the FH and BB in the bigger DGWs

Ok thanks. That’s what I did last year, soon be a bit clearer I’d imagine

        1. Yeah - usually after the next round of the FA Cup and 5th round draw we'll get a pretty good idea. Last year it was sure pretty early that Liverpool were playing in the big blank week, so it was fairly easy to plan for the blank week whilst saving FH chip.

I saw that Crellin guy say WC would be 36, and BB 37 this season, would be most popular.

    Hendo
    TAA Perreira Lund
    Alli KDB Mane Martial
    Vardy Ings Maupay
    (Martin, Cantwell, Rico, Aurier)

    A) Save
    B) Maupay to Delu
    C) Maupay, Alli to Sarr, Jimenez

Will look at bringing in Robo or Salah for 24. Probably Robo

Will get salah in gw24, downgrade aurier to 4.3 def. Making salah exactly on 0.0 or get a cheaper def. And leave some value itb incase of any price change for salah before gw24?

Cathcart at 4.3 and probably Reid at 3.9 as perm 3rd on bench or take punt on Williams at 4 m who looked one of United’s best players today

Whats everyones plans to squeeze Salah, Mane and TAA in for the DGW?
Im finding it hard to find the best way with my team.

Traore and Abraham will definitely going before GW24 but that doesn’t free up enough funds.

So one of Rashford, Maddison or De Bruyne also has to go. Thoughts please?

    1FT and 1.6 ITB

    Gazzaniga
    Lund TAA Chilwell

Thinking about Gazza + Rico -> Mccarthy + Dunk
Need to do ASAP or I won't be able to afford it bc of Dunk rise.

Lots of other potential transfers though (Alli, Martial, Tammy)
