With the start of a new Premier League season moving ever closer, we switch our focus to Sky Sports Fantasy Football.

£50,000 is on offer to the game’s winner in 2021/22, with cash prizes of £5,000 and £1,000 dished out to those managers finishing in the other two podium places.

The fourth and fifth-placed managers are awarded games consoles, as are the highest-scoring Fantasy bosses of the month.

If you’re new to the Sky game or merely in need of a refresher of the rules and scoring system, we will go over the basics of the game in the article below.

FPL price reveal and launch reaction from three-time top 200 finisher Lateriser

HOW DO I PLAY?

TEAM SELECTION

Just like in Fantasy Premier League, managers select a team of players that will either earn attacking, defensive or bonus points in an attempt to score more than friends, colleagues and/or the rest of the world. However, this is not a squad-based game: you choose simply a starting XI and do not have a bench.

The budget, like in FPL, is £100m. There is no quota for players from the same club, however.

TRANSFERS

Game Weeks run from Friday to Thursday with managers allowed transfers in between Match Days, allowing the maximisation of potential points by bringing in an asset yet to play for one who has already been involved that week.

Instead of one free switch per Game Week as per FPL, the Sky Sports game allocates 40 transfers that can be used at any time during the season – with a limit of five in one Game Week – creating the need for a more long-term strategy.

CHIPS

‘Overhauls’ (the equivalent of Wildcards) are also available in Sky Sports, with two being allocated every season in specific periods.

CAPTAINCY

In the Sky Sports game, you can name more than one captain in a Game Week so long as the players in question are in action on different days. For example, if there were fixtures on Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday in any given Game Week, a Sky Sports Fantasy manager could name a different skipper on each of those Match Days, providing they did so before that day’s deadline. Managers can also schedule their captains ahead of a Game Week, too.

HOW DO YOU SCORE POINTS?

The points structure is largely similar to FPL in Sky Sports Fantasy but tends to award more points for the actions mentioned below.

ActionPoints scored
Starting XI2
Substitution appearance1
Goal scored by a goalkeeper/defender7
Goal scored by a midfielder6
Goal scored by a striker5
Goal assist3
Clean sheet by a goalkeeper (must play 60+ mins)7
Clean sheet by a defender (must play 60+ mins)5
A penalty save by a goalkeeper5
Man of the Match3

CAN MY TEAM LOSE POINTS?

Unfortunately, just like in FPL there are a few ways to lose points too.

ActionPoints scored
Missing a penalty-3
Every goal conceded from the second goal onwards-1
Each yellow card-1
Each red card-3
Each own goal-2

HOW DO BONUS POINTS WORK?

Just like in FPL, there are additional points on offer for other events in matches – although the structure is slightly different, as you will see below:

Tier 1 ActionPoints scored
3 saves made (GK only)2
4 tackles won2
60 completed passes2
2 shots on target2
Tier 2 ActionPoints scored
5+ saves made (GK only)3
5+ tackles won3
70+ completed passes3
3+ shots on target3

head over to our Premium Members Area to see which players will potentially benefit from the Sky Sports bonus on offer for saves, tackles, passes and shots on target.

HOW DO I PLAY AGAINST MY FRIENDS?

There are a number of different ways to compete against others in the Sky Sports game. You can create or join a Free League with your friends and colleagues but there are ways to win money too.

Sky Sports can actually administer your money league for you to avoid any awkwardness post-season. You can choose the entry fee (either £2, £5, £10 or £20 per person) and the prize structure beforehand and Sky Sports will take care of the rest.

We have already set up our annual, free-to-enter Fantasy Football Scout mini-league, which you can enter by heading to the ‘Leagues’ tab and clicking ‘Join+’.

With the podcasts, Patreons, team reveals, Crellin’s crayons, Twitter pages and FF websites, along with the official site spoon feeding the masses, is there any room left for original thinking in FPL?

Ultimately, anyone who takes the game seriously will pick a reasonable side for the opening few weeks and luck will determine who settles in what rank before the first break.

It’s a game but it’s also now an industry as in FFS’ tag line “industry leading...”

Fantasy football’s been solved to a large extent, that’s what I am getting at.

Yeah even people who spend little time with teams now can set up teams after a few clicks on sites like you tube and end up with a decent team. Personally I think paying for stats like this site and fantasy football hub is more of distraction than a help. Plus takes the fun out of it, feels like maths class xG's!
Never had that guff when I played fantasy football using a touch tone phone in the 90's from newspaper listed fantasy games! Was much more fun less noise

All those stats and heat maps can be go for free elsewhere anyway. Plus you can create your own excel sheet for fixtures no need for a ticker. Plus it is easier!

Not that I am not going to waste the next three weeks doing “research” though =)

        🙂
Again, if it makes you feel invested and happy !
Actually with a whole new lot of people coming towards FPL, many organisations finding it as an opportunity to train them (feed them as you say)

I can only see this growing in future. FPL can become a global game if they keep advertising via teams social media like they did with price reveals

      Crellin’s crayons 😀
I agree most all end up thinking the same all watching each other and praising each other. Personally I think it is a good thing. You end up knowing what thegeneral picks will be. Then it is up to each individual fpl game player (we are not really managers) to say what are they missing? Is there a slightly better strategy (without being outlandish)

Most will all end up with similar scores on here gw 1 because people will be talked into/afraid of veering from the common teams.

My team for instance straight away people said no TAA! But yet I have Mane and Salah! I don't say no Mane to the rest of the common RMT's!

I was watching elite fpl really funny lads (reminded me of the original FFS back in the day - two mates having fun), They had a discord where randomers talk about thier drafts after about five most were the same!

I played the telegraph fantasy game few years fairly simplistic fantasy football game. Limited transfers was easy to play because could make transfers after team lists out. Was championship version as well as PL.
Play SKY as well but normally lose interest in it or forget to make captain list changes. But some people seem to enjoy it more than fpl. Lot of differences.

Non prime Messi last year had 25 goals and 21 assists.

          That's easily 300+

I'd pay 14 for him in a heartbeat. Permanent captain obviously!

        Prime Messi had 115 goal involvements in 69 games (91 G’s, 24A’s) in 2012, 14m would be a bargain!

Is there really a need for a scramble for United players against Palace?

Palace were only a joke defensively post-lockdown because they were on the beach. I expect them to be a bit more sound at the back.

Only Bruno is in my plans, other can wait till GW8 or so.

Have you seen the state Palace's defence looks? If Man U were playing them GW1 everyone would be tripling up, but as they blank I think people are looking for things that aren't there to persuade themselves they aren't going to get burnt.

Lots of United fans here who have hopes that United will score 3+ goals every match.

They couldn't break down FC kobenhavn in 120 mins bar a penalty

It depends on whether you rate them as FPL assets or not

If you rate them - then yes there is a need for a scramble (Not necessarily just for Palace either, but also for the long haul) as there’s nothing worse than not backing your own opinion then seeing that it would have been a success

If you don’t rate them - there’s absolutely no need for a scramble - you never would have gotten them in the first place so in the event that they did haul, you wouldn’t really have deserved their points anyways, it would just have been someone else’s opinion over your own

If you get comfortable backing your own opinion the game becomes a lot less painful

*(Still not painLESS obviously, but a lot less painful)

Jan is gone, yes. TBD If yesterday was preview or just a little test. Sess didn't make the bench on many occasions during the run-in, so I am skeptical Jose will trust him. Think ultimately we run four at the back, but I'm keyboard warrior.

Vertonghen is at Benfica. Our CBs will be Dier and one of Alderweireld / Sanchez. Davies pretty nailed at LB, regardless of Sessegnon or Rose (who's back from loan). Possibly new RB coming with Aurier linked with AC Milan. We also have Tanganga and Foyth but not sure on minutes, esp for the latter.

    Toying with

    A) Werner and Adams
    B) Zyech and Ings

Can see both being quite pivotal to Chelsea's attacking set up, especially if Havertz doesn't join.

Assuming it will be occasional double up, I don't think their is any problem. Avoid tough games and attack easy ones...

Not really, if you think McCarthy is a good option with ok fixtures why KWP isn't?

Why do you think KWP will be one of best 4.5 defs in the game?

He's in my team btw but curious to know your confidence

Struggling to see any nailed 4.5m defenders worthy of inclusion.

Kwp seems to be one. Just think he has capacity to do well in fpl terms. I'd expect saints to be around top half of table. Just a hunch
