Pro Pundits - Tom

Why researching the newly promoted clubs can give FPL managers an early edge

One of the world’s best FPL managers, Tom Freeman (aka avfc82), is back with his first column of 2020/21. Tom looks at lessons learned from last season, Chelsea’s exciting options and the newly promoted clubs.

With the Premier League full fixture schedule set to be released no later than Friday, it’s time to get those notepads out and start planning.

I’ve got to admit, I’m looking forward to getting back into a more familiar routine in terms of Gameweek deadlines. The relentless nature of Project Restart meant it was hard to keep pace and it’s fair to say that it didn’t suit my playing style at all. There was no time to think, and for those of you who have watched my ‘Meet the Manager’ video, you’ll know how much I value time.

So, how did the 2019/20 season end?

Well, it wasn’t a bad campaign at all, but was somewhat short of where I want to be, finishing with an overall rank of 16,668 – 17 points off my top 10k target.

Why did I fail? Having run a bit of analysis over the last week, I keep coming back to one thing. No, it wasn’t owning Theo Walcott (£6.0m) for three Gameweeks back in November (!), it was chip strategy following the restart, which went like this:

Gameweek 30+ – Free Hit
Gameweek 33+ – Wildcard
Gameweek 34+ – Bench Boost

Had I gone down the Gameweek 30+ Bench Boost route like many did, I’m pretty sure I’d be sat here with a ninth top 10k finish in the bag, but hey, that’s the way it goes sometimes.

I now sit 15th in the Career Hall of Fame, with my updated season history as follows:

Looking ahead to the new season, how good is it to see Mark Sutherns, a true legend of the game, back? With Lateriser and Zophar also offering insight on here, quite a team of contributors is being assembled. I’ll be back too, writing regular columns, plus Spot the Differential, with hopefully a few video appearances thrown in along the way.

As is usually the case during the off-season, Fantasy managers have a lot of time on their hands, and I’ve already seen quite a few strategy guides and threads popping up on social media; the kind of dos and don’ts of FPL. There is nothing wrong with it but to consistently achieve high ranks year in, year out, my advice would be don’t be too rigid and set in your ways – there is no rulebook. Be adaptable, be flexible and don’t be afraid to rip up plans at the last minute.

For sure, there are a few tried and trusted methods I try to stick to, like saving a free transfer whenever possible or holding onto my first Wildcard for as long as I can (early ones rarely work for me), but with one or two clubs possibly being given extra time off by the Premier League having reached the latter stages of European competition, these ideas may be completely redundant in a few weeks’ time – who knows what the new season will throw at us?

Another thing I touched upon in my ‘Meet the Manager’ video, was that it’s worth spending a bit of time now researching the newly promoted sides. Why? Well, you’ll find some solid, cheap picks, and possibly one or two misclassifications, like John Lundstram (£5.5m) and Keinan Davis (£4.5m) last season. Even if you don’t plan on starting with anyone from Leeds United, West Bromwich Albion or Fulham, get that knowledge in place now, so you’re ready to move quickly once the season kicks off.

I’ve also seen a couple of threads suggesting all of the above sides will be slow starters. It doesn’t matter – they can still deliver points, especially offensive players.

Aston Villa and Norwich City lost in Gameweek 1 last season, yet Teemu Pukki and John McGinn (£5.5m) still found the back of the net against Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur respectively. Then, in Gameweek 2, there was Lundstram and Pukki’s double-digit hauls, while Todd Cantwell and Jack Grealish (£7.0m) were also amongst the assists.

David and Neale’s recent articles are a good starting point, while Statsbomb, Stats Perform and All Stats Aren’t We have all written some really good stuff on Leeds.

It’s also worth listening to those in the community who watch their team’s week in, week out. There are plenty of good posters on the forum and on Twitter, so keep an eye on what they’re saying. I’m not saying blindly follow them (sometimes they get it wrong), but what you will get is a fan’s perspective on what is happening at a club, which can be useful.

In terms of transfers, it’s understandably been a bit of a slow window so far, but Chelsea’s new signings are firmly on my radar. Hakim Ziyech (£8.0m) is at a peak age to excel, while Timo Werner (£9.5m) could be a steal and should settle quickly, as most Bundesliga imports do. Add in Christian Pulisic (£8.5m), and this team is going to be a lot of fun next season. If they can resolve their issues at the back, I think they could turn out to be the best of the rest behind Manchester City and Liverpool.

Talking of City, Ferran Torres (£7.0m) probably isn’t going to be an option from the off but looks like a decent dribbler with plenty of potential. He’s been playing as a right midfielder in a 4-4-2 at Valencia, so it’ll be interesting to see how Pep Guardiola uses him, and how he adapts to a more possession-based system.

Tomas Soucek (£5.0m) and Nathan Ferguson (£4.0m) could be solid enablers too, but as is the case with everyone, fixtures will dictate whether or not they are genuine options.

Regarding motivation for the new season, I’ll leave this quote from ESPN reporter David Aldridge, which is taken from the superb Netflix documentary ‘The Last Dance’, and talks about ‘The Separator’ and Michael Jordan’s quest for three Championships in a row:

A lot of the people in that era, that you would consider Michael’s peers had won two in a row. Isiah had won two straight, Magic had won two straight… but, none of them had won three in a row. The third championship was the Separator. You win three and you’re on Mount Rushmore. So, for that team it was all about winning a third straight.

You can think of a sixth top 1k finish as my ‘Separator’ – let’s see if I can nail it.

Finally, there will be a lot of ‘noise’ out there over the next few weeks. All I’d say is don’t get too influenced by others, play your own game and most importantly, have some fun!

Thanks for reading…

That's pretty strong. I like the balance and picks. Although I think Tierney is a bit pricy at 5.5m. Would rather get AWB at that price or even better - downgrade to Saliba or Mari.

The point is he is so expensive....Tierney looks like a major threat when healthy and I think AWB will be a force = TAA+ 4.5 starter imo.

Don't post it here. So much groupthink here and all you'll get is people calling you crazy for going without TAA when there's many ways to play this game.

Both high upside players for cheap. But I theoretically have a stronger bench than I did with my TAA team by adding a starting FWD

        1. Greek Freak
          • 8 Years
          3 years, 8 months ago

The thing is, I've tried making no-TAA teams too, thinking that I'd get more balanced by spreading the funds. But I still end up with one or two players in the 6-7m range who would get nowhere near the amount of points TAA will. Foden is one such player in your team for instance - do you expect him to match TAA in points?

          1. Greek Freak
            • 8 Years
            3 years, 8 months ago

Because if the answer is 'no', he can easily turn into TAA with a formation switch and less money on your bench.

          2. Cok3y5murf
            • 7 Years
            3 years, 8 months ago

If you mean in season totals, it's not the right way to look at it because no one intends on keeping Foden all season like TAA.

            1. Greek Freak
              • 8 Years
              3 years, 8 months ago

I think you'd need to have extreme luck on your side if you plan to outscore TAA by rotating Foden-priced mids around. It's doable for sure, but in most cases it'll fail.

              1. Cok3y5murf
                • 7 Years
                3 years, 8 months ago

Part of TAA's points can be covered by VVD, Gomez, or Alisson (CS points). Comes down to how well you spend the saving. You're comparing TAA against Foden, but it's actually TAA + a cheap mid vs Foden + a cheap defender + 1m. A cheap defender is usually better value than a cheap mid.

                1. Greek Freak
                  • 8 Years
                  3 years, 8 months ago

In the instance of his team, it is TAA vs. Foden, since the 352 would become a 442 if TAA comes in for Foden.

Overall, yes - but again, you may be overestimating how good people are at spending an extra 1m. It's an interesting issue.

Tarkowski sticks out. Why pay 5.5m for him? AWB, Tierney, Gomez all look much better at that price point.

Traore as well not the best. He doesn't look nailed on. Would use the Tarkowski savings and get Greenwood. You need some Man Utd. Their assets are some of the best value in the game.

    Mini-leagues update!

With the new T&Cs regarding cash mini-leagues in FPL, we will be adjusting the requirements for our FFS leagues.

The Fantasy Football Scout mini-league will still be available to all: League Code is 5u05vz

However the mini-league that is currently the Members League, behind the paywall, has to be changed. It will become the Community Members League. The code to this league will be available to everyone who has an FFS login, whether they pay for the Members Area or not.

    So we will have:
    1. Fantasy Football Scout League: 5u05vz
    2. Fantasy Football Scout Community Members League: league code will be available from next week, for anyone with an FFS login.

Along with this change, we will be slightly adjusting the names of the FFS tiers. Users who have an FFS login will be called Community Members, and users who pay for access to the Members Area will be called Premium Members. That name change will be rolled out slowly.

Additionally, if anyone has questions about how cash leagues work now feel free to email me: geoff@fantasyfootballscout.co.uk.

Trying to decide between 2 team atm:

    A)
    McCarthy Nyland
    Williams Saiss lamptey ayling Bernardo
De bruyne salah aubameyang greenwood jones
    Ings Antonio wood

    B)
    McCarthy Nyland
    Williams TAA lamptey ayling Bernardo
De bruyne Foden aubameyang greenwood jones
    Ings Antonio Werner

Basically a shootout between saiss salah and wood against TAA Foden and Werner. I think B sounds stronger on paper but a lot will likely depend on fixtures

I like it. Maybe my favorite big-at-the-back draft. Lots of value in Foden and Greenwood. I think KdB will be in my team no matter what though and in the end, I prefer having rotating 4.5ms with another big hitter than a huge defense.

    Lads, two things:
    1) Is Wood worth the .5 over Mitrovic? I think he's more reliable, but would love to hear your thoughts
    2) Is Foden worth the Pep-factor if we have a playing option on the bench, or just too risky?

Don't forget that McNeil might be off to that great team in the Midlands, so his supply might be attenuated.

Does seem like a weird decision to keep the 2nd league.

Everyone who enters the normal FFS league has a free membership anyway, surely? So the members league isn't any different to the normal one now... any point keeping it?

      Very strongly considering him tbh

The little rascal owes me big time after blowing DGW30's last minute captaincy switch from KDB too - need some payback

10.5 is too cheap for Kun if he's fit

If Jesus ever got injured, Aguero would be straight in my team.

But I'm not keen otherwise. He averaged around 60 minutes a game, last season, and it's bound to get worse. Not ideal...

Temptingly priced for sure, 1m cheaper than Sterling, but won’t play nearly as many minutes imo.

On the one hand, I don't wanna bother you with another RMT. On the other, this is a fantasy football forum, and we're here to discuss. Just ignore it if I'm a nuisance.

    Here it goes:
    McCarthy
TAA, Gomez, Doherty / Ayland, Saliba
Salah, KDB, Bruno, Soucek / Ritchie
    Jiménez, Wood

    Seems good?

If my maths are right (and they have been wrong before)

    - TAA only failed to deliver a return (i.e. Goal, Assist or Cleansheet) in 14 games last season
    - But 7 of those 14 came while Allison was out injured
    - And another 5 of the 14 were Liverpool had won the league
    - i.e. 12 of those 14 blanks were relatively "predictable" in terms of being able to swerve him for captaincy those weeks

Assuming Allison is fit (and Liverpool aren't drunk from celebrating a league win) he's actually an honest to God captaincy shout most weeks, isn't he?

    1. Zimo
      • 5 Years
      3 years, 8 months ago

I suppose so but I'll probably stick with Bruno and KDB

      1. Nanoelektronicar
        • 9 Years
        3 years, 8 months ago

But having the TAA as Liverpool captancy option just complements those two, rather than going aginst them.

    2. Piggs Boson
      • 12 Years
      3 years, 8 months ago

I'd still rather captain Salah over Trent.

Love Trent, phenomenal player, can't believe he's only 21, but he still has no where the attacking threat of Salah, and in a 5-0 drumming, it's the attacking points that bring the super hauls, not a fixed 4pt CS return.

      1. Piggs Boson
        • 12 Years
        3 years, 8 months ago

6 commas in one sentence might be a new record.

      2. Nanoelektronicar
        • 9 Years
        3 years, 8 months ago

In a 5-0 drumming very likely that Trent had an assist or even two.

        1. Piggs Boson
          • 12 Years
          3 years, 8 months ago

          Yes, but it's relative.

Trent has amazing attacking potential, but it's still no where near the attacking threat of Salah. So whilst Trent would haul, I still think it's more likely Salah would beat him on points.

    3. Goonsquad245
      • 8 Years
      3 years, 8 months ago

Depends if you have Salah or not. If not, then absolutely. Can’t think of a realistic scenario where I’d captain him over Salah though.

      1. pingissimus
        • 5 Years
        3 years, 8 months ago

You may not go for it. But here's a possible

Negative team unlikely to score and with record of sitting back and also toothless in attack: Palace Burnley SU and maybe an improved Villa

        1. Goonsquad245
          • 8 Years
          3 years, 8 months ago

It’s a lot closer in that scenario agreed, but Liverpool can give any of those sides a hiding.

Perhaps it’s just my limited thinking, but I just can’t get my head round a situation where TAA’s points expectation is greater than Salah’s.

I’m taking nothing away from TAA here by the way. He’s a fantastic captain option in his own right, he just has who I believe to be one of the greatest FPL options of all time in the same team as him.

    4. @persecuted_by_mods
        3 years, 8 months ago

Yes but losing a clean sheet blank always feel worse than a attacker was close but didn't return

Think it was Giggs who pointed out optimum situation: game against negative team with solid defence

Pulled it off against Palace last time and would happily do the same if it was Burnley or SU say.

Good work. Trent is a steal, so is Robbo. These guys have less to do than Mo for points in the range of 6-15. It's easier to find a premium mid to replace Mo than defenders to replace these 2.

        1. Goonsquad245
          • 8 Years
          3 years, 8 months ago

That’s only relevant if you’re going treble defence though. You can have 2x defenders and Mo pretty easily
