The first episode of the relaunched FPL BlackBox podcast was beamed live on YouTube last night, with our very own Az and Mark diving straight into the self-reflection.

The pair pull no punches as they discuss their mistakes from 2019/20, be it transfer strategies that failed to pay off or early-season gambles that were – in hindsight – always doomed to flop.

The thorny issue of team value gets a mention as debate rages over whether early transfers are a good thing, especially with the potential threat of COVID-related postponements disrupting short-term plans.

Taking a longer view, Az and Mark also consider what’s been holding them back in the last few seasons and how they can improve going forward.

There’s a first look at the duo’s Fantasy Premier League drafts for the new season, with the curveball picks of Matheus Pereira (£6.0m) and Eddie Nketiah (£6.0m) raising an eyebrow.

The YouTube and podcast links are below.

About the Podcast

The FPL BlackBox podcast is part of our Scout Network.

Each week, Az and Mark will look back on their decisions to reflect on what’s going right – and what’s going wrong.

The co-hosts will be analysing the mistakes they have made throughout the season, with the hope of learning from their errors to become better Fantasy Premier League managers.

There will also be assessments of other elite managers’ performances along the way, along with the usual chat on transfers and captains.

Head over to the FPL BlackBox YouTube page to subscribe now and, while you’re at it, why not do the same with the Fantasy Football Scout channel.

    Ramsdale (Steer)
    Trent Doherty Tierney Vinagre (Mitchell)
    Salah Ward-Prowse Aubameyang (Bissouma Lemina)
    Antonio Werner Ings

    Just did Mitrovic/Soucek to Antonio/Lemina

0.5 itb.. Not overly sold on Mitrovic especially going up vs Arsenal and Tierney, hopefully Antonio can carry on from where left off.

    any thought?

Not for me. Antonio not necessarily fit, Haller seems to be in and around as a starter again (though Antonio is nailed either way) and poor fixtures plus Soucek is playable. If you don't need him to play in your first XI then maybe.

Antonio might go back to midfielder if he starts as I expect haller to be first choice forward now.

Ings to Adams allows you to transfer in Martial for Antonio the second week.

This blackbox thing works very well both opinionated and not afraid to give thier point of view. And they are well able to argue them clearly. I always feel that most of the others on the Scoutcast can leave Az unchallenged as they are quiet personalities. Mark is a good counter point. Whose ever idea it was to throw these two together - well done.

What I mean is a lot of dubious statements on the scoutcasts are left unchallenged and they just end up copying each other/agreeing. Nothing to do with entertainment more to with discussion of options alternatives and opinions.

After much tinkering, this is what I’ve come to. Thoughts?

    Ryan Button
    TAA KWP Taylor Vinagre Mitchell
    Salah KDB Son Saka Soucek
    Werner Rich Mitro

I think Rich could be a great differential with Everton’s midfield additions. Plus he’s more nailed than DCL who could rotate with Kean.

Of course, and they already spread out the articles and split them up with non-gambling ones on the home page.

But the issue is - they obviously know what they’ve done is not popular, but rather than someone come out and say, ‘yeah we’ve screwed that up’, they’re sweeping it under the rug and then censoring posts that highlight it......this reply will self destruct in 3...2....

I have a similar team and leaving 1m ITB as well.

Assuming you plan to 'downgrade' one of Salah or Auba to Bruno, you can upgrade Son to KDB or Sterling without having to sell both.(Price rises not withstanding).

Plan was to downgrade Salah to Bruno GW2 then move back to Salah from Auba GW3. Options to move Son to Rashford or Werner to Martial for a double up. Not convinced on City’s openers but if I had to there are options to free up cash for Salah + KDB + Rashford or Martial (or both)

I don’t see how Doherty leaves Wolves for Spurs if he’s not going to start. I‘m assuming Aurier will be on his way out before the window ends. Have played around downgrading him to someone like James or Dier and using the extra to upgrade Brewster. Hoping for a loan deal on him though

Che arrive last season and had difficulties to adapt at the beginning that's the only reason Long was nailed. Now Che is fully adapt and involve in Southampton system and is for me a best to pair with Ings.

best 5m defender to play in this back line?

    Meslier
    TAA Vinagre Doherty Mitchell

Or go Ramsdale in goal and put KWP in def. Or is Lindelof/Shaw and benching GW1 an option given their decent run as playing 3 at the back

You can go Shaw, he s a nice option at 5.0. If he stay fit, he could be a very nice differential this season.

Ramsdale and KWP......by having KWP you protect yourself from all those McArthur picks and Ramsdale gives you low cost into last season 5th best defence

Depends of what I see from werner in GW1:

A He plays well and good connect his partner, I do Alli to Greenwood
B Chelsea with all that new player don't play well for the moment and need more time, I do Werner to Martial

Son is enough cover for Spurs, no need for Alli

Thought I'd try to collect some thoughts here, instead of replying in threads too much.

First, I very much appreciate the feedback through the day and hear the concerns about betting and promotional content. I also appreciate the concern in comments about mental health and addiction issues. Certainly we've tried to put in appropriate warnings and statements on any piece related to gambling, but I acknowledge we can step that up and we will.

I strongly don't want us to be encouraging unhealthy behaviour and we'll continue marking gambling content with disclaimers for age, and gambling aware notifications - as I said above we'll discuss further measures.

I also hear the concern about filtering out specific types of articles, and I'll make sure to look seriously at filtering options going forward. That will be a nice feature for the site generally, though to do that we'll probably need a reworking of how the comments section works. That, to be honest, needs doing anyway.

I totally agree with the point about too many sponsored partnership posts lately - this was brought up this morning and is being addressed. This was really just missed, and the balance wasn't right at all the last few days. Content is always more important than anything else and we need to show that better. I'll try to change the way articles display to help fix this, but a better content plan is definitely needed.

So again, I hear the concerns! I'm going to give some thought to ways to improve how promotions are shown and talk with the team about our options going forward. The editorial team is currently talking about better ways to plan content, so there's a better balance.

As always, feel free to email me with direct concerns if you'd like: geoff@fantasyfootballscout.co.uk.

Davies had been very good yesterday playing for Walles, Captain for the second half.

A lot of hopes with him this season

Not much in it between Alli and son ppg last year: Alli 5.7, Son 6.15

Alli looks like he may have finally recovered from his injuries too or am I trying to convince myself in order to save 1mil?

think I'm starting with both GW1-3, either of them could be pretty good and possibly both - think I prefer Son right now, but that could change of course, Alli's position does look good
