West Ham 1-3 Man United

  • Goals: Tomas Souček (£4.9m) | Paul Pogba (£7.7m), Mason Greenwood (£7.1m), Marcus Rashford (£9.5m)
  • Assists: Declan Rice (£4.8m) | Bruno Fernandes (£10.9m), Alex Telles (£5.5m), Juan Mata (£5.9m)
  • Bonus points: Pogba x3, Fernandes x2, Souček x1

SMASH AND GRAB

Bruno Fernandes (£10.9m) left his burgeoning ownership wondering what might have been as he transformed Manchester United in a 3-1 win at West Ham.

In a match which the phrase “game of two halves” was invented for, the Portuguese international was comfortably the man of the match despite only featuring for 45 minutes.

Ole Gunnar Solksjaer rested Fernandes and Marcus Rashford (£9.5m) in Gameweek 11, citing recent bruises and knocks.

“With Marcus Rashford and Bruno Fernandes, they’ve been kicked between here and there lately. Bruno’s foot’s been sore since the Southampton game. Hopefully, I don’t have to use him tonight.” – Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, speaking pre-match

The Manchester United boss was hoping he could get through the London Stadium encounter without drawing on them but his hand was forced when West Ham played his team off the park in the opening period.

“We struggled to keep up with the counter-attack and set plays. We gave the ball away too often.” – Ole Gunnar Solskjaer

Solskjaer introduced Fernandes and Rashford in the place of Donny van Beek (£6.7m) and Edinson Cavani (£8.1m), the two players slotting into their preferred positions of number 10 and left-wing respectively – and they turned Manchester United into a completely different team.

Crucial to that transformation Fernandes playing a whopping eight key passes. That’s right, EIGHT in just 45 minutes – the most of any player in a Premier League game this season and enough to help him also achieve two bonus points.

If those around him had shown better finishing in the second half, or if Solskjaer had started the player, he could have realistically come away from the London Stadium with three or four assists and might have matched Gameweek 11 captaincy rival Kevin De Bruyne (£11.7m).

The surprise benching may have ended Fernandes’ run of four consecutive away-day double-digit hauls but he remains an exceptional asset on the road and is, of course, still yet to blank outside of Old Trafford in 2020/21.

That said, Fantasy managers may want to keep an eye on his fixtures, considering Manchester United are at home in four of the next six. Fernandes may have averaged 11.4 points per away game this season but he has scored just 4.8 points per game at Old Trafford.

STRICKEN DEVILS

It is clear that the demanding schedule is starting to take its toll on Manchester United’s squad before the Christmas rush is even at its height.

We recently highlighted the hectic nature of their December fixtures, this month containing nine matches and no fewer than six two-day turnarounds.

So the fact that Cavani and Anthony Martial (£8.7m) both picked up knocks against West Ham is far from ideal for Solskjaer.

“Edinson had to come off with an injury. Hopefully, it’s not too bad. Anthony had to come off as well.” – Ole Gunnar Solskjaer

“We lost (Anthony) Martial and Edinson (Cavani). Hopefully not too bad, but they couldn’t carry on. It’s going to be a season where we have to do without players. I’m just glad that we’ve got the subs that we have. We’ll do some scans and hopefully, they’ll be available soon.”

Meanwhile, David de Gea (£5.4m) sat this one out as the injury sustained at Southampton in Gameweek 10 continues to plague the goalkeeper.

He was able to face PSG midweek but, Solskjaer was not willing to take any risks, handing a much-anticipated first Premier League start to Dean Henderson (£5.3m), who did an excellent job of keeping Manchester United only 1-0 down in the woeful first half.

“The injury against Southampton is something we don’t want to take a risk with. Obviously, he played against PSG, so hopefully, we can have him ready for Leipzig as well.” – Ole Gunnar Solskjaer

HAMMERS COMING DOWN

West Ham’s defensive credentials continue to fall as they conceded for the fifth time in seven matches.

In many ways, the first half proved to be somewhat misleading concerning their recent problems in defence, the Hammers allowed complete control of the game by Manchester United’s woeful passing and approach play.

However, the game turned on its head once the Red Devils got going and West Ham were second-best from that point.

It continues a downward trend at the back for David Moyes’ men who were certainly fortunate not to concede more often in recent wins over Fulham and Aston Villa.

That was borne out in recent underlying statistics too. For example, they came into Gameweek 11 with a worse score for expected goals conceded (xGC) over the previous four matches than the Cottagers and, accordingly, let in more goals than the Cottagers on Saturday.

Crucially, popular Fantasy asset Patrick Bamford (£6.1m) and his Leeds colleagues face West Ham in Gameweek 12 before Chelsea’s in-form attackers host the Hammers in Gameweek 14.

West Ham United XI (3-4-2-1): Fabianski; Cresswell, Ogbonna, Balbuena; Masuaku, Souček, Rice, Coufal (Johnson 85′); Fornals (Benrahma 75′), Bowen (Lanzini 76′); Haller.

Manchester United XI (4-2-3-1): D Henderson; Telles, Maguire, Lindelöf, Wan-Bissaka; Pogba, McTominay; Martial (Mata 62′), van de Beek (B Fernandes 46′), Greenwood; Cavani (Rashford 46′).

Salah gets the hook, after 1 goal and 1 assist

But non owners will have 60 minutes of hell

Right, you’d think I’d of learnt by now playing for so long, but I don’t seem to move anywhere or make ground and ML rivals just passing me by. All the stuff you’ve heard before, but thought I’d just ask, can anyone offer some stern advice how to claw this season back?

    Safe to say I’m hit crazy, so that needs to stop, but here is my team;

    https://fantasy.premierleague.com/entry/156568/history

Team looks different now, did Mahrez to KDB & Vardy to Bamford.

Just anything concrete you obviously better players can offer me, I seem to of lost sight of........well, playing this game well? Haha.
56 points all out this GW (-8). So much relies on captain choice.

Thank you for any input here fellas, it’s make or break now.

      We all have our style
If your is taking hits then do it.

      No problem at all.

I am a good player but I'll never be an excellent one cause I love hits.

At the same time I love playing the game aggressively and I like it more than being boring.

I deal with the fact that I'll never reach high but that's the way I enjoy the game and in the end its all about enjoyment cause its just a game

Thank you man, absolutely agree, I do love a hit or two and playing aggressively haha. Just gets me down how I have the team.....but I don’t score highly, or at least that’s the way last season and this season is going. My fortune needs to change NOW if I’m to claw back a 100 point gap in my main ML.
Funnily enough, I kept my other team with all my past history going (I know, frowned upon), and it is flying! On for a 90 pointer and I hardly do anything to it!
ML leader does not touch his team at all and scores high every week! Infuriating.
I suppose I just need to calm down hand trust in it, and captain properly, I just always seem to captain the lowest scoring ayer every time!

Haha yeah already done that move to set me up. Captain picks as mentioned have been utterly dreadful. Another ML rival last 4 GW’s has gone Ziyech Bruno Jota Son captain, I tell ya, i can’t catch a break lol

For starters, you need to upgrade that bench, you won't last the Winter with it. I don't know how much money you have left over but I'd suggest Mitchell to Taylor for starters. Although I don't want to lose him, it might be shrewd to swap DCL to Watkins (2 doubles coming up eventually) to free up funds (if you need them for the bench) and give you a mini-differential.

      1. Salah’s Sonnet
        • 14 Years
        5 years, 22 hours ago

Thanks bud, yeah the very reason I chose Bamford (done Vardy > Bamford) was so I could now use the 0.8 left over to upgrade my bench, and Taylor was my thought too! 🙂
Shall defo make a note of the Watkins move for the doubles also.
Just really REALLY need captain picks to be on point now

Happy to help. With captain picks the standard advice seems to be don't gamble, especially in the first half of the season (I've heard a few like Tom Freeman and FPL Salah on the podcasts say this). Towards the end is where you take punts. I've had an mediocre season so far with captain picks and with 15 hits(!) + WC gone (decided on an experimental super-aggressive strategy this season) am chasing big time. But feel I have turned a corner now, I nearly went for (c) Vardy over KDB this week, dodged that bullet and am on 74 with Lamptey to play with squad looking mint. Still plenty of time for you -us- to turn it around!

Thanks again pal, yeah lesson learnt here is to not gamble for a good while now, stick with more reliability on captain choices. Fantastic score this GW. Just something so infuriating being almost bottom of an ML table with all mates putting in way less effort all surpass you.
Got to stay calm, smooth out some captaincies, and realise that there is a hell of a long way to go yet 😉

Honestly, my advice is to look at my team and try and work out exactly what I did. If that sounds arrogant I apologize, but I'm similarly hit happy (I've only taken 1 hit less than you) and I'm ranked just outside the top 1k with 106.7m team value so I'm obviously doing something right. I could explain everything I did to get there but it's better you try and figure it out yourself. If you have any questions I'm happy to answer.

Cheers Harn! Boo doesn’t sound arrogant, just had a look and wow that is phenomenal, in awe really so hats off! At first glance I see what you’ve done, got off to a stormer with bench boost then WC to sort it, and the hits for players have been sound. The FH this GW, again, WOW! Just wow! Obviously some luck there with players like Matip & Zouma but still, huge applauds pal!
Shall have a more in depth look tomorrow for sure!
If you had any advice for me from here on in would it be just to try and mainly get those captain picks correct? And can even a 100 point lead be caught now? 🙁

Thanks for the very kind words. Yes, I have definitely nailed my chips this year and that's certainly helped. Using bench boost GW1 was always the intention as I generally mess up my GW1 team and get off to a bad start. This way I could sort of 'guarantee' a good rank to start out and then by (selectively) jumping on the early bandwaggons and price rises I knew I would have a good chance to maintain it. Most of my transfers from then on were with team value in mind. With captains I just try to play safe as I believe in the 'wisdom of the crowd'. It's all quite basic advice really, but consistently putting it in to practice is what makes the difference, like with lots of things.

Very welcome, and very much deserved, it’s actually a great strategy to begin the season with and something I could strongly consider next season to kind of ‘make it happen’ so to speak to begin with strongly. Same I usually get off to a bad start also.
Wisdom of the crowd indeed, something I’ll stick too now with captains for a while. Got the team I’m happy with now with a strong mid of Son Bruno KDB Bruno & Salah. No reason to not have a good captain each week now, and I may need to just turn the notch down with hits.
I’ve half given up hope, but I know how much two solid gameweeks can turn things around. With games coming fast over Xmas hopefully I can do that sooner rather than later 🙂

Think no news, seen alot of Wilson in posts here though. That seems an undue risk to me

Wilson actually rose tonight, weird logic to buy a player who might have a blank.

Early transfer thoughts, very happy with my team in general- however feel like a need a Spurs player back in, even though the tough fixtures they are playing too good to not have in my team.

Thinking Ziyech + DCL —> Son + Adam’s (-4), Will wait until champions league is played to make them though, another option is to do Ziyech to Jota.
    Thoughts?

    Rest of team:
    Martinez
    Chillwell / KWP / Dias
    Salah / Fernandes / Ziyech / Grealish / KDB
    DCL / Bamford

    Button, Kilman, Michell, Stephen’s.

    Hit taken....Kane/Foden out for Salah/Bamford....
It’s crazy really but the team I want is the team I have....
Kane and Son the big big dangers...

    McCarthy
    Chilwell Cancelo Lamptey
    Salah KDB Bruno Grealish Soucek
    Werner Bamford

    Peacock-Farrell Konsa Taylor Davis

    Early thoughts on this lot?

    Martínez (Forster)
    Chilwell, James, Lamptey (Coufal) (Mitchell)
Grealish, De Bruyne, Fernandes, Son (Burke)
    Calvert-Lewin, Bamford, Vardy

    1 FT, 1.9 in bank

    a) Bruno > Salah and get him back in 13
    b) DCL/Vardy + Son/Grealish > Salah + whatever is left
    c) Vardy + DCL + Burke > Salah + 11.5 or so in forwards and 352
    d) forget Salah

    Cheers in advance.

Can you not afford Vardy + Burke —> Salah + Brewster/Davis? and play a 3-5-2, imo 352 with power midfield is the way to go now

            Burke drop recently hurt.
            Vardy worth 10.2 + 1.9 = 12.1

My team is pretty similar and I'm leaning towards D for this week. I expect Salah to have his minutes managed prior to Spurs, the only problem is how much damage he could do even if he does.

I expect him to play 90 minutes and be heavily involved in most good things Man Utd do. I think City will win but obviously Utd (and Bruno) can still score. Basically I wouldn't captain him or sell him.

Don’t like the idea of selling DCL, Son or Grealish so that rules b) and c) out.

Salah has a massive fan base and will be captained by many, so if he scores a hat trick, you’d be kicking yourself and your rank will decrease significantly. So that rules out D?

      A) is a possibility but there will be some gameweeks where you’d need both. So that’s not a great option either.

Conclusion: I don’t like any of the options. Sorry mate
