Captain Sensible

The captaincy debate for Gameweek 12 of Fantasy Premier League is all about one man: Mohamed Salah (£12.3m).

He may have scored 22nd Champions League goal for Liverpool midweek, making him the club’s all-time leading goalscorer in the competition, but another 90-minute outing has his owners worried about a benching at Fulham.

Nevertheless, he remains the favourite for the Gameweek 12 armband and, as per usual, the Captain Sensible article is here to test the best candidates against recent data.

Even though this could prove one of the most one-sided captaincy decisions in recent FPL history, there is still plenty to sink our teeth into, comparing the underlying numbers of form players against the defensive displays of their upcoming opponents.

As this uses extensive data from the Fantasy Football Scout Premium Members Area, only those with a valid subscription can access it in full.

Captain Poll

Unsurprisingly, the aforementioned Egyptian midfielder has dominated the Gameweek 12 captaincy poll, securing the biggest majority any Fantasy asset has managed on the site so far this season.

Since making a full recovery from coronavirus (COVID-19), Salah has put up 20 FPL points in two matches, seemingly having regained form and confidence much sooner than some may have expected.

However, what is surprising is the lack of similar interest in Sadio Mané (£12.0m), who does not even make the top-five captaincy picks according to our voters.

That’s in spite of the Senegalese international getting (nearly) full rest in the Champions League and, therefore, more likely to start the next two league fixtures than Salah.

The same goes for Diogo Jota (£7.0m), whose Gameweek 11 benching also makes him more likely to feature heavily than Salah, who remains the people’s choice, regardless of his full Champions League appearance on Wednesday.

Outside of Salah, not a single Fantasy asset has been backed by more than 6.5% of voters ahead of Gameweek 12, his majority over second-placed Harry Kane (£10.9m) standing at a whopping 44.6%.

Just 6.3% fancy the Spurs striker more than Salah, despite the fact that he has 11 more points than him this season and Crystal Palace have just one clean sheet in 2020/21.

Son Heung-min (£9.6m) is set to face the Eagles’ brittle defence this weekend too, and even the fact that he is the current leading points-scorer (100), fewer than 5% of our site readers think he is a trustworthy recipient of the Gameweek 12 armband.

Kevin De Bruyne (£11.8m) and Jamie Vardy (£10.3m) join Salah and Kane in the top-five, backed by 6.2% and 5.5% respectively, the two of them preparing to take on Manchester United (away) and Brighton (home).

Interestingly, a Friday-night meeting with West Ham is enough to convince 5.3% of voters to get behind Patrick Bamford (£6.2m) as the skipper of their team.

Double-digit haul and kind fixtures add to Salah's irresistible FPL appeal

Surely the Liverpool front 3 against Spurs in midweek will be Mane, Salah and Firmino.

Mane and Firmino start vs Fulham as missed the Champs League game midweek.

In which case is there a chance Jota starts while Salah is benched vs Fulham ?

    1. Nightcrawler
      • 6 Years

Yes logic says salah is rested but logic also said salah shd have missed the ucl game. So anything could happen

    2. FPL_Crisis

Always a chance but I think he will go 433 in both games.
Gini is a machine and should play both, Hendo comes back in and Jones who was rested midweek likely takes the other spot. Can see Jota being first sub vs Fulham.
Also the 4 attackers is probably not needed vs Spurs.
Expect more rotation the following game vs palace

    3. Of course there is a chance.

But it would seem strange Salah is picked for a dead rubber then benched for a PL match. If he was due a rest, then surely he would have been benched for the CL match then played in the PL match?

      1. thegaffer82
        • 14 Years
        5 years, 2 months ago

        Not really.

If you think of it like Klopp thinks he can easily beat Fulham without Salah, then Salah gets his rest before the Spurs game which is of super importance this season with Spurs flying high.

Not saying Salah will be rested for sure... But you can find some logic in that if that's how it pans out.

Klopp said that he needed to have some regular starters in the CL game though. In which case he might have been playing Salah so he could rest Mane/Firmino, with the plan being to give Salah *his* break against Fulham.

If we accept that he did indeed feel he needed a certain amount of starters in that game then benching Salah would likely have seen Mane or Firmino start instead, which would also prompt the question "why were they playing in a dead rubber game?". Going by Klopp's comments, *someone* had to play.

I think they'll play the usual front 3 against Fulham, or possibly even all 4. I see no logic in resting their best player after a reasonable recovery time for a game they need to win against an improving defence.

Then it'll be the big 3 against Spurs, as they don't want to get countered.

Then likely a Salah rest for Palace, given it's the shortest recovery time.

Yes, it will be either Salah or Jota who start and we don't know which.

Normally the current rotation pattern would suggest that Salah is very likely to be the one rested. But we don't know if rather than needing a rest he actually needs minutes.

      1. Dickie1898
        • 11 Years
        5 years, 2 months ago

I don't think a pattern exists? Salah + Firmino haven't started a single PL game on the bench this season. Mane benching at Brighton his only start on the bench, which was anticipated due to looking a little tired in the prior weeks and poor form.

Cheers everybody for your thoughts, it’s interesting as consensus seems to be Salah starts but I still can’t see it.

Have Jota and Salah and so am going to Capitan Jota over Salah which could be a massive mistake but could also be a massive differential.

I just can’t see Jota not starting one of the Fulham or Spurs games.

Equally I can’t see Mane, Firmino and Salah starting both the Fulham and Spurs games consecutively.

Am sure I am overthinking it but as am chasing big style then feel Jota Captain is a risk worth taking.

Salah (c) for me, but it's going to be an agonising wait for the team sheet. Also, a much bigger chance of him being hooked on 60-70mins.

I think if you own Salah, you captain Salah. The issue is more for people who were going to bring him in for a hit or at the cost of another big hitter, as such moves are now a lot riskier.

The more I look at Liverpool's schedule, the more I think Salah may well be benched this week.

    Wed 9th - 90mins
    Sun 13th - Fulham away 4.30pm
    Wed 16th - Spurs home 8pm
    Sat 19th - Palace away 12.30pm

Can envisage him being prioritised for Spurs and Palace. Annoying cause I want to transfer him in. I'm having a shocking year though so what do I know.
