There is arguably no better feeling as a Fantasy Premier League manager than when one of your players scores in the final minutes of a match, particularly if you’ve spent the previous 90 minutes ruing your decision to own them in the first place and vowing to transfer them out at the first opportunity.

Similarly, among the worst things to experience as an FPL manager is when your defender loses his clean sheet by conceding a goal in the dying embers of stoppage time.

If we were all purely rational, however, scoring or conceding in the final minute shouldn’t feel any different to scoring or conceding in the first minute, or the 17th minute and so on. So why do we feel differently about these last-minute glories and heartbreaks? And do they change the way we look at players, from an FPL perspective?

The Peak-End Rule

Psychologists have discovered that humans tend to assess the positivity or utility of an experience based disproportionately on its ‘peaks’ (their most intense point) or its ‘end’.

This phenomenon is known as the ‘Peak-End Rule’ and its basis is a form of memory bias. We tend to remember the most significant aspect of an experience or its most recent part which, of course, is the end. This bias is an evolutionary characteristic among humans designed to help us prioritise the massive amount of information we process each day and it is the ‘end’ aspect of this phenomenon that we are most interested in here.

One of the more notorious studies into the Peak-End Rule concerned the subject of colonoscopies (a procedure which, itself, has some metaphorical parallels to the average experience of being an FPL manager).

In this study, scientists found that, at the end of the colonoscopy, if the instrument was removed carefully, the patient reported a more positive experience and greater likelihood to book another one in the future. If the instrument was, erm, yanked out, causing discomfort to the patient, the experience was considered much more negative and thus their likelihood to have another decreased.

So, as we can see, how things end can not only influence how we perceive an event but, also, influence our decision-making in the future. It stands to reason, therefore, that we might overvalue a player who scores a late goal and undervalue a player who concedes a late goal.

With respect to the former, I can personally attest to more than a few occasions over the years where I’ve watched, frustrated, finger hovering over the transfer-out button, as my seemingly inept player blanks for 90 minutes, only for that execution to be stayed as a result of a last-minute goal.

This means I can watch a player perform at Ali Dia levels for the significant majority of a match and then, just because he eventually somehow scores, throw out all that inculpatory evidence and base my future decisions on just a tiny fraction of their performance.

Conceding late goals can create similarly illusory effects. For example, Wolves have conceded the second-highest number of late goals this season which, for owners, might cause them to consider their Wolves defenders as frustrating to own and, maybe, increase their likelihood of transferring them out.

The less-invested non-owners however (or, indeed, FPL managers who do not watch Wolves matches), might look at Wolves’ stats and see that they’ve conceded fewer goals than Liverpool this season and have four clean sheets (the highest amount of any team at the time of writing is five). From this, perhaps more objective perspective, a Wolves defender actually looks like a pretty decent prospect.

So how can managers avoid being negatively influenced by the Peak-End Rule? Step one would be to be aware of its existence and potential to affect us. Once we know about it, we can intervene to stop it negatively affecting our decisions. That is more easily said than done, given how deeply rooted in us this psychological phenomenon tends to be.

Alternatively, managers could stop watching football but, I think we’ll all agree, this is a stupid idea. A better option might be to first avoid making any sudden moves after watching football. Don’t knee-jerk a player in or hold on to a player just because they’ve scored late on without at least considering whether their overall performance merited it. Equally, don’t knee-jerk out a defender because they conceded a late goal if other evidence suggests that they’re actually worth keeping.

As is so often the case, stats may show events in a more objective light and, therefore, it’s always worth taking a look at the underlying numbers to give more context to what your eyes might just have seen. Another reason why it’s a combination of the ‘eye-test’ and stats, rather than either individually, that often yields the best results.

    Currently running a 3-5-2

    Martinez
    Cresswell Robbo Chilwell
    Mo Bruno KDB Benrahma

    Bench: McCarthy, Raphinha, Taylor, Bellerin

Captain pros and cons here we go again...

Found it useful last week even though I ended up on the wrong decision in the end with Bruno over Kdb...

    Salah
    + Amazing consistency this season
+ Liverpool look the strongest of the top sides going forward in terms of attacking
+ Palace have a statistical weakness down their left side
    - Leaked lineups from a few unreliable sources have him as not starting
    - Early kickoff (not because of how it makes us feel, but because of the lack of rest and the awkwardness of the early kickoff on a team's prep. Brighton got a 1-1 draw in Pool's last early game KO)

    Bruno
+ United are in great form (5w 1d in last 6 - best in the league)
+ Team talisman on most set pieces - extra useful vs Leeds who have conceded a lot of set piece goals.
+ On paper the Leeds match-up suits Bruno and United
    - Less rest vs one of the fittest sides in the league
    - Bruno played deeper than usual in the side last game as a consequence of Pogba being back. This could continue.

    KdB
+ Statistically, he's one of the best attackers in the game in terms of shots, attempts, chances created etc.
+ Man City are likely to rotate their stronger XI back into the side - Mahrez, Fernandinho etc.
+ City have one extra rest day and Southampton are playing their 3rd game in a week, something they are not as used to doing as City.
+ Southampton's fearless attacking may give City more space to attack.
    - KdB has had really poor conversion. Only goals from PKs this season.
    - City are undeniably on a cold run of form. They are struggling for attacking fluency and Southampton are a good team capable of frustrating them.

    Kane/Son
+ Great historical record vs Leicester
+ Leicester's defense hasn't looked great and they are attacking enough that Spurs will have space to counter into.
+ Kane and Son are both in great form and are clinical finishers.
    - They are getting points for being clinical finishers because they aren't creating as many chances as some of the other rival teams.
    - Leicester are a top 6 side and are used to playing multiple games a week. They are the strongest side any of the top 4 captain contenders will face this week.

Personal thoughts in the reply below...

I think I would've been on Salah if not for all these team leaks. The fact that it's multiple sources and the fact he wasn't seen in training is enough doubt to put me off especially since I don't think it's an open and shut case because of Palace's recent good form and the early KO factor.

I don't like captaining against top 6 sides, and I consider Leicester to be a top 6 side, so I'm ruling out Kane/Son especially with how deep they've been sitting in recent games.

So between Bruno and KdB... It's close. I think Bruno's set pieces are the big draw vs Leeds. But I'm rather worried about the lack of rest against one of the fittest teams and Bruno's more withdrawn role when Pogba starts. I also don't like captaining in big 'derby' like games because the energy and emotion can sometimes take over.

Hence, I'm gonna cap KdB. Statistics are on his side. The fact he got 2 bonus in a 1-1 draw without getting an attacking return is pretty encouraging. If he gets one goal he'll likely get all 3 bonus. City's poor form is definitely a concern, but they had chances against West Brom and they had rested some key guys as well. Back to full strength, extra rest day, I think it's enough to hand him the armband. The additional security of Pep declaring him essential and won't be rested is extra reassuring especially compared to the Salah leaks.

would you move out salah for a hit to bring in KDB just for the one week? (if you had only just brought in Salah earlier this week). Im doing ok this season so feeling like it may be worth the 4 points with the news.

KDB would be my 3rd choice... 4th if I knew Salah would start.

My concerns over KDB are a drop off in performance and quality for both City & KDB in the last game. Too many teammates are squandering the chances he creates. Southampton are decent as well... could even beat City. Also, take away penalties, KDB hasn’t even scored a goal all season.

For what it’s wortb I’m on Bruno and considering bringing in Kane for another possible captain option

If Gundogan or Sterling's headers were an inch either side of the keeper in injury time, KdB gets his assist, full bonus and is on 8 points. Margins are small for success. The article here also highlights our bias towards decisions at the end of games.

The sheer frustration of seeing KdB not get assists from wasteful teammates is what stays with us from that game but the fact he whipped in those balls, created 2 big chances by himself and had a FK saved can also be a positive takeaway...

I think it's close. Fernandes can easily haul here if Leeds capitulate and continue to make silly mistakes. But United are a really fickle side and the lack of rest is an issue. Fernandes looked tired last game and was taken off early too. Leeds will absolutely run them ragged.

Not a huge point obviously but KDB wouldn't get full bonus in those situations, it would be either Gundogan or Sterling, whichever the scorer of the goal is.

I wish I had your belief in kdb to cap him after he's let me down twice this year. I'm not considering dropping him though, remained loyal throughout and like you said his stats have consistently been good and in games its clear to see his huge influence. This Southampton fixture bodes well, they should attack and not sit deep, allowing space for kdb. Just unsure about his goal threat, he's been shooting and hitting the target alot but that belief to score is missing. Hes such a team.player, that I think when city aren't performing he doesn't want to be selfish and score himself, he gets deeper and tries to create the chance to score. But city players are all out of form, aguero not fit, plus Southampton have a good defensive record at home. Honestly one of the most difficult weeks to pick a captain. No clear standout option

On Bruno at the mo, KDB vice (I also have Salah). My dullard's analysis just sees a gung-ho Leeds team that plays into the hands of a Utd team showing a bit of form that likes to play on the counter. Bruno playing deeper is a worry but I think they'll be lots of goals in this game and I'm sure he'll be involved in at least one (hoping the shu game was an outlier). Southampton are looking very good at the moment, think City will win but it could be tight -but yeah I agree with the one goal max bonus prediction for KDB, just think Bruno has a slightly higher ceiling when you put the two games side by side.

Well reasoned. It's not cut and dry just like last week. I absolutely like Fernandes as a captain this week too. If Leeds show their inexperience in big games and make defensive mistakes, it could be a huge haul for Bruno. But if they come in with the right focus, their collective team ethic could overwhelm MUN. I'm leaning towards the latter atm but it really comes down to how you think the two sides match up.

    C) James > Dier (have 2 FT’s for next GW)

    D) Bring Kane in and Downgrade KDB

This is what I found. Salah isn't in them but neither are any of the first team players.

Any ideas here, 2FT's, 0.3 itb
    Planning for FH18, BB19...

    Martinez
    Chilwell Zouma Lamptey
    Salah Bruno Son KdB Podence
    Bamford DCL
    Bench: Justin Adams Mitchell

thinking Justin --> Coufal? or Podence --> Neto (if podence rises tonight and Neto doesn't)
can't think of any other good options

Is Cancelo to Dier a good transfer for this gw?

in terms of one being not so nailed vs one being nailed its a good move, both equally likely to concede though imo.

Over the next 4 Dier is the better pick, but I would consider ur 18/19 strategy also before making any move.

MCI and TOT have brilliant matches in both GW18 and GW19.
Their assets could outscore some DGW players in GW19 is what I believe.

    How's this for a strategy?
Build a core team of City and Tot players by GW17

GW17 - you will have 6 players ( 3 each from these teams) and 5 other players ( probably Leeds, Whu and Salah,Bruno)

GW18 - Salah/ Bruno to Auba. You field 7 players. 3 each from City and Tot + Auba

    GW19 - Auba to Salah/Bruno. You field 11 players with 16 matches

reasonable enough or u could use one of ur chips on one of these weeks. I ended up using FH in the last gw last year which was pretty good tbf so no rush but you can build for one and FH the other just to get a ideal team in one and a pretty solid team in the other without too much fuss

Problem is how do you pick 3 core MCI players - even then, they all might not start
