Tariq Lamptey (£4.8m) misses out for the second time in three gameweeks as Brighton face Sheffield United at home.

After a hamstring issue saw the defender not risked in Gameweek 12, Lamptey sustained a knock during the Gameweek 13 draw away to Fulham. Speaking before Sunday’s early kick-off, Graham Potter reported:

Tariq has got a slight problem with his hamstring, so he’s ruled out of the game.

It’s the third game of the week for Danny Welbeck, so we might use him at the back end of today’s match, rather than the start.

With Steven Alzate, it’s a quick turnaround and he hasn’t played too much football recently. So we’ve brought Neal [Maupay], Aaron [Connolly] and Joel [Veltman] in, they’ve done well for us and we’re looking forward to the game.

In his pre-match press conferece on Friday, Potter had said of right-back Lamptey:

Tariq Lamptey has recovered well from Wednesday. We took him off because a little bit of a knock but we’ll make a decision between now and Sunday.

Tariq Lamptey suffered an injury in Brighton’s midweek 0-0 draw at Fulham

The shape-shifting Potter appears to be going for a back three in Gameweek 14, matching up with Sheffield United’s regular formation.

Danny Welbeck (£5.5m) is demoted to the bench, with one of Neal Maupay (£6.1m) or Aaron Connolly (£5.3m) set to lead a fluid Seagulls attacking line. Steven Alzate (£4.3m) is the other play to drop out from midweek.

Robert Sánchez (£4.4m) continues in goal after taking the place of Mat Ryan (£4.4m) in midweek. Jason Steele (£4.0m) is Potter’s preferred back-up goalkeeping option. In his post-Fulham interview, the Brighton manager explained:

I made the decision to go with Rob [in GW13], he has some incredible attributes we wanted to use. He will [keep the spot ahead of Mat Ryan]. He earned his place on merit and how he has worked and I think his performance was good tonight [vs Fulham].

Jason Steele I feel plays the role of the number two really well, that is where we are.

Potter added on Sunday:

Robert Sanchez has got all the attributes to be a top goalkeeper, the one thing he lacks is games and experience. It’s our job to help him.

For the Blades, Sander Berge (£5.0m) is sidelined due to a hamstring injury. Oli McBurnie (£5.6m) remains absent with a shoulder problem.

Budget hero of yesteryear John Lundstram (£5.0m) has been drafted in by Chris Wilder to replace Norway man Berge.

Rhian Brewster (£4.5m) earns a start up front alongside David McGoldrick (£5.2m), as budget midfielder Oliver Burke (£4.3m) drops to the substitutes’ bench.

It is Brewster’s first time in Wilder’s starting XI since a 62-minute showing during the defeat to Chelsea in Gameweek 8. On the striker, the Blades boss said:

He’s been knocking on the door. It’s been difficult to pick the side, the players understand that at the moment because nobody’s really sticking their hand up and forcing the issue.

I’ve been contemplating different ways…whether it’s the personnel or the system or whatever.

The time now is for him [Brewster] to play in this game.

Brighton XI (3-4-2-1): R Sánchez; White, Webster, Dunk; March, Bissouma, Lallana, Veltman; Trossard, Maupay; Connolly.

Sheffield United XI (3-5-2): Ramsdale; J Robinson, Egan, Basham; Stevens, Fleck, Ampadu, Lundstram, Baldock; McGoldrick, Brewster.

Wildcarding in 16, so for one week only (depending on mid week line ups)

    A) Lamptey, Mahrez, Adams --> Robbo, Soucek, Bamford

    B) Lamptey, Adams, Kane --> Dias, Soucek, Firmino

Why does Michael Owen have a job as a "pundit", the guy is so clueless I swear.
In his latest comment, apparently Kane must be frsutrated with the role he is being forced to play by Jose.

He has a voice like an insurance salesman. Purely a 'pundit' based on his reputation as England's golden boy. Same as Shearer. Great players sh!te pundit. They never say anything really - they are just there, just because.

I don’t mind Shearer so much, but every stream I seem to watch recently has Owen there as a pundit. In the Chelsea game the other week when Pulisic was injured and didn’t make the bench, he kept saying they need to bring Pulisic on at half time.

I just hate myself for being stupid with bad luck. I needed .2 to do Vardy to C Kane.

Did I ditch Lamptey? Nope, since he had this fixture and I had kept him for this match to start. So instead of him I sold Matt Targett and the only 4.3 who was regular starter with gw18 was J Lewis 🙁 (I had not watched the match they lost and was afraid off being priced out)

So after having 5 starting defenders the whole season, I now have only Chilwell and Coufal since also R James is out 🙁

Don’t be hard on yourself. Your thinking process was correct and you got a little unlucky on this occasion. Happens to all of us and we all get a little upset - the games will come thick and fast over the festive period and you will have a lot of opportunities to dig yourself out of this.

Played Gros (my failed punt to replace Jota) and Lamptey and have Nico, Mitchel and Romeu on the bench.
I have already used my 2 ft for next week. I'm not sure i can field 11 players next week. Would you take a hit? Thinking Lamptey to Coufal. Lamptey and Gros were due to be next out the door as i am trying for a wk19 BB team.

CS and 1 bap and I would've been content with that. It had to happen sometime, Lamptey flagged, and actually not starting the game.

Easy decision to get rid now, if there are no more urgent issues. I am selling him for Robertson or Dallas this week, considering keeping KDB or shipping him out too.

If you want to see real intent to injure watch Ceballos on Mina from yesterday. Deliberately rakes him on the back of the calf. Mina feels it and then tries to hit out at Ceballos. I've seen Jimenez kick out at players this season and get away with it (one incident in particular vs Leeds).

Most 50/50s don't have intent to injure. A lot of it is poor technique, players instinctively protecting themselves, or just things happening so fast that players get smashed.

    1. Jealous Viper
      • 8 Years

Yup. I noticed that and wonder how it didn't get picked up. Was quite pleased when Mina scored the winner too

They don't have attacking midfield, simple as that. Back five, two or three holding midfielders, and two isolated strikers, that get rotated relentlessly. You just can't overlap with CBs at this stage.

Any clear thinking Blades fan would have seen this coming. Shallow squad , one dimensional tactics from Wilder which teams are now used to , no midfield creativity and still no decent strikers. Relegation written all over it.

WC first draft, quickly from my head. Left some money itb for future price changes. What do you guys think? Should I upgrade that defence maybe or is this ok?

    Mendy (Steer)
    Cancelo Dallas Taylor Coufal (3.9)
    Salah KdB Son Soucek (Romeu)
    Kane DCL Bamford

    0.3 itb

Nice start, i'd prefer Soton def and Burke over Romeu

I like all 3. Matip probably the best value if he can stay fit.

B, if not then C also. I have Cancelo atm and pretty happy with him but Pep is Pep.

According to Pep, he has proven his quality as a defender and I think the perfect pair now for CBs are Stones and Dias.

However, Pep's roulette is always an issue

It sounds like it if the press articles are true (potentially needing an operation)
FPL does say 75% chance but seems pretty optimistic

Well, we aren't 100% but, I'd say so as I own him, Lamptey and Lewis.

Lamptey - James (brought in for a hit) - Mitchell all in my squad. Only left with Justin & Cancelo.

This is karma for chuckling at my ML rival for having Lamptey - Telles - Matip - Kilman & Mitchell DF which returned a grand total of 1 point for him that week.

Well, lets see how I like them apples now 🙁
