Wolves 2-1 Arsenal

  • Goals: Ruben Neves (£5.1m), João Moutinho (£5.2m) | Nicolas Pépé (£7.6m)
  • Assists: Willian José (£7.0m), Pedro Neto (£5.8m) | Alexandre Lacazette (£8.4m)
  • Red cards: David Luiz (£5.4m), Bernd Leno (£5.0m)
  • Bonus points: Moutinho x3, Neto x3, Neves x2

BERND OUT

Wolves brought Arsenal’s impressive run of form to an ignominious end on Tuesday night, although they had plenty of help.

The Gunners had two players sent off on the opening night of Gameweek 22 which only worsened a rapidly emerging injury and bans crisis ahead of facing key Fantasy assets on offer at Aston Villa and Leeds.

Of course, those red cards also severely limited the Fantasy Premier League assets who remained on the pitch.

Owners of Bukayo Saka (£5.4m), currently in 9.8% of squads worldwide, will likely be the most disappointed considering his recent exploits, offering seven attacking returns since Gameweek 15.

He returned from his Gameweek 21 absence at Wolves, and even put the ball in the back of the net.

However, an offside against Alexandre Lacazette (£8.4m) in the build-up saw the goal ruled out.

And when referee Craig Pawson sent David Luiz (£5.4m) and Bernd Leno (£5.0m) packing either side of half time, Mikel Arteta’s substitutions left Saka isolated.

Centre-back Gabriel (£5.0m) came on for Lacazette at the interval while Alex Rúnarsson (£4.4m) had to replace Thomas Partey (£4.9m) in the 72nd minute.

NIC-ING SOMETHING

Silver linings might be hard to find for Arsenal fans after Tuesday’s defeat but Nicolas Pépé (£7.6m) did his best to provide one.

In winning the ball back and poking home the opening goal in the 32nd minute, the winger added his second goal in the last three matches.

And, of particular interest, it means Pépé has found the net in each of his last three Premier League starts away from home.

However, whether or not the winger will hold his place in the team remains to be seen.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£11.3m) made an eagerly-awaited return against Wolves and, even though he was unable to have much impact, his presence will be a big boost to his colleagues ahead of matches against Aston Villa and Leeds.

“I was but he’s been off a couple of days because of quarantine rules. He will be okay soon.” – Mikel Arteta

HOLDING THE LINE

Owners of Arsenal defensive assets will be hoping that the calamitous catalogue of errors at Wolves was a something of a blip.

This was the Gunners’ first defeat in eight Premier League games, having won five and drawn two of their previous seven.

It is worth highlighting that their defensive record coming into Gameweek 22 was admirable.

Until Ruben Neves (£5.1m) and João Moutinho‘s (£5.2m) goals on Tuesday night, Stuart Armstrong (£5.5m) was the only opposition player to net against Arsenal since Boxing Day.

And in conceding twice at Molineux, Arsenal let in as many as they had done in their previous seven Premier League matches.

The worrying thing for Arsenal’s defence moving forward, of course, is the shortages they face, a situation which worsened in Gameweek 22.

They were already without Kieran Tierney (£5.3m) and Mat Ryan (£4.2m) before Leno and Luiz added themselves to the list of players who will miss Saturday’s trip to Aston Villa. Alex Rúnarsson (£4.4m) is expected to start that Gameweek 23 match, perhaps boosting the Fantasy credentials of Jack Grealish (£7.7m), Ollie Watkins (£6.3m), Ross Barkley (£5.9m) and the like.

“Mat (Ryan) had a muscular issue and in the last two days he hasn’t been able to train. Hopefully we can get him back in the next few days.” – Mikel Arteta

“(Kieran Tierney) wasn’t close at all (to playing on Tuesday). Hopefully in the next few days he feels much better and he can come in the team and help us in this moment where we have so many games.” – Mikel Arteta

Wolverhampton Wanderers XI (4-2-3-1): Patrício; Kilman, Boly, Coady, Semedo; Moutinho, Neves (Dendoncker 74′); Neto, Podence (Vitinha 62′), A Traoré; Willian José (F Silva 90+1′).

Arsenal XI (4-2-3-1): Leno; Cédric, D Luiz, Holding, Bellerín; Xhaka, Partey (Rúnarsson 75′); Pépé (Aubameyang 61′), Smith Rowe, Saka; Lacazette (Gabriel 46′).

Feel fortunate as a Salah captainer that Bruno only got one goal and two assists. It could have been brutal when you look at that 9-0 scoreline.

      Absolutely.

If I was told Bruno plays 90 in a 9-0 win I’m thinking 2 goals 3 assists if not more.

I'd happily accept Salah being benched (have Bruno as VC) as long as he doesn't come off the bench for a one pointer if the score is still 0-0 in the second half. I do think Salah could be hauled off with if the game is in the bag with one eye on City in a few dats.

    Robbo Cancelo Cresswell
    Salah Bruno Son Grealish Gündo
    DCL Antonio

    (Steer Dias Mitchell Brewster)
    2 FTs & 1.0m

    Early thoughts on this lot?

    A) Mitchell ➡️ Shaw (Bench Gundo/DCL/Cancelo)
    B) Robbo ➡️ Shaw
    C) Robbo & Brewster ➡️ Shaw & Bamford (Bench Gundo/DCL)
    D) Robbo, Brewster & Steer ➡️ Shaw, Watkins & McCarthy -4

Looking to BB in GW26 hopefully without using my WC so im selling Robbo to upgrade my bench not just for the BB but players who I think are good options for the next few weeks too.

McCarthy only because he is one of the GKs certain to have a DGW26 and also because Steer frees up my third Villa slot if I want Watkins.

I like Shaw a lot as United have better fixtures than Pool, Shaw is creating more chances than Robbo and he is 2.5m cheaper.

Says a lot about a team if they can lose 9-0 in consecutive seasons

Biggest weakness for teams like Saints, and don't get me wrong, I like Ralph, but they don't know how to 'shut up shop'. Both 9-0s involved them having a man sent off and then just continuing to flow forward. They don't have a 'retreat' setting. They will bounce back.

It’s completely ridiculous though isn’t it

They either don’t have a brain cell between them or they just don’t care

One 9-0 could be a freak event but not the frequency they love to lose by these score lines

Lose by one, lose by nine, you pick up the same amount of points and drop the same amount of points.

Judge a team on its points tally, something that is reflective of something that is more than 180 minutes of football.

Look at the substitutes and listen to Ralph's press conference.

He was in denial to give a young player off the bench his debut amid that scoreline. He stated he wanted to change the game but felt helpless as there were no alternatives.

Sometimes its best to just simply take the hits and take stock rather than increasing your damage.

Now some would say that refers to the containing scoreline but as Ralph says, it is much more than that.

Tell me what has changed within the club under the set of players that went away to Swansea and won to avoid relegation.

I'll save you the time, the manager.
One that has simply revolutionalised a club from the boardroom to the under 8s on a budget that is no existence.
A papering over the cracks and one that does not get the plaudits it deserves.

I wouldn't be surprised either if Valery and/or Long were loaned to simply make the Minamino deal possible.

The club operates on a balance sheet, one that takes their own loans from the bank to have a transfer budget.

Some of the comments here are a joke.

      9 first team players injured

      Joke offside

      Joke red card

      2 joke penalties (one overturned)

United were ruthless. Some teams start knocking it about at 4-0 up. Fernandes stayed on and the intent was there to break records. Losing a player so early on has such a detrimental effect .

The only thing Ralph got wrong was playing djenepo in front of Ramsey.

Djenepo has improved his defense game a lot this season, watch the Liverpool game before he was forced off injured.

I think the change that he would make though is Armstrong CM alongside JWP and Redmond in the 10 but that is with the hindsight of Jankewitz and his unfortunate red card.

Ramsay was left completely exposed. Take your point on the Liverpool game but Djenepos positioning was shocking last night. Even down to 10 men there’s no excuse for losing the shape in two banks of 4

Yes, it wasn't at the standard but this is again it is with hindsight.
His last start for us was indeed the Liverpool game and he was fantastic defensively, so there would have been faith there.

I have a lot of love for Moussa, he has worked tirelessly since he joined to adapt to Ralph's system through several injuries.

And also, why are you goading people on saying (more than one) "Congrats for losing 9-0".

Do you not realise the people you are responding to aren't saying they shouldn't have lost, or didn't put in a terrible performance - but are simply explaining why.

Your initial question is literally asking why they lost to this degree today, and then having a go at them for giving you valid reasons.

Jesus Christ, the amount of time people here ask for fans advice then simply discard it like it's nothing. You lot clearly have an agenda or biased outlook before even coming into the conversation.

For the record I am not a Saints fan, just someone who is tired at people pretending to be clever making these 'hot takes' based on their own misunderstanding or lack of information around the topics.

Cavani has an ankle issue and Martial with two goals looks an attractive differential and will probably start against EVE. But I suggest you go on Mendy as I'm pretty sure the next couple of games are gonna be CS's for Chelsea and he's the only nailed on player. Son is a good option but make that decision after the Chelsea game only. I would go for D.

2 early red cards in both games have been the biggest contributors.

The other main contributors are different between the two fixtures.
Leicester was a team in the relegation zone still trying to find an identity and adapt to Ralph's system.

This occasion, a team depleted with injuries and no alternatives.
Alternatives that are already exposed sitting on a PL bench, evidently Ralph was in denial to make changes and put a young player in that situation despite having to field two of them to begin.

you are transferring Soucek when he plays Fulham? also have a slight doubt about shaw as Telles could play. AWB is more reliable

Hmm, could backfire, but if you are set on getting Son in it looks good.

        Which part could backfire?

I can do the Son move from anyone without any other transfers

          Losing Robbo and Soucek?

Soucek out before Fulham seems a bit unnecessary, they need wins now so I suspect their defence numbers will fall away again (look at WBA game).

Soucek could potentially outscore Son and Grealish (so could Coufal)

Playing both City def could be a risk

I'd do something about your keepers before anyhthing else

I won’t be playing this team sorry.

This is before transfers my team:

        McCarthy
        Dallas, Coufal, Cancelo
        Salah, Bruno,, Raphina, Soucek
        DCL, Bamford, Antonio
        (Johnstone, Gündo, Dias, Robbo)

          Looks pretty good as is
Grealish is always good, but Son (c) does not seem breaking a team for they way they played at Brighton and City the following week.
          Do like Shaw though.
          GK upgrade?

Ayling dropped in price to 4.4. Not done as well as his buddy Dallas.

One of my few goodish decisions this season to get Dallas over Ayling

I got out of Alioski when I got Cancelo for a hit. He got me some returns, but I also paid the price of not buying the premium bargain option Dallas represents in that Leeds defense.

Please share your thoughts on the Mitchell situation. Has he lost his spot again? TIA

He will come back into the frame again the longer PVA runs down his contract.

      *not a palace fan, apologies*

Thanks for your comment mate. And what if PVA renews his contract? I think TM is the perfect bench fodder if he gets to play more games.

          unsure.
most things point towards him running it down.

      Lost his spot for now

About half the Palace squad are out of contract at the end of the season - last time I looked it was over a dozen - so wouldn't take into account contract situations.

He could come back in but Palace defence is looking horrid and even with favourable fixtures I wouldn't want any part of it. Guaita is preventing some thumping losses.

    Martinez,
    Couf, cancelo, stones, targett, Dallas
    Son, Bruno, Salah, madders, gundo
    Bamf, DCL, Watkins

All things equal, would you go:

Targett - Rudiger and Maddison - Grealish -4?

Watkins to Antonio for the other bit?

Not for -4, do the Targett one first then you would still have Maddison vs Wolves.

I wouldn't take that hit. Targett is a decent pick. I get that he blocks you from getting Jack, but maybe save FT this week and do the transfers for free next week

Thanks all. Patience is a virtue. Fancy a grealish haul v arsenal but probably not worth the -4!
