Can new FPL forward Daka rival Vardy and Iheanacho?

Leicester City announced the signing of Patson Daka from Red Bull Salzburg at the end of June, with the 22-year-old forward priced up at £7.5m by Fantasy Premier League (FPL).

After a reported £23m deal was agreed with the Austrian club, Daka signed a five-year contract at the King Power Stadium and will enjoy a full pre-season under Brendan Rodgers.

The Zambia international will provide competition for the identically priced Kelechi Iheanacho (£7.5m) and veteran Jamie Vardy (£10.5m), with his arrival a concern for those Fantasy managers planning to start the season with either player.

We’ll run the rule over Daka in this piece but don’t forget that you can find reams of Opta player and team data on Vardy, Iheanacho and the Foxes in our Premium Members Area, with the Player Comparison Tool – as shown below (click to expand) – a handy way of pitting two assets head to head.

Full-year memberships (which now cover a whole 12 months from the start of a subscription rather than ending on June 1 as standard) are now available for £20, with some exciting new innovations to come this pre-season.

THE HISTORY

Having come up through the ranks in his home country, Daka secured a five-year deal at Salzburg after impressing during a trial period in Austria in 2017. He had previously made his senior Zambia debut in 2015, at the age of just 16.

The attacker made his full breakthrough into the Salzburg first-team set-up during the 2019/20 season, when he made 31 league appearances as well as playing all six Champions League group stage ties.

That was also the start of two prolific scoring seasons for the Zambian. In his breakthrough year, Daka netted 24 times and notched eight assists over those 31 showings. That equated to scoring once every 78 minutes.

He managed to improve that ratio last season, logging a goal every 72 minutes over 28 league appearances. Along with 27 strikes, he also provided seven assists. Daka ended the campaign as the top scorer in the Austrian Bundesliga and was named the league’s player of the season.

PLAYING STYLE

Daka himself aspires to make the kind of impact that other African stars have had on the Premier League:

“To see our big brothers like (Pierre-Emerick) Aubameyang, (Mohamed) Salah, (Sadio) Mane, it’s something that gives me the dream that I can also make it. I can be like them. They are my inspiration, knowing that they also come from Africa. I think when people are making those kind of comparisons, it’s great; looking at the status of Sadio Mane, the kind of football he plays and the kind of person that he is.” – Daka speaking to BBC in January

Milutin Sredejovic, the Zambia national team coach, continues the Mane comparison while likening Daka to the outstanding Samuel Eto’o:

“I would say he’s on the road to replace what Samuel Eto’o once was in representing Africa and African football. He could be compared to Sadio Mane or Samuel Eto’o, with the level of skill and speed that he has. With the sense for space, sense of positioning, in the right place at the right time.” – Milutin Sredejovic

Sredejovic will be hoping that Leicester City proves to be the right place for Daka to develop:

“Knowing his heart, mind and soul, I’m fully convinced that he’s on a very good road to reach his full potential. I believe he has everything that it takes. Now the other factors are important; to choose the right environment where he could excel that would suit his potential.” – Milutin Sredejovic

The striker is known for his explosive pace and cold-bloodedness in front of goal. His former strike partner, one Erling Haaland, gives Daka inspiration for making the grade at a higher level:

“(Haaland’s success is) a very great inspiration because I remember very well that different people used to say, ‘Erling can only score in Austria’, and people think the Austrian league is not really competitive. But I think every competition has its own level. I think it has been proven. Look at the likes of Sadio Mane, Naby Keita and (Takumi) Minamino – a lot of players that have played here really excelled.” – Patson Daka

THE STATISTICS

Across all competitions last season, Daka scored 34 times in 42 appearances while racking up 12 assists.

Having played 2,905 minutes, the forward registered a goal contribution every 66 minutes. That was just better than his ratio of 68 minutes during the 2019/20 campaign.

In the Austrian Bundesliga, he returned 1.44 goals plus assists per 90 in 2019/20, with a figure of 1.43 in 2020/21.

Daka’s shots per 90 minutes figures for the two seasons were 4.23 and 4.66, while his numbers per 90 for shots on target were 2.31 and 2.21.

Those figures stack up very well to the leading FPL forwards of last season but it’s always worth bearing in mind the sizeable gulf in class between the respective divisions.

Above: FPL forwards sorted by shots per 90 minutes in 2020/21 (minimum five apps)

THE PROSPECTS

Considering Daka’s style of play, it seems likely that the pacy forward is a long-term replacement for Jamie Vardy.

“What he’s doing, everyone is seeing he’s scoring for fun. His biggest strength is his pace. He uses it very well. We are seeing him develop into a good striker, with the strength, pace, and a great conversion rate.” Zambia international Larry Bwalya

But whether that scenario will immediately play out in Brendan Rodgers’ line-up is anyone’s guess. Vardy may be 34 but undoubtedly still has a big part to play at Leicester, so it could be that Daka is forced to bide his time in the opening few weeks of 2021/22.

The nightmare scenario from an FPL perspective is that Rodgers eventually rotates his three strikers around two spots – or even worse, just one.

The likely return to fitness of Harvey Barnes (£7.0m) will throw another spanner into the Leicester line-up works, with the winger previously excelling in a 4-1-4-1 system before his injury.

Daka will undoubtedly have an impact on Leicester assets, particularly Vardy and Iheanacho. How much of an impact and how early in the campaign it begins are questions for pre-season and the opening Gameweeks of the campaign.

Euro WC team. How’s she look?

Very nice- no Italian or Belgium attack but assuming you see that as low scoring game and your defenders from these teams attacking potential

Yeah I agree with this, and then say Shaqiri could possibly become either Belgian or Italian depending who wins and if Switzerland loses for example

That’s the logic behind my thinking. I don’t see it being high scoring but I could be wrong. It’s the one game that could go either way for me that I just can’t call so I will focus my transfer on getting in players from the winners.

With report above that KDB in line to play would you take any hit to have 1 player on bench who can come on just in case he doesn’t start (assuming my Spanish players start )
    A Stick
    B Insigne -4
    C Stones -4

    Donna
    Alba Spinazzola Maehle
    KDB Berardi Damsgaard Sarabia
    Kane Morata (c) Immobile

    No bench

Villa scored 55 goals last year despite missing Grealish for over a third of it

If Buendia hits the ground running, and they keep Grealish, they could score an extra 5-10-15 goals easily enough (and provide unbelievably good FPL value while they’re at it)

Whereas if Grealish goes, and Tammy comes in to potentially out doubt over certain starting slots then things immediately look less rosy (from an FPL perspective)

No love for Sarr from Watford? Saves me 0.5m over Buendia and Raph.
Plan is to play Watkins up top so hopefully he will be on the end of all the chances Buendia is creating?

My sideways move would be Sarr - Harrison if needs be. Otherwise I will need to downgrade a 5.5m Def to free up the cash for the two you have mentioned...

Good signing for the club, but disaster for FPL. I'd take Watkins out of my squad, not add Tammy. I'd still be up for a defender such as Cash or Targett, and a midfielder such as Buendia or Grealish (if still there). But Tammy and Ollie would rotate too much so both would be no-goes for me.

    Kane, Morata, Schick
    Sarabia, Sterling, Insigne.F. Torres, Damsgaard
    Spinazzola, Laporte, Meunier, Stones, Maehle

Would you make any changes to this WC?

      Not much. Solid

Like me very reliant on England & Spain to go through. Got burned last round with France & Netherlands. Can't pick between Belgium & Italy so going safe with not too many

    On WC 0.7 itb

    Simon Pickford
    Spinazzola Stones Maguire Garcia Maehle
    Sarabia T.Hazard Sterling F.Torres Damsgaard
    Lukaku Kane Schick

Thoughts? with 0.7 itb can easily upgrade e.g Schick to Morata, Garcia/Maguire to Azpi/Shaw etc

Would you prefer Sterling + Morata OR Ferran + Kane

(assuming Ferran starts. Both will be captaincy choice on D1 and D2)

    1. Eze Really?

I feel like overloading Spain might backfire in next round since they are likely to get knocked out by Italy/Belgium. Thats why going for only one attacking player from them.

England is a tough territory for picking attacking players. Sterling and Grealish could be ideal combo.

    Quick question.

I’ve 11 players for the QF’s but one of them is KDB.
Would It make sense to take out Gini for Grealish for a -4 as in theroy that is only a -2 if KDB is ruled out of the game.

Not much to lose, gives you a backup option even if Kevin is fit since atleast one of your starter will blank.

    Bachman (Foster)
    TAA Fof/White Lamp/Ayling
    Salah Kai Bendy Rafa 4.5
    Kane Watkins Nacho

A bit off template, but its quite nice overall.
Abuses the 4.5 defender price point and shuns Everton completely at the start.

Looks a good team and nice to see something slightly different.
The defence has a good rotation but makes things difficult if a £5/5.5m option appears who you want to get in. If you are sticking with it then it's fine.
The Salah/Kane captaincy rotation will be great if he stays at Tot.
Kai could be in for a big season but with ars, liv, tot & MCI in the first 6 I think you could hold off until week 7 when you will know a bit more about his minutes and position.

I reckon Gilmour will outscore Bissouma. Not by much. Not massively worth transferring them if you’re set on a 343 and your back up defenders are good… So it becomes luck.

Does the week he come in, when one of your main front seven get dropped/rotated and get points?

Could have a complex look at fixtures, work out “my 4.5 mid is most likely coming in in GW3, 8 and 9 before I WC in GW10… and GW3/8/9 are better fixtures for Gilmour/Bissouma/Some other 4.5 mid

Lot of effort for your 4.5 mid in a 343.

Looking at transfermarkt data and including all clubs/divisions, so we get the youth type stuff in there as well
      P101 G20 A14

Senior only (lots of sub appearances)
      P22 G0 A0

Looking at that indicates he is quite versatile and has an eye for goal if playing a bit further up.

Got to me a more interesting option than Bissouma either way

As another fine margin to help decide to get one or the other, you're probably more likely to want three Brighton players than three Norwich players at some point in the season, so perhaps lean to Gilmour as the 5th 4.5 mid

Probably even over the season duration, so I think it comes down to whether the ready of your squad is geared to being more likely to want to have three Man utd or three Man City players in it, so you don't come unstuck to the max one-club-three-players rule.
      Also Shaw more nailed.
But Stones more fun as he scored a brace in one game last season.

Just based on the performance against Germany. I was also a bit sarcastic since each of his performances so far should have meant starting the next game which has not happened at least regularly.

The whole point of my original post was just to know if anyone else is punting on Grealish as he SHOULD finally start and they play against Ukraine and his price point is nice.

I looked at a few teams that finished top 10 in the world. A few observations:

They started with Son and Kane.

Their team wasn't template at the start, it became the template after about 6 weeks.

During first 8 weeks most transfers were on defenders.

Half of their transfers were on defence.

They held template players from the front 8 for most of the season.

    They took between 5-8 hits.

    Favoured formation was 3 4 3.

      Good research, thanks for sharing.
I'm not surprised that they started with Kane and Son, the points that they racked up at the start of the season was ridiculous and anyone captaining them as well got a huge head start.

I would guess that they were not template teams at the start as the managers were not as obsessed as most on here. When they started doing well they would have become more engaged and started following more advice. Also did they change their team to become more template or did the template change to the players that they already had?

I remember defence being tricky last year with quite a bit of rotation early on as many teams were still experimenting with new players and formations which might account for so many defensive transfers.

Yes the template changed to the players they had. It was astonishing how few changes they made to attacking players. Perhaps it was luck that the players they held did so well, their previous ranks were mostly outside the top 1 million.

The season before last season I finished around 700 and indeed I was also lucky since my front 8 performed continuously really well so my usual strategy of "avoidings hits and not changing front 8 premiums after couple of bad games" (conservative playing style) was definitely rewarded.

The last season I did not start with Son and Kane and also had multiple other issues in my front 8 to which I did not react quick enough (hindsight also). My end result was something like 200k.

And if you can perform well while keeping hits low then it tells that your (quite) conservative playing style has paid off with the combination of good choices and good luck.

I’m not expecting clean sheets from them to be honest but possible attacking returns. The idea is to use the chip for maximum differential as a bit of a gamble then get my Italy players back when they no doubt beat Belgium.
