After searching through the budget and mid-price brackets, we focus our attention on the best Fantasy Premier League (FPL) premium midfielders.

From goal threat to expected stats, you can find Opta data on the players listed below in our Premium Members Area.

FPL price reveal and launch reaction from three-time top 200 finisher Lateriser 1

LIVERPOOL

Who has the best and worst upcoming FPL fixtures? 18

Mohamed Salah (£12.5m) needs little introduction to FPL managers. The Liverpool midfielder, who scored 22 goals (six of them penalties), was top among all players for shots in the box and efforts on target last season and was also miles ahead for penalty-area touches (312).

We’ve got every position covered, so take your pick!

Salah’s nearest challenger for that metric was Sadio Mane (£12.0m), with 260. The Senegalese is a hard sell at only £0.5m less than his Egyptian colleague, given that the former’s expected goal involvement (xGI) figure was almost seven short of Salah’s. Mane ended the season with 11 goals and seven assists, four of which were the Fantasy version.

Another reason that Mane could struggle to curry favour is the £7.5m price tag of Diogo Jota. The ex-Wolves forward racked up nine goals in just 12 starts on his debut Anfield season, having missed a decent portion of the campaign with a knee injury.

The welcome news for prospective Salah owners is that the Egyptian won’t be part of his national side’s Olympic squad in Japan.

That means a full pre-season on Merseyside for the winger and, barring injury, availability for a six-game opening run in which Liverpool top our Season Ticker for ‘attack’.

MANCHESTER UNITED

Despite Salah’s domination of the statistics, it was Bruno Fernandes (£12.0m) who ended the season as the top FPL scorer with 244 points. That has hiked the Portuguese’s price from £10.5m at the start of last season to a hefty £12.0m, though he still comes in cheaper than Liverpool’s Egypt international.

Fernandes totaled 30 goal contributions over the campaign, consisting of 18 goals and 12 assists. Half of those strikes were from the penalty spot, while two of the goals created were Fantasy assists.

Sorting the Fantasy Football Scout fixture ticker by attack over the next six Gameweeks, Man Utd sit in fourth. That is likely to see heavy ownership of Fernandes alongside Salah, despite the pair taking up almost 25% of our FPL budgets.

Indeed, at the time of writing, Salah and Fernandes are the two most-owned players in FPL, sitting in 51% and 41% of embryonic squads respectively.

Marcus Rashford (£9.5m), Paul Pogba (£7.5m), Mason Greenwood (£7.5m) and, soon, Jadon Sancho (price TBC) will join Fernandes in the slightly cheaper premium bracket. Rashford could potentially undergo shoulder surgery over the summer, which would realistically rule him out of FPL contention for Gameweek 1.

“It’s either an operation or I don’t get an operation. I’m not 100 per cent sure if I need it yet, so I’ll just take it as it comes. I’ll finish strong here [with England] and I’ve got a few weeks off to just relax and decide what I’m going to do. The doctors have not said yet [what the timeframe would be].” – Rashford on possible shoulder surgery

Greenwood made 21 starts under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer last season before pulling out of the provisional England squad with a suspected groin injury. If Rashford does miss the start of the season, Greenwood could be a big beneficiary in terms of pitch time – although Sancho’s imminent arrival is now a concern.

“Mason’s club appearances were managed carefully to maintain his availability through the intensive 2020/21 Premier League and Europa League schedules. But a further spell of tournament football would not be beneficial and Mason will remain at Manchester United to recuperate and prepare for pre-season training.” – Man Utd club statement

Pogba is unlikely to ping on too many Fantasy radars, meanwhile, having scored three times and garnered three FPL assists over the season.

MANCHESTER CITY

MCIWBA

After ending the season at £11.8m, Kevin De Bruyne has moved all the way up to £12.0m for 2021/22. The Belgian maestro managed just 23 starts in a season pockmarked by injury, with the rise in starting price a surprise not just because of his fitness problems but also because his FPL points-per-match average was a whole point behind that of Fernandes (5.6 v 6.6).

De Bruyne still managed to create a chance quicker than any other player, averaging one every 25 minutes. Only Fernandes (20), who played 1,100 more minutes, created more big chances than the Belgian (19) across the campaign.

Pep Guardiola’s preference for a starting XI with no recognised striker also pushed De Bruyne further up the field, operating as part of a roving front four which also included Riyad Mahrez (£9.0m) and Phil Foden (£8.0m).

Mahrez is one of several players in contention for penalty-taking duties, with Sergio Aguero having taken City’s most recent spot-kick. Mahrez (23) and Foden (17) only made 40 league starts between them but City’s early title win and Champions League chase were big factors in Guardiola’s domestic selection.

The Citizens have a mixed opening schedule but last season’s top scorers (83) are capable in any fixture. They also take on Norwich at home in Gameweek 2, where City assets could prove to be the most attractive options from a captaincy perspective.

Ilkay Gundogan‘s breakout Fantasy season – where he scored 13 times and notched four assists – has earned him a £2.0m price hike up to £7.5m. Only two of those goals arrived after February, however, due to a mixture of Guardiola’s tinkering and tactical set-up. The use of that aforementioned front four saw the Germany midfielder play deeper than he was doing in a more familiar 4-3-3, with fewer opportunities to make incisive runs into the box.

Raheem Sterling (£11.0m) remains a costly asset despite falling out of first-choice favour for a long stretch of the campaign. Despite his excellent England form, the winger is definitely on the wait-and-see list ahead of Gameweek 1.

TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR

Kane on the Golden Boot charge as Alli enters FPL differential conversation

Son Heung-min (£10.0m) has added an extra million onto his price from the start of last season, following a 17-goal, 11-assist campaign. Just five of those strikes came in the second half of the season, with Son similar to Gundogan in that regard.

Son’s Fantasy appeal could come down to whether or not Harry Kane (£12.5m) remains at Tottenham for the 2021/22 season. If the South Korea star loses his partner in crime, that hefty price tag could see him overlooked.

The uncertainty that a new manager brings is another factor to consider, with the Lilywhites about to embark on life under Nuno Espirito Santo.

CHELSEA

While most premium FPL midfielders are really forwards of some design, Kai Havertz (£8.5m) could prove the most out-of-position asset if he operates as a ‘false nine’ for Chelsea.

While Thomas Tuchel has a tendency to tinker with the forwards in his 3-4-3 system, Havertz appeared to be first choice towards the end of the season. The German scored the winning goal in Chelsea’s 1-0 Champions League final victory over Man City.

One player who is as good as nailed in Tuchel’s attack is Mason Mount (£7.5m). The England man made 32 league starts under Frank Lampard and his new manager.

Only Salah, Fernandes and Mane totalled more goal attempts than Mount (82) over the season. However, fewer than half of Mount’s shots were from inside the box.

Fellow Chelsea attackers Christian Pulisic (£8.0m) and Hakim Ziyech (£7.5m) are far less guaranteed of pitch time and would not be picks for the feint-hearted.

ASTON VILLA

Jack Grealish (£8.0m) is another name that is consistently churned out by the transfer rumours mills. The England midfielder only returned to action at the tail-end of last season, after missing 13 games with a shin injury.

“It was a bit of stress on my shin, a different type of injury but I am not concerned. I still need to keep on top of it and heal it after games, [so] that is why I had the ice on.” – Grealish on his injury after an England friendly on June 3

Despite missing a large portion of the season, Grealish still ranked third for chances created (81) behind Mount (87) and Fernandes (95). His minutes-per-chance created ratio of 27 was just behind De Bruyne.

If he stays at Villa, he’s assured of not just starts but 90 minutes in most matches.

The Villans’ opening three fixtures are perhaps the most appealing in the division, although England’s deep run into EURO 2020 will presumably see his pre-season affected.

ARSENAL

Rounding out our dive into the premium midfielder bracket is Arsenal’s Nicolas Pepe (£7.5m).

The winger ended the season in red-hot form, scoring five times in the final four Gameweeks of the season with strikes against West Bromwich, Crystal Palace and Brighton.

Those goals were half of Pepe’s total for the season as he belatedly came into favour for Mikel Arteta.

Arsenal play Brentford (a) in Gameweek 1 and Norwich (H) in Gameweek 4, with those ties sandwiching fixtures against Chelsea (H) and Man City (a).

KDB looks like he’s going to be ruled out start of season due to his stupid decision to play through an injury.

Think that would increase the appeal of someone like Foden if City don’t sign a striker

    My draft:

    Sanchez
    VVD, Cancelo, Fofana, Lamptey
    Salah Bruno Raph KdB
    Watkins Toney

    4, Davis Romeo Omo

Terrible bench to kick off the season. Bad habits still never change

He’s not nailed in City team though, that not concern you considering premium price?

Zinc/Walker will steal too many minutes off him to make him good value IMO. Of course if one of them were injured he would be more appealing.

No one is nailed in the city team apart from Ederson. Not even Kdb or Dias. There will be even more rotation this season.

So you’re saying your crystal ball into the future is a more reliable indicator of naildness than previous actual stats?

I can’t agree with that. Of course it can change, but those 2 players are the key ones and the reasons they have not been rotated like other outfield players. I see no reason that changes subject to injury.

How key are they? So key that they will play even against weeping boys? Key players tend to be spared fixtures that the team should win without them. You raised some good points but yes, I find my crystal ball more reliable as I predict trends. I am sure you will follow your past data alone.

I don’t think Dias or KDB will be truly nailed tbh when everyone’s fit, no one is safe in that team

This guy dropped his two DM’s for a champions league final FFS

Dias benefitted from at least one centreback being injured for the first 3 quarters of the season

When all 4 are fit he’ll still get swapped out once every 5 or 6 games at least for my money

There were plenty of opportunities for Dias to be rotated last season where both Stones and Laporte were fit and available and Pep didn’t take them. Laporte wasn’t actually out for very long if you look at it.

Besides from injury or just coming back from injury, KDB wasn’t rested at all in the league until it was pretty much done. Barely rested the season before either.

No way do I see them being rotated every 5 or 6 games. Dias will start 9 out of 10 for me at least while the league is still being contended. Maybe a bit less for KDB with recent injuries but certainly not every 5 games. He sets the tone for City, Pep knows this.

“No way” and “Pep” just don’t belong in the same sentence

Remember Ake is in the equation too, and Laporte got much better as the season wore on - From GW24-38 Dias was benched 1 out of every 4 games (started 12 of 16)

Honestly don’t be suprised if Pep starts rotating Dias as well if all 4x centrebacks are fit - he is utterly, utterly insane

If all 4 aren’t fit, he’s less likely to be rotated so keep an eye on who’s fit and who’s not

Come on that’s a very misleading stat and you know it. GW24 where you’ve chosen to start the sample size was the 1st and only time in the season where Dias was genuinely rotated with something still on the line. The other 3 occasions that give you your 1 in 4 rotation rate were all post GW31 when the league was already practically sewn up.

Ake is 4th choice by some distance. Him not being fit most of the season doesn’t seem like afactor in lack of rotation for Dias, Laporte and Stones are well ahead of him and as I mentioned, there were plenty of occasions where both could have started and Dias given a rest but they weren’t taken.

I will be genuinely surprised if Dias is rotated every 5 or 6 games, even with Pep.

Maybe you’re right mate - The only certainty here is that *no-one* can know peps mind, certainly not me so I’m not going to say Dias will definitely only start one out of every 4 games

But I’ve seen enough of that absolute maniac over the years to (very strongly) believe that Dias will not be immune to rotation or anywhere near it (*while all 4x centrebacks are fit*)

I wouldn’t go near him in FPL without a serious injury bottleneck - KDB is even less likely to be settled in the lineup

With him, if it’s not the 10-20% chance of him being benched, it’s the 10-20% chance of him being injured, and if he’s not injured or benched, he’ll be refusing to take (or missing) penalties, and if he’s not benched, or injured, or messing about with penalties, he’ll be wasting chance after chance in the advanced role as he did in the first half of last season, or just blanking

I hate Pep and what he’s done to Man City for FPL

I'm not actually considering Dias tbh, not because I doubt his naildness but I just like more attacking threat for a premium price. If I thought Cancelo would play 75% at least of league games, I'd be all over him.

KDB I am considering, I can deal with the odd rotation (10-15% is realistic I think) but the injury thing is a slight worry. The pens were just a bonus, I think he can hit 250 points again without them as the assists are given (and will only rise if Kane or another finisher of Aguero like levels comes in and plays regularly) but I also think he will score more goals next season, granted his shooting boots were missing for the 1st half of the season but that was the exception rather than the rule, he has been back to his best in that regard for ages, both for club and country.

Yeah I’m not considering either - Dias needs to improve on his 17 clean sheets and 2 attacking returns to get above his 140 from last year and be value at 6.0, and with 4 fit centrebacks I don’t think Pep will let him get there

KDB is just too risky now - when you stack up the 10-20% chance of him being benched, the 10-20% chance of him being injured, the faffing about in front of goal, whether from play or from penalties, the 12.0 price tag is just too much…

One goal from play in the first half of the season… and then only appearing in 8 games in the second half of the season, blanking in 5 of those… had an absolute nightmare

Also played vs Italy with a torn ankle ligament, so the “will he, won’t he” nonsense is already underway for GW1

It’s a shame too as he’s a talented boy - but at this stage, at 30 years of age he’s only had one outstanding season for FPL unfortunately, and can’t see him having another unless something dramatic changes

    A) Keep Simon but upgrade Azpi > Alba
    B) Buy Donnarumma and keep Azpi

    The other moves will be:

    - Sarabia > Olmo (or maybe Mount)
    - Spinazzola > Bonucci

    Team after the moves:
    __ Pickford

    Immobile Morata Kane

How is this looking?, to much spend on defence? Should i downgrade Dias to aford better forward isntead of Deeney?

    Sanchez, 4.0
    Taa, Shaw, Dias, 4.0, 4.0
    Salah, Bruno, Grealish, Raphina, 4.5
    Deeney, Antonio, Dcl

Nothing wrong with spending in defence. There's value there from what I can see.
My only issue is that there are a few who could be susceptible to rotation there, and the bench doesn't look like it could contribute an awful lot.

    Second draft

    Sanches / Steele

Bit more interesting than the usual, I'm not sold on DCL, maybe Benitez more defensive tactics. Mount is a solid pick but maybe Maddison to start until he gets injured. There is better than Ayling at the price I think. Upgrade Brownhill I think

What would you do chaps? Fpl nee season:

    A) 2 x 4.0 defs & 6.0 mid (e.g Sarr) in a 3-5-2

    B) 1 x 4.5 def, 1 x 4.0 def & 5.5 mid (e.g Dallas) in a 3-5-2/4-4-2 option

Other 3 defenders are Trent, Shaw & Fofana.

    1. Maximus Bonimus Pointimus
      • 16 Years

Will be the missing link in my midfield along w/Salah, Bruno, Raphinha

0.5 cheaper than anotonio, doesn’t take up a striker slot, possibly on pens again after rices last miss, is a greedy little shite, and gives some West Ham “coverage”

He’ll be massively popular if he goes, but just wouldn’t expect his initial 10-12 games form, more like somewhere between that & his terrible last 6 games

      1. Moxon

I think Buendia will prove to be a better option. Lingard isn't a reliable source of points, especially when Antonio is on the pitch.

Also Villa are strengthening, West Ham may be weakening. Looks like Rice is going elsewhere and so I wonder what effect that's going to have on West Ham. We're more likely to discount the effect of players like him to the overall team structure because DM are generally not a source of points in Fpl.

        1. Maximus Bonimus Pointimus
          • 16 Years
          5 years, 14 days ago

Buendia is definitely in the equation for that slot too - could be gold but just the little question mark over both his integration & how he deals with the league again

Then there’s Sarr & Harrison at 1.0 cheaper too, and if Jrod left Everton, Siggy’s set piece monopoly for Benitez could jump him back up to his glory days too

          So many options

Grealish could also notch 200+ for 1.0 more

But JLingz if he gets back to West Ham could keep up with the best of them too, Moyes runs a tight ship there

I think the popular opinion is that Palace are going to have a tough season whoever was appointed.

If he survives relegation that would be considered a success I reckon.
If he better than that (and Arteta doesnt) then there will be calls for him to transition over to North London.

Good luck to him - he's going to need it!

I’d guess mate (and it’s only a guess mind you) that:

      - Viera has never managed a premier league game - his most recent job was in a godforsaken farmers league in the MLS
      - Palace have notorious difficulty in scoring goals (once in the last 8 seasons have they had anyone score more than 12 league goals)
      - they also likely won’t have a large transfer budget to strengthen their squad
      - that squad is one of the oldest in the league (Benteke, mili, Ayew, McArthur, kouyate, both goalkeepers - all 30 or over this season
      - they’ve lost, or are close to losing - sakho, Townsend, PVA, Clyne and James McCarhty
      - they have an absolutely terrifying capacity for capitulation - remember FDB? Palace managed 7 games without a point, and without a goal at the start of 2017/18
      - the league isn’t exactly getting easier these days either, is it?

Now as I say, it’s only a guess, so don’t take it as gospel, and we all know very strange things can happen in this mad little sport

But yeah, probably not because of Ole?

MartinelIi, Pepe, Saka, Auba, Laca - a lot of these guys can feasibly play in those two wide roles so I can’t see Arteta being anything other than a nightmare with rotation

Even ESR started on the left against Spurs, Leeds and Brighton

I know they’ve no Europe… but I can’t see that particular Mikel Arteta-shaped leopard changing his spots when it comes to predictability

In my team, think Chelsea will be challenging this season and expect Havertz to be a big part of that. Will be rotated but if he can get 2500 mins + could easliy hit 200 pts.

Yes thinking the same. Thinking he looks priced at 8.5m and an enabler to strengthen elsewhere

Straight into my team. Chelsea were absolutely flying by the end of last season and Havertz looked to be rotated less and playing further forward.

Premium in waiting. If he keeps the #9 spot its a case of picking 10 players + Havertz imo

I think Havertz could be similar to Gerrard and Yaya Toure. Not in terms of quality and of course very different style of player, but he seems like a player who performs better in big games, rather than being a flat track bully.
I could be wrong of course 🙂

You have to change your name. It doesn't make any sense because 'Can' is pronounced 'Jan' in Turkish and probably by all the commentators.

Really? I've always heard commentators say 'Chan'...but I get your point.
I always knew the pronunciation was not as its spelt. I just like the sound of it.

            They'd be wrong then.

            Have a look here:
            https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emre_Can
Emre Can (Turkish pronunciation: [ˈemɾe ˈdʒan];[4]

            https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Help:IPA/Turkish

            https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/d/d6/Ocak.ogg

If it were were to be pronounced 'chan' it will be written as
Çan, although in English we don't have that letter and things like names aren't rewritten to be pronounced as they would in their native language.

What’s an Aston 7. Is it a posh car with twinkley bell on it?

I voted for Palace and Newcastle last season...and never expected Sheffield United to go down.

Not even going to attempt this time 🙂

Definitely think palace will be in the mix - remember they have *serious* capitulation capacity losing their first 7 (!) games without even scoring a goal in 17/18 - it was only Hodgson’s nous & experience that saved them

Viera could be as big a disaster as FDB was

Has never managed a premier league game, taking over a club who struggle to score at the best of times (in the last 8 seasons only once have they had anyone score more than 12 goals), who aren’t exactly going to have the world’s deepest transfer Kitty, at a time when the premier league has never been more competitive… high profile players aren’t readily transforming into management geniuses either - Lampard, Arteta, the jury is still even technically out on Ole

Disaster written all over it - he might be able to keep them up who knows - but I’ve a feeling their time has come

Yeah and to add to those points - don't they also have the oldest team in the league?

Mitchell & Eze are great prospects, Ferguson too if he could get fit

But beyond them the rest are of a fair old vintage

Zaha is probably in his prime at 29 in November, but Benteke, Kouyate, Tomkins, Mili, McArthur, Ayew… all these guys are 30 or over this season

They’ve also lost Townsend, McCarthy, Sakho, PVA & Clyne

Dead in the water is my guess, but who knows, it’s a funny old game

I wonder whether there is a good opportunity opening up for a bench boost GW1 team then WC for GW2. Looking at the GW1 fixtures there are obvious teams to target and, combined with English / Italian / Spanish and players potentially missing GW1, I’m starting to think this is a plausible strategy. Thoughts?

I understand the GW 1 BB if Euro players are likely to get extended rest, but how do we know that rest won't extend beyond GW 2?
And if the BB is a big success would you be opposed to drop the WC idea the next GW?

Both good points. I just wonder whether this will present a good opportunity as we learn more over the next few weeks. I personally have the BB chip so it would be a relief to lost it early tbh!

I'm with you there, the BB planning is a hassle that I could do without.
I will definitely explore the idea of playing the BB in GW 1 or maybe 3.
