After scouring the mid-price and premium defender brackets, our attention turns to the budget assets in defence.

All of our other positional guides – on goalkeepers, midfielders and forwards – can be found here.

With the second-best ‘expected goals conceded’ (xGC) figure in the league from Gameweek 20, Brighton defenders are set to be of great interest in Fantasy terms.

Apart from Lewis Dunk (£5.0m), all of Graham Potter’s backline are priced at £4.5m or below. Tariq Lamptey is currently the most popular Seagull with an ownership of 19.3%. Having missed most of last season through injury, the flying wing-back’s pre-season will be one to keep a close eye on.

Ben White would seem the obvious pick apart from heavy rumours linking the centre-back to an Arsenal switch. That leaves Adam Webster and Joel Veltman as the ‘safe’ budget options at the Amex for the time being. Brighton sit top of the FFS Season Ticker when sorted by defence for Gameweeks 1 to 6.

Veltman began 25 games last season, with Webster starting 29. The former may be at risk for a place in Potter’s XI should White remain at Brighton and Lamptey prove his fitness, though he could also contend with Dan Burn for the left wing-back spot.

Leicester City sit eighth on that xGC table, having conceded four goals more than expected from Gameweek 20. Wesley Fofana (£4.5m) is kindly priced, having started 27 games under Brendan Rodgers in his debut season.

Rodgers’ preferred formation will be of great interest to FPL players. If he sticks with a wing-back system, Fofana would be a shoe-in for the Foxes’ XI. If the Northern Irishman reverts to a four-man defence, however, the 20-year-old would be competing with Jonny Evans (£5.5m) and Caglar Soyuncu (£5.0m) for two spots.

If Rob Holding (£4.5m) can hold down a place under Mikel Arteta this season, we could have a great enabler on our hands. Arsenal’s fixtures take a turn for the better from Gameweek 4.

Once fit, Rico Henry (£4.5m) appears the pick of the Brentford defenders. He could be deployed at left-back or in a wing-back role. Centre-half Ethan Pinnock (£4.5m) offers greater security of starts and a set-piece goal threat.

Burnley full-backs Charlie Taylor and Matt Lowton both come in £0.5m cheaper than centre-back colleagues Ben Mee and James Tarkowski. A relatively difficult opening run may quell interest in the Clarets, however.

Crystal Palace defenders are all available at a maximum of £4.5m, though a new manager and an opening-day trip to Chelsea will understandably lead to FPL bosses looking elsewhere.

Apart from Junior Firpo (£5.0m), Leeds United defenders all come in at £4.5m. Luke Ayling was the biggest xGI underachiever in defence last season, racking up 4.90 expected goal involvements but coming away with zero attacking returns.

The Whites do take on Manchester United (a) and Liverpool (H) in their opening six games, though Ayling or one his £4.5m colleagues could be rotated with other budget options to avoid particular fixtures.

Matt Ritchie (£5.0m) is the only Newcastle United defender priced above £4.5m. Paul Dummett, with 12, made the most starts of any budget Magpies defender over the second half of the season.

Norwich City right-back Max Aarons (£4.5m) will be remembered by FPL managers from the 2019/20 campaign. A pretty horrible run of games in the first four Gameweeks does not encourage investment in the Canaries’ defence.

Southampton’s Jan Bednarek (£4.5m) started 36 times under Ralph Hasenhuttl in 2020/21. The Saints had the third-worst xGC in the league from Gameweek 20.

Eric Dier, Ben Davies, Davinson Sanchez and Joe Rodon are all available at £4.5m, though who might become first-choice under new boss Nuno is anybody’s guess at this point.

Kiko Femenia (£4.5m) logged four assists for Watford over 36 Championship starts last season. Former Spurs full-back Danny Rose (£4.5m) could find himself on the opposite side of defence to Femenia after signing a deal at Vicarage Road. The Hornets are fourth on our Season Ticker when sorted by defence for the first six Gameweeks.

If Arthur Masuaku (£4.5m) happens to regain a wing-back berth at West Ham, he could become an interesting asset. If David Moyes decides to return to a back three, Issa Diop (£4.5m) could also earn minutes.

Wolves’ old reliable Conor Coady (£4.5m) has a new manager to impress in Bruno Lage. Wanderers face Leicester (a), Spurs (H) and Man Utd (H) in the first three Gameweeks so we should have plenty information before taking the plunge on Wolves assets.

The £4.0m defender bracket looks a wasteland at present. Javier Manquillo, who made just four starts over the second half of the season, has the highest ownership in this category at 10.3%.

Brandon Williams has a 5.4% ownership base, likely the result of strong rumours that the Man Utd defender will join Southampton on loan. However, the Saints have already signed left Romain Perraud (£5.0m) since Ryan Bertrand departed the club.

Might be worth risking Grealish or Berardi even if they start on the bench.
Could come on as a sub and do damage.
If they don’t come on then auto sub would be useful.

You will see what the line ups are an hour before kick off. You should have 11 starters. So no subs will be coming on mate.
I got confused with this as well.

I’m saying that you might prefer an attacking player who only has a 30 minute cameo.
So start Grealish, assuming he comes on for 30 minutes and is a high chance of a return over someone who is starting but you don’t think will score (say a 4th defender).
If he doesn’t come on then the auto sub would bring on someone off the bench.

Depends how you view premiums and Chelsea and City lottery and fixtures. Personally think it's worth holding off there to see which premium defence fires - the message of the last 2 seasons is that good as they are all those defences are form driven. TAA the one probable exception.

      TAA
Shaw/AWB (much closer than you think one basis of last season perhaps)
      Coufal/Cresswell
      One of Digne/Tierney/Dunk/Lamptey

Backing Brighton defence to come good this time and both Lamptey and Dunk have plenty of threat. Tierney - if fit - is a fantastic buy at 5.0 even with just modest numbers of clean sheets.

Put together something similar last night and I like it.

My thinking at the mo is that getting too many 7.5 types in up top works if you are forming a dead team and are prepared to manage like that but potentially tricky in real life. The natural moves you have will mostly be sideways switches among a group of players who are all - to varying degrees - slightly flakey assets.

Prefer Barnes to Lingard - just checked. He was essentially ever present last season missing just 2 starts and I find it hard to believe he'll miss out this time.

I'd go VVD over Robbo if you're avoiding TAA. VVD historically matches Robbo for value.

Fofana may not be as nailed as most suppose - if Leicester go 4--3-3 he's dicey with Evans Soy there.

Folks, what sort of impact do you think Sancho will have in his first season? Will we see another VDB situation? Would be hilarious if it pans out that way.

    1. Moderately content penguin
      • 6 Years
      4 years, 4 months ago

Would have thought Havertz was perhaps a better reference point. VdB was a relatively low key signing by comparison. Some fairly significant differences.

Don't see any acclimatisation issues. He's returning to a city he knows and will be playing with mates from the England squad. United are a settled unit and there's; a natural slot for him to fit into.

DVB was a back up and signed in case Pogba leaves which he might this season. Sancho is a first XI signing

I feel Sancho understands the pressure of playing for a Manchester club, and the physical demands of the PL.
Its just the matter of overcoming the media pressure and price tag pressure.

He'll do well for Man Utd IMO. Maybe not Salah level of impact, but close.

    4. Maximus Bonimus Pointimus
      • 15 Years
      4 years, 4 months ago

Could be VDB, could be Salah, could be anywhere in between

My guess is he gets 20+ attacking returns easily enough

He's a specialist in a position utd are weak in, whereas VDB was a jack of all trades in a position utd had too many players in already

    5. The Red Devil
      • 10 Years
      4 years, 4 months ago

Those 2 aren't comparable imo, VDB was a luxury transfer incase Bruno is injured or Pogba leaves, Sancho is a player we've needed for two seasons, think he'll get around 20 returns, probably around 12-13 FPL assists

Periera at 5.5m seems decent to me. Probably worth an extra 1m over Fofana for his advanced position and attacks.

      Interesting call

Real issues at Leicester though regarding formation. I'd assume Pereira only really becomes tasty if they go wing backs in a 3-4-3 and then you may as well have Fofana. If they go 4-3-3 then neither is that interesting.

(Seen that both Liverpool and Arsenal are trying to poach Tielemans and Maddison respectively.)

Think the most natural Shaw stand in is AWB if you want the 5.5 slot open.

The ppm comparison last season was close enough and AWB has been steadily improving season on season in attacking threat and returns - not the joke he used to be going forward for sure.

Unfortunately chasing a 17 point deficit, despite a decent OR.

I believe my rival will pick 50/50 England/Italy, or slightly favour England. They already have more England defenders than Italian (including Pickford).

Think my best route to differentiate is by going 5 at the back and maximising Italian defenders. Might even have to captain one of them.

    Donnarumma
Bonucci, Emerson, Di Lorenzo, Shaw, Maguire
    Insigne, Chiesa, Sterling
    Immobile, Kane

    Transfers in:
    Donnarumma, Bonucci, Di Lorenzo, Chiesa

Annoyingly can't get any more Italians than that as I have Berardi from before. Hoping he starts, so that I can pick an England midfield differential instead of Chiesa and get yet another Italian defender...

If you're going structure I see this hole

      Son Havertz Sancho Mahrez

How do you get a sub premium mid? You have no end of switches available up top but very tricky to get upgrades - you are committing to transfers in a very flakey price bracket

You are very heavily stacked - as most are - to the 7.5 bracket up top and pinning your hopes on their being the same value this season as they were last despite being 1 mill more expensive.

I had Toney for the longest time in my draft but then decided to switch him to bamford and downgrade my defense, I can’t see Brentford being any good at in the PL and I watched his highlights on youtube and all his goals are mostly tap ins, and he looks really slow and lanky. My frontline is Watkins DCL Bamford now, much more comfortable with that.

Hmm, sounds like a little over thinking to me, bamford also missed tons of chances in the championship and doesn’t have pace.. most were predicting him to be a PL failure but that’s football, he could still have a poor 2nd season imo

Hard to tell how he’ll fare in the Premier League, but historically the PL has not been kind to strikers who have “torn it up” in the Championship.

Maupay, Andre Grey, Dwight Gayle are recent examples of guys who scored for fun in the Championship and then came back down to earth with a bump in the Premier League.

Toney’s appeal is that at £6.5m you have a nailed on striker, with pens, who pretty much is going to be behind everything Brentford does offensively.

The question is, though, how much realistically are they going to do in the Premier. West Brom last year were a better team than this Brentford side, yet they struggled in the Prem.

I think he’s a good safe pick, he could explode and tear up the Prem like he did the Championship or he could come back down to earth like the others before him and perform pretty much as you’d expect a £6.5 m striker to perform.

I'm just going with the players i want. Screw fixtures unless it's for a defender who doesn't have goal threat.

What do you think of a defence of

Taa shaw cancelo with lamptey ayling on the bench

It’s a bit pricey but cancelo has a much bigger ceiling than Dias and will surely start to put away more of his chances this season

really can't decide which 2 from VVD, Buendia, Raph to start with.
liverpool got really great fixtures long term. while buendia only has 3 good games and I have watkins which is more than enough for that tough run.
that's why I'm thinking about swapping buendia to raph for gw2. catching one of those 3 good games and avoiding manU for raph

VVD could possibly be eased in first 1 or 2 GWs and not play to 90 so go with Raph and Buendia. U don't want him coming off in 58 minutes and start cursing Klopp out.

Expecting a superior number this season with a change to Villa and amazing numbers last year. He's more experienced in England now as well and knows what the Premier League is like after that season.

Tough to predict, will have to assess his game time and position over few weeks.

His attacking return for Man City are probably on decline as well.

11.0 is a no go at least early on

Son is better IMO and obviously cheaper if you want that type of (effectively) non-captainable but highly priced asset in your structure

        Non-captainable?

Sonny is tempting me as a captain alternative. Haven't really got this far yet but week 3 for instance looks a possible.

          • 9 Years

Sonny is pretty much locked in my team. I think he is underpriced at 10m, compared to Mane, Sterling, Bruno.

          1. Moderately content penguin

That slightly sub-premium spot is increasingly tempting me. This is not least because one of my goals is to avoid a really early WC and not being able to reach that price point is what I think is most likely to tip me over.

Sonny is favourite right now for me but I can see myself going Kane Sancho perhaps ahead of Bruno Son if pricing works.

The other one in the mix for me there is Mahrez.

But you're right if you're looking for players who could be seriously undervalued (something I'm into) Sonny must be one of the prime candidates - he was matching or bettering the 12.0s and 12.5s most of the season after all.

His confidence is definitely on the up after those games with England, but he's not part of the strongest City line up. We have to see who City transfers in too, and what it means to his role. He could haul vs Norwich, but second round is too early for me to just jump on him after he fell of the cliff last season.

Thanks all. I pretty much agree.... could force his way in to the side later in the season i guess.

      Any takers for Foden/Torres/Mahez?

Not sure i can bring myself to own Kev again.

I like the idea of Torres - he ended last season as number 9 and I am sure pep said he could play there more often.

I will be starting with one or Torres or Mahrez.

      This could be way off

But looking at how he's going with England makes me wonder if he's best when there's a CF to play off. He thrived at City when Kun was about and did less well with multiple false 9s. If City get a CF I'll look at him very closely but likely not early.

      Over simplistic?

    TAA | Dias | Lamptey | Fofana | Taylor

    Thoughts on this draft?

      Looks fine for now.

Taylor as 5th defender feels unnecessary when their first few fixtures looks tricky plus he is injury prone. You can try Ayling.

Yep, looks decent enough, although I'm not sure about Sarr. He didn't wasn't that great in Watford's last PL season.

To start with, I think there's better value to be had in playing 4-3-3 with another premium defender although this won't please the team structure police..
