Francisco Trincao (£6.0m) is a new addition to the mid-price Fantasy Premier League (FPL) midfielder pool.

The 21-year-old winger has signed a season-long loan deal at Wolverhampton Wanderers, with the club holding an option to make the move from Barcelona permanent at the end of the campaign.

Trincao has already made six appearances for his native Portugal, so will be somewhat familiar with a number of his new teammates.

While he will be hoping to impress Bruno Lage and the Wolves coaching staff, we assess whether or not the attacker can make an FPL impression this season.

You can read more on the new Wolves boss here.

FPL price reveal and launch reaction from three-time top 200 finisher Lateriser 1

The History

Trincao made his senior debut for Braga’s reserve side in April 2016, before graduating to the club’s senior set-up late in 2018.

He managed just 88 minutes over the 2018/19 campaign, before breaking into the first team with 17 starts the next season.

The 21-year-old impressed enough to earn a move to Barcelona, which was confirmed in January 2020 but became effective once the 2019/20 campaign had ended.

Playing time was limited in La Liga for Trincao last season, as he made just three starts and totalled 706 minutes before departing for England.

Wolves technical director Scott Sellars said of the club’s new signing:

He’s got loads of quality – signing for Barcelona from Braga shows what potential he’s got. He’s 21 and has played quite a lot of games in La Liga, so we think he’s ready for the Premier League.

Playing Style

On Trincao’s style, Sellars added:

He’s a really exciting player. It’s an area we’d like more competition, in terms of wide players. I think the fans are going to enjoy watching him play, he drives with the ball well and has good creativity. We’ve watched him a lot, especially over the last couple of months, so he’s been on our radar for quite a while.

He’s a player who drifts past people and he has a great change of direction when he’s moving with the ball. He has great speed over two or three yards, to change direction and get away from people, can score and create, and is an exciting player.

The technical director also believes that Wolves’ strong Portuguese connection can help the new midfielder acclimatise quickly.

He’s a player who has good experience, a good pedigree in terms of club and international games he’s had, so he’s certainly a player who is going to add quality to the squad.

We have a large Portuguese contingent and they look after each other well but are also integrated in the whole group. They’re really hard-working, with a good mentality, so I’m sure he’ll integrate well and settle in quickly.

With the manager’s Portuguese background, he knows him and speaks very highly of him, so he’s a player we’re very excited to be bringing to the club.

That connection should be particularly strong with the injured Pedro Neto (£6.5m), who hails from the same town as Trincao.

“So, I met Trincao in Vianense, our hometown. We were friends for a long time, I played with him at Braga too, I have been with him for a very long time. He’s a very good friend of mine and I hope to see him soon because it was a good signing, and he will help us a lot with his quality.” – Pedro Neto

The Statistics

In his breakout league season at Braga, Trincao scored on eight occasions and provided six assists over 1,575 minutes.

That equated to an average of 0.80 goals plus assists per 90 minutes. Trincao also managed 2.63 shots per 90 minutes in 2019/20, while hitting the target with 41.3% of his efforts.

Above: Trincao’s average of 2.63 shots per 90 minutes in 2019/20 was better than any of Wolves’ midfielders managed last season

Over limited playing time at Barcelona, the winger averaged 0.64 attacking returns per 90 minutes. That bore out in the form of three goals and two assists over 28 La Liga appearances, which included just three starts.

On Trincao’s Nou Camp showings, ESPN’s Barcelona correspondent Samuel Marsden told the Express & Star:

He was here for a year. In the second half of the season, he started playing less but it wasn’t really through anything he had done himself. A formation change went against him. Barca switched from the usual 4-3-3 to a 3-5-2 around February and then stuck with it for the rest of the season.

Before that, he was getting a lot of playing time and coming on in every game – and not just for the last five minutes, but half an hour or 40 minutes most games. Until that switch, we’d seen a player with a lot of talent, playing from the right and cutting in on his left.

The Prospects

As at Barcelona, Wolves’ formation under Lage could have a big impact on Trincao’s pitch time. On the new manager’s tactics, A Bola journalist Rui Miguel Melo explained:

He enjoys wide players but the wide players in this tactical approach are the full-backs. He likes to have his wingers cut inside.

That type of approach could suit Trincao, a player noted for his dribbling skills and propensity to drift centrally for shooting opportunities.

On those attributes and playing-time issues at Barcelona, Marsden added:

He had a couple of good moments – at Real Betis when Barca came back to win 3-2, scoring the winner late on which was a really nice goal. That was a left-footed curling finish and he scored two goals against Alaves as well.

The problem that he had was those moments were too few and far between. He took a long time to score his first goal and have a real impact in the final third. It’s always difficult, though, when you’re coming to a new city, especially a club as big as Barca – during Covid – and playing alongside Lionel Messi.

He was just starting to click, really, but that formation change came and he disappeared through no fault of his own. He’s great at dribbling at players – picking it up deep and going past two or three. He just ran out of the options in the end with the bodies ahead of him and the change of formation.

With Neto sidelined going into the new season and doubts over the fitness of Daniel Podence (£5.5m), Trincao may have a smoother path into the first XI than it might otherwise have been. Marsden, as with Sellars, believes that the young attacker can make an impact in England’s top division.

He’s got the potential to be really good in the Premier League. For him to convince Barca to spend 30m Euros on him, he’s obviously got something about him. He’s still young, so it’s hard to put too much weight on his shoulders, but he could be a really good signing.

There a lot of factors at play, especially with Wolves having a new manager. But he’s going into a squad with a lot of Portuguese players who will help settle him, having been with the senior national side a few times. It may be easier for him at Wolves, where there is perhaps less pressure and scrutiny than in Barcelona.

Having been priced £0.5m more than Podence and at the same tag as Adama Traore, it appears that Trincao’s reputation has preceded him at FPL towers.

He is part of a mid-priced midfield bracket stacked with Fantasy talent, competing with players such as Leeds wingers Raphinha (£6.5m) and Jack Harrison (£6.0m).

The ideal situation for FPL bosses would be seeing Trincao immediately make Lage’s first XI for opening fixtures against Leicester (a), Spurs (H) and Manchester United (H).

From Gameweek 4, Wolves’ games take a turn for the better. If Trincao is a fixture in this new iteration of the Molineux outfit, he could graduate from the watchlist to the cusp of our FPL squads.

Anyone considering any early punts away from the template? Looking at Ferran Torres for gw 1+2

I definitely want to start with a differential from City or United. On Mahrez atm but will consider Cavani, Pogba, Gundogan and Torres depending on how preseason goes.

TAA + Robbo is very tempting.

      Pepe could be quite good.

I like Son + Aubameyang instead of Bruno + DCL

Picking the full template is so boring and just feel I gotta have one or two punts to enjoy the game more.

Yes. I’m going with my gut more this year. Following the crowd last year convinced me to ditch Son and Kane, for the opener last year. Going with triple Leicester attack and Konate.

Any obvious problems with this? KK’s draft earlier led me down that route and I like it.

    Sanchez
    Trent Shaw Fofana Lamptey
    Salah Fernandes Raphinha Sarr
    Kane Toney

    Steele Ayling Gilmour Obafemi

Basically rotating the 3 4.5m defenders.

Would personally lose TAA and upgrade Sarr and Toney.

Think the balance is wrong as it stands but with Barnes say and Nacho then think it adds up. You have 6 forwards who could all return really well - Sarr and Toney might of course but are significantly longer odds. TAA to Digne is a downgrade but not a cataclysmic one if you forget ownership and FFS 😉

I have tried to have all three big hitters, but having all of them means three big downgrades elsewhere. Something like:
        Raphinha > Fernandes
        Digne > Fofana
        Dias > Dunk
        Wilson > Davis

It's not going to work imho.

An irrelevance to me - especially preseason

One player who only gets passing mention and is not fully template here is Grealish so I assume most people here are not paying that much attention either

His ownership is only just shy off 100% Bruno and way higher than TAA and Raph who both appear to be "necessary"

      Bruno 41%
      Grealish 37%
      TAA 27%
      Raph 25%

i was surprised - i thought having Grealish would be a differential until a I looked at the %. we get stuck in FFS thinking too much.

hardly seen him mentioned on FFS - he's the 5th most popular midfielder in the game at 21%
i suspect he'll be relatively nailed, but with all the attacking options at Chelsea it's hard to get excited about his upside.

His influence has waned significantly due to rotation and Havertz beginning to flourish in his latest role, Mount now seems to be in a role that is at best seeing him assist the assister but more than anything he's covering a lot of ground doing more defensive work and pressing than before

    Sanchez (Foster)
    TAA - Shaw - Digne (Fofana, 4.0)
Sarr - Salah - Bruno - Raphinha (Bissouma)
    Watkins - DCL - Nacho

    Any thoughts on the above?

Was on Digne with Lamptey 1st sub but realized I'd probably prefer to play Lamptey most weeks from 1-6 anyways. Better defense, better fix, has plenty of offensive threat and an extra 1M. Welcome Buendia!

Think I'd rank the defenders (in terms of favouritism) like this:

    1. TAA
    2. Lamptey
    3. Shaw
    4. Dunk
    5. Digne

I can never remember a striker scoring 31 goals in the championship in recent memory. Glenn Murrey scored 30 in 2012/13 and he went on to have a good PL season. Toney looks like the real deal.

He does, but at 6.0 Welbeck is a decent alternative and has better opening fixtures. Only fear would induce me to pick Toney.

Similar I think to what Watkins scored in the championship albeit watkins scored half dozen less.

Watkins playing for a better team and i think he underperformed last year. Was extremely unlucky a lot.

Stats show strikers in promoted teams in last few seasons score around 50-60% of goals they did in Championship so 15-18 goals for Toney at 6.5 m would be good return.

Guys surely Taa seems a bit of a gamble. Especially at 7.5m. Defensive returns a big worry until defence is up to speed again.

Considering liverpool still need to introduce their two centre halves whom will need time to getup to speed. Could take until christmasfor that to happen. A year is a long timetobe out of football.

Liverpool's opening fixtures are outstanding and TAA's form second half of the season was excellent. He's back to the FPL monster he was before, BPS + Attacking Returns + Top 3 CS% in 4 of the first 6. An outstanding player that I am not keen on going without, especially with those Liverpool fixtures.

I think I may have created a quite interesting Bruno-, Raphina- und Shawless team:
The idea behind the team is looking for a few differentials, having a playing back 5 will probably bring bench points but at the same time can step in to reduce the need for hits. The main thing I might change is accomodating some cash in case Mahrez over Sancho fails - probably downgrading Ayling to 4.0M.
    Pickford
    Tierney Cancelo TAA
    Pepe Trossard Salah Mahrez Havertz
    Watkins Ihaenacho
    Bench: Foster, Lamptey, Ayling

The idea with this team is taking risks but targeting Norwich, Brentford and Crystal Palace in the 1st 4 weeks.

Thanks, think I'll see how it goes and try to hold off on wildcard unless there's an emergency. That's why having 12 outfield players I'd happily play is ideal. The beauty is with this structure is Pepe/Greenwood are interchangeable based on preseason performances. Taking punts is a lot more fun and I don't mind failing.

Looks nice as a differential team but unfortunately I think your 3 differential mids are all rotation risks. I had Trossard at 2 different points last season and he didn't play much, Pepe ended the season a lot better than he started it but Arteta doesn't seem to have any player that's a guaranteed starter and Mahrez is part of the roulette, he had a very good season but you still have Torres, Bernardo and Foden that could play in his position. Like the Pickford pick though, I would have never considered him at any stage previously but he had a really good Euros, still had a few sticky moments in the last 2 games but he seems to have improved his basics and cut down on being so rash a lot of the time

Pickford? That is picking wild...did we watch the same games? He should be banned from trying to create by passing the ball...he gave away so many stupid passes...I guess here it is about saving points but in my mind he can destroy a clean sheet by himself...

I know it's still a risk so I wouldn't do it myself but I did think he looked more composed, but yeah he did still have those 2 wild slices at the ball against Ukraine and was lucky one effort against Italy spilled away from him when no Italian was near. But he definitely is still self-destructive

If I was doing 3x big in the mid i'd down-grade TAA > Robbo, Shaw > 4.5...use the 1.5 extra to upgrade to a 6.0 fwd.

Or keep Shaw and move TAA to a 4.5 & get a second 7.5 forward.

        Salah, Fernandes, KDB, Raphinha, Smith-Rowe
        Watkins, Welbeck, 4.5

Hope 1 of ESR, Welbeck plays each week - if not play 4 at the back.

Not seeing Bachmann selected either here or in the game which I find a bit odd. Doubles up with Sanchez nicely plus Watford had the best defence in the championship last season and Bachmann looked decent at the Euros.

Past 3 years of tightest newly promoted championship defenses / GK all did very well : Meslier, Henderson & Patricio.

Think Newcaslte also did fairly well the season before that.

Have him on one of my variants. Finished the season really well - as did Tekkers! - but he doesn't exactly have track record for banging consistently. Looks like one to have when fit and in form and then to move off - not seeing the long term probabilities myself.

Do think he's the pick of the 6.0s given Pukki fixtures but truthfully that general price range is such a lottery. No one much had Bamford and Watkins this time last season or Pukki week 1 the season before and yet everyone was all over Mitrovic.

Think it may be smart to have a space there but landing on the right choice from day 1 is nothing. more than chance.

The 7.5 strikers all have track records. Welbeck has pedigree but never got so much as 10 goals in a season - even then you need to go back really early to his United years to see him come close.

Had to look up those stats but it all ties in with my overall impression of him of someone who flatters to deceive.

Putting him into the same category as finishers such as Wilson and Antonio - wayward as they are - doesn't add up.

I really don't think he does. I can understand his popularity based on price - basically he's the most viable regular starter in the 6m and under bracket. But for 0.5m more you get in Toney a talisman penalty-taker. False economy to save that and go for Welbeck, in my opinion.
