The Fantasy Premier League (FPL) forward pool is awash with appealing-looking mid-price options in the £6.5m-£8.0m bracket.

Ivan Toney (£6.5m), Dominic Calvert-Lewin (£7.5m), Ollie Watkins (£7.5m), Patrick Bamford (£8.0m), Kelechi Iheanacho (£7.5m) and Michail Antonio (£7.5m) all have double-digit FPL ownerships at the time of writing, with Callum Wilson (£7.5m) and Danny Ings (£8.0m) also among the tried-and-tested names in this rung.

Going under the radar somewhat is Raul Jimenez (£7.5m), who has plundered 52 attacking returns in 86 Premier League appearances to date and averaged a very respectable 4.9 points per match in doing so.

Now back in full training and clocking up the minutes in pre-season friendlies, the Wolves striker is the latest player to come under the radar in our ‘Sleeper’ series – a collection of articles on proven FPL performers who had a quiet 2020/21, be it through injury, loss of form or otherwise.

2018/19: FPL REVIEW

Dallas at left-back as Bielsa shuffles Leeds pack for trip to Wolves

In his first season as a Premier League player, the striker ranked third among forwards for shots (111) and shots in the box (88) on his way to scoring 13 goals. Jimenez was further down the list for big chances (19), however.

The Mexican also created the fifth-most chances (42) among forwards and was joint-top with Callum Wilson for big chances created (13).

That saw Jimenez rack up the fourth-highest expected goal involvement (xGI) figure (19.19) behind Jamie Vardy, Sergio Aguero and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

The Wolves forward ended the season with 23 attacking returns, having totaled three Fantasy assists alongside seven regular ones.

2019/20: FPL REVIEW

What's the best strategy for choosing forwards in FPL? 8

Jimenez was at it again in the 2019/20 season, going one better as he produced 24 attacking returns.

He topped the shots charts for forwards in that season with 118 attempts, which was 17 more than nearest challenger Gabriel Jesus.

Jimenez was also first for shots in the box (93), although eight forwards registered more than his 23 big chances.

He was out in front for the creativity stakes this time, creating another 13 big chances for his team-mates.

Jimenez created 48 opportunities in total, second only to Liverpool’s Roberto Firmino.

The striker landed in second on the xGI charts in 2019/20, with his total of 21.73 not far off first-placed Jamie Vardy (23.35).

In his curtailed 2020/21 campaign, Jimenez ranked fifth among all forwards for attempts (26) from Gameweeks 1 to 10 – the point at which he sustained his sickening injury.

Only four big chances arrived during that time, however, which placed him a lowly joint-16th among strikers.

2021/22: THE PROSPECTS

Can Bruno Lage make Wolves' attackers more appealing in FPL?

Having suffered a fractured skull in Gameweek 10 of last season, Jimenez returned to full training in July of this year as pre-season began.

His first kickabout in nine months came in the mid-July warm-up game against Crewe Alexandra, with the Mexican clocking up half an hour of pitch-time and putting himself about early on; always a good sign from a psychological perspective after such a traumatic incident.

Not only does Jimenez have to regain form and match fitness after a horrific injury, he has to do it under a new manager.

Bruno Lage could potentially be a tonic for Wolves’ attacking assets, however, with the former Benfica manager having a reputation for playing more offensive football than his predecessor.

Jimenez traditionally struggled for ‘big chances’ under Nuno Espirito Santo, although did offset that with his durability (he was an ever-present in the Premier League for over two years until his injury) and by being more creative than most of his positional rivals.

We will need a few Gameweeks to assess Lage’s impact and Jimenez’s match-sharpness but that marries well with Wolves’ relatively difficult opening fixture list of Leicester (a), Spurs (H) and Manchester United (H), which gives us an audition period of sorts before the September international break.

The schedule brightens significantly from Gameweek 4.

If fully fit, Jimenez could certainly stake a claim for a spot in our squads among a stacked mid-price striker bracket, considering his proven FPL potential.

    Greetings

First time playing. Here is my current setup. Could always downgrade Cavani and spend more in midfield, Mount or Grealish etc, but pretty happy with this as could play 4-4-2 or 4-3-3 pretty easily. Thoughts?

    Sanchez
    TAA Shaw Digne
    Salah Bruno Buendia Raphinha
    Watkins Toney Cavani

    Foster Lamptey Manquillo Bissouma

I'm inclined to believe Levy is willing to sell him in principle, but I don't believe City will stump up 160 squillion. It will have to involve a pair of City players moving to Spurs. My choices, as in best for both clubs and players would be Jesus and Laporte.

            Ridiculous on multiple counts. :lol

The biggest one is, why on earth would either player want to go to Spurs? Or Mahrez, or Silva for that matter? All of them can do much better if they leave City, which there's no reason for them to.

In addition, Laporte would be a big loss to City and they point-blank won't let him go. Garcia already left; arguably they are short a CB and Laporte is at least on a par with Stones. Jesus, maybe, if they were getting Kane, but they'd then still need to sign another striker.

Oh I agree none of them would be enthused by the prospect - or point-blank refuse.

But I can envisage City being in a mini-Barce dilemma re FFP. They haven't been completely cleared of breaching financial rules, and they can't get done for being way over whatever the wage limit is. If they're to pay Kane 400K per week, they need to offload some, whether it be as swaps or to go elsewhere. The latter will all take time, so Kane's arrival won't be for a while yet.

Fair enough. It's the swap deal I doubt. Juventus want Jesus so why would he go to Spurs?

City have a very strict wage structure, no way is Kane going to City for money. If he goes its for trophies. But I can't see City paying the transfer fee, totally out of keeping with how they've run the club to date.

You kidding? City's net spend over the last 5 seasons dwarfs the rest. 505m with United next at 375m and no-one else over 275m.

In addition, KDB is on nearly £400k per week and is the highest-paid player in the PL, so your strict wage structure is a fantasy as well. 😆

Elite finisher, on pens, .73 npxG+xA/90 added to City's insane attacking system with KDB, Foden, Mahrez and co all providing for him. It's like having a much more nailed, fully fit Aguero. Absolutely incredible prospect should the transfer occur, 25+ goals will be child's play if fit.

If Son plays up top with a suitable partner, I'd be very interested in him. If Jesus, Ings or Alli are up top with Son deeper, they'd waste too many of the chances Kane would convert and Son would not be sufficiently attractive. What top-notch striker even on high wages would go to non-CL Spurs? As I say, it all remains to be seen.

There are many FPL pricing errors this season, mainly because they rushed them out and based them on last season's prices, not last season's performance.

Not sure he's worth more than Robertson but 7.5m is OK I guess. My point is that others are under-priced. Tierney, for example. TAA would need to score 75+ points more than Tierney over the season to justify the price differential and he won't.

Interesting. Last night I tried a draft to get Kane in whilst retaining Salah and Bruno, and found myself downgrading TAA to Tierney. Overall, I don't feel comfortable with the draft, but it's very early days. The OP asks for names - in addition to Tierney, what other defenders would you say are underpriced, in your opinion?

      They'd have to
      > Have strong attacking output

Shaw/Cresswell maybe. Digne possible if he gets the lion's share of set pieces and Rafa improves them at the back.

      Depends how you define “match”

Statistically - no, TAA is waaaay out on his own as being by far the best attacking defender (and therefore the best defender) in the game

      Minutes per XGi:

      TAA 300
      Cancelo 321
      Alonso 336
      Shaw 402
      Chilwell 451
      James 452
      Robbo 458
      Dallas 527
      Cresswell 532
      Digne 559
      Coufal 585
      Tierney 737

Only Cancelo and Alonso come close, and they have rotational deviants pulling the strings at left back

He beats Robbo hands down for expected goal involvement, and isn’t even in the same postcode as Tierney

For any of those guys to match TAA they’d need much more minutes (like Robbo last season), and much more luck (TAA underperformed his XGi by 10%, Robbo overperformed his by 10%)

      The main things are

      - Didnt join Leeds until GW5
      - Didn’t get his first start until GW9
      - Didn’t start to produce consistently until GW14
      - Got 14 returns in next 22 appearances GW14-38

He also never went more than 3 games without a return, whereas Harrison was much more boom/bust…

E.g. he scored over 10% of his seasons points in one game vs Burnley (17 points in GW36), ut finished the season with 11 blanks in his last 15 appearances so may need more patience

Both are pricing errors though, no doubt - and by 1.0 each imo, not just 0.5

To keep it simple: Raph have set pieces. So higher ceiling.

No reason not to think if Kane is moving that it would have been in the works for ages too.
Can’t see them banking £100m+ and not spending the money - the fans would revolt.

They'll spend a chunk of it. They need strengthening in central defence so that's a good transfer. They need more in midfield and a replacement striker, but I don't see them getting the quality required to push for a Top 4 spot.

Let me guess what the essence of the article is- " If Raul can get back to full fitness, he is one to consider Gw4 onwards"

Seems like one of those where the intern needs to meet his target of delivering an article by the said date.

    Sanchez, Bachmann
    TAA, Robertson, Tierney, Cresswell, Lamptey/White
    Salah, Son, Buendia, Raphinha, 4.5
    Iheanacho/Watkins, Toney, Antonio

Looks excellent. It's a dilemma choosing Nacho or Watkins - I'd take both over Antonio myself. Are you sure you want to rotate your keepers? I'd go with Sanchez and change him for Bachmann if he makes a better start. Trying to rotate them could leave you frustrated with more points on the bench.

Was thinking that, but with Covid, I think I want 2 playing keepers. Nacho and Watkins is a good shout. The time is ticking until Antonio gets himself injured again.

Antonio’s fixtures are so good and he’ll be fit to start. Makes sense to have him while you can in my opinion.

My main worry is if they get Matheus Pereira he might lose set piece duties. Cresswell was a personal favorite of mine last season, but I can justify 5.5 if he doesnt get set pieces anymore.

I gotta think Cresswell is still on the majority - he mightn’t take direct fks near goal but crosses are his thing.

Is ESR nailed for Arsenal? I know he's gotten the #10 shirt and Arteta seems to love him. However, there has to be a reason he kept Willock. They're also linked to Maddison.

Maybe true. When he plays he’ll be in that role with good attackers around him. And he’s 5.5m so super cheap and totally fine to bench.
So I’m not fussed so much if he’s not nailed I suppose.

I have a similar dilemma between a 4.5 and ESR - i think i'm leaning towards ESR at the moment. I just think the value he provides over and above the 4.5's is huge, their fixtures are actually pretty great except GW2 & 3 and with no europe there should be less rotation for Arsenal too.
